To friends of Boris: bad news

I'm sorry to have to report the death of Boris, aka Raymond. I have an email from his son, which he wanted shared here so that people who had known him on-wiki would know: I'm sorry to come to you with bad news. My dad had a massive stroke biking home from work on Tuesday, and was pronounced brain dead on Wednesday evening. In a final act of generosity, he donated his organs to save the lives of four other people. Boris was a good person, and I'll miss him William M. This is Boris's/Ray's son. Thank you to all of you for your well wishes. I know my dad spent a lot of time working (and playing, for that matter) on Wikipedia with all of you. I'll be checking this page for the next few weeks, and would welcome any memories or stories you have to share either here or on the memorial page. A day after the shock: I hope he would have liked this little memorial. Sarritt, I hope you like it. I "met" you father in a rough situation - we lost a friend (not to death ...) - and as you can see in the dialogue above (which we continued once a year), he was the one to bring me back to serenity. Ray was one of the best people here. Whenever I saw he’d posted somewhere, I knew it was going to be insightful, or funny, or both. I first knew of Ray as Dr. Arritt, where he was one of my Intro to Meteorology professors. I was fortunate to continue with meteorology into grad school, and Ray was gracious enough to serve on my committee and to allow me to TA for said Intro to Meteorology course. His guidance in improving and motivating my writing and teaching will forever be appreciated. And his sense of humor, as displayed on this site, shone through in person as well. My thoughts are heavy with his family, friends, colleagues, and students. (@Sarritt: I believe we also had some brief business as, erm, Counter-Strike teammates back in high school. I've been putting off writing anything here, because I don't know what to say. Ray was one of my favorite people, which is an odd thing to say about someone whom I never met in person and only interacted with in the context of this website. He was smart, insightful, humane, and funny, and most of all I valued his sense of perspective, which is in notoriously short supply in these parts.
We carried on an intermittent email correspondence over the years, very little of which had to do directly with Wikipedia. Mostly we discussed our families, life, academic politics, music, and the experience of editing Wikipedia as a professional academic. Our chats had wound down over the past few years as we both increasingly withdrew from this website, but just looking back through my email archives today at our conversations brought a smile to my face again and again. We had abstract plans to meet up for a beer sometime, somewhere.
Obviously, my sense of loss is trivial compared to what his family must be experiencing. The only thing I can say is that Ray made this website better; people are, in aggregate, better informed about the world because of his contributions here. As an educator, I know that was his primary motivation for spending his time here. Ray also touched a lot of people's lives here, and he'll be greatly missed. I'm glad to have known him. Very saddened to hear this news. I remember early in my Wikipedia career, when SBHB was contributing under his own name and helping to deal with people pushing pseudoscience. Raymond has made a substantial contribution and to the world at large, for which we can all be grateful and from which we can take inspiration. Sarritt, I express my condolences to you and to the rest of Raymond's family. I feel proud to have known him, if only through Wikipedia, and hope to have learned from him. I also express my thanks to IntoThinAir, who has started an article on Professor Raymond Arritt. Hopefully it will see ongoing development and improvement, and I have posted to WT:DYK#Raymond Arritt so hopefully the new article might appear on the main page, perhaps even with a suitable photograph. You and I never interacted all that much Raymond, but I have seen you around many times over the years and am absolutely stunned to learn of your recent passing. We've lost one of the wisest, sanest, and most down-to-earth editors that I have ever had the privilege of coming across, and Wikipedia will not be better off for it.

My condolences to the innumerable people - family, friends, students, and editors alike - whose lives were impacted on some level or another by Raymond Arritt. His loss is our loss; his absence, a palpable void for us all to bear. But his memory shall live on. May we all seek to foster in ourselves the same passion and dedication that Raymond embodied in everything he did.
