@0mtwb9gd5wx:There are no "spell check bots", since checking spelling is too difficult - see WP:SPELLBOT - but a post at Wikipedia talk:Typo Team might attract the attention of willing editors. Larry Heinemann

The page on Larry Heinemann does not mention the fact that Larry taught at DePaul University as a "Writer at Large," along with author Ana Castillo. I attended one of Larry's classes in 2002, at DePaul, but I'm not sure how long Larry taught there. I didn't want to add it without the proper research on his tenure. Mikecataldo you would need to find a published reliable source for the appointment, see WP:RS. Wikipedia doesn't rely on editors' own knowledge, known as original research. TSventon (talk) 11:18, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Clarification on citing most followed accounts

In article Koo (social network), the most followed accounts section has a table with 5 most followed accounts. It refers to their respective profiles. I tagged it with external links and OR issues at the top. I'm now wondering if it is allowed? Per WP:EL and WP:NOSOCIAL, it's not allowed. Or is there a provision for this exact purpose? @DaxServer: Looking at this from an outsider's perspective, I don't see why the section is even necessary for a Wikipedia article. It doesn't seem to convey any notability (especially with the sources used), and could be construed as promotional. Redlink to Heathrow Airport

I've just added a wikilink to Heathrow Airport at Uxbridge College#History, but it is showing and behaving as a redlink. I copied and pasted the article name and it is exactly as above, which is appearing here as a valid blue link, so am a bit baffled. Can anyone advise me? Thanks. Tacyarg somehow there must have been a non standard character in the link. I copied and pasted the article name and that seems to have fixed it. My best advice when something goes wrong is that trying again and using preview sometimes works. And the Helpdesk often works as well. TSventon (talk) 15:36, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

@TSventon: I suspected there might be some kind of invisible character there because the wiktext looked correct, so I copied the relevant wikitext from the diff into my browser console and then used a JavaScript one-liner

"[[Heathrow Airport​]]".split("").map(c => [c, c.codePointAt().toString(16)])

to get a list of all of the characters side-by-side with their Unicode code point. The code points for this kind of special character are much higher numbers than those for your typical English Latin letters, so finally I just looked up the one that stood out to find out what character it was. – Rummskartoffel 13:15, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Nope, not gonna contribute to Wikipedia's requests for donations anymore, you also have some bogus information published about my late brother in law, who was in the band Social Distortion. search the name Corel Shields on Intelius, she was born in 1955, not 1959. You weren't there, I was. And the information you published is a LIE. What a joke, the loser here who basically informed me that the truth isn't relevant to Sabel's biography. Our page was removed and it should not have been

Hi, Could you lease help us with a page that has been removed. It was for "Brendan P. Keegan". It was recently removed and the wiki editor we hired said. "someone removed it they placed a tag that he isn't notable and the article is promotional (which was not) and Wikipedia removed it. You may request the un-deletion of the page because when I published I am not if someone added anything to it later"

Please let me know what can be done.

@Jimmyhaines: Greetings, and welcome. Several different points to consider here:

• It is/was not "your page". It was an article about Mr. Keegan and neither you, he, or his company own the article or any of the content therein.
• I did not see the article prior to its deletion, and I am not an administrator and therefore cannot see deleted content, so I can't comment on the state of the article prior to its deletion. However, in general Wikipedia is not interested in what a subject has to say about itself. As an encyclopedia article, it needs to be sourced from reliable sources which are independent of the subject.
• As a matter of procedure, the place to request undeletion of an article is at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion‎, and as a contested proposed deletion such a request would be perfectly in order. There is a certain amount of administrator discretion allowed here, and the request could be denied if the article is deemed to be overly promotional. Further, restoring the article would not exempt it from possibly getting nominated for (re-)deletion via the more formal Articles for Deletion process where the status of the article is put up for discussion by the community at large.

False information about our company

Someone is labeling us as a "spamming" service on this page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArcaMax_Publishing ( I have just reversed that edit).

ArcaMax Publishing Inc is not and never has been a "spammer." Our business health relies on our reputation as dependable newsletter mailers for the past 20 years. Is the erroneous description is an intentional act by the editor to mis-categorize our business? This is libel. The article has been repeatedly vandalized by IPs to mark it as a "spamming" service, and reverting this vandalism is perfectly in bounds. The IP has a legitimate complaint. A company cannot be called a spammer or a scam without references to the highest quality reliable sources. I have semi-protected the article for three months because the disruption has gone on for months and comes from IP addresses. Notify me if disruption resumes. Hello, Genifox. I'm sorry about your grandfather. It is possible that Wikipedia could have an article about him, provided that he meets Wikipedia's crietira for notability - roughly, that there are enough reliable published sources, wholly independent of him, that talk about him, to ground an article on. As you have directly expressed your conflict of interest (to be frank, Wikipedia is not interested in what you need, only in its own needs as an encyclopaedia), you would be discouraged from creating it, but not forbidden. But please note that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. This means that you would need to set aside everything that you know about him, unless it was corroborated by an independent published source.

If what you want is to get your grandfather's life and work into print, then Wikipedia is almost certainly not the place to do it. But if after these warnings you decide to try, please start by reading your first article. --ColinFine (talk) 19:15, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Email confirmation

After changing my e-mail address, the web server said:

A confirmation email has been sent to the specified email address. Before any other email is sent to the account, you will have to follow the instructions in the email, to confirm that the account is actually yours.

The “confirmation” e-mail did arrive at the new address, but it contains no confirmation actions. Just what to do if the change is bogus. I guess doing nothing would be interpreted as confirmation, but it might be confusing to folks, especially if they’re not skilled in English.

I just changed my email. It sent me a message which said to press the "Confirm email address" button, which I did. It then had me log in again, at which point I was told "Your email address has now been confirmed." Elemimele, maybe your confirmation went to your junk folder? After reading those response, I went to check whether my address had been changed. That page had a Confirm button that it did not have before. Clicking that generated an e-mail with different content, including a "Confirm email address" button, which did send me to a page saying the change had been made (without asking me to log in again.   Sorry, but that makes no sense. The article has to be written several months after the event no matter what, in the sense that what's written in early days is a series of throwaways full of rumor, speculation, and misinformation, because that's what early sources are full of. The question, therefore, is not whether to replace the throwaways with a decent article months from now, but whether we'll invest large amounts of editor time, attention at the drama boards, and other resources in producing those temporary throwaways, or just let readers get current news directly from news sources.   @EEng: It does make sense. Stuff gets added, then refined/removed as newer info comes to light. Edit conflicts can be frustrating, but you just have to accept that they can happen.   Well, DUH, I'm quite aware of the process, and what you say doesn't address the senselessness of what you said. The edit conflicts, the frustration, the refinement and removal, the arguments over which of several conflicting sources to believe, the vandal fighting -- all of it, minute after minute, hour after hour, for days and weeks on end -- could just be skipped for the first week or two, and a calm, decent article written starting then, from rationalized, fairly comprehensive sources, instead of writing and rewriting and rewriting and vandal-fighting and editwarring and then rewriting some more. Editors who are interested in the long-term state of Wikipedia will avoid such articles until a few months have passed. Those who enjoy the edit conflicts and other interactions, and take pride in being the first to find and cite a good new source, will start work right away. Bullet points not working within Template:Side box?

Hello,

@DesertPipeline: It looks like Module:Side box adds the "plainlist" CSS class (also used in {{plainlist}}, for instance) to its content (see generated HTML), which can't currently be turned off. As a temporary fix, you could write your list using HTML syntax and manually set the list style:

<ul style="list-style: inherit;">
<li>item one</li>
<li>item two</li>
<li>item three</li>
</ul>

But a better long-term solution would be to add a parameter to Module:Side box that allows "plainlist" to be turned off. – Rummskartoffel 16:53, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

I guess I messed up with addition of article. I don't hava a referrence . Verbally from DOT thatbwe were second plane to survive. Almost 40 years ago but I clearly remember piñot swerving and yelling at me to shut the cabin door. Regarding your question, the information was removed because it violated the strict biographies of living persons policy as being completely unsourced. It doesn't matter if the information is "true" or not as we can't just take your word for it, it must be sourced to an independent reliable source for verification purposes. Also, Wikipedia editors decide for themselves whether an article should be locked. The subject of the article has no say in the matter. Wikipedia is written for the purpose of its readers, not on the article subjects' beck and call. TV documentaries and news segments as source

I have two questions about sourcing:

1. Is it allowed to use old TV broadcasts of documentaries or news segments as inline-citation source that are no longer available as a video clip on the broadcaster's website? One of the broadcasts I'd like to use is the following: グッド！モーニング (Good! Morning) aired on TV Asahi (Japan) on November 5, 2014, 4:55-8:00 AM (local time). The program is listed on Kakaku.com (first entry), but the information itself that I want to source is not mentioned there. I have a private recording of the news segment, but uploading or linking it would probably violate Wikipedia's policy.

I don't know any policy to the contrary, so I'd say just go for it. Worst thing that can happen is someone reverts you and you have to discuss with them before adding it again. DAB: Karen M. Fischer / Death of Karen Fischer and Christian Struwe

I just finished moving Karen M. Fischer to the mainspace, but I am not certain how to handle the disambiguation page. The Karen M. Fischer page is about a scientist. Right now 'Karen Fischer' redirects to Death of Karen Fischer and Christian Struwe. That page is a combination of an article about an event (the death) and biographies of Fischer and Struwe. This raises a few questions that I don't know how to handle. (1) Just listing the two Karen Fischer's on a DAB page is easy enough, but what should happen to the redirect? (2) Should there be a different page just for Karen Fischer (the journalist) to distinguish it from the one I just finished (Karen Fisher, scientist)? (3) Are there other issues I have missed here? That's right, DaffodilOcean. Go to Karen Fischer, then pick where it says "(Redirected from Karen Fischer)" at the top, and it will take you to the redirection page itself. Sara Ramirez's Wikipedia Page and Infobox Images

So I updated the infobox image of Sara Ramirez because 1) having an outdated image of a person on their wikipage is annoying and 2) I know when I look back at photos of me from before my gender identity change I feel dysphoric and maybe that's not the case for Sara, we may never know, but I think the main photos on information pages should reflect their current appearance.

A user Serols reverted this change claiming it "did not appear constructive" but keeping images of people up to date is good practice and it seems to me like they only reverted this change due bigotry.

Maybe an updated image isn't as important as listing everything they've been in and new information about the person in question, but not changing it seems lazy at best and offensive at worst. Maybe not all images need to be updated if the person looks basically the same but when there's a huge difference in appearance or age it's important.

Sara Ramirez's page isn't the only one that needs to be updated. Elliot Page's Page is another and there's probably a lot more that I haven't seen.— Preceding unsigned comment added by TransDragon (talk • contribs)

TransDragon Wikipedia has articles, not "wikipages". It is true that the infobox image should reflect the most recent appearance if possible in many(though not all) cases- but it must be done in the proper manner, . Please don't assign motives to other editors that you cannot know, you aren't inside their heads. That something was removed is not in and of itself a sign of bigotry. The caption was problematic, and there could be copyright/licensing issues with the professional image that you attempted to place in the article. It isn't as simple as just grabbing an image off the internet somewhere. Please discuss your concerns on the article talk page. The sources for Arnold Majewski give two dates for his birth: 29 November 1892 and 11 December 1892. This is probably because Majewski was born in 1892 in Tallinn, Russian Empire, which had not yet adapted the Gregorian calendar at the time. How should this be marked in the article? It's called an infobox, ShUSP 01: there are hundreds of different ones for different kinds of subject. The easiest way to find the right one is often to find a different article on a subject of the same kind that already has an infobox, Edit (or Edit source) that article and copy the entire section at the top that starts

Use of picture on Wikipedia

I think this would be a good thing to use to illustrate the article about him. Would the image be of use there? And if so, can I upload the image to Wikipedia and/or Commons? okay i get it ! more or less this table is only related to the specific article and is useless beyond the article. So unless i can find a similar comparison article on EM field solvers with the Cenos product mentioned, then i can create a new one for the comparison. No, Paclogic, it's not about "the specific article", nor is it about being "based opon the samples and time of publication". It is based on notability, in the special sense that Wikipedia uses the word: broadly, a subject is notable if several people wholly unconnected with the subject have chosen to publish at some length about it in reliable places. Unless and until a subject - say, some software - meets those criteria, then Wikipedia is not interested in it, either in an article of its own, or in a list of items. If Cenos meets those criteria (or the specific ones for software), then somebody can write a Wikipedia article about it (remembering that Wikipedia is basically not interested in anything that the developers or promotoers of the software say or want to say about it, only in independent commentary about it), and then it can be added to lists such as the one you mention. --ColinFine (talk) 11:06, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

The point is that Cenos currently does NOT have a Wikipedia article, so it can't be added to the list article. If you feel that Cenos meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then you are welcome to write an article about it. ColinFine has already linked to the notability policy above. Click on that link to read what "notability" (not "respectability") means here. Also see WP:COMPANY for notability requirement that specifically apply to companies. The two pages you linked to above seem to be press releases, mostly written by the company itself, and merely announce a product release, so they do not contribute to notability. You need to find several independent reliable sources that write in depth about Cenos, rather than merely announcing a release. Note that WP:COMPANY specifically lists "standard notices, brief announcements, and routine coverage, such as: ... of a product or a product line launch, sale, change, or discontinuance" as an example of "trivial coverage" that does not contribute to notability. Hello, Kanak Rele. To add to Maproom's answer: Wikipedia is not a place to tell the world about yourself or your projects. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. So only if such sources exist about the dance school will it be possible to create an article about it: the article will not belong to the school, will not be under the control of the school, and won't necessarily say what the school would like it to say, as it should be based almost 100% on what independent people have published about the school, not on what the school says or wants to say.

Furthermore, creating a new article that is accepted is very very hard for inexperienced editors. If your school meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then somebody will create an article about it.

If you wish to go ahead after this caution, then please start by determining whether it meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability (which is what Maproom's answer is about). If it does not, give up. If it does, then read your first article, and be prepared for a gruelling and frustrating time as you put aside everything you know about the school and try to write a neutral, non-promotional draft based on what the independent sources say. --ColinFine (talk) 11:16, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia does not have mere "pages", it has articles. Those articles are typically written by independent editors, and they summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about a person, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person(or in your case a notable writer. If you meet that definition, independent editors will take note of your career and choose to write about you. Trying to force the issue by writing about yourself isn't always the best course of action. While not forbidden, autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged, in part because people naturally write favorably about themselves. To be successful in writing about yourself on Wikipedia, you would need to set aside everything you know about yourself and only write based on what others have said about you; most people have great difficulty doing that. Please see Your First Article for more information.

Hi Hanna Shanar, if you are looking for a place to publish your own profile then Wikipedia is not the right place unfortunately. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with articles about people that meet Wikipedia's notability standards. Your draft for an article has already been reviewed and declined as there's no sources that would indicate that you do meet these guidelines currently. This might be a classic case of WP:TOOSOON. Also, writing autobiographies is strongly discouraged, so once there is significant coverage it's best to not write the article yourself as well. How to clear Wikipedia search history

This is a bit odd, but I'm having a technical issue. Wikipedia seems to have memorized a list of six searches I previously carried out on Wikipedia, and displays them to me when I click into the Search box. Once I start typing, it goes to the regular suggestions, but when there's nothing typed into the box yet, the "search history" pops up below.

I'm 98% sure this isn't due to browser cookies - I've cleared all my cookies for all Wikimedia projects from Chrome twice now, and it still happens. I cannot find a Wikipedia setting that is causing this or way to clear it. Oddly, the six searches that appear seem to be static - it's been the same six popping up for the past year or more. @Ganesha811:. I've had the same "problem" with the Edge browser, which now uses the same engine as Chrome. A simpler solution is to hover over each individual entry and a "trash" icon should appear to the right. This allows any or all entries to be removed one-by-one. Problem with subheadings

For some reason I can't understand, the subheading "Under construction or proposed" has been moved to be before the first table, instead of after it (where it was originally).

In the editing window it appears to be in the right place. Why does it now appear in the wrong place and how do I fix this?

I am a member of the South Carolina Senate. A group of political opponents of mine have used your page to attack me over false allegations regarding my son and a custody battle 6 years ago that was settled in my favor and involved false allegations later disproved, dismissed, and after which I was awarded primary legal custody of my son.

At a personal level, I'd point out that if someone has cited a source, your quibble is with the source, not WP; if they have not cited a source, your best action in the first instance is to request that someone remove the uncited statement on the Talk page rather than here. • For what it's worth, I was the editor that wrote the article; to classify me as "a group of political opponents" of Senator Kimbrell would be inaccurate to say the least. The sources provided in the article fully back up the content that I wrote, so the Senator's gripe (as Elemimele pointed out) would be with those sources rather than with WP. According to the article and the source it cites, the charge against Kimbrell was dropped for lack of evidence (not disproved as he claims above, ok; but dropped). Is this about User:FahnbullehV/sandbox? If it is, the first of many problems is that you will need to let the reader know what ceramic rocket stoves are, before explaining how to insulate them. The IP above appears to be correct: McKenna is from County Monaghan, one of the three Counties of Ulster that are in the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland. The article correctly said so until a recent and fairly sizeable edit by AmorPatiturMoras, who added significant career updates to the article, but also incorrectly changed or inserted several passages to read "Northern Ireland."

In view of the mix of (likely) correct and incorrect information involved, AmorPatiturMoras's not inconsiderable experience (over six years, nearly 50 new articles) as an editor, and the potential contentiousness of the error or "error", (plus my own status as a deliberately non-Account editor at which some look askance), I have not simply reverted, and will leave it to their and other more experienced editors to sort out. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.59.177 (talk) 12:50, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

However, it has been linked to the 'country' of Northern Ireland rather than an area. Also, Ulster has been linked to and placed before NI as if it were a part of NI rather than NI being part of the region or province, known historically as Ulster. As a longtime user of -- but first-time contributor to -- Wikipedia, I'm stunned by how complicated you make things. Even the note I type now appears on my screen as minuscule. How about a decent font? Also, the acquaint myself with your uploading rules, I was shocked at the computer coding hurdles you put up. It all seems archaic to me. 2021DutchSailor The Visual Editor is easier for some users, as it does not require knowing wikicoding. As for signing posts, Wikipedia has users from all over the world with varying degrees of computer literacy, so such advisories are necessary to help the rest of us. Most changes to Wikipedia itself require a consensus, which isn't always easy to obtain. For example, most people would agree that the Main Page needs to be changed, but the disagreement is over what to change it to, which there is no agreement on. 331dot (talk) 08:35, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Image upload and display problem

I recently uploaded File:Mary Dunn photo in 1959.png. The image does not display and appears to be 0 × 0 pixels, but when I click on this link I can see the image. I have no idea how to fix this and I am unfortunately a very techinically challenged person. Anyone who could fix this or explain in very simple words would be a hero. It had not been submitted for review, so I added the template {{subst:Submit}} to the very top of the draft so it is now added to the pile awaiting review. We don't based content on donations(or the lack of donations) because if we did everyone would blackmail or bribe Wikipedia to get their way. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. If the bulk of such sources use the term pseudoscientist to refer to this peron, then we do as well. If you can demonstrate through coverage in independent reliable sources that this person is considered a legitimate scientist, please offer them on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 15:45, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
