Article import from another Wiki
Moin. After being completely confounded by the various help-pages, I am being so bold and just ask here: there's an article in de:wp I'd like to translate and publish in en:wp. As the content is, bar some minor edits and two references, my own work, I'm not overly troubled by a formal import - I can simply re-write the article in english, long as that would be acceptable. Just wondering whether that's so, and if there's any way to confirm relevance - while I might take a couple months to complete my work, knowingly apply to wait some three months or so for the translation to pass through the article wizard does not appeal to me. Topic is author and painter Helen Nicolay, daughter of Lincoln-biographer John George Nicolay. Regards, --G-41614 (talk) 23:14, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Article page name editing

Could you edit article’s name? 2601:244:4081:500:172:43E7:CA34:B014 (talk) 01:25, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User Talk Page Editing

My user talk page has become cluttered with outdated comments. I'm embarrassed to say so, but I've forgotten how to get rid of them. Help! Lou Sander (talk) 02:37, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Lou Sander: You may delete the comments on your user talk page if you want to, or you can archive the page using one of the methods at Help:Archiving_a_talk_page RudolfRed (talk) 02:52, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Archiving (plain and simple) is a shorter version. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:10, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but how do I delete the comments? Lou Sander (talk) 23:57, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

publish my article

hi, i had just written the article and push the button"publish changes", however, i can not search the article anywhere, neither in google nor in wikipedia, why?

Nicoleahua (talk) 10:27, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You have not written an article. You wrote a user page, but the content is not appropriate for a user page. Before trying to write an article, please read WP:Your first article. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:30, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
hi, why the content is not appropriate for a user page and where should i write the article in? Nicoleahua (talk) 10:36, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your user page content has now been moved to Draft space and submitted for review. Your user page is a place to tell about yourself as a Wikipedia editor or user, it is not a place to write an article and is not searchable by search engines. Do you have a particular interest in what you write being searchable? 331dot (talk) 10:43, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yes i do, what should i do if i want the public can search the article i had written Nicoleahua (talk) 10:52, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have declined your draft as it seems to rely on Linkedin.com rather too much and that is not a reliable source. Theroadislong (talk) 10:57, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What is your interest in the draft being searchable? Are you associated with the person you wrote about? 331dot (talk) 11:00, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yes i do, i work for him, should i mention it specifically? Nicoleahua (talk) 11:05, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the paid editing policy and make the required declaration on your user page. This is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory. 331dot (talk) 11:10, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
i see, i will make some changes Nicoleahua (talk) 11:05, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
and where is the exact place to write the article and publish it so that everyone can search the name johnson yeh on google and wikipedia Nicoleahua (talk) 11:03, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The page has been moved to draft as noted above; if you cannot see it, go via your contributions (link at top right) where you should see it listed as *Draft: (title)*. That is the preferred place to create a new item. When it is completed and you have complied with all the necessary requirements, it can be submitted for review. After passing that stage it is still subject to new page patrol and will not be indexed by search engines for 90 days or patrol has been completed, whichever comes first. Eagleash (talk) 14:06, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Note that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. You should probably remove all the citations to press releases (such as the Cointelegraph piece and the Bloomberg one) as well as to LinkedIn, and remove from the draft any information which is not cited to an independent source. Editing references in source mode

Hello there,

Could you help me to figure out how to edit the reference list in source mode? I want to make the required changes to the dates, but am not having any luck with getting into the correct screen to do so. Thanks and have a great day!! OneHealthVet (talk) 15:50, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The references are not normally in the Reference list in source mode, but are embedded in the text where they are cited. If you want to edit a reference, pick the caret by it to go to the place in the text where it is used, and edit that section. ColinFine (talk) 16:30, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ECDL/ICDL outdated profile

I would really appreciate it if the ICDL profile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Computer_Driving_Licence could be updated. The company has changed a great deal and the logo is very old, and also there are also a number of incorrect claims as the references included go back 20 years. I would be grateful if you could refer to https://icdl.org/about-us/ or I would be happy to supply correct text directly if that is easier. Many thanks in advance, Bronwen Daly Head of Marketing and Communications BDalyICDL (talk) 15:54, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gateway Pundit smear

More than one point of view should be offered, and the one up now is a declaritive, as if unquestionable accurate. I will add to it, but have no idea how to remove the damning statements made by the writer whose description is up now. 2601:342:8200:66B0:0:0:0:D636 (talk) 18:06, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably this is about The Gateway Pundit; the article is indefinitely semi-protected. IP user, you will need to make edit requests on the talk page, here. You should probably review our sourcing requirements and be prepared to make arguments (based on our policies) for why the sources currently being used are bad, and why the ones you provide, if any, are better. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:14, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, how write this article? What do I need to find? СтасС (talk) 18:07, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You've already found one reliable independent published source that discusses Wormser. simple edit: University of Chicago Laboratory School People

In my opinion, (Professor) Charles Fugo, University of South Carolina, should be on this list.

Many years ago I was able to make a simple addition to a Wikipedia entry but it appears this is no longer possible.

I am therefore requesting that someone at Wiki make the change.

Many thanks; love Wiki and encourage friends who have credit cards to donate; at least one has. 96.81.65.225 (talk) 18:37, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There should be nothing preventing you from making the edit; University of Chicago Laboratory Schools is not protected. However, there would need to be an article about him first. 331dot (talk) 18:43, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bibliography

There's an article lacking many citations in many sentences but the article has a Bibliography section. Does this mean the sentences are still unsourced? Dr Salvus 20:03, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr Salvus: It would be considered a general reference supporting the article instead of an inline citation supporting a specific fact or statement. See WP:IC for more info. RudolfRed (talk) 23:15, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that I've seen many FAs have this problem. Dr Salvus 23:21, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is not anything wrong with general references. Wikipedia:Featured_article_criteria says that inline citations are required where appropriate. You can discuss it on the article's talk page if you think there are citations missing. Also, articles change over time. It is possible that the article once met FA criteria but does not now. I believe there is a process for getting an article regraded, but I am not familiar with it. RudolfRed (talk) 23:27, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

UiawsbdNicoDude, I would recommend using one of WP:REDWARN, WP:TWINKLE, or WP:HUGGLE. They make it much quicker to revert vandalism and warn users. I use Twinkle. Based on your edits, you seem to be learning how Wikipedia works. Thank you for your contributions, however small, readers will thank you years in the future. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 02:10, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@uiawsbdnicodude: you can't use twinkle, you're not autoconfirmed yet, and you can't use huggle, you don't have rollback rights. not sure about redwarn. (cc @sungodtemple) 晚安lettherebedarklight 15:53, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Last I remember, RedWarn limits its full range of features until users become extended-confirmed. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:18, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Circular Redirect?

A user added a hatnote to the FOSTA-SESTA article, saying "SESTA" redirects here. For the ancient episcopal see, see Diocese of Sesta. But Diocese of Sesta is itself a redirect to Mauretania_Caesariensis#Episcopal_sees and the Sesta entry on that bullet-list links to Diocese of Sesta.

I'm not well versed in redirects, so maybe the circular nature of all that information isn't really important to Wikipedia functionality. But I wanted to ask about it, since it was so self-looping. CleverTitania (talk) 04:07, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CleverTitania, I think the redirect is of limited value, but the link in Mauretania_Caesariensis#Episcopal_sees is an interlanguage link to the Italian Wikipedia article it:Diocesi di Sesta as well as the redirect, so the links are not entirely circular. An individual is using Wikipedia articles without attribution for entire YouTube videos. I wrote most of the material in two of the articles used Big Boy Restaurants and Bob's Big Boy, as well as created graphics also used without attribution. He is attributing the videos only to himself. The videos are just the articles run through a text to speech generator. I'm ready to file YouTube copyright strikes and want to know how to coordinate with Wikipedia, without delay. As usual, Wikipedia help pages are belabored and confusing. How do I proceed? Any problems with me filing copyright strikes? βox73 (৳alk) 05:11, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Box73. Please read Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content. Cullen328 (talk) 06:34, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Box73. Unfortunately, I don't think there's really anything to coordinate when it comes to something like this. The copyright over content added to Wikipedia isn't held by the Wikimedia Foundation, except in cases where the content was originally added by the WMF itself as explained in WP:COPY. Individual users such as yourself are going to need to try and enforce your copyright on your own as explained in Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks. You can try emailing or otherwise contacting the WMF about this, but my guess is that it will just respond pretty much the same way. There are some examples of letters that can be sent to websites violating your copyright found at Wikipedia:Standard license violation letter that you might find helpful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:02, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for explaining that and pointing me in the right direction. — βox73 (৳alk) 08:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

article revision

Hi everyone,

sorry to disturb, I just wanted to have some clarification on the review of the draft. I am not sure how to proceed. I understood there are some problems on the notability of the person, but how do I fix those? I can find many articles talking about the subject, or also interviews. How do I proceed? Do I add them as sources in the article?

Thanks Patlor643 (talk) 08:42, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Patlor. Your draft has 27 references and every one of them is a line item in an entry list or a results list. These are of no value whatsoever in establishing notability. What is required is references to reliable independent sources that provide significant coverage of this person. Lists published by events he has competed are not independent and do not constitute significant coverage. Cullen328 (talk) 08:51, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for the help, 2 question:
1: a problem would be that the majority of the sourced I can find are in Italian, can they be used?
2: Second question is, when I find the articles, do I just add them to the sources?
Here is anyway some Italian articles that could prove significant coverage of the person. (Yeah, only problem is they are in Italian...)

@Patlor643 Foreign-language sources are OK if there are no equivalent English ones. The guidance is at WP:RSUE. I suspect that many of the ones you have listed here are based on interviews, so are not WP:INDEPENDENT. In getting drafts accepted, we look for quality, not quantity, so you only need about WP:THREE decent sources that possess all of the attributes mentioned by Cullen328. Incidentally, given that Patrese is Italian, I would have expected there to be an article about him in the Italian-language version of Wikipedia but I don;t see one there. Please don’t ask the same questions in multiple places, such as both here and at my talk page. If you must, mention it, so that we can check the other place and ensure effort is not duplicated (the advice given above by Mike Turnbull and the one I gave you on my talk page is substantially similar). Section-wise footnotes

Country codes: J–K has overall four footnotes for #North Korea, #South Korea and #Kosovo, collected on the bottom of the page. It would be better to have any footnote in the section of each country. This could be achieved by assigning the footnotes of each country to a distinct group and then list that group in the same section. The problem is that the group name will appear in the place of the note and should not be too long and outlandish. "note North Korea", "note South Korea", "note Kosovo" won't really do. Best would be to call it "note" in all places, but it should apply only to the same section. This is impossible - but what would be the best solution? --KnightMove (talk) 11:20, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Errors

There is an ERROR in your information about RAF BENSON's role in WWW2 . I lived on the former PROCESSING SITE of RAF Benson for 52 years and did a lot of research re:WW2 Photo Recce in the UK. THE Photo INTERPRETATION took place NEXT to my site at the OLD MANSION which IS NOT not in the historic village of Ewelme. There is NO SUCH Building called EWELME MANSION Now or in the PAST. I knew ROY NESBIT the author personally who was a WW2 Veteran and have been in touch with author Tony Spooner who knew Adrian Warburton, who was a WW2 Pilot and Hero in his lifetime who was seconded to another RAF Benson base formerly known as Mount Farm where the USAAF had a base themselves headed by Commander Elliot Roosvelt, son of President Roosevelt who had served with Adrian Warburton during the attack at Taranto. .Warburton tok part in the defence of Malta and was considered a Hero there but forgotten in the UK?? I am Baddegama and find your instructions EXTREMELY COMPLICATED compared to the past and have noticed Errors often. Some I have contacted have told me that I SHOULD NOT REGARD Wikipedia due to these errors . I have researched Photo Reconnaisance in the UK during WW2 as I lived on a site formerly used by RAF BENSON during WW2 having being born in 1942 and knew British soldiers during those years so have been interested ever since then.I now find that the Correction of Errors is far too complicated and would need a specialists help to do so. I have researched the above subject for many years with the help of Authors regarding the above subject. I have cited Published sources such as author and RAF historian, Roy Nesbit and author and WW2 veteran Tony Spooner Plus EX RAF BENSON serving personnel. What do you mean by Publishded. I have dealt with the EWELNE historian also who is NOT a published author but does research on EWELME village history. I was personally in touch with Author Roy Nesbit who contacted Tony Spooner who were both WW2 Veterans and have Newspaper article of myself and WW2 film I dug up on my property.Several have spotted ERRORS on Wikiepedia so we have now learned NOT to take your histories as 100% accurate. Baddegama (talk) 13:59, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by Published source? Why dont you ask the Royal Mail if there is such a place called EWELME MANOR or look up Google. Baddegama (talk) 14:01, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A published source means something like a book, journal, website, newspaper, or other place where anyone can go read the information. Just tell us where we can read about this ourselves. --Jayron32 14:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Baddegama If you can provide a source of the type Nesbit, Roy Conyers (25 June 2009). Reported Missing: Lost Airmen of the Second World War. p. 1–224. ISBN 9781781598580. with the relevant page numbers and whichever of Nesbit's many books is the one you wish to use as a source, then you can put it into the Talk Page of the relevant article to back up what you wish to add or change. That's what we mean by "reliably published sources". Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:11, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You said you have newspaper articles that back up your assertions. In order to cite a newspaper article, you should provide the following information about the article: Name of author, date of publication, title of article, name of newspaper. That allows other people to look up the article and verify that it says what Wikipedia says it says. If you have read a book by Roy Nesbit, and you want to use it to cite information in a Wikipedia article, you would provide the following information: Name of author (Roy Nesbit in this example), Title of book, page(s) being referenced.
So, if you find an error in a Wikipedia article (say, it says something took place in Ewelme when it actually took place in Elwell), you would click on the button that says "talk" at the top of the article you were reading, then you would say on the the talk page something to the effect of "According to Roy Nesbit, in (Name of book), page 83, the name of the town is Elwell, not Ewelme. Can someone help me fix it please?" (Or you could fix it yourself, but given your statements about finding our instructions extremely complicated, it's probably best to ask for help.) ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:42, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not entirely clear as to Baddegama’s concerns, but there most certainly is a place called Ewelme Manor,[1] which stands in close proximity to RAF Benson, as can clearly be seen on Google Earth. KJP1 (talk) 07:39, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Possible incorrect way to replace an image

I have a question about this image file from Wikimedia Commons: [File:Michael Weller, author.jpg] found on this web address: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Michael_Weller,_author.jpg#metadata: It appears that the recent “new version” is not a new version, but a completely different image by a different artist, which seems to be a good-faith mistake in the way to replace an image, as it affects the copyright agreement, and authorship claim — the 2nd uploader uploaded a new image without changing the related source/author information. Does something need to be done to straighten this out? Åüñîçńøł (talk) 19:51, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Komorijuno: You were trying to move the article to "mainspace", but you instead moved it to "project space". All namespaces except mainspace are indicated by a prefix word with a colon. The names of articles in Mainspace (i.e., where the actual Wikipedia articles live) do not have a namespace prefix at all. Therefore, you should have moved your article to Dogelon Mars instead of Wikipedia:Dogelon Mars. HOWEVER: you are lucky you made the mistake, because the article is not yet ready for mainspace and it would have been deleted. Now that it is in Draft space again, you can keep working on it and the submit it for review rather than attempting to force it into mainspace. -Arch dude (talk) 15:20, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft was "published" in that you saved it to Wikipedia's servers, but it was not "published" in that it was part of the encyclopedia. Many websites, including wikitia, archive drafts and/or other pages. This is allowed as long as they provide attribution. You agree to this every time you click "publish changes"(including here), as it says above the button, "By publishing changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL. If you have no account, Wikipedia has no way to know that the person sitting at your computer/holding your device on your IP address has seen a donation request or actually donated; there is no way to connect donation records to IP addresses(or even accounts). If you create an account, you can disable the donation requests in your account preferences. 331dot (talk) 19:09, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome and thank you for your question about donations! To hide the fundraising banners, you can create an account and uncheck Preferences → Banners → Empty Fundraising. The Wikimedia Foundation does not track the identity of IP addresses, so it doesn't know your age, income level or whether you donated in the past.
None of the Wikipedia volunteer editors here who add and improve content in articles receive any financial benefit. We all simply contribute our time because we care about building a great encyclopedia for you and innumerable others around the world to use.
If you cannot afford it, no one wants you to donate. Wikipedia is not at risk of shutting down, and the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the Wikipedia platform and is asking for these donations, is richer than ever.
We are led to believe that users who allow cookies are less likely to see these banners on repeat visits (further information is available here), and you are welcome to communicate directly with the donor-relations team by emailing donate@wikimedia.org. HTTP 400 Error

Greetings,

I am wondering if there is anyone else that is getting HTTP 400 error while trying to submit changes to articles. I have tried numerous times to submit my edit on one of the articles on Serbian Wikipedia and it has not worked. I've tried both Mozzila and Edge and same error.

I'm afraid that it's unlikely that anybody here can help you. The Serbian Wikipedia and the English Wikipedia are entirely separate projects. They're probably hosted on the same servers, but that's in the domain of Mediawiki, not the individual Wikipedias. I've just been onto sr:Главна_страна with no problem. Data mining to make a chronological list

So, I was wondering if there's a way to use a program to go through a Pagepile of wikipedia articles about individual humans and arrange them chronologically by the category that indicates what year the person was born in, from oldest to youngest. 2602:306:C541:CC60:C067:5D78:17CE:2ACA (talk) 05:02, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This can be done using a Wikidata query. Wikidata is a sister project that is a structured database and which includes a query language that is easy to use. It has an entry for every Wikipedia article, in every language. I have to re-learn it each time because I use it rarely, but it only takes about five minutes to re-learn. Perhaps start at d:Wikidata:Introduction. Don't get discouraged: you will get the hang of it quickly. You will probably create your "page pile" using a query, and then produce the sorted list based on the date-of-birth attribute. This is not exactly the year-of-birth category. It is almost always more universally and consistently used than the category.

See the note at the top of this page "The Wikipedia help desk is a place where you can ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia". We have a Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science, which would be more suited to this sort of question, but from a brief look at one of the sources [2] cited in our Tetraethyllead article, it doesn't look like the sort of process someone with 'a block of lead' and no apparent knowledge of chemistry should be attempting. Where are you proposing to get lead-sodium alloy from? Or ethyl bromide? Or pyridine? Do you own a temperature-controlled reaction vessel and reflux condenser? And do you have the necessary protective equipment to carry out the process without poisoning yourself? And what sort of 'business' requires the synthesis of the substance anyway? The only approved use for the substance is in aviation fuel, and for obvious reasons that isn't the type of business carried out by amateurs. AndyTheGrump (talk) 05:51, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@СтасС - Your draft is not submitted for review. Additionally, it appears to be cited to one source: one of the key aspects of WP:GNG is multiple sources. Two good ones can be enough, and three is definitely enough. I have seen that you have a Sources section: although this is acceptable, it is much clearer if you use WP:Inline citations. At the very least, you should merge your Sources and References sections to prevent confusion. casualdejekyll 15:49, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you want an admin to do? Reviews of drafts, when they are submitted, do not need an admin. Before you submit the draft for review it would be wise for you to include at least three citations; so far you only have one. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:54, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, СтасС. I am an administrator, and David Biddulph is correct that adminstrators have no special powers regarding content. That being said, adminstrators have a lot of experience. Wormser is clearly notable, so you should continue. The AP/New York Times obituary is a good source, but you need multiple sources. I feel safe in assuming that major French newspapers published more lengthy and detailed obituaries. Many assertions are unreferenced and not verified for readers. The death date is listed as the date of publication of the obituary, but that says his family did not reveal his actual date of death. It is unlikely that it was the same day.
