Removing a bullet from a template

Can someone please help me remove the bullet that appears after the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award link in {{Men's college basketball award navbox}}? See how there is no bullet after Sporting News in the "National players of the year" subsection - that's how I'd like it to look. Thank you. SportsGuy789 (talk) 22:29, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking into this and it's revealing some very odd quirks of navbox behavior, I'll post a more detailed answer here in a bit. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So... appears to be a bug in either module:navbox or Wikimedia, from what I can tell. For a short example, see the case below:
Viewing this in Parsoid (a newer/experimental wikitext renderer) renders it correctly.
So I should probably bring this to template talk:navbox (or perhaps VPT) and see what they have to say. As for temporary fixes, switching the order of the "player awards" and "head coach awards" sections might fix it, but that's speculation. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:37, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I started a section at Template talk:navbox. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:47, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for helping dive into this. Markup and code is pretty out of my expertise, and the way the navbox layout is currently set up is how it should look (regarding the comments in the linked talk page discussion about how there ought not to be a blank space... deleting the blank space screws up the line break in the navbox). In an "explain it to me like I'm a n00b" way, what is being looked into to fix the bullet point? SportsGuy789 (talk) 03:59, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Finding articles which cite a specific book

Is there any place I can search a title and find all Wikipedia articles with that title in References? Schaffe99 (talk) 00:46, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. But simply searching for the book title (and, if this is too commonly occurring a string, supplementing this with the author's surname), usually brings a result that I find easy to use. -- Hoary (talk) 01:23, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Schaffe99 See H:INSOURCE for a way to find text within the source code of articles. That won't guarantee the hits will be within references but if you are lucky and your book title is unique, the output should be close to what you need. ISBNs can also be searched that way. Questions of what citations to use.

Hello, I'm just asking if one of these citations (below) is reliable and independent. Please type in your opinions and reply below to help me on what citations below for me to use for this article. Thanks!

List of citations I am wondering if they are reliable or not.

    • TechRadar • SuperCar Blondie • Motor Authority • Motor1.com • The Verge • Green Car Reports • Car and Driver • Motor Trend ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 01:33, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MinecraftPlayer321, go to Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources and look for each of these there. Then go to Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. For each of the eight that didn't appear in "Perennial sources", feed its title into "Search the noticeboard archives", and see what you get. If what you find is unclear, or if the source isn't mentioned at all, then ask about it at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. (NB they're potential sources, which you might cite; if you cited one, the result would be a "citation".) -- Hoary (talk) 01:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MinecraftPlayer321, as far as I know, The Verge is considered a reliable source to use. You can check whether your questioned sources are deprecated or reliable per WP:RS/P#Sources, what Hoary said. 2001:EE0:4BE2:4ED0:9496:F804:F0D4:C864 (talk) 02:08, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks you both! ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 04:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MinecraftPlayer321: I have some experience and knowledge with editing automotive topics. Motor Trend and Car and Driver are as independent and reliable as they come; they are rock-solid sources. They have been around a long time, and have proper editorial oversight; I have used them extensively with no problems. I recognize the names of a few other sources listed but haven't had enough experience with them to vouch for their reliability. You may wish to raise this matter at WP:RSN for generalized community input, or WT:CAR for specialized input from people who are likely more interested and knowledgeable about cars. Numbering of Endnotes

I am writing an article for Wikipedia called British Prime Minister's Homes. It's in my sandbox if you want to access it.

My issue is this: I have written it in WORD first and then I have imported it to my sandbox for further editing. Everything is working fine EXCEPT: when I import the endnotes the numbering changes from 1,2,3,etc in WORD to i,ii,iii, etc in my Wiki sandbox. I have spent all this evening trying to figure out how to change the numbering without success. BTW it is easy to change the numbering in WORD. ~~~ Terence (talk) 02:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Almost everything may be "working fine", Terence, but the formatting of its references is completely incompatible with that of Wikipedia. I mean, the difference between 1, 2, 3 and i, ii, iii is a minor matter compared with the fact that your references, however numbered, won't work. (Wikipedia and MS Word were not designed for each other.) See Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates and the other help pages to which it links. (You've worked out how to use internal links, though; congratulations on that.) -- Hoary (talk) 04:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So this means I have to redo all my end notes one by one in Wiki?
Thanks for the VERY prompt reply. . Terence (talk) 15:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You use a limited number of source books and many references within each one. The style of citations that suits this is to use the {{sfn}} template. See that link for the details. And, yes, this does mean redoing them all. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:36, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a page without a physical source

I wanted to add some information to a page on Wikipedia regarding a village my family grew up in, but I obviously don't have a physical source online and want to help them add some information to it. How could I go about adding some information to the page? 2601:18D:4800:5900:D4B8:20DF:A3A1:4E3F (talk) 03:51, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

do you have a reliable source? if no, don't add it. ltbdl (talk) 03:54, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As ltbdl indicates, the source must be reliable, but it doesn't have to be online. A book from a major publisher would probably do; a book published by a local enthusiast, or the local historical society, probably wouldn't. ColinFine (talk) 11:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing a YouTube video

There is a video on YouTuber to which confirms a persons ethnicity (Star Wars Theory), by their own admission, and I wished to acknowledge this under the category section on the respective person's Wikipedia page. Would this be acceptable? As another Wikipedia user has reverted the addition. Using YouTube as a reference citation, more so to the fact there's very little information on the said person's page. Many thanks. Bartallen2 (talk) 04:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, there being little reliable sourcing on a page does not mean it is acceptable to lower the bar for reliability. I would be wary of adding these claims, though it's likely fine to use a primary source for them, because they might be considered undue. Is it truly important enough to be in their article? Sometimes so, sometimes not. Remsense 04:28, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bartallen2 Adding it as a category only, no. Categories should be obvious from text in the article, see WP:CATV. On citing Youtube in general, see WP:RSPYT. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:41, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the Star Wars Theory article, even if the source checks out, adding a "Personal life" or whatever section just to add "He is [whatever ethnicity]" doesn't strike me as a good idea. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:51, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, I've never heard of this guy, and I'm skeptical about WP-articles on youtubers in general, but with coverage like [1], I get it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Does this count?

So I was looking on Stereogum and I found a song that is known as a "glam quoting classic". Would I put that song as glam rock? Iamthegoat524 (talk) 04:50, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Without knowing the specific song and its content, it's impossible to be sure, but I don't think it can be applied as a general principle. Some rock songs utilise or quote music from classical composers (examples: A Whiter Shade of Pale, Nut Rocker) – that doesn't make them classical. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 05:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
the song is pump it up by elvis costello Iamthegoat524 (talk) 06:11, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having lived through the Glam rock era, and having just re-listened to the song, I have to say that it does not seem particularly "glam-rockish" to me. But then, what is the sound of Glam rock – it was a diversely sourced and influenced movement and more defined by the appearance and attitudes of its performers, and in those respects I never thought of Elvis Costello as "Glam". Others may have different opinions. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 08:07, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Caps for headings

I recently edited an article (see below) and part of that edit included capitalizing the words in a heading. Someone else changed the caps back to lower case and said that "we try to minimise (sic) caps where possible." I'm confused. Capitalizing headings is a basic rule of English as far as I know. Is there a special rule for Wikipedia? If so, why? My mind is boggled. Any help would be appreciated.

    @Citizen127 The WP "rule" is
"Section headings should generally follow the guidance for article titles (above), and should be presented in sentence case (Funding of UNESCO projects in developing countries), not title case (Funding of UNESCO Projects in Developing Countries)." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:50, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The rule Gråbergs Gråa Sång mentions is identified as the "Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Section headings". I read a lot of publications from many publishers, and each has their own manual of style that sometimes varies substantially from what I learned in school. In this case, Wikipedia is actually following the same standard that International Organization for Standardization uses. DMacks (talk) 10:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Short link: MOS:TITLECAPS. Bazza (talk) 10:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That one is related but for article titles, we're talking section headings. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:15, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Thanks. I'll add MOS:SECTIONCAPS and its avatar MOS:HEADCAPS as well. Bazza (talk) 10:18, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your prompt reply. I understand now, we are using the British imperial style, disappointing. Citizen127 (talk) 10:38, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is indeed a world-wide project, not a US thing. But if you want to stick it to the Brits, you can highlight our standardization of using 'sulfur' rather than 'sulphur'. DMacks (talk) 10:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why is it disappointing...? Qcne (talk) 15:37, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

May worth a while, but would you mind help me a bit? Is it better to see the article ends by Its name in English is cee (pronounced /ˈs/), plural cees as most of the alphabetical pages indicate that. There is no reason why the texts of different articles about related subjects (such as letters in an alphabet) have to have exactly the same form of wording: this is an imaginary 'rule' that you have invented yourself. If you want to, change it yourself: if anybody disagrees, they will say so, but it is very unlikely that anyone will care. {The poster formerly known as 897.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 18:28, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Citation help needed

I'm editing children's author A. A. Milne's article, and in the Introduction I see a need to explain in the very first sentence the difference between Milne's originally titled book Winnie-the-Pooh and the unhyphenated version of the spelling by which most modern readers would be familiar for the name of the eponymous main character, a bear.

I think this is the first Wikipedia citation I've made, or if I ever did one it was over a year ago, so I'd much appreciate some guidance before I make it.

    1. My proposed wording in the text is underlined. Alan Alexander Milne (/mɪln/; 18 January 1882 – 31 January 1956) was an English writer best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh, as well as for children's poetry. Although Milne used hyphens in the name of the book's main character the teddy bear and elsewhere, modern readers are likely to be more familiar with the unhyphenated version "Winnie the Pooh" popularised by Walt Disney's cartoon movie. FOOTNOTE NUMBER WOULD GO HERE
    2. How do I create a footnote in editing mode? I don't see an icon to do that in the editing options, including the link because that would seem merely a generic way to link a chunk of text with a specific web address. I need to put the following information in the footnote. I'm also not sure if the name of the website where the cited article can be found is acceptable without further explanation of it (which in this case is an affiliation with Disney). Foster, Tim. “Ten Things You May Not Know About Winnie the Pooh”. Celebrations. https://celebrationspress.com/2017/10/02/ten-things-you-may-not-know-about-winnie-the-pooh/#:~:text=Winnie%20the%20Pooh%20wasn't,a%20boon%20to%20typists%20everywhere. Retrieved 19 February 2024.

    Augnablik (talk) 15:09, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way is to use {{efn}} or "extended footnote". Use {{efn|Although Milne used hyphens in the name of the book's main character the teddy bear and elsewhere, modern readers are likely to be more familiar with the hyphenless version "Winnie the Pooh" popularised by Walt Disney's cartoon movie.}} and then have a section at the bottom with the title "footnotes" and {{notelist}} as the only entry:
... as well as for children's poetry.[a] Martin of Sheffield
I've also added in a citation to show how to embed them in an EFN. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Notes

    1. ^ Although Milne used hyphens in the name of the book's main character the teddy bear and elsewhere, modern readers are likely to be more familiar with the hyphenless version "Winnie the Pooh" popularised by Walt Disney's cartoon movie.[1]

Edit count that does not need manual updating

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking into adding an edit count to my user page that I do not need to update manually every time. Is there a way to do so, via a bot or some kind of wikicode?

    Thanks! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 15:25, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cocobb8 Hello there! I am not sure if this is the correct information you may need, but I tried my best to understand: If you want to see your edit count, check out your history tab that is located on the right side of your user page, in between the "Edit Source" tab and the symbol 🖤. There, every time you edit your userpage, it will automatically put and show your recent and oldest edits. Hope that will help! - ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 17:39, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MinecraftPlayer321I'm trying to display a live-edit count on my user page as the one on my history tab that I don't have to update all the time. If that doesn't make sense, I can try to explain anothe way :-) Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 17:43, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cocobb8 Hello again. I think that you're trying to say that you want to put a version of the history tab into your userpage. As far as I know, there is no template to put a version of the history tab into your userpage, but if there is a way, other editors, as well as I, will inform you immediately. For now, please wait patiently as other editors and I search for the solution. - ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 17:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Awesome thanks! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 18:08, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cocobb8 You don't say why you want your edit count on your user page. If it is just so you can see the count yourself, a much easier way to do that is to enable navigation popups at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. This feature does all sorts of useful stuff, including allowing editors to hover their cursor over your user name here to see immediately that you have 2126 edits since 1 March 2023. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:05, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull It's just so that my edit count userbox can update by itself as well as my service award. I guess it's ok if there's no way to do it :-) Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:04, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cocobb8 OK, then there are userboxes to do that. See Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/Stats and tools/edit count. The one you probably want is {{User active edits}}. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:12, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that doesn't update automatically, it just links to the tool which gives the count. So do other templates like {{User contrib}} and the one in {{Infobox Wikipedia user}}. There isn't one which does automatically update. Beware WP:EDITCOUNTITIS. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:32, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Deleting a page

How does someone delete a Wiki page that was created about them without their authorization? This person is not famous, notable, celebrity or public figure. Thank you! MBoland71 (talk) 17:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MBoland71 An article subject cannot grant or deny permission for their to be an article about them; any more than they could grant or deny permission for The New York Times to write about them. Articles are also not deleted merely due to the wishes of the subject. If you wish to argue that an article, or content in an article, violates Wikipedia policies(like the Biographies of Living Persons policy) or that the subject is not notable, there are ways to start a deletion discussion. 331dot (talk) 18:01, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Iammissnobody: I see other, major problems with this. First, the description of the case that "exploded into a full-scale media sensation" contains material not directly relevant to this person. Secondly, the grotesque bulk of this template. -- Hoary (talk) 22:08, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Iammissnobody, regarding your template: there are ways to handle large numbers of names, but that's not it. For some ideas, please see the Holocaust Navbox at French Wikipedia: fr:Modèle:Palette Shoah en France, and look down the left column for labels Victimes and Survivants and see how that is done. Mathglot (talk) 09:55, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot, that's a good idea. i put some comments on the talk page of Template:Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia - Wikipedia because Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia#Recipients list has the same thing. still new at editing and not sure how to handle duplication in two different templates. by the way, thanks for sharing the link, it's a very good starting point! nMyghet (talk) 11:13, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Iammissnobody, You're very welcome. Typically, duplicate content can be handled by transclusion, but there are lots of ways to do it. Have a look at WP:SELTRANS, and at template {{Excerpt}}. And maybe even how the documentation at different citation templates like {{cite book/doc}} or {{cite journal/doc}} both pick up the same words to describe parameters like |author=. (Hint: see {{Citation Style documentation#author}}.) If content is the same, but styling or presentation is different, there are ways. If you run into any issues, ping me from the template, and I'll try and help as I can. Mathglot (talk) 11:27, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating a Wilkipedia entry

Years ago we submitted a Wilipedia entry - and it was rejected. I forget the details of why it was rejected, but we are a nonprofit organization and I think our entry was written too specifically to describe our project. We now want to submit an entry that is acceptable, but do not want to devote our resources to doing that without getting a clearer understanding of what is acceptable. 2603:301B:1CC8:4000:7413:A8B8:19A5:13A0 (talk) 22:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. WIkipedia is not for you to tell the world about your nonprofit, no matter how worthy it is: that is called promotion, and is forbidden anywhere on Wikipedia.
If your organization has been discussed in some depth by people wholly unconnected with it, published in reliable sources, then it is possible an article could be written, based on what those sources say about it (good and bad), not on what the organization says or wants to say.
You are discouraged from writing this article yourself, though not forbidden. If you choose to do so, you will be required to make the mandatory declaration of your status as a paid editor called for in our terms of service, and then you will need to use the articles for creation process to write a draft and have it reviewed.
Note that writing a new article is a challenging task for a new user even if they haven't a conflict of interest, and most editors who try it before they have spent several months learning how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles, have a miserable and frustrating experience.
Note also that if such an article is written (whether by you or not) you will not own it or control it, and it may end up containing material that you don't want it to. See an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. ColinFine (talk) 22:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't attempt it. A corporation's description of itself properly belongs on the corporation's own website; and similarly an NPO's description of itself properly belongs on the NPO's own website. But if you're compelled (?) to attempt it, see "When your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia" and the Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. -- Hoary (talk) 22:17, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We did not "tell the world" about our nonprofit. We acted as an outside party describing the activity. The editor obviously thought otherwise. We have been around doing what we do for decades and I am sure eventually somebpdy will create a Wikipedia entry about what we do and what others do that might be similar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by User:2603:301B:1CC8:4000:7413:A8B8:19A5:13A0 (talkcontribs) 22:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ta 0003: Considering [2] (a very inappropriate edit which has been reverted), it appears your question has nothing to do with templates. The title of a page is changed by moving the page. Hi @Very Polite Person, I don't recall ever seeing that as an option or any article which has done that. (To be clear, as current exists, you'd like the Locke source first then Saltz followed by Dilawar and so on?) As far as I know, {{Reflist}} (and the underlying <references> tag) only support ordering the refs in the reference list by order they're first encountered in the body of the article. Is there any particular reason you want to use a non-standard ordering? Or let me/us know if I've misunderstood your question. Skynxnex (talk) 19:44, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I had no idea and am brushing up on years of IP editing and using wikimedia and similar in private (corp/org) environments. Change Photo on my Wiki Page

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to change/remove an image of myself on my Wiki page and change it to a new one? Can you help me please?

    Bill Barretta Billbarretta19 (talk) 21:53, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that Bill Barretta is Wikipedia's article about you, it is NOT your "wiki page". Theroadislong (talk) 21:57, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    The other picture
There's another picture already at Wikimedia Commons, which could easily be substituted. Otherwise, someone will have to upload a picture of you there which is not (too) restricted by copyright. The easiest way is to find someone who has, or is willing to create, a Wikimedia Commons account, and ask them to take a picture of you and upload it there. Otherwise, copyright law makes things more tedious. Maproom (talk) 22:47, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, please be reassured that every article in Wikipedia is a page, and that the genitive case (as seen in my, your, etc) is used to express any relationship between a noun phrase (me, etc) and a nominal (page, etc). This is most obvious with "birth", "death", "toothache" and the like: I can idiomatically preface any of these with my without any (ridiculous) suggestion that I somehow possess it. Thus "my photo" may mean the photo I possess, the photo I took, the photo taken of me, the photo I'm assigned to investigate, and more; similarly, "my article/page" may mean the one I possess (though this wouldn't be possible in Wikipedia), the one about me, the one I've been working on, and more. So yes, your Wiki page: if you don't like the photo that's currently on Bill Barretta, just ask somebody else to (i) take a better one, (ii) sign up for Wikimedia Commons, and (iii) upload the better photo to Wikimedia Commons. Please don't edit Bill Barretta yourself; instead, post requests or suggestions (such as that the current photo be replaced by such-and-such a freshly uploaded photo) for that page on Talk:Bill Barretta. Thank you for your trouble. -- Hoary (talk) 23:26, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're not wrong but most casual/irregular visitors in my experience will treat a "page" differently than they would treat an article, and that difference often leads to difficulty for the user, difficulty thst could be somewhat avoided if they had the right mindset early on. Just the way I see it, your mileage may vary. 331dot (talk) 23:42, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
331dot, if I'm not wrong, I hope that it can't also be said of me that I'm "not even wrong". If I were a casual/irregular visitor to this website and were told that the page about me was NOT [so capitalized!] my wiki page, I'd infer that my interlocutor either was somehow deranged or was treating me as an idiot. More generally, somebody coming here to politely ask a reasonable question shouldn't first have to go through some bizarre kind of linguistic purification ritual. I wish Billbarretta19 the best in using Talk:Bill Barretta to prompt disinterested editors to make improvements to his wiki page. -- Hoary (talk) 00:58, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Everyone's different but I personally appreciate being informed about things like terminology so that I know I'm on the same page as the people I'm talking with.
I also wish Mr. Baretta the best and am a bit surprised that it has not been suggested that he simply upload a selfie which would avoid any copyright difficulties and save him the time of hunting someone down to take a picture of him and having them upload it. 331dot (talk) 01:49, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We're all different? I'm not. How about first an attempt to answer the question or comply with the request, followed by something like "Incidentally, we'd normally call this an article rather than a page"? As for selfies, they can of course be done well, but a large percentage are horrible; and I for one have more success handing my camera to a stranger than I do taking a selfie. (Though a problem is that for the under-25s in my part of the world, even all-automatic models of camera tend to be historical curios belonging with typewriters, slide rules, acetylene lamps, mangles, and so forth.) -- Hoary (talk) 02:31, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Billbarretta19: Please see Wikipedia:A picture of you. Also, it's unfortunate but your account will have to be blocked until you confirm your identity (after all, you would not want some other person impersonating you). Details of how to do so will be left on your talk page. It's nothing personal. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:50, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to publish a page I created in my sandbox

Hello, I just created a Wikipedia page/article in my sandbox and published the changes. However, I don't see the information when I do a search within Wikipedia. Wallaby5312 (talk) 22:40, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That is because the page is still in your sandbox and has not been moved to "mainspace" and become an article. The "publish" button does not publish the article in that obvious sense, it just publishes it in the legal sense of releasing some of your copyright in what you have created. (Yes, that's stupid, but Wikipedia's lawyers insist we do it like that.) However, your sandbox contents fall well short of the Wikipedia requirements for a mainspace article. Maproom (talk) 22:55, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What very little you write in User:Wallaby5312/sandbox about this person, Wallaby5312, suggests that it's far too soon to attempt to create an article about them. -- Hoary (talk) 23:31, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you click "Search in" and "All" on the search results page then your sandbox does appear. Searches are only in mainspace by default. That's where our encyclopedia articles are. It's called "(Article)" in the "Search in" box. The content of User:Wallaby5312/sandbox is not suited for that. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:57, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extensive replacement text for existing entry

    Hello Help Desk,

I have written an extensively expanded article on the educationalist and psychotherapist George Lyward* (3400 words) based on and including the one that is currently there (750 words). This being such a major change I did not want to just plonk it in there without any warning and thought I should run it by a senior editor first. Can you advise me please ? Many thanks.

    *George Lyward

    Taraxacum44 (talk) 15:42, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Taraxacum44 There are no "senior editors" here, just volunteers, some of whom are more experienced than others. You have not linked your proposed new article, just the existing one, and I don't see anything in your contribution history where the enlarged draft might be. There is no harm in being WP:BOLD and "plonking it in", with a suitable edit summary. If someone objects, they may have to revert the whole of your work rather than attempt to salvage the parts they may be happy with. However, that would just mean you would need to discuss a more incremental approach via the article's Talk Page. See WP:BRD. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:59, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
.... incidentally, if you expand the article more than fivefold, the new version may qualify for a "did you know" on the Main Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:08, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Promotional-reading draft

My active-duty service ended in 1989 due to a medical retirement. I was broken! I was wounded! I now needed someone to advocate, support, and care for me. I began to uncover and face the abuse I experienced in pursuing my desired career. As a woman, especially of color, these sacrifices made and achievements reached came at a great cost. I didn’t seek it for recognition or glory but simply out of duty and honor for my job to protect our freedom in service to our country. I know firsthand the struggles faced by women who joined the Armed Forces in 1975, often left alone to fight their internal and external battles without the guidance of older female leadership. The struggle can harm one’s physical and mental health without proper support and resources. I decided to allow my pain to fuel my purpose to help fellow comrades. On February 24, 2010, I founded Freedom Gifts, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to serving veterans, their families, and their caregivers. Freedom Gifts is a supportive ministry designed to help those who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Military Sexual Trauma (MST), anxiety, and depression. We aim to provide a loving, understanding, and healing community for veterans. Our outreach programs assist veterans in various areas where they may need advocacy, care, and support. At Freedom Gifts, we communicate and understand the language of service, committing to kindness, respect, honesty, compassion, faith, friendship, and spirituality. I also focused on advocating for and caring for my close relative, a cousin who was like a nephew. Antonio, fondly known as Tony, lived with me briefly during my military career. I cherish the memories of teaching him how to walk. He joined the Marines and became a veteran grappling with the severe effects of Multiple Sclerosis. Eventually, I brought him into my home to provide him with the needed care and support. I also assisted him in getting his social security and disability benefits. Despite becoming bedridden and losing most of his bodily functions, he had a resilient spirit and managed to smile through his struggles. He took his first steps with me and his last breath in life with me. Providing care for Tony until his passing in 2021 was one of my life’s most rewarding and fulfilling experiences and the ultimate expression of “freedom gifts.” My faith in God, my family, and the support of my personal angel, Mother Inez Allen, have been instrumental in my success on this journey. Thank you for visiting our page and learning more about Freedom Gifts. I am grateful for your interest, participation, partnership, and support. Together, we can create a supportive community for our veterans, their families and caregivers, and those who care for them. So, let’s unite in our mission, lighting the path of compassion—because at Freedom Gifts, we’re not just a community, we’re a family. Caroline.j.ashleyy (talk) 16:13, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Caroline.j.ashleyy, hello. Unfortunately, Wikipedia isn't a place to write an autobiography, or advertise your private interests or charity work, we are an encyclopedia with a neutral point of view based on reliable sources. Detailed Advice on Dealing with Edit Conflicts ?

Is there a page that provides detailed advice about what an editor should do when they get the message that there is an edit conflict, which is known in computing as a race condition? Although the handling of race conditions on editing talk pages and articles is more robust than it was ten years ago, I still find that sometimes, when I give what I think is the right answer to preserve both the intervening edit and my edit, that either the intervening edit or my edit gets thrown away. The edit conflict screen that is displayed is not self-explanatory. Is there detailed advice on how the second editor should respond to the screen? Robert McClenon (talk) 18:09, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: can you provide more detail regarding how the instructions at WP:EDIT CONFLICT, particularly the Layout of the edit-conflict page and Resolving an edit conflict sections, are inadequate? If someone had asked me the question Where do I go to see how to resolve edit conflicts?, I would have linked that how-to-guide without much additional commentary. VQuakr (talk) 18:18, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:VQuakr - Okay. It says what I have too often found, which is that it is sometimes necessary to save one's changes to the clipboard or to Notepad or Word. (It also briefly annoyed me by describing what happens when Alice has made large changes and Bob has made small changes. I had made large additions and another editor had made a small edition, and I am not Alice.) It appears that there may not have been a right answer for my situation other than saving my changes to Notepad. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I basically agree with you, it is a problem without any good answers, and it isn't the kind of thing where you get a chance to build up skills. There are different sorts of scenarios (e.g. whether you're editing a section or the whole page, what options you have enabled, etc.), and the behavior may depend on your preferences. One strategy that some people may use is just to make small (and hence quick) edits. But it can be annoying when people make many small edits instead of doing them as a single edit.
IMO, if you have an edit that can't be done quickly, the better strategy is to go do your edits outside of the page you're editing. Then when you've figured out exactly what changes you want, copy and paste them to the article you were going to apply those changes to, so that there's negligible chance of having it identified as an edit conflict. Of course, if the original page has changed, you need to figure out how to merge your changes in. Fabrickator (talk) 19:31, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. I tend to use multiple source editing windows instead of notepad, but that's just potato/potahto. Ultimately I think this boils down to working within the limits of the software. In my experience most ECs are easy to resolve by copy/pasting my conflicting comment back into its intended location, but for those few that are more complicated things get messy very quickly. VQuakr (talk) 19:36, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Robert McClenon: I've found the Paragraph-based Edit Conflict Interface to be helpful in resolving conflicts, but not perfect. If you'd like to try it, you can enable it in your Preferences > Beta features. Hope this helps. GoingBatty (talk) 20:28, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you, User:GoingBatty. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:13, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will also comment, only indirectly related, that there are some race conditions that are not detected as edit conflicts, because they are not the result of two users editing, but of one user editing and another taking some action that is not an edit, usually with Twinkle, or two editors taking different non-edit, such as Twinkle, actions. They are usually easily recognized by an editor who has a computing or electrical engineering background, who will see that they are race conditions, but can be puzzling to other editors. These sometimes happen on New Page Patrol or Articles for Creation, because two editors may see the same article when it becomes available for review. For example, one reviewer tries to nominate an article for deletion while another reviewer is moving the article into draft space, or two reviewers try to accept the same draft at the same time. Usually these collisions are harmless but confusing. Should there be documentation that mentions them? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:13, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MinecraftPlayer321. The file was uploaded to Commons and deleted there, so it's out of our jurisdiction. At a glance, it was a good deletion, since it looks like you got the images from a website that is copyrighted. If you're not sure about an image's copyright status, you should ask for help before uploading it. I would be happy to answer questions of that nature to the best of my ability.
There are a lot of rules here, and at Commons, and it's often true that we only learn about them when we accidentally break them. I encourage you to respond with more questions, and less calls for blocking the people that bring the rules to your attention. Commons doesn't accept copyrighted works. Wikipedia doesn't accept copyrighted works unless our use is compliant with the WP:NFCC policy. It's unlikely that copyrighted photos of a car would meet criterion #1, since a copyright-free photo of the car could be created. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 22:14, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since the concept of the car had not been launched on model, do I have to wait until someone took a copyright-free photo in-person in the car show, will they post it on Commons? ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 22:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe. You could also reach out to photographers, or the car company, to see if they'd be willing to release one for the Wikipedia page. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 22:18, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Currently the article on Erich Berneker is pretty much just a translation of the corresponding article on enciklopedija.hr (Hrvatska enciklopedija), which is copyrighted; much the same text is found on ru.wiki too. Does this constitute plagarism and/or a breach of copyright? What should be done about it, if yes? — Phazd (talk|contribs) 23:04, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Phazd: Please investigate further. Our article has been in place since 2014, so there is a possibility that the copy went in the other direction. If by "ru.wiki" you mean the Russian Wikipedia, you can check the creation date there. I don't know about the other one. neither of them is older than ours, as do not need to do anything, but you might put a note on the article's talk page with the results of your investigation. If either if them is older, come back here. -Arch dude (talk) 00:42, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Phazd. Can you determine whether the content originated on ru.wikipedia.org or on Hrvatska enciklopedija? If the first, then there the only problem is to properly attribute the source. If the second, there may well be a copyright violation. If the content originated on the English Wikipedia, then there is no problem. Cullen328 (talk) 00:55, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude @Cullen328 It's trivial to prove that the source is Hrv. enc. The earliest version of the WP article on Berneker, from 2014, cites Hrv. enc. at the end of each of its three paragraphs (the editor who created the article is a native Croatian speaker) - it would make no sense for Hrv. enc. to copy from a WP article that is itself entirely sourced from Hrv. enc. Also, the Russian version was created in 2020 by translation from English - it says so in the edit history there... Not to mention Hrv. enc. is a respectable encyclopedia that was published in print before Wikipedia existed; their online text on Berneker has remained nearly unchanged since 2014 - the page was saved on Archive.org immediately after the WP page was created). Since 2014 only one sentence, on Berneker's editorship of "Archiv...", has been added to Hrv. enc. – which is also the only sentence that is missing from the WP article. — Phazd (talk|contribs) 03:51, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think those type of links make any sense, as the table below is sortable, so the "A"s could be anywhere after sorting on the second column. As far as I can tell from the history, that set of links have never worked. Should be removed IMO. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:02, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to resolve an alignment error in a collapsed infobox section, wherein the attributes added to each collapsed section all appear shifted to the right. (Note that the example shown is significantly condensed). I'm curious as to what I'm doing wrong or if it's an existing issue, as I've seen it occur on other articles using the template. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 19:13, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Krisgabwoosh Looks fine to me (in a laptop Chrome browser), apart from contravening MOS:DONTHIDE. Each section in the box, including the collapsible ones, has a two-column table, with the left column containing the attribute headers (e.g. Preceded by), and the right column their values (e.g. José Tamayo). Each table is 100% wide and columns' widths are automatically determined by the browser to fit their content: the longer the longest attribute, the wider its column. How to edit the content of a current page

A couple of months ago, I tried to make some revisions on the "Transactional Analysis" page's content. However, wikipedia did not allow me to do this. The reason I wanted to make those revisions was that the content was not good enough, was not updated, did not even include the main and most important subjects about Transactional Analysis and there were also some incorrect contents. When somebody would search for Transactional Analysis to get an idea about what it is, the content he would see would not really reflect what it is about. First of all, I would like to say that I would do these revisions voluntarily. Of course, I am not an authority on this subject but I did a master in Transactional Analysis, I am a Transactional Analyst (psychotherapist) and also a member of the European Transactional Analysis Association. As the members of this association (we are not getting paid by the association, we are just volunteers) we only want that Transactional Analysis wikipedia page has a better and correct content. This is why I've been trying to make some edits on the page which hasn't worked yet. Maybe, I could not understand the way Wikipedia work. If this is the case, I would be happy to hear from you whether I would have any other options. I hope that with this message I could explain why I want to edit the content and that you can help me with this. If it is really not possible to edit the current content, can I create a new page with a totally new content about Transactional Analysis? Or do you have any other suggestions? What I want is just that people who are interested in Transactional Analysis get the correct and enough content when they search it on wikipedia. Many thanks in advance for your support. @BowlbyMaya, this account has only made three edits to that article, all in September of last year. You added some unsourced information and then did some strange things with references and the references section; your edits were reverted for being unsourced (and generally making a bit of a mess). The article has a talk page, Talk:Transactional analysis, where you can suggest and discuss improvements if you'd like. Please remember to cite reliable sources in support of any additions you wish to make. 57.140.16.1 (talk) 21:12, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
