== Editing a Deleted Page ==

Hi, is there a way I can edit a page I have already submitted and that has been deleted due to self-advertising? I took the information off of the site thinking that would be safe but understand that it needs to be much more informational and objective and was wondering if I could go back to that page to do so.

Revision as of 15:36, 22 June 2011

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    Request for Comment

Is there an RFC procedure when it comes to article mergers? Or do we just wait and see if someone floats by and happens to find the articles suggested? Fly by Night (talk) 01:24, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can inform the WikiProject(s) the article falls under in their discussion pages.-- ObsidinSoul 05:29, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
See Help:Merging#Proposing a merger which explains how to propose a merge, and you are encouraged to discuss (or RFC) on the article talk page. There is a backlog list that some of us work through to specifically cleanup these merge requests. Tiggerjay (talk) 05:01, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, when I clicked from the initial Wikipedia page to go to this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiknic, a horrible image came up with swastikas, people being cut up, poop forced into their mouths, mutilation, etc. It was all really horrible... I think it said 'Enjoy some pain courtesy of Wiknik' The first time I saw it I hit the back button. Went to it again by clicking on the same Wiknik link, and eventually figured out how to click on some of the info behind it (of the real Wikipedia Wiknik webpage?) and then it disappeared. It was really a horrible page to see instead of what I thought I was going to. I am just letting you know in case there may be some hacking going on on Wikipedia that caused that. This link was up at the top of the page and appeared to be some sort of advertisement of the event. I was using a Mac when this awful image came up. Tried going to en.wikipedia.org using another computer I have, a PC, and didn't get it. But I had been clicking around on various Wikipedia articles on my Mac for about a half hour, so who knows how it got set up to appear suddenly like that? But the past few times I have clicked on the Wiknik link, it hasn't appeared again. Thanks, just hoping you can help anyone else avoid having to see it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.10.174.138 (talk) 03:00, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There was no hacking. A transcluded template was vandalized for two minutes. The vandal has been blocked indefinitely and the template protected from editing by new users. Vandalism is an unfortunate consequence of deliberately allowing anybody to edit most Wikipedia pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:34, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thankfully though, vandalism is usually spotted and dealt with in a matter of minutes. Sometimes, seconds. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 06:10, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, sounds really horrible. I am sincerely sorry for such a horrible image on this site, but unfortuneately, Wikipedia has to deal with such things daily, sometimes and usually consisting of major blocking and blockage of numerous IP adresses, Wikipedia accounts, and seldomly, but still possible, Wikipedia administrators and bureaucrats, sometimes causing collateral damage, and also long-term and indefinite blocking, due to Wikipedia being a site that can be edited by virtually anyone who owns or is in possesion of a computer. Despite these awful images, I hope you might be attending a Wiknik near you, I hope? Again I thank you for reporting such an awful thing to us. That's what the Internet does to people sometimes. Thank you all who have been helping this poor fellow in this awful situation.

Thanks for the info, and glad it was stopped so fast. Sounds like you guys are doing a good job... Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.10.174.138 (talk) 16:51, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Translation

    Resolved

Hi there, I am a new subscriber for your site. Lastday when I was searching for some information on your site i found your site really great. Also I found my searching topics in English but when I wanted to have that information in my own language(dari-Afghanistan)there was not. Actually i found my search in my own language as well but coparatively short. So, I started thinking to translate the articles and information on your website volunteerly and wanted to ask you the possiblity of publishing them once I finish the translation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hosainhirzi (talkcontribs) 05:57, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can publish stuff from Wikipedia so long as you give proper attribution if I rememebr correctly. This isn't a spot to contact Wikipedia btw, all you will get are other editors. =p I think this is the wiki for Dari [1]. You are more than welcome to translate articles so as to add to the body of knowledge there. No permission is required. . Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 06:06, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
†Whoops, or maybe that is Farsi Wikipedia. They both have the same language code. :| Pardon my ignorance, but is there much difference between the two? Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 06:09, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is no difference between them, the only different between them is the names. persian is a general name for languages are spoken in Afghanistan, Iran and Tajikistan with different dialects. But when you want to specify the languages in those countries for Afghanistan we use Dari. Thanks for the info you had given me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hosainhirzi (talkcontribs) 07:04, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see now, that explains the language codes being the same. You are very welcome sir. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 07:08, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
@Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie, I do not mean any offense to anyone, but the comment† that you posted here is slightly on the racist side. Remember, Wikipedia strives to create a neutral community for all users and Wikipedia. Just to let you know, this is NOT a block warning. This is only a slight reminder that all comments on Wikipedia should remain neutral and not turned toward ANY point of view. Thank you for reading, and again, this is only a slight reminder to not only you, but all Wikipedians and users out there. Thank you!

I beg your pardon? What exactly was racist? The statement that they have the same language code is factually correct. If you actually read the article on Dari, you will see the name for it is "Court Persian", and that the article is called "Dari (Persian)", and that both Dari and Persian do indeed have the same language code. Please review WP:NPA#WHATIS, as your accusation of racism could constitute a personal attack given the fact that it is baseless. Status hyphens and dashes?

Some questions related to hyphens and dashes:

    -- SchreyP (talk) 06:19, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

July 16 or June 16? There is an all-out war over it that has been going on for quite some time. It's gotten embarassingly heated at times. I don't know any more on the subject though. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 06:30, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oeps, you are right. It is July 16! One month too early to ask for the conclusion. It is going on that long, that I mixed this dates up. I'm sorry.
But my other question still holds. Does the moratorium include template title changes?

Remove all images on prophet Muhammad PBUH .

The below link is a biography or prophet Muhammad PBUH .

    Prophet Muhammad PBUM [2]

the images portraying him are false and prohibited .

i request the Wikipedia management to remove all those images .

Regards, Adil — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.147.191.80 (talk) 06:36, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Salaam, I'm afraid this has been discussed before, and it was decided that even though it is understandably offensive to followers of the Prophet Mohammad PBOHN, the images cannot be removed as per WP:NOTCENSORED. I hope you will understand this is not meant to disrespect Sha'ria law or Islam, but it is the policy here that content be included regardless of whether it is offensive to any beliefs. Peace be with you. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 06:40, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There's more at Talk:Muhammad/FAQ, including some technical ways to make these pictures disappear when you view the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:33, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, here is a question. If someone puts that image up or another one banned by the intended user's faith, with image tags on a talk page or usertalk, and it is clearly for the purpose of offending or trying to get a rise out of that user, is that covered under WP:CIVIL or some other behaviour policy? Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 08:46, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
From WP:CIVIL, "editors should always treat each other with consideration and respect". So, yes. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:51, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, those images are NOT clearly intended to offend. The Mark of the Beast (talk) 04:37, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On a similar fork, I was wondering, since this has come up before both about this topic and some nude photography, that it might be useful to have a specific tag at the top of each page discussing that it may contain objectionable content to some viewers and a link to how to block such content. Tiggerjay (talk) 04:46, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're not the first person to suggest that. It is literally the first thing listed at Wikipedia:Perennial proposals. It's not going to happen, since Wikipedia editors are not mind-readers, and cannot forsee what is going to offend everyone before they read it. Wikipedia is not salacious or gratuitous in its use of images, images are appropriate to the article they are in. I would expect to find pictures of the Prophet Muhammad in the article about him; I would expect to find pictures of naked people in the article nudity, etc. etc. There's no naked pictures in articles about Mickey Mouse or Queen Victoria or Chemistry. If you click on the article breast, you probably shouldn't be particularly shocked to see images of breasts. --Jayron32 04:58, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    FA Topicon

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask interwiki stuff, but here goes: I want to import the FA Topicon ({{Featured article}}) to Sanskrit Wikipedia. Normally, for other templates, I do the usual copy-paste job, but for some reason, a direct copy paste doesn't seem to be working. Any help would be appreciated. Lynch7 14:37, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Former Miss Gay Texas winners

I am Jodie lane , the first Miss Gay Texas in 1973, crowned in Houston by Norma Christi, I wondered why I and the former winners are not in your article? I am still in Dallas, and am semi retired... Jodie lane alis Joe Strickland — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.237.229.39 (talk) 17:10, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid that would require a source. Could you possibly link one? Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 17:29, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Which article are you referring to? If it is Drag pageantry then it contains a list of Miss Gay America but lists of all Miss Gay in each US state sounds excessive. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:38, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Articles

I would like to see each article have a creation date. Since technology evolves quickly, some articles are out of date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.172.93.224 (talk) 18:01, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some articles are edited every day so the creation day may not mean much. Click the "View history" tab on an article. If there is a link at the bottom saying "earliest" then click it. The page creation should now be visible at the bottom of the page in a line where "prev" is black and does not contain a link. See more at Help:Page history. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:31, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Every page has a last modified timestamp at the bottom. That is perhaps a more relevant indication of its up-to-date-ness than the date of its first version. —teb728 t c 20:01, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Haggis Hurling

At the recent Milngavie and Bearsden Highland games, we believe the current reported world record for haggis hurling was beaten by over 34 feet. Lorne Coltart if Blair Atholl threw the haggis a massive 214 feet 9 inches. How can we post this as beaten world record? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.241.137.67 (talk) 19:42, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this event was recorded by media (or other reliable sources), you can mention this in the article Haggis hurling. However, you must provide a reliable source. Original research (i.e. 'word of mouth' or 'personal experience') is not acceptable as it does not comply with Wikipedia's policies on verifiability.-- ObsidinSoul 21:29, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

moving new short article to article space

    Resolved

I wrote a new stub at User:Cloveapple/John_Pham. I tried to create it in article space first but didn't see how. It said an article by that name had been deleted a few times. I'm guessing that other article was about a different John Pham? Or else he didn't have notability yet? The article is referenced so it should be ok. Do I just ask an admin to move it? Cloveapple (talk) 00:11, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked the deleted versions of John Pham and the deleted articles (plural) were about two different John Phams, not your comic creator. I'll move it for you and add a couple of categories to get you going. BencherliteTalk 00:15, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you Cloveapple (talk) 00:20, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    phonetics

only the phonetically educated know hoe to read them. That's a small number of those who use this web site. Can you edit all articles to include English examples to help pronounce things?? For instance, rectitude, rek ti tood , thank you 108.64.24.253 (talk) 04:44, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:IPA for a description of how to pronounce each symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet with a corresponding common English word that has that sound. --Jayron32 04:51, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There's also the Wikipedia:Pronunciation respelling key (used in Template:Respell) which is present in some articles. It doesn't require specialist knowledge of phonetics (aside from knowing what a schwa sounds like). "Pronunciation" for example (IPA: /prəˌnʌnsiːˈeɪʃən/) is rendered as prə-NUN-see-AY-shən.
However, we can't really "edit all articles" as easily as that. If you know how to add them, you can help.-- ObsidinSoul 05:31, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
108, you can also hover the cursor over each IPA symbol to get an alt-text box showing you how to pronounce it. You'll find that the IPA is incredibly easy to pick up. Brammers (talk/c) 15:25, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    How to customize username?

How do I customize my username (signature) in discussions permanently? Thanks. Wikifan12345 (talk) 09:17, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can change it via your preferences. See Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing your signature. Wikipedia signatures are limited to 255 characters, but they can use WikiMarkup and HTML coding, the same as normal text in articles. Please stick to the usual guidelines regarding signatures (i.e. within reason) - not too long, not disruptive, must not contain images, must not impersonate another user, must not deviate too much (if at all) from your actual username, and must contain links to your user page or your user talk page.
You can find examples of custom signatures below. Edit them to see how they were done and copy it or customize it to your liking.
Additional instructions can also be found here: User:Smurrayinchester/Tutorial/Signature. -- ObsidinSoul 09:34, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I kind of figured it out. I wanted my talk link to say "Be nice" but it wouldn't work right. Thanks again. Wikifantalk 10:38, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, but I must remind you that images are not allowed in signatures. Reasoning here: Wikipedia:Signatures#Images.
As for a "Be nice" version, did you mean like this? - WikifanBe nice.
You can copy the following code of that version to your preferences or modify it: [[User:Wikifan12345|Wikifan]]<small>[[User_talk:Wikifan12345|Be nice]]</small> -- ObsidinSoul 11:47, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikifan probably got the idea of the flag from the example galleries. I notice that both galleries include flag images, and the first includes other images as well. —teb728 t c 12:06, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, images are not allowed? How come those signatures include images?? Wikifantalk 12:25, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. Those pages were made way before my time. Probably made during the 'heyday' of signatures when policies affecting them today were not in effect. I just linked them as examples, as they featured the most variety of things you can do with your sig (unlike the 'official' entry on custom signatures). Both of them do link to the policy pages on signatures though. Wikifan, if it's any consolation, special characters and fonts are allowed. The spade symbol in my sig is a special char.-- ObsidinSoul 12:54, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All right makes sense. Thanks for the clarity. How might I change the color of my username? The "how to" is rather confusing. WikifanBe nice 22:13, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Use the <span> tag.
    [[User:Wikifan12345|<span style="color:#97BB15">Wikifan</span>]]<small>[[User_talk:Wikifan12345|Be nice]]</small>
    Will give you: WikifanBe nice
    [[User:Wikifan12345|<span style="color:RED">Wikifan</span>]]<small>[[User_talk:Wikifan12345|Be nice]]</small>
    Will give you: WikifanBe nice
Html color codes can be found here. I strongly suggest you experiment in your own talk page. Easiest way to learn and to preview how your codes and sig looks like on a page. You can always blank it again when you're done.-- ObsidinSoul 22:57, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I think I figured it out. To change the color of my talk (Be Nice) I just do the <span style="color:#whatever number">benice</span>]]</span>. You have to look at the edit of this page to see what I wrote it won't show up here. WikifanBe nice 00:27, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, just like that. Oh and to make code show up in Wikipedia without having to hit the edit button just use Template:Nowiki. I have added it. An example in red and green (WikifanBe nice) would have the following code:
    • [[User:Wikifan12345|<span style="color:RED">Wikifan</span>]]<small>[[User_talk:Wikifan12345|<span style="color:GREEN">Be nice</span>]]</small>
Note the placement of the closing </span> tags.-- ObsidinSoul 08:14, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Good practices says: "Use English: No matter to whom you address a comment, it is preferred that you use English on English Wikipedia talk pages. This is so that comments may be comprehensible to the community at large." (emphasis theirs) An edit summary is a comment to the community at large. Well, consider that we walk a line between trying to do the finest possible work and encouraging others to help to whatever degree possible, given their own skills, experience, and time. We don't require ISBN numbers, but it's a good idea, in my opinion, as that's one standard way of locating a work, and anytime anyone takes the time to flesh out a citation fully, that's a good thing. --Nuujinn (talk) 00:22, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Div tags vs. {{clear}}

Is there any reason to have three pairs of div tags at Añjali Mudrā? It seems to me that they could easily be replaced with {{clear}}, but I'm not familiar enough with the coding to do this myself. Nyttend (talk) 00:50, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    • The first div clears the table of contents before the first section without clearing the first image. It is equivalent to {{clearleft}} not {{clear}}. It is necessary because of the {{TOCleft}}, inserted apparently to make the TOC overlap the lead section. IMO both the TOCleft and the div should be removed.
    • The second div defeats the none parameter on the second image. (The none parameter prevents the image from overlapping the following text, and the div enables the overlap.) It is almost equivalent to {{clearleft}} not {{clear}}. IMO both the div and none parameter should be removed.
    • The third div clears the second image before the next section. It is equivalent to {{clear}}. The second image was placed on the left apparently because it has a different width than the first. Clearing would not be necessary if the second image were placed on the right. —teb728 t c 04:41, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I boldly did what I talked about on the first two and changed the third to {{clear}}. —teb728 t c 08:37, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Replacing an image with TeX

Black hole#Entropy and thermodynamics has a goofy-looking image (File:Black Hole Entropy.png) showing an equation in the Papyrus typeface with the characters comically misaligned. It seems to me that it would be be better to replace this image with a simple TeX rendering of the equation:

Is there a way to use an equation like this as an image, i.e., to put it in a box floated to the right with a caption? —Bkell (talk) 03:00, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You could use a simple screen capture of the equation, crop it, save it as an image file, and upload it. --Jayron32 03:17, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I thought about that, but there are many advantages to using a real equation in the Wikicode rather than an image: it's easier to edit, the software knows it's an equation and applies appropriate styles, the associated alt text is automatically generated, future improvements to math display would apply, etc. —Bkell (talk) 03:25, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The formula for the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy (S) of a black hole. It depends on the area of the black hole (A), the speed of light (c), the Boltzmann constant (k), Newton's constant (G), and the reduced Planck constant (ħ).
It's easy to float any arbitrary thing to the right. That means you can use the real equation. Obviously you'd want to play with spacing and borders to make it pretty.

For thumb-images, I think plain-text (as TeX tends to render this equation) looks poor (relatively small characters with wide line-spacing), so you might want to force the wiki software to render it as a png on-the-fly. You could even dump the HTML of the page as it stands now and steal its exact <div> specs for the layout. DMacks (talk) 03:49, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If there's a way to render the TeX larger using the code then that's superior as you say, but I threw together this image in Gimp. Use it or not, as you see fit.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged Kopeius for speedy deletion on the grounds of lack of assertion of notability and also its promotional tone. I also don't think that an account called "Outputlive" should be writing articles about artists promoted by "OUTPUTLIVELIMITED", so a read of our rules on conflict of interest and usernames, as well as advertising, would be advisable. BencherliteTalk 11:59, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your account name is a problem. If you want to edit Wikipedia for something other than promoting Output Live and its clients, you should create a new account representing you personally. —teb728 t c 12:36, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's quite a lot of links people have thrown at you, plus a not-very-friendly-looking block on your user name, so I will try to summarise the information for you:
    • Normally, anything that has been published on a website or anywhere is else is copyright, and cannot be used in Wikipedia.
    • If you published it, or own the copyright for another reason, and you choose to license it in a way consistent with Wikipedia's requirements, you can follow the procedure in WP:IOWN, and then reuse the text on Wikipedia.
    • However, the text on an official or promotional website is rarely appropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia because it is usually not neutral in tone, and may in fact be promotional.
    • Furthermore, because you are the promoter of publisher of the subject of an article, you have a conflict of interest which is likely to make it difficult for you to write in a neutral way even if you wanted to. You are not barred from doing, so, but you are strongly discouraged; but you may still contribute information about the subject on the article's talk page (if there is an article).
    • Wikipedia articles must demonstrated that their subjects are notable by Wikipedia's criteria: this is not the same as important or famous: it is that other people have written about them. If an article cannot demonstrate this notability, it is likely to be deleted (and the criteria are more strongly applied for articles about living people).
    • Finally, as a separate issue, the username you have chosen appears to contravene Wikipedia's username policy, as it appears to be promotional. It has therefore been blocked (it has, you have not).
You are very welcome to stay and help us improve Wikipedia, but you need to take note of these points. --ColinFine (talk) 19:13, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Information on location of military bases

I apologise at the outset if I'm using this method of communication in error. My only excuse is that whilst I've used Wikipaedia military information pages quite extensively in the recent past I've only just opened an account in hopes of contributing some information myself in return. I share a passion for both maps and military history. In particular my last project concerned mapping the Israeli Defence Forces Orders of Battle. I noted that on several of the existing IDF related major unit pages the information already given on their base location was insufficient, inaccurate, misleading or simply non-existent.(For example the Nahal Brigade HQ was said to be based near the Palestinian town of Bayt Lid in Samaria (at least that's where the link took one) instead of at Camp Mota Gur in the Sharon near to 'Beit Lid Junction' - Is there a policy on this ? If so I'd be most grateful if you'd direct me to it so that I don't tread on any toes etc.. Yours in trepidation — Preceding unsigned comment added by John Eight Thirty-two (talkcontribs) 11:57, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Use the best sources you can find. If you know a particular source (even if it is an official IDF website) is unreliable, just don't use it. See WP:RS Newspapers are often more accurate and up-to-date than government burocracies. Google Earth is also generally very accurate. Roger (talk) 12:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be a bug bear but I take it this comment means that improving accuracy on location of the bases for military units already appearing in existing pages is acceptable, so long that accurate sources should be cited? in particular let me make it clear that where I've added earth co-ordinates, I've always checked them out first on Google Earth, as I take it is your suggestion. In that case I'll proceed to makes small improvements until told otherwise ? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by John Eight Thirty-two (talkcontribs) 15:50, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely. Except that the criterion for Wikipedia is verifiability not truth, so do not use an unreliable source simply because you believe it to be correct - especially if it contradicts a generally reliable source.
And one more point: if you want to make a change which you think might be at all controversial, I recommend you discuss it on the article's talk page first. --ColinFine (talk) 19:17, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the cells' contents appear to contain unbreakable strings that are wider than their column, which causes the cells to widen to accomodate. That might not be the only problem, but definitely contributes. For example, hiding the bare URL in column 2 row 1 helps. More importantly, why are you trying to force table dimensions? I tried without them and various browsers' autolayout worked fine for multiple screen-sizes whereas forced width will either waste space or cause side-scrolling. DMacks (talk) 15:09, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mr. Raper. The article creation wizard which will guide you step by step though the process of creating an article can be found at Wikipedia:Article wizard. I would recommend that as the easiest way.
I would however like to note a few things though: (1) you sound as if you are planning on creating an article about something you are involved with personally, which is strongly discouraged. While there are many venues for press releases and self publishing Wikipedia is not one, we seek to write objectively here and that is very, very difficult to do if an author has a conflict of interest (2) in the same vein as note 1, when people try to create a page on Wikipedia about something they are involved with we often find the subject does not meet Wikipedia's idea of notability; a subject must be very important (3) paid editing is highly discouraged (because of conflict of interest reasons), Wikipedia is volunteer so no need to pay anyways!
How about this Mr. Raper, you tell us the topic you were thinking of writing an article on and if it appears to meet the Wiki notability standard I will start an article for you. jorgenev 15:09, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Paying an editor almost always puts the paid user at a very severe conflict of interest with Wikipedia. Something strongly discouraged. A subject should be in Wikipedia by merit of its own notability. You can not control articles, nor can you force a subject to be in Wikipedia by providing incentives for editors to include it. If it violates policies it will be removed, regardless of how much you paid an editor for it. And a far more important thing: Wikipedia is not for public relations, neither is it for advertising or promotion.
Paying an editor is also highly unethical, as it is an attempt to circumvent Wikipedia's guidelines and insults the volunteer spirit of the Wikipedian community. As Wikipedia's records are completely open to the public, this can have consequences on the subject of the article and can result in public embarrassment for the parties involved.
I suggest you take up Jorgenev's offer. But take note that you can not dictate the contents of an article. It will always depend on the information other reliable sources have published about it, whether the information is good or bad. And if the subject is not notable, it just can not be included, period. To determine if your subject meets the notability criteria, please see WP:Notability -- ObsidinSoul 15:40, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Articles for Deletion

Is there a way to contest an AfD if it appears that the closing admin has ignored consensus? In a recent AfD there were three (policy supported) !votes to keep, and two (policy supported) !votes to delete. That indicated no consensus, or a keep consensus. However the closing admin deleted the article. What's point of having an AfD when the views of those involved are ignored? Fly by Night (talk) 16:48, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, you're going to have to just watchlist the main page, and/or check in every so often to see what new comments have been posted. You can only watchlist whole pages, not sections, and as you note TFD does not use a transclusion system like AFD does. --Jayron32 17:59, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your username is also problematic (see WP:ORGNAME). You should choose a username that represents you as an individual rather than as a representative of your party. Generally you shouldn't do this (see WP:USERBIO). If you want to write something for mainspace, you need to provide evidence of coverage by third party sources. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 19:22, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, in general a person only merits a Wikipedia article when there already exists a large quantity of scholarship about them. If there is no existing scholarship already published (see WP:RS, stuff like books, magazine articles, etc.), and lots of it, then a person simply doesn't meet the minimum standards at Wikipedia for an article here. See also WP:N and WP:BIO. If the only source of reliable info is a personal letter written by the subject, they simply don't merit an article. --Jayron32 19:28, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's an unfortunate cached version of the page that got saved before the vandalism was detected and removed. However, as Wikipedia is among the top ranking sites in Google Search, it will be updated quite soon enough. It can take from a few hours to a few days, more likely the former. Try checking Google Search again tomorrow. Note that this issue is from Google and beyond the means of anyone here to fix. The actual wiki entry has already been fixed.

The reason why I am inquiring as to how to accomplish this on someone else's page is because I understand that it is against your policy to link a site that we own, maintain or represent (If I misunderstood and we can in fact create our own article and provide links to our technical supporting data please advise). Should I initiate a discussion with the page owner/editor asking permission? How does this process work? Do you have a reliable source? Same-sex marriage in Nepal doesn't say so. Timeline of same-sex marriage contains {{SSM}}. This code transcludes a template. Template:SSM redirects to Template:Same-sex unions which is semi-protected so it can only be edited by autoconfirmed users. You can post a suggestion to Template talk:Same-sex unions. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:53, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Go to the bottom of the table (where it says LGBT portal) and find the “e”. Click it and you can edit. As said above, you need a source, and you need to learn table formatting.
plus Nepal has been added. Thanks for telling us. Also, in Article:Nepal, Sections 3.1 and 5 (Neotectonics and Subdivisions, respectively) need fixing (pictures, some kind of wrap problem)

    Electric Ink

For some time Electric Ink has been shown as a BBC programme when it is in actual fact the company name of a graphic design company started many many years before the BBC even conceived their programme. If you make legal threats, you are not permitted to edit Wikipedia. If previous edits have been reverted, it is probably because no references were given to support the assertion being made. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:04, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you are talking about a different entity from that covered by the existing article, it would need a separate article, but you must not write it, as this would be a breach of WP:COI. I have no idea what the Electric Ink is that you refer to as the "real" Electric Ink. Both your EI and the BBC programme are as "real" as anything else. If, for lack of a better description, your Electric Ink is notable then it could go in an article titled Electric Ink (company) or Electric Ink (tattoo parlor) or some such title. But like I said, it must be notable first. See Wikipedia:Notability for more on that. Dismas|(talk) 08:41, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.Oxy.2354 (talk) 09:42, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, is there an admin who could simply rollback to before my first edit from today? The article is a mess, now. Thank you, P.Oxy.2354 (talk) 09:47, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't need an admin; I have done it for you. Perhaps you accidentally hit "Edit" at the top while looking at an old revision of the page? That would discard all the edits made since that revision. See Help:Revert#Manual reverting. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:56, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for the help and info! P.Oxy.2354 (talk) 09:58, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Farinomalein - a natural maleimide with formula C10H13NO4 - was first isolated from the entomopathogenic fungus Isaria farinosa (Paecilomyces farinosus) - source H599 (Japan)[1].

    Potential as a Biological Insecticide

Farinomalein has shown potent and selective inhibition (0.15-5 μg/disk) against eight isolates of plant pathogenic Phytophthora sojae (P. Putri et. al.). These results suggest that farinomalein might be useful as a candidate pesticide for the treatment of Phytophthora stem rot in soybean.

    Material Synthesis

A simple two-stage synthesis from the γ-hydroxybutenolide compound, 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-5(H)-furanone, has been reported[2]. Firstly, 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-5(H)-furanone is oxidised to 3-isopropylfuran-2,5-dione by Dess–Martin periodinane, followed by acetic acid reflux with beta-alanine. The white powdered product has a melting point of 75-77°C.

I don't think it was submitted anywhere. I have copied it to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Farinomalein, so that it is now in the review queue. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.8 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.--Orange Mike | Talk 14:34, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Inline citations

I would like to know how to do inline citations, so that people can click a numberical subscript and this takes them immediately to an external link. Any advice would be most welcome, and you are welcome to leave a message on my userpage. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 15:26, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some other suggestions which could be useful: Wikipedia:Citation templates, Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners and Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners with citation templates. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:48, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you or this - I keep on trying the referencing tag which is implicit on one of these pages of Wikipedia, but keep on getting "Citation missing - go to helpage". What am I doing wrong? All advice will be appreciated. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 20:40, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, external links in the body of an article such as you describe are to be eliminated; there is no place for them in our model of referencing. They should either be references, or external links at the end of the article. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:59, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using <ref>[http://www.google.com]</ref> will produce[1]. You then need to add {{Reflist}} in a section named 'References' like in the following example:

    ==References==
    {{Reflist}}

To give the link a better name rather than 1 you can use something like <ref>[http://www.google.com Google Main Page]</ref>

    See also Wikipedia:Citing sources. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 21:08, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you every one for all your help, especially Toshi Yamaguchi - at last, I seem to be getting somewhere! This is exciting - after editing Wikipedia for many years, at long last I might be learning inline citations! ACEOREVIVED (talk) 14:30, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Instant deleting

If I see a section of an article that looks bias, inapropriate or too opinionated is it ok to just delete or do I need to go to the discussion page about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.130.18.108 (talk) 19:50, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can delete it, but be sure to explain in your edit summary why you did so, citing the policy in question, such as "non-neutral point of view", "irrelevant to this article", "unsourced attack" or whatever; and assume good faith on the part of the person who put it in. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:55, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mike is exactly right, you can do it and an edit summary is strongly encouraged, otherwise, someone may assume it is vandalism, revert and warn you. I prefer to go a little further, and post a notice on the talk page that I intended to make some change, just to give people a chance to respond. It may be that there has been a long discussion, and this is consensus wording, or perhaps there is an ongoing discussion, and people are working out wording , in which case just deleting it may be a bit disruptive. --SPhilbrickT 21:41, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Amount of Non-free image per article

Where is the guidelines that dictate how many non-free images can be used on an article? I really need them in regards to the Bugs Bunny article dispute. Sarujo (talk) 22:10, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The policy is at WP:NFCC. There is no limit, but per #8 each must significantly increase reader understanding, and per #3 multiple images can't be used if one will serve the purpose. —teb728 t c 23:11, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How would this help with the situation on the Bugs Bunny article? They are insisting on including this one on the claim that they feel it's crucial to illustrate his appearance on The Looney Tunes Show. Personally I don't see how that design is that far removed from the design we all know so well. Sarujo (talk) 23:20, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If the purpose is to show how Bugs Bunny looks, it would fail NFCC#3, for there are other images that do that. If it is (as appears to be the case) to decorate a mention of the 2011 show, it would fail NFCC#8. If it were to significantly increase reader understanding of sourced commentary on, for example, how the current appearance differs from the classical, then it would be acceptable. —teb728 t c 23:54, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's the thing the image doesn't reflect the actual design in the actual show, as seen in this screenshot. As you can see, there not any real difference. But you're right this is a fail of criteria. Sarujo (talk) 00:06, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Moving other people's comments

What's our policy on moving other people's talk page comments? If I write a message on someone's user talk page and they delete it, and then repost it on an article's talk page, is that okay? I know that we can link to comments, and I know that deleting posts from one's talk page acknowledges that you've read the comment; but what about moving other people's comments onto other pages without asking them? Is there a policy on that? Fly by Night (talk) 03:06, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A few diffs would be nice so we can comment on your specific problem. --Jayron32 03:07, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Even without diffs, in short Wikipedia states that you can do whatever you want with the comments on your own talk page. I am not aware of any policy stating that you cannot move a comment from a user talk page to a talk page of another page. Ryan Vesey (talk) 03:11, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you were trying to discuss article content on his talk page, and he didn't want to discuss it privately, it was a good thing thing for him to do: (except for WP:BRD discussions) discussion of article content normally belongs on the article talk page so that all editors can be a party to it. —teb728 t c 04:04, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Move article

Will somebody please move the article A. P. Moller-Maersk Group to "A.P. Moller - Maersk Group"? The reason for moving the article is that the correct name of the company is "A.P. Moller - Maersk Group". I am having some problems about moving the article myself. --ANCJensen (talk) 03:56, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please, remove the interval between "A." and "P." --ANCJensen (talk) 04:10, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the article instead to Maersk, per our policy on titling articles by the common name used in reliable English language sources to refer to the topic. In this case, a Google Books search shows Maersk to be the common name by a truly vast margin.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:37, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Did you search on the website www.books.google.com on "Maersk" and afterwards on "A.P. Moller – Maersk Group", or...? --ANCJensen (talk) 04:44, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I searched <"A.P Moller" "Maersk Group"> (374 hits) vs. <Maersk> (65,500 hits) and then scrolled through the first few pages of the latter search to make sure it wasn't picking up a lot of false positives.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:55, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Watchlist troubles

How come is FuckKorea, a page that has never existed, in my watchlist? I have also noticed that Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language sometimes (about 2 or 3 times so far) disappears from my watchlist, and I certainly haven't ever removed it from there. (This refdesk is the page that I open most often, and I would usually read it while logged out; I usually only log in when I wish to make an edit to a page). Is there a reason for me to worry that my account may have been compromised? --Theurgist (talk) 04:41, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Ref Desks often vanish from my watchlist because the last edit was made by a bot and I have bot edits hidden. This may be similar to why they don't show for you as well. Dismas|(talk) 04:48, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No no. This desk disappears from the list, as if I have chosen to stop watching it. Besides, I don't have bot edits hidden and always see them. --Theurgist (talk) 04:57, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Either the article did exist at one time, was deleted and then the entry in the logs removed by oversighting, or someone added it to your watchlist. If it wasn't you, could someone have used your account while you were logged in but away from the computer? I would suggest changing your password and checking your contributions for anything dodgy - I'll look at your deleted contributions in a few hours when I'm at home and can log into my main, admin, account, if you want me to. -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 05:20, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would be grateful if you do it, because the edit counter says I have made 3 deleted edits. I remember 2 of them: one was a comment on the talk page of a file last summer (the file must have been deleted later), and the other was when I placed a template on a redirect page to request its deletion so an uncontroversial move could be performed. I can't think of a third deleted edit right now, but I might, of course, be forgetting something. --Theurgist (talk) 05:47, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The third was Category:2011–12 in European football (soccer) navigational boxes, which you created and which was deleted because it was empty. Regarding the phantom page, what often happens is that a page that is on your watchlist is the target of move vandalism, the move is then undone, but the page that it was moved to becomes part of your watchlist. Here, as above, there must have been oversighting. I highly doubt someone hijacked your account and then all they did was edit your watchlist to add a random false title (very few people even know titles can be manually added). But as above, go change your password and make sure it's a strong one.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:28, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not able to listen to .mid files. I just see the link to the file and by clicking on it I come to the file page. There I see an icon and inside a note. Is it just me? Should I download a special software? Thank you.--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫Share–a–Power[citation needed] 11:05, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    File:Example.mid
If I double-click on the "note" icon I jump to yet another screen where the audio starts to play. That's with Windows Vista and Firefox 3.6.15. Any joy? -- John of Reading (talk) 11:49, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to clean up a specific article

I try to clean up List of conglomerates. The article contains a large amount of entries without any verification, that the company in question actually is a conglomerate. I already provided sources for some of the entries and moved them to a separate section: 'Current conglomerates'. I tagged all unreferenced entries in the article with a citation needed tag. Now my question is how should I proceed with this article? It seems unreferenced new entries are being added faster than I am able to verify the existing ones. Should I simply remove all unreferenced entries? Is there a good place where I could request help with referencing or cleaning up this article? Any help is appreciated. The talk page mentions criteria at Talk:List_of_conglomerates#Sources. Discussion would sensibly start there. You might also consider discussion at WT:COMPANIES. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:26, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think what is proposed at Talk:List_of_conglomerates#Sources is an acceptable solution, since this article is not a disambiguation page and therefore requires references for verification.
I already posted a question at WT:COMPANIES#Conglomerates and it took over a month to receive a reply. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 12:39, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Logo Removal

I was trying to edit the UNDP page to remove the UN logo and replace the updated UNDP one. I've managed to put the updated UNDP logo into the info box but cannot remove the incorrect logo.

United Nations Development Programme This is the source code from the page source that needs to be deleted. However, it doesn't show up in the wiki edits page code. Can someone please delete it for me or tell me how to do it? Thanks!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hqny (talkcontribs) 14:46, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

You are getting this problem because the MediaWiki software only recognises some HTML. To display the image, place [[File:Small_Flag_of_the_United_Nations_ZP.svg|60px]]. For info on other wikicode, visit Wikipedia:Cheatsheet. Island Monkey talk the talk 14:51, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Was this racist?

So there was something earlier on this page, and I'm not sure where else to ask, but was this Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2011_June_18#Translation comment I made racist in anyone else's eyes? Look at the latter bit of the convo and where the fellow placed the cross/dagger. Am I not seeing something here? Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 15:32, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing a Deleted Page

Hi, is there a way I can edit a page I have already submitted and that has been deleted due to self-advertising? I took the information off of the site thinking that would be safe but understand that it needs to be much more informational and objective and was wondering if I could go back to that page to do so.
