:The question "Is loss of appetite a symptom of amoebiasis?" was not a request for medical advice or a diagnosis, but a request for information. Our article [[Amoebiasis]] should help answer that question. [[User:DuncanHill|DuncanHill]] ([[User talk:DuncanHill|talk]]) 12:27, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Why are the tables (specific columns: Inches and Centimeters) at List of reptiles of Minnesota, under the "Snakes" header, sorting improperly? Albacore (talk) 01:08, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it goes by the digits listed. Ergo, to sort it properly, all columns need equal digits - which means some columns need leading digits. I added these in this edit, which now makes it sort correctly, however it is a little unsightly. I believe there is a more elegant fix, however I can't remember it at the moment. Avicennasis @ 03:09, 22 Tamuz 5771 / 24 July 2011 (UTC)
The other possibility is that it doesn't see the numbers as numbers, due to the hyphen - you could try separate columns for Min/Max length and just use numbers there (Which might allow proper sorting without a leading zero.) Avicennasis @ 03:17, 22 Tamuz 5771 / 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I have hidden the leading zeros with {{hs}}.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 03:28, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I want to start a section of pages on Crosman Air Guns and Airsoft Guns and I was wondering if there is a template for that and am also wondering how I would create a page.

The above sentence is long, but I need a good amount of information on how to do this. I have the knowledge and have improved a previous page to a degree : Crosman P9 Airsoft Pistol but do not know how to create a page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Turtletechy (talkcontribs) 03:31, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Starting with WP:Your first article is probably a good idea. Dismas|(talk) 03:33, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Articles are not appearing at Special:NewPages

My last two have not appeared at Special:NewPages. Even if you do this search, the articles are not found. The articles are HMS Doterel (1880) and Allen Morris (tennis). I created them both in my userspace draft, could that have anything to do with it? Should I bring them to requests for feedback? Ryan Vesey Review me! 03:49, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That'll do it. Both pages are in Special:NewPages for you, alright, albeit under Userspace. Avicennasis @ 05:55, 22 Tamuz 5771 / 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Ahh, is it supposed to be like that? I wish there was some way that will still get the pages sent to new pages. Ryan Vesey Review me! 09:45, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's an "undocumented feature"! I think it only shows up in New Pages if the page has never existed anywhere - if it was created as "x" and then moved to "y" then the "x" page is new, but the "y" page is not because it already existed, albeit at another location. As far as I am aware, there's no way round this without creating the new article through cut&paste rather than moving, and that causes history/attribution loss -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 09:56, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab)/Archive 4#New Page Patrol - moved from subpage / redirects for a recent discussion which could only refer to a feature request. If you are the only contributor then you are allowed to copy-paste. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:07, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The time of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash as reported in the biographie of Billy Powell.

In the Billy Powell biography the date of the fatal plane crash involving the Lynyrd Skynyrd band, the date of the crash is stated to be 3 days after the release of the album, in fact it was in August after the release of the Album, several months later. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.120.36.88 (talk) 04:11, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a source for that? Street Survivors says the album was released October 17, 1977, and Ronnie Van Zant and the bios of the other victims say they died October 20, 1977. —teb728 t c 05:47, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Numerous essentially indisputable reliable sources confirm the October 20, 1977 date of the crash (see e.g., [2], [3] and [4]) so the question is do you have a source for the release of the album showing it was a few months before? Note that this article says that the crash took place after the album had "just been released".--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:06, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Aha. This interview has Skynyrd's guitarist reporting in an interview on October 2, 1977 that Sole Survivors had not yet been released so, while this does not onfirm the "3 days after" information to a tee, your assertion is plainly incorrect.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:13, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Image not visible in infobox

    Resolved

For some reason, I am not able to view the image in the infobox in University of Lahore. This happens regardless of whether the image is png or jpg. Am I doing something wrong? Any help appreciated! Lynch7 14:08, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's been fixed. Infoboxes are unfortunately inconsistent in whether they need the full image syntax or just the image name. {{infobox university}} allows either, but they go in different parameters: |image= is for the full syntax, |image_name= for just the image name. So, you could have put |image_name=University of Lahore logo2.jpg. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:38, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks Lotje and Redrose64; I was indeed confused between image_name and image parameters. Lynch7 14:47, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    template for remember mediation

I want to inform in a talk page about mediations regarding an issue. This template shold not be archived in order to keep the information for other editors. Sometime I saw such a template. Do you know it?. --Keysanger (what?) 17:15, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Depending on what you mean exactly, it may be {{Mediated}}, {{Mediation request}}, or {{Mediation}}. These are designed for article talk pages or the articles themselves (or subsections of it). If you meant a user talk page, I suggest you simply tell them about it.-- Obsidin Soul 21:21, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am adding an external link to the website for the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame on the pages of all of the boxers that have been inducted. I got a warning about multiple external links being considered spam. Can I proceed? Should I only do a few at a time? what is the limit? Thanks! Im4bath (talk) 19:59, 24 July 2011 (UTC)im4bath[reply]

Hello. We will be able to help you better if you could specify which external links you are try to contribute and to what articles you plan to do so. That way we can confirm or deny your claim that your links are not spam. Happy editing, hajatvrc with WikiLove @ 20:23, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you wish to add this particular link? Your every contribution has been to add a link to this site to multiple articles, this would appear to be spamming. If you are using it as a source you should bring it up at our reliable sources noticeboard to determine if the source is a reliable source and usable. Rehevkor 20:31, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You should also bring this up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Boxing and start a discussion on whether this award/hall of fame is notable enough for inclusion, you should not be inserting these links without consensus. Rehevkor 20:36, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a special page to store private notes ?

Is there a special/ordinary page for user's personal use only like the one 'My watchlist'?? By saying "personal use", I mean to store some important notes for future use like to do list, future re-search plan etc. The user page is viewable to all it cant hold personal elements. Existing special pages like 'My watchlist' is not fully editable. Only the list can be edited. Theres no place to mark a page how much important is it for me or to make a footnote about the page. D!p 20:08, 24 July 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by D!p.computing (talkcontribs)

What you are describing is exactly what user pages are for. They cannot be made private, in the sense of others not being able to view them, but they they are generally "private", in the sense that others will not normally edit your user page except to remove improper material (e.g., a fair use image used outside the mainspace) or to revert vandalism by third-parties. You can also start subpages which are seen far less than even your userpage, though they are technically just as public. They have the advantage that you can research and write an article there at your leisure before moving it to the mainspace. If you really need a privately viewable document, then a text document of some sort stored on your hard drive is the place to keep it. You can always drop the text onto a Wikipedia page and hit preview to check if your formatting is working.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:29, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As you probably already realized, be careful what you place in your userpages. Do not place personally identifying or sensitive information unless you fully understand the consequences of doing so. See Wikipedia:Wikipedia is in the real world and Wikipedia:On privacy, confidentiality and discretion. And yes, like Fuhgettaboutit says, what you described are usually what user pages are for. Most users (including me) use userpages for frequently used templates, notes on articles they are working on or planning to work on, drafts, experiments on formatting, links to commonly used sources, and other useful things for editing (See Wikipedia:User pages). Even if you don't actually 'own' it, as long as you aren't breaking any rules, no one will usually touch it for etiquette reasons (See Wikipedia:Etiquette).
If you wanted something more private, however, I recommend you do it off-site or offline. Bookmarking the articles and jotting down notes in pen and paper or a text-editing program usually works just as well.-- Obsidin Soul 20:54, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can mark a page as "important for me", of course - with a note at the top, or use an {{mbox}} or something. But everyone will be able to see it, and edit it too.
That concept often seems odd to new users, but once you embrace the idea, it all kinda works. For example, I have User:Chzz/note which is just my own scratch-pad of reminders - anyone can see it; anyone could change it, but I'd probably just change it back.
Once you accept the 'openness', it's all rather nice, really.
For anything actually private though - it's best to just use a text note file on your own computer, or something like that; don't put private things on the wiki. And don't put your shopping list on either, or it'll get deleted as WP:NOTWEBHOST.  Chzz  ►  11:48, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think actual movies, so I will respond accordingly: I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. I have formated {{Time 100s}} using {{Navbox with collapsible groups}} but the liststyle parameter is not working for the background color, font color or spacing symbols.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 07:10, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is working, but only the "color:white;" part is effective, because the "background:red;" is overridden by the class="navbox-list navbox-even" or class="navbox-list navbox-odd" which are applied to the individual navbox rows. These force other background colours - white for odd rows, light grey for even rows.
    As a side issue, I don't think that the {{•wrap}} which appears in the |belowstyle= is a good idea - try a # instead. I have fixed a <font /> which should have been </font>. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:50, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you add | liststyle = background: Red;color:white; as an explicit parameter to the two calls to {{Navbox subgroup}}, you can override the class="navbox-list navbox-even" or class="navbox-list navbox-odd". This gives you white dots and blue text links against a red background. Don't do it, it looks hideous! -- John of Reading (talk) 13:00, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am not trying to change the background and text of the list but of the row headings. How do I do that?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 13:03, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As above, apply parameters to the {{navbox subgroup}}. The primary style for the |groupn= (where n is an integer in the range 1-20) comes from |groupstyle= - this supplements (and may override) |basestyle=. If special styling is desired for individual rows, |groupnstyle= may be used. For the |listn= the primary style comes from |liststyle=, which may be overridden for odd and even rows by the use of |oddstyle= and |evenstyle=, or for individual rows by |listnstyle=. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:22, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have tried list1style = background: Red;color:white; and group1style = background: Red;color:white; to get the row headings to have red backgrounds with white text and neither has worked. I am not sure what I am misunderstanding.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:51, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Did you ensure that the parameter was placed inside each relevant {{Navbox subgroup}}? If it's inside the {{Navbox with collapsible groups}} but outside the {{Navbox subgroup}}s it may not have the full intended effect. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:18, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are you trying to change the colour of the year-by-year links? They are red because they are links to articles that don't exist. I don't think that can be changed by setting navbox styles. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:25, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Finally got it.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 19:35, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A Wizard is available to walk you through these steps. See the Article Wizard.

    Thank you.

Before creating an article, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines with which all articles should comply. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
If you still think an article is appropriate, see Wikipedia:Your first article. You might also look at Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. You could add information yourself, as long as you have reliable sources for the info (e.g. books, newspapers) - but do be careful to reference everything - see WP:BLP.
For the facts you said above...how can we prove they're true? It'd need a very good reference; it has to be verifiable.
Alternatively, you could make suggestions on the discussion page, Talk:Ritu Beri.  Chzz  ►  11:53, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What is the correct way to format a link to items on Wikibooks, WikiSource, Commons, Wiktionary, etc.? Roger (talk) 12:21, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on what you want to do but in general, just like regualr links we have starting and ending doubled bracket. Inside you place the name of the other project (certain shortcuts can also be used), followed by a colon, then the exact title there, then a pipe ("|") followed by what you want the link to display as. So, for example, to link to Wiktionary's entry for callipygian, you would type [[wiktionary:callipygian|callipygian]] or [[wikt:callipygian|callipygian]]. See Help:Interwiki linking. Note also that there are templates to display a notice in articles that announce that another project has material on a subject. See Category:Interwiki link templates.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:43, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Article

I plan on creating an article on the Chohan family murders, that occurred in the UK on 2003. However, i am not completely certain that it meets the notability criteria. Here are the sources i plan on using. Any opinions? Joyson Noel Holla at me! 17:06, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The sources at User talk:Joyson Noel/Chohan family murders look very good in my opinion. I see you also started a draft at User:Joyson Noel/Chohan family murders. Once you have developed your draft further and want additional feedback, you can list your draft at Wikipedia:Requests for feedback. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 17:21, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a bit paranoid about it getting nominated for deletion later, thereby rendering my time and efforts wasted. As such, i would greatly appreciate further opinions regarding the event's notability. Joyson Noel Holla at me! 17:25, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't looked at every single of your sources, but the ones I looked at seem to support your article idea. However, it will be easier to comment if you had already written something. Nobody will delete the draft from your userspace, as long as it is not a clear copyright violation or a clear violation of one of the points at Wikipedia:User pages#What may I not have in my user pages?. See also Wikipedia:Your first article for a guide on writing an article. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 17:49, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The sources look very good, I don't think you should encounter a problem. That many sources might not be enough if you were trying to write a bio, as a violation of WP:BLP1E, but you are writing about the event, so you shouldn't have a problem. As an aside, make sure to explain the term "supergrass" as I doubt many readers outside the UK will know the term.--SPhilbrickT 17:56, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the helpful comments, gentlemen! Joyson Noel Holla at me! 06:50, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Need a review for my article

Hi. I have written the article Stijn Van Cauter in my own userspace and then moved it after it has reached an "okay" size. Please review the article and remove the "Unreviewed article" template if you find it fine. Sentient Planet (talk) 17:55, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not convinced that he meets the notability guidelines at WP:MUSIC. – ukexpat (talk) 17:59, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you are not familier with him, but he is a very prominent artist, and somewhat a celebrity, in the doom metal scene. Virtually any metal website will have some acknowledgement of him (perhaps under some of his aliases. He has so many that it's possible you'll only find "Until Death Overtakes Me" as that's his most notable one). Sentient Planet (talk) 19:29, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the absence of significant coverage in reliable sources he does not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. – ukexpat (talk) 13:12, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Infoboxes, what is going on?

I was trying to expand the article Feed (Grant novel), and the first thing I thought it needed was an infobox.

So I went and grabbed a book infobox from another article to get the structure, and replaced all the content bits. But when I previewed that, it just showed the raw code. You can see what I mean in my userspace here: User:Gnfnrf/Feed.

I am stumped as to why it isn't doing its magic thing where it makes with the infoboxing. I thought that just happened, and despite doing a lot of editing, I've never really learned much about the process. I feel like I'm missing something simple and important, but I can't figure out what.

So, the questions are, I suppose: What's going on, how do I fix it, and how stupid will I feel when I learn what I did wrong? gnfnrf (talk) 19:16, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed the syntax error. I can't predict how you will feel about it, though. A proper software environment would have told you what was wrong, of course. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:24, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That's actually not as bad (from my stupidity perspective) as I feared. I was imagining the answer was something like "Silly editor, only Glooberwatsit class articles can have templates, and this is a Shitzerpiggle!" meaning some basic concept existed about templates and infoboxes that I had never heard of. This is just a typo. I make typoes all the time. I probably would have found it eventually, but I didn't even consider that a typo in the box could break the entire thing like that. gnfnrf (talk) 19:47, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image Dump from Suisun Bay, west coast US Mothball Fleet, USS Iowa, pics taken yesterday

Hi, I have several dozen pictures such as this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1832211/suisun%20bay%20sample.JPG

And this, the image at the bottom (could someone better integrate it, please): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Green_Mountain_State_%28T-ACS-9%29

All relevant to this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suisun_Bay_Reserve_Fleet

Taken yesterday, while on a day cruise on the SS Jeremiah O'Brien. Our ship was about 150 feet away from the parked ships which may be unusual because ships and boats generally must remain 500 feet away, so these may be somewhat unique photos. In addition, the ships pictured are all scheduled to be scrapped within a year or two.

I've also got some very nice close-ups of the current state of the USS Iowa (BB-61) which is scheduled to be converted into a museum ship in LA - rent-a-cop and port-a-poty clearly visible on the deck, along with "Keep Back 500 Feet", and many more.

How crazy should I go with adding those current images to the article about Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet and about the various ships themselves? Should I simply upload all of them to wikimedia commons, and leave it to the Naval enthusiasts to integrate them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Earthpig (talkcontribs) 19:27, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    • You can definitely upload them to Commons. If you want to add them to individual ship pictures yourself, Wikipedia:Picture tutorial should help. If you would like other people to add them to appropriate articles; then you should perhaps notify relevant WikiProjects. Since these are all warships, a good place to start may be Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history which is a very active WikiProject. Just drop a note on their talk pages letting them know which files you uploaded to Commons, and they may very well have something useful to do with them. --Jayron32 19:33, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Policy re dropped criminal charges in BLPs

Do we have a policy regarding if and when it is appropriate to mention that a living person was accused of a crime, but charges were dropped (or something similar to that effect). I seem to remember reading something but can't find it now. I'm specifically asking about David Goodwillie but anything general would be appreciated too. doomgaze (talk) 19:47, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Though it regards whether to create an article or not when someone has only been accused, so it's not applicable here, I wonder if the language you remember reading is from the last part of WP:PERPETRATOR? It's in the vein of what you were talking about. I was thinking also you might have seen WP:HARM#TEST. In any event, I agree with Redrose's links above.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:23, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bingo, the little bit in WP:PERPETRATOR was what I half-remembered, guess it isn't really relevant to this situation after all. Thanks for your help guys, doomgaze (talk) 12:03, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing issues

    Hi,

For certain articles, I have some problems with editing. Any time I try to edit an article, it says I have to download something or use some kind of software. This didn't used to happen before, and just started happening today. Any time I click the edit button, it downloads a file called "index.php", and it wants me to select whether I should download software to enable me to edit or to use software I currently have. I do not know what this is, and it's stopping me from editing.

    content

In the contents of a user talk page (or any page, for that matter), if a section on a page (say, “TESTART”) is created with a title, say “TEST”, and someone else creates a section named the exact same thing, and someone puts a link for “TESTART#TEST”, which would it link to? Neither? An editor since 10.28.2010. 06:03, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that I completely follow what you're asking but if a page (Foo) has two sections titled the same thing (Bar), then a link to Foo#Bar will go to the first "Bar" section on the page. You can see this happen on the reference desks with some frequency. People will title their questions with "Question" and occasionally there will be more than one of them on the page. If you were to respond to any of them and save, when the page reloads it will automatically drop you at the first instance of that "Question" section. Dismas|(talk) 06:12, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you try it out on a sandbox page in your user space, you'll see that if you create a second section with the same title, the anchor will automatically be modified to #Test_2 . - David Biddulph (talk) 06:19, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

National Bank of Georgia (country) had maintenance tags: {{coi}}, {{notability}}, {{one source}}, {{primarysources}}, and {{refimprove}}, which indicate that the article has been edited by someone with a conflict of interest; it does not demonstrate the notability of the subject; and it does not adequately verify the content with references to independent reliable sources. You made an edit which removed those tags without correcting the underlying problems. Worse yet you inserted copyright violations copied from http://nbg.gov.ge/index.php?m=130&lng=eng. —teb728 t c 07:01, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Usurpation of an account with 35 edits

Hello! I'm Netraam, a user mainly of the Dutch wikipedia. I'd like to start contributing to the English wikipedia. For SUL reasons I'd like to usurp the account User:Netraam. However, this account has been used in the past, between 2006 and 2008. A total of 35 contributions has been made from this account, but it now seems to be inactive for over 3 years. Help with fixing Non-free media use rationale for a non-free file

I just uploaded File:Boerse stuttgart logo.png. In the non-free media use rationale, there are some pieces of text that seem to be generated automatically when filling in information for one of the parameters. For example, the description currently reads

"This is a logo owned by Boerse Stuttgart for The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing Börse Stuttgart. The purpose is to help the reader identify the institution in question visually which could not be achieved with word alone.. Further details: The official logo of Börse Stuttgart."

Similar problems occur in the text for 'Source' and 'Purpose of use' parameters. However I can't seems to figure out, what the correct wording of text for each parameter is supposed to be in order for it to appear correctly. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 08:33, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have fixed the duplication. The fields marked "ADDITIONAL INFORMATION" can usually be left blank, because the template gives you sensible defaults. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:58, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) If you want to fill in all the fields, I would suggest using {{non-free use rationale}}. {{Logo fur}} was designed to provide boilerplate text (with limited overrides) for most fields. —teb728 t c 09:03, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    @John: Thanks for fixing.

The easiest solution, when you're unsure why someone 'tags' a page, is to ask them. In this case it is a bot, but the bot is owned by Rich Farmbrough (talk · contribs) who is thus responsible for its edits, and should be able to explain the concern and reason for the tagging. (I know it's that user, because User talk:Helpful Pixie Bot redirects to his talk page)  Chzz  ►  09:22, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The bot only dated the tag. It was added by Yworo (talk · contribs), so that's the person you should be asking. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:30, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So is there a place to discuss reform of wikipedia editors and resolving revision tyranny's by editors?

A frequent problem I am coming across is that a lot of editors, rather than spending any time working *with* an edit by someone else (let's assume the edit is reasonable or close to it), they almost act like any change is unlawful and reversible instantaneously. Is there a place in wikipedia to discuss what can be done about editors who squat and claim pages as their own? Is there anything that can be done about undo-revision tyrannys by editors: Their first order of action is to undo something instantly and not contribute and work with a change in the discussion: Just outright UNDO/DELETE?PeterHarlington (talk) 15:15, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My first article "Penrose Prozess" was deleted within 2 minutes of it being online, help me get it back please

Hello!! So i have just uploaded my first article, which was supposed to be the German version of the "Penrose process". I don't know how to indicate a page being the same but the translated version, but i uploaded it anyway, trying to read it up and add a link back to the English version. Sadly within 2 minutes, my article was removed due to it being rated a duplicate as the title was obviously similar. Could anyone please help me and tell me how i can get my article re-uploaded ( i didnt save it :( ) and maybe indicate somewhere that it is a version of one article but in a different language. Thanks very much!!! MadameBruxelles (talk) 18:06, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You may have noticed that all articles and communications here are in English, that's because this is the English Wikipedia. If you want to write a German version of an article we already have you should do so on the German Wikipedia--Jac16888 Talk 18:09, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Jonathan Tonge wikipedia entry

    Jonathan Tonge (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
I tried to edit this yesterday to provide a list of more representative publications, but it has mosttly been changed back today saying I need a 'citation' - which is nonsense. The citation IS my own work???? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jontonge (talkcontribs) 18:25, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jonathan. I know it seems odd, but the problem is that on the Internet nobody knows who you are. I could create an account called JonathanTonge, and post all sorts of nonsense about you, and claim to be you, and nobody would be able to disprove it except by reference to information which is publicly available. For this reason, the criterion for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth.
Where biographies of living people are concerned, we are even more careful to insist that data be supported by reliable citations. If there is information in the article which is false and unreferenced, you or anybody may remove it; but adding new information requires a higher standard of evidence.
There is a further issue: because of neutrality, people are generally discouraged from editing articles on subjects they have a close connection with. Not forbidden, but discouraged: see WP:conflict of interest for more information.
The course I would recommend is to post on the article's talk page explaining the information you want to change, preferably with verifiable references, and leave it to others to edit the article. --ColinFine (talk) 18:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Original research (i.e. 'personal experience' and such) are not acceptable, sorry. A key policy to Wikipedia is verifiability, and in order to be verifiable, you need to use information from a reliable and independent source that is accessible by someone else other than you (especially since everyone is basically anonymous online). Examples of such sources include newspapers, websites, books, academic journals, etc.
Especially in additions like the ones you did which just might possibly be self-aggrandizing. Promotion of any kind is forbidden on Wikipedia. Praising or criticizing descriptions are used if and only if they are backed up by multiple reliable sources, hence why your edits were reverted. Even then, they are toned down as much as possible. Lists of actual products (like publications) are also frowned upon and are often removed when their presence are not essential to an article.
Additionally, if you are indeed the subject of the article then you have a conflict of interest. Whether intentionally or not, it would be hard for you to maintain complete neutrality on the subject. It is usually recommended you don't edit it directly. Try and post suggestions in the talk page instead, along with sources that can verify them.
More sources are also important in proving notability - an essential criterion for whether users decide to keep an article or delete it. As it stands, the article does not show notability (i.e. it does not explain why the subject deserves an article in an encyclopedia), adding more reliable sources fixes this.

    Hiding the IP address

IP edits cannot be reassigned to an account. If a user is accidentally logged out when posting then they can request removal of the IP address from public view at Wikipedia:Requests for oversight but I'm not sure how an oversighter will respond to a request about an IP address from before an account was created. If your concern is others linking your IP address to your user account then a solution might be to abandon the account 48azul and create a new account without mentioning the connection to 48azul. This would not be a violation of Wikipedia:Sock puppetry when 48azul has only posted here. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:11, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About pages that do not give a neutral point of view

I noticed that there are many pages that do not give a neutral point of view. In general there are 2 groups that oppose each others point of view and the result is in general that on of the group is hijacking the whole page, meaning that the page does not give proper information. A better sollution would be to give both groups their own page or part of that page so that the reader can make up their own mind. Thanks! If the edit summary doesn't explain it then look at the other contributions at the time for the editor who did it: [6]. By doing this I found this explanation. It was indeed "Y" meaning "why". It works in the "Time 100" box at 2009 Time 100. It doesn't work as you want in the "Time 100 selections (2000s)" box at 2009 Time 100 (that box has a white "2009" on red background in the left column). As you say, this is because you have manually set the color instead of letting MediaWiki do it. Black is the default color for unlinked text so MediaWiki doesn't really "change" the color of a selflink to black. It just omits making it a link and then it defaults to black if you haven't set the color. However, selflinks are also rendered as bold text. That "works" in your box but it makes no difference because the text in those fields is already bold. White bold on red background may not look like you expect for bold but see the difference: This 2009 is bold. This 2009 is not bold. I suggest you ignore that the special selflink formatting makes no difference in those fields. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:18, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see the article is tagged for speedy deletion, “as a blatant and obvious hoax”. That is because there is no key information at all, and it is not written in encyclopedic style. And, rather than asking someone else to fix the article, it would be better for you to fix it yourself, being the creator of the article (remember, anyone can edit Wikipedia). If you feel that you must request someone else to do so, it should be placed on the talk page of the article. Also, this would be more appropriately placed on the article's talk page. Fatal Wikimedia bug has returned, crashing older browsers (Netscape 7-9, etc.) in new skin

References: bugzilla:23926 report (FIXED June 2010), previous report (fixed), original report

2011 update: This fatal bug was quickly FIXED (and there's an even easier fix, below) but has recently since returned, so I'm posting a note about it. Some older machines can't use Firefox; Regardless of browser being out of date, Wikipedia is a major international (and primarily text-based) educational tool and should not crash a browser in this particular manner. This bug was confirmed here on June 21 of 2010 as occurring on several versions of older Mozilla browsers and was quickly FIXED at bugzilla:23926.

However, it has recently since reappeared. Note that this is not a style or appearance glitch which is to be expected on an older browser. The page loads fine, just as in Firefox, THEN crashes when it attemts to access additional data from bits. (somethingsomething) .org. Previously it was wikimedia but someone was able to fix the problem relatively easily. It may be a related file, as the person who fixed it indicated that the problem might reoccur for additional wikimedia modules.

Note that the page loads just fine in Netscape 7 (and presumably 9, the last version, according to reports), as it appears in Firefox, then crashes when it attempts to load something from wikimedia after the entire page is up. That is the same problem that occurred before. I have just noticed this and will post a new topic.

Also note that this is only in the new Vector skin (or whatever it's called), not the classic (pre-2009) skin. The classic skin is compatible with older browsers. So the problem can be fixed by restoring the fix that was used for bugzilla:23926 and extending it to other recent Wikimedia-bits, restoring the bugzilla fix if it was deleted from the script, or else default to old skin for older browsers. (So as to avoid unnecessarily crashing the user's browser.)

Options for Resolution: (in order of immediacy / permanence)

    1. Extend the bugzilla:23926 fix to recent bits from wikimedia that are causing the same problem.
The glitch appears to result from an error in how older Mozilla browsers read a certain specific command.

    2. Block additional widgets from wikimedia (i.e. future add-ons and scripts beyond the basic engine) on unsupported browsers, or tell the browser
to ignore script calls containing the command that does not work. Worth considering as the current skin does appear fine -- until this glitch causes it to crash.

    3. Revert to the "classic" (2007-2009) skin which works fine on older browsers, by DEFAULT for unsupported browsers.
If the above options will not work, this would be simple, global and effective.

Note that I don't have a bugzilla account and I'm stymied to create one, since I'd have to create a separate spamproof e-mail address for that sole purpose. But I can message you with a sample error report, if you wish. Note that this problem was already confirmed and fixed once; the error appears in the same fashion as before, but probably stems from recent updates to which the previous bugzilla fix was not applied. Yclept:Berr (talk) 03:22, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Additional piece of data: Just noticed, the problem does not occur on [meta.wikimedia.org] or [wiktionary.org]

    (tested using same browser). Yclept:Berr (talk) 04:26, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Appearance Settings - Darker Theme?

Hello. My apologies if this has been asked before - I have searched but can't find any specific references to this question. Also sorry if this isn't the right place to be asking.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it tiring and uncomfortable to sit gazing into light bulbs for hours at a time. I find black text on white pages has much the same effect on me. My eyes aren't great anyway - they tend to strain very easily. At the risk of rambling, I've never really understood why so many major websites default to black on white, which is fine for reading things on paper, but not so good when what you're reading is glowing at you (and yes, I've turned my monitor brightness down but it doesn't really do much except make images too dark to see).

So my question is, are there any appearance options that would let me read Wikipedia in white text (or better still, grey) on a black background? I've tried all the themes included in Preferences/Appearance and they're all variations on a black-on-white theme.

I'd even be happy to have a stab at creating my own inverted theme - if that would be possible and permissible - if there's nothing in place already. But I'd need some advice on how to go about it.. Can anyone offer any suggestions please? Thanks - Silvensis (talk) 07:17, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In the preferences screen there should be a "gadgets" tab. Under the "appearance" heading there should be a check box labeled "Use a black background with green text on the Monobook skin". As the text says, it only works with the "Monobook" skin. It may also be possible to write CSS style sheets that would have the same effect, but I don't know all of the codes for that.   Will Beback  talk  07:27, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The gadget may work with the default "Vector" skin as well - give it a try.   Will Beback  talk  07:30, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It does although not very well. There's a band of white at the top of every page that stops about half way down (cutting through) the WP logo. And the editing toolbar above this text entry window is still white. Oh yes, and there's also a jarring change where the page first appears white for a split second and then turns black with the green. Dismas|(talk) 07:47, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Going live

I created an article on my User Page under my user name. I then deleted my user name and moved the article to a page titled with the name of the person it is about - and saved it. This has not appeared on Wikipedia yet. I did it about 12 hours ago. Have I done something wrong or is it simply that there is a waiting time while it is checked. If so any idea what the average waiting time is?

Thank you..... Eva Meade (talk) 09:02, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The page you created is at Christopher Bollas (Psychoanalyst and Writer). It needs a significant amount of work though. Dismas|(talk) 09:24, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The question "Is loss of appetite a symptom of amoebiasis?" was not a request for medical advice or a diagnosis, but a request for information. Our article Amoebiasis should help answer that question. DuncanHill (talk) 12:27, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
