Welcome to the WikiProject on Estonia!

It has come to the attention of several editors that Estonia is under-represented on the English Wikipedia. To join, please sign your name with four tildes (~~~~) under the "Participants" section. Why not label yourself? Add a WikiProject Estonia userbox to your userpage.

Goals

  1. To create articles about notable Estonians, places in Estonia and other Estonia-related subjects.
  2. To expand Estonian stubs.
  3. To get as many Estonian articles as possible to Featured Status.

Participants

If you would like to participate in the project, please add your signature at the bottom of this list. You may also want to add yourself to Category:WikiProject Estonia members or place {{User WikiProject Estonia}} on your user page.

Tasks and Task Forces

General

  1. Label the talk pages of any articles about Estonian people and other Estonia-related articles with this template. See also assessment.
  2. Expand stub articles found in Category:Estonia stubs, Category:Estonian people stubs and Category:Estonia geography stubs.
  3. Copyedit Estonian articles.
  4. Wikify Estonian articles.
  5. Maintain Portal:Estonia.

Good articles

As Haapsalu Castle just passed good article review, I noticed that it the only GA-class Estonian article (see Category:GA-Class Estonia articles). Come on, guys and gals, we can do better than that! How about trying to pass at least Estonia, Tallinn, Tartu and few others important Estonian articles through GA review (Bronze Soldier of Tallinn would be good as well, except there is way too much edit warring for GA). Ideally, we should try to get GA for all Category:Top-importance Estonia articles – and then attempt featured article on few best ones. – Sander Säde 05:52, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Project Awards

The Award of the Soaring Swallow, Estonia's national bird set against Estonia's national flower, the Cornflower, is barnstar for outstanding contributions to Estonia related articles. This award is only given by a consensus of editors with this template: {{subst:wp-ee contrib award}}

The Estonian Award of National Merit barnstar is available to be given out to members whose work regarding the project is found by other members to be particularly deserving of recognition. Anyone is able is to award another user a barnstar, for whatever reason they see fit. To award the barnstar, add the following template to another user's talk page: {{subst:Estonian Barnstar|Message ~~~~}}

13 000 tagged pages

Thanks to a new tool to find WP:Estonia-related articles and categories, we went over 13 000 tagged pages today. A year and a month for 1000 pages. --Sander Säde 08:44, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

12 000 tagged pages

A new milestone - 12 058 articles are tagged with {{WikiProject Estonia}}. As you can see from the last news item, it has taken us almost 850 days to add 2000 pages - on average, 2.42 pages/day. --Sander Säde 08:37, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

10 000 tagged pages

As of now, we have 10 022 Wikipedia pages tagged with {{WikiProject Estonia}}, 1156 of which are categories and 7984 are articles (rest are templates, files and such). The number has largely increased thanks to the geographical stubs by Flying Saucer (talk · contribs) and Pelmeen10 (talk · contribs). However, once again, time to go for quality and not quantity! --Sander Säde 08:57, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

5000 tagged articles reached

Today we've reached 5034 articles, categories and templates tagged with Template:WikiProject Estonia. Well done, everybody! Now that we have the quantity, time to improve the quality of articles. --Sander Säde 12:46, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cult stones

Among ancient sacral landmarks in Estonia are cult stones (see [1]). To my knowledge, this phenomenon is not unique to Estonia; several neighbouring cultures also have them. Unfortunately, I haven't yet found the appropriate article.

Where should I look for it, or is there a need to create one? ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 11:36, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Laiksoo saga

With Laiksoo's conviction upheld and a real sentence applied, his story is likely about to end – it doesn't seem likely that the Supreme Court would accept his case. Thus, it is now time to articulate the saga. I created Joosep Laiksoo about it, but I realised that I know very little about English terminology on both car racing and accidents, so any wording help is very welcome. 2000 WikiProject Estonia articles

We recently went over 2000 articles tagged for WP:WPET. Well done, everybody!

However, 1052 of them are stub-class, 629 are start-class and 218 are unassessed. No featured class articles and just one GA-level article. Quality, people, quality, not quantity! Perhaps a little motivation is needed – how about a barnstar for getting next article to GA level and Award of the Soaring Swallow for the first FA level article? Let's get cracking, people!

-- Sander Säde 18:20, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I went through the unassessed articles and assessed them... pita, but at least now it is done. – Sander Säde 16:57, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote a minor script, that displays this page on top of your watchlist. It should work without Twinkle and it is relatively untested. If you need to change the options, edit the URL – namely &hideminor=0&days=1&limit=50, it should be self-explanatory. To install (instructions blatantly stolen from Twinkle page):
1. copy the text below and paste it into the bottom of your monobook.js file:
2. save the new monobook.js page, and
3. completely refresh your browser by bypassing your cache (hit Control-Shift-R in Firefox or Control-F5 in Internet Explorer).
The script:
addOnloadHook(estRelated);

function estRelated() {
  if (document.URL.indexOf('Special:Watchlist') == -1) return;
  estaj=sajax_init_object(null);
  estaj.open("GET", "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Recentchangeslinked&target=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Estonia/EA&hideminor=0&days=1&limit=50", true);
  estaj.onreadystatechange = function()
  {
    if(estaj.readyState != 4) return;
    sPage = estaj.responseText;
    document.getElementById("contentSub").innerHTML = sPage.substring(sPage.indexOf("<h4>"), sPage.indexOf('<div class="printfooter">') - 25);
  };
  estaj.send(null);
}
Please let me know if you have any problems or ideas.

It might be good to use as URL in this script http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Recentchangeslinked&target=User:Sander_S%C3%A4de/WPEarticles&hideminor=0&days=7&limit=50 (as link), which is updated (hopefully) more often then previous one – and contains all WikiProject Estonia articles and talk pages – you can see the list here. That list gets updated whenever I (or if someone else wants to do it as well – go ahead) runs this script. Sander Säde 18:22, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

In order to bolster development of the Estonian articles, it would be great to improve referencing and expand coverage. My suggestion is to proceed from sources to articles rather than other way round. Something along the following lines could work:

1) Enter an Estonia-related search term in Google Scholar
2) Choose an interesting source among the results
3) Summarize (some important part of) it briefly so that you don’t violate copyright
4) Insert claims from the summary with properly formatted inline references into various relevant articles

What do you think of this? Colchicum 14:59, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to this [2] (only about 1000 items, not 132,000) and this [3] (only about 750 items, not 22,900). Colchicum 16:52, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
