    Page heading spelling mistake

    Does this refer to Holosophy? If so what is the correct spelling? Page names can only be changed by 'moving' a page to a new location (title).     Yes thank you. The title should read Holosopholy. I have tried to create a new article with title Holosopholy but it is now saying that that article already exists. Now I am really confused. I thought I had made a spelling mistake but I couldn't have because Holosopholy points to the incorrect Holosophy. I seem to be trapped. ERollo (talk) 23:40, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Googling 'Holosopholy' reveals no hits, whereas 'Holosophy' does so there may be a problem in establishing which is correct and additionally whether a Wiki article is justified. Further at 04.42 (UTC) on 28 January HapHaxion moved page Holosopholy to Holosophy. In theory that should solve the spelling problem but is in the wrong direction per your spelling. However if you enter Holosopholy in the search box it redirects you to Holosophy and says it is redirected from Holosopholy. There is a redirect here in the wrong direction if your spelling is correct and an article with 'incorrect' spelling here. It looks as if notability issues not withstanding the redirect has been wrongly created. This has confused me somewhat, so hoping an editor who can follow the histories can at least get that part sorted. Eagleash (talk) 00:12, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    (edit conflict) @ERollo: The page history [1] shows you did create it with the name Holosopholy but User:HapHaxion moved it to Holosophy, maybe because there are no Google hits on "Holosopholy". This automatically creates a redirect from the old name. Did you invent the word? There are a few Google hits on "Holosophy" but apparently no common meaning of that word.     Thank you for clarifying that I did not make a spelling mistake. That puts my mind at rest. The word 'Holosophy' has been registered as a trade mark by an organisation who seem to be promoting 'well being' in a manner that deviates from the root words Holo and Soph points to Whole Wisdom/Knowledge. I have been asked by Change Managers to put the word Holosopholy on Wiki as it is meaningful to them and would like it described more fully so that the concept may be shared. Holosophy sounds like a branch of Philosophy but in contrast Holosopholy is concerned not only with thinking internally but also thinking with the hand. I would also add that a Holosopholist is not a Polymath ie a person who has a wide range of deep knowledge. A Holosopholist is someone who has the knowledge and know-how to connect knowledgable people. Indeed if Wiki was a person he/she would be described as a type of Holosopholist.     Thanks for replying. Change Managers are professionals who are employed by governments, corporations or businesses to identify routes through the complexity that modern globalisation has delivered. There is a general consensus that connecting people has merit and that learning to bridge the gap between those of opposing views is advantageous to global stability. In the old paradigm, the word Diplomat was used to describe part of this function, but it has become archaic in the sense that it has become highly stereotyped and closed. There needs to be a new way to express "the whole work of those who strive to connect" because a holosopholist is not necessarily always diplomatic. I quote: "Neologisms represent the evolving nature of the English language. Holosopholy is indeed a neologism as is Google and Crowdsourcing. Holosopholy represents the embodiment of an evolving "Diplomacy", a word which is no longer able to contribute in concept to the whole needs of globalisation. I can understand why you have to protect the integrity of the encyclopedia and that Neologisms must be tried, tested and in common use. My question is- Does it make sense to you? Do you know intuitively that this word has merit and should be shared universally now, or do I share it with a small group of reliable sources who may take 10 years to release its value publicly.     On the contrary, both Google and crowdsourcing have had entries in dictionaries for years and so are new words but no longer neologisms. I'm afraid you must ask your mysterious Change Managers to publish their original research elsewhere. Wikipedia is not the place to publish new concepts.     Don't worry about it. I am not in the slightest bit disappointed. In fact I am highly amused that Wiki considers that an attempt to connect the world is a new concept.     As I said before, change managers are professionals who are employed to advise organisations on how to implement changes when these changes are very complex. The world has become too complicated for most organisations to use the old tried and tested management techniques successfully. In many ways our language will need to evolve quickly to accommodate the changes that are going on in the world with the new capacity for communication. I expect many more new words will come your way as the world adapts to the effects that the internet has brought upon us. It is people like mysel,f who think out of the box, who are in a position to assist with this process of adaption.     I doubt the Secret Service will do much, though you are of course within your rights to contact them. People are keeping an eye on the current vandalism to the article, and if the perpetrator(s) do not stop soon, they are liable to be reported to the admins which may result in them being prevented from editing.     @Gambler1478: I'm not sure! I see you've managed to set your Twinkle preferences, so at least that part of it must be working for you. Do any of the issues at Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc#Troubleshooting installation apply to you? What are you looking at when the undo button doesn't appear? When I view that, I see four links added by Twinkle - "Restore this version" at the left, and "Rollback (AGF)", "Rollback" and "Rollback (Vandal}" at the right. Do you see those? In addition there is an "(Undo)" link at the right, which is from the core software, not from Twinkle. This editor's misuse of the publisher parameter was pointed out by DES at User talk:Srbernadette#citation format on 23 September 2015, and on countless occasions in numerous places since then. Can someone with more patience than I have please explain it in words of one syllable that this editor will understand? If some thinks that the description at Template:Cite web#Publisher can be made clearer, please do so.     Hello, @101.182.188.199: You are obviously willing to learn, and that is what we value here, so stick with it - references are notoriously difficult for newcomers to get to grips with. I can offer a couple of suggestions. Firstly, as David Biddulph suggests, only use the "|publisher=" field for the actual name of the publisher, or leave it blank. Nothing else goes there. Secondly, it helps to use the "Preview" tool when making edits, to ensure they are just right before you save them. Or try them out on your Sandbox until you are happy with them.     M.Billoo2000 My advice would be to avoid any further edits to the article and instead put your case objectively on the article talk page, notifying the other editor as you do so. Hopefully the issues can be resolved there: if not, there is a dispute resolution procedure laid down (this Help Desk isn't really part of that). The other thing is to try not to seem combative in edit summaries: being extended-confirmed or an admin doesn't give you an advantage in editing disputes, which are assessed purely on the merits of the case: Noyster (talk), 14:38, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    yeah? so? uh, I was looking at a few articles? and a number of them had 'crunchyroll' in it, at the 'license by?' but in some pages or just call it articles? use to have that, and as the link part mostly came here [3]? to most of the same title err page(s) upon here? then a few articles was saved back to the studio place or company that licenses it? which, awhile after, the word crunchyroll doesn't have a link to it? and if some other articles that still has it?

    My book is mentioned but not cited

    In an article "Layoff" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layoff My Book, Healing the Wounds: Overcoming the Trauma of Layoffs and Revitalizing Downsized Organizatins is mentioned in the article but is not cited. The correct citation is David M. Noer, Overcoming the Trauma of Layoffs and Revitalizing Downsized Organizations, Jossey-Bass: San Francisco 2009 (Revised Edition).

    I tried to point this out in the "talk" section but was baffled by the content and inability to find a space to enter my comments.

    The article Goodiepal seems to be only using references hosted by the subject himself, and seems to be very comercial.     Several reference links are non-functioning, but the subject of the article appears to meet the notability standard for Wikipedia.     Help:Gallery tag#Attributes and values says:
    • widths= Image widths in pixels (has no effect if mode is set to packed, packed-overlay, packed-hover, or slideshow)

    changing logo & editing content

    I would like to edit this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavian_Tobacco_Group by adding my company*s new logo and changing the text. I have added text in the back end and for some reason not all the changes have been applied when publish. Please advise.

    The first thing you need to do is to read about conflict of interest and paid editing. I notice also that many of the references which you have recently added are to the company website. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject has to say about itself; instead, Wikipedia relies on published reliable sources independent of the subject. Where you say "not all the changes have been applied when publish", are you referring to where you have tried to use parameters which don't exist in the relevant infobox template, such as "Traded as" (which is shown as a warning in page preview when you are editing the [page)?     Hi Andreayoung. If the new version you which to upload is in the same file format and essentially the same as File:Scandinavian Tobacco Group logo.jpg, except smaller in size, cropped, of straightened, etc., then you can simply upload it by going to the file's page and clicking "Upload a new version of this file". If, however, it is significantly different such as different in design, color, file format, etc., then you should upload the new version as a completely new file. You can do this by using Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. If you're not sure how to do this, you can ask for help at WP:MCQ or WP:FFU. As long as you provide a url for the file so that it can be downloaded and it's copyright status can be verified, then someone at either of those noticeboards should be able to help you or do it for you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:30, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Updating the logo is the kind of uncontroversial action that you are probably OK doing even with your COI Andreayoung (but you need to make that declaration before you do anything else). You won't be able to do this until your are AUTOCONFIRMED, but that should happen in about nineteen hours.

    What is inappropriate about "pinging"?

    One editor does not take kindly to being "pinged," as he/she calls it. Every time I discuss something with another editor, i make sure I include his name in full style, i.e User:such-and-such in brackets. It's a standard practice of mine aimed to simply facilitate the reader. My question is, whether this is considered bona fide "pinging" and, if so, whether this would be considered inappropriate or offensive or a type of stalking, harassment, etc. Although, I've been an editor here for a number of years, this is the first time I encounter such a complaint.     Actually, when somebody is having an active conservation with someone on some talk page or so they usually watchlist it so that any changes/addition /alteration automatically pops up in front of their eyes.Now, many editors don't like being repeatedly pinged every time one post a reply or opinion in a particular discussion since it clutters the notification box without doing any real good.Also pinging other editors at random without any proper reason can be sometimes considered as disruptive.     Hey Dale Dailey. You can submit your draft for review by a volunteer with our Articles for Creation project, by pasting {{AFC submission}} to the top of the page. This will add the draft to a list of submissions pending review.
    However, in its current state, your draft seems unlikely to be accepted because it is almost entirely referenced to the individuals autobiography. In order to show that a subject meets Wikipedia's standards for notability, you need to demonstrate that the subject has received in-depth coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Since an autobiography is written by the subject themselves, it doesn't count as independent. It's still fine to use that as a source for information, but other sources are needed to demonstrate that the subject received sufficient outside attention to qualify for their own article.     Someone has gone through the page about Yutsuda Kaidan and changed character names to "lemon." I don't know the story, so I don't know which characters they are supposed to be.     Thanks for pointing this out, IP user. It confused me and (from the history) several other editors. The character's name is "Iemon", starting with a capital "I"! So there's nothing wrong with the article.     Problem with the Armenian language code?

    According to ISO 3166-1#Current codes, the code for Armenia is 'am' but when used in {{am icon}}, it comes up as 'Amharic', which Google tells me is the official language of Ethiopia.     Hey GBMorris. The easiest way to access the most commonly used of the large number (400+) of such templates is to enable semi-automated tagging with Wikipedia:Twinkle. You can read through that linked page for additional information. Twinkle takes a little bit of getting used to, but it makes things much easier.
    Other than Twinkle, there is Category:Article message templates, but it doesn't differentiate between the most commonly used templates (probably a few dozen that make up 90%+ of all usage), and ones that may be used rarely or not at all. TimothyJosephWood 13:13, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    I would add though that using these templates doesn't actually solve the problem, and the main effect is to add the page to WP:BACKLOG for someone to fix later. Some of these backlogs are massive, as in tens of thousands of articles, so if the only thing that is done is to add a cleanup template and move on, it could literally be ten years or more until the problem gets fixed.     "sanctuary cities" in Canada

    As a Police Officer in Canada for almost 30 yrs, I have never heard of the so-called, "sanctuary cities" in Canada. I regularly arrested a variety of criminals on various charges (and sometimes :suspicion of"). If it was determined that they were not, Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants, Immigration (now called CBSA) was notified and their investigation was started. I worked on multi-jurisdictional files and never heard of, "sanctuary cities", in Canada. I think someone is trying to paint us as something we are not. Canada vigorously persues all persons illegally in our country and all levels of Law Enforcement co-operate in this endeavour.....just look at the 6 o'clock news and see reports of people trying to by-pass the system by seeking refuge in a Church. The term,"sanctuary city" has never (to my knowledge; unless it was during the,"war of 1812" or something) been used to describe a Canadian city or a municipal ideology.     Officer: I think you may be referring to the Wikipedia article Sanctuary city, which includes a very brief passage identifying Toronto and Hamilton as sanctuary cities. If you look at that portion of the article, you will notice footnotes supporting the statement. In fact, I added a reference for a separate news report about Toronto, as its status was mentioned only in passing in one of the two previously existing references.     As for the why, I don't know. I would guess that people figure that's what a watchlist is for. If you're engaged in a conversation on, for example, Talk:Tulip then I would suppose that the developers thought you'd put that page on your watchlist. By saying "attempt to fix", you seem to be assuming that something is broken. You might want to ask at WP:VPT and get a technical answer as to why the software doesn't do this now. Again, another guess, the site would have to look at every talk page edit, see who is editing, look at the subject header of the section, look up all the users who had commented in that section thus far, and notify each one.     Hello, Laneysocial. I'm not sure quite why Robert McClenon advised you to put your contact information on the talk page: I wouldn't advise you to put it anywhere in Wikipedia. What I would advise is that you read WP:PSCOI, and then put your suggestions for changes to the article on the talk page. Be as specific as you can (eg "Replace text 'XXXXXX' by 'YYYYY'"), and give reliable sources for all information - sources independent of your company where possible. For the logo, if you can give a URL where your new logo can be found, somebody can upload it and update the article.     However, you should note that your current name appears to be a violation of our username policy since names that represent an organization, or imply shared use are not allowed. You probably want to either request a change at Wikipedia:Changing username, or register a different account that complies with our policy.     (edit conflict) Hello, Cranberrytownshippa. I'm afraid there are several different problems here. Before I get to answering your specific question (which I will) I need to draw your attention to some other matters.
    First, it is not your Wiki page. It is a Wikipedia article about your town. You do not own it, you do not control its contents, and indeed you are strongly discouraged from editing the article, because you are likely to find it hard to be sufficiently neutral. Please see WP:PSCOI. If you are an employee or contractor, so that you are in any sense being paid to do this work, then you must declare this, according to the policy WP:PAID.
    Secondly, user names are not allowed which imply that they are being used for or by an organisation, or by several people. All Wikimedia accounts are required to be personal. That doesn't mean you have to use your own name, as I do: many accounts use a pseudonym of some sort. But it means that you should use an account personal to you, and if other colleagues want to edit, they should create their own personal accounts. Please see WP:USERNAME.
    Now to get to your specific question. You successfully uploaded commons:File:Kids Castle Playground in Cranberry Community Park.jpg, but you didn't edit Cranberry Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania to change the (image) file name from "Cranberry Mall parking lots and buildings.jpg" to "Kids Castle Playground in Cranberry Community Park.jpg" (I'm assuming that you meant you wanted to replace the image). You then attempted to upload it again, and got an error because that was a duplicate.
    Unfortunately, there are further problems here. First, it is not up to you to decide which picture is used in the article - that is part of the "neutral" bit I mentioned. You are welcome to suggest changes, but it is the consensus of uninvolved editors which will decide. More seriously, you have uploaded the picture saying "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following license:". Are you, the individual who uploaded that picture, personally the holder of that copyright? If you took the picture yourself, you probably are. If the photographer held the copyright and specifically transferred it to you personally, then you are. In any other case (including the case where the copyright is held by the town authorities) you do not not have the legal power to grant that licence as yourself. (I guess it's possible that it is held by the community and you hold an appointment which gives you authority to grant that licence, but even then, the statement I quoted from you above would be false).
    What needs to happen for that picture to be used - indeed, for it to remain on Wikimedia Commons - is that the actual legal holder of the copyright must specifically release it under an appropriate licence - either publicly, or in a communication to Wikimedia: see Donating copyright materials. If it is you, then you have done right, and I apologise for doubting you.
    I'm sorry that this has been long-winded and presented you with difficulties. I'm afraid this is a common experience, as very many people mistake Wikipedia for a promotional site. --ColinFine (talk) 17:50, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    The article on East Meadow, New York has gone under several disruptive edits in the past (such as the adding of unnotable persons and picture changes) Currently, instead of showing the location of the town in New York, it shows a map of the state of Washington. How does one change the map back?

    Hi Winnsley. First thing, please try to remember to sign your talk page posts as explained in WP:TILDE. Signing your posts will making much easier for other editors to see who is posted and when they posted.
    Now regarding your question, the image has already been replaced so this is really just for your future reference in case it happens again. Go to the article's page and click on "View history" and try and find the edit which changed the map. This may be a little tricky if there is no edit sum and you may have to look at a couple of edits until you find it. When you do find the edit, click on "undo" to open the edit window. Scroll down to the bottom of the window and add an edit summary explaining why the change was made. An edit summary is very important and not adding one might me your edit will be reverted as an unexplained change. Something simple such as "Changing back to correct map" should be fine. After adding an edit summary, click "Show preview" to verify that the changes made are the ones you wanted to make. If everything is OK, scroll back down to the bottom of the page and click "Save changes". If you make a mistake, don't worry about it. You can try and fix it yourself or ask for help on the article's talk page.
    Finally, before you "undo" the other persons edit, try and make sure that you're only changing the map back and not undoing any other "improvements" the editor may have made to the article. Many editors often make lots of little changes as part of a single edit, and clicking "undo" will undo them all. Also, sometimes intermediate edits are made to the relevant content and the software will not let you undo the edit. In such cases, you may have to go in a simply manually replace the image yourself. You do that by clicking on "Edit", finding the file for the incorrect map, removing it, and then re-adding the file for the correct map. As before, click "Show preview" to check you edit and "Save changes" to save your edit.     In this particular case there was some good luck, in that the vandalistic changes occurred only a bit more than an hour before the OP reported it.     • In such cases, you are usually out of luck. The best shot is to view the page history, find who added the reference, and contact them directly. When page history is long, you this tool is your friend but here, it is short enough to review manually. In that case, this edit by Joshua Issac added the link; let's see if they can help.

    I have been around for a while but am really unsure how to handle this issue. A new editor, Susan Schneegans is creating articles which are solely, or mostly, cut and paste creations from copyright free UNESCO publications such as at Challenges for innovation in Malaysia. COPYVIO doesn't seem to apply since attribution is given, but it feels totally wrong; but I can't find the policy or guidance that constrains such action. I would welcome advice and suggestions.     • If the copyright is indeed compatible with Wikipedia's licensing requirements (note that some "free" licenses, e.g. CC-BY-NC, are not compatible), there is no policy or legal reason against copy-pasting en masse. However, the copied content may not be appropriate for inclusion - for instance, the link you gave seems to me to violate WP:NOTESSAY.     Summaries at the top of the page when viewing on mobile

    Certain pages like Mithila, India and Mithila (region) have inccorect summaries at the top when viewing from a mobile or tablet. These don't appear when viewing the desktop version of the site.
