== Can neither change link nor "talk" (as suggested) ==

Was trying to leave a message on the talk page of Geoffrey Hewitt, chemical engineer + emeritus professor of Imperial College, but am only offered option to talk to myself (!)

Message should read: " Sorry, am unable to do change required. (Have never been active on English Wikipedia, only German - and that was loooong ago.) The FIRST LINK under References does not work any more. PLEASE change for me (many thanks!) to: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/g.hewitt "

Hope someone will read this and attend to it.

    Qanon

I am writing today to request the qanon page be unlocked. The entire submission is false, misleading, full of errors, and includes no facts whatsoever. It is not a "far right conspiracy theory". I'm a lifelong Democrat that follows qanon,as do many other dems&independents. And of course the author is able to make wild unsubstantiated claims while refusing to allow people to add actual facts. It's time to unlock it so BOTH sides of the story and actual facts can be told. It's disgusting that the author is allowed to mock, belittle&shame millions of Americans of all political persuasions that actively follow Q and who have done actual research into the claims. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 32.211.137.1 (talk) 00:10, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Night skin

Hello. Does Wikipedia have a night skin? White background is way too bright sometimes. I have tried the black and green skin but its still too impractical to use for a few reasons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ikayla965 (talkcontribs) 08:35, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ikayla965 The good news is that a proposal to provide a "Night mode" view came second in this year's Community Wishlist process, and is therefore among the priority improvements we've identified for the Wikimedia Foundation in the coming months: Bhunacat10 (talk), 17:45, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The downside is that the WMF take forever to actually do anything, so if you're lucky it'll be available on 2021. Joseph2302 (talk) 23:03, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bhunacat10 Joseph2302 So I'm guessing from that there are no custom skins around? Well, there goes most of my incentive to edit Wikipedia. :( Ikayla965 (talk) 20:55, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone fix the layout of Phenix Building (Chicago)?

It looks like after the multiple horizontal images, it gets really messed up and everything ends up in a column 1 character wide. I couldn't quickly spot how to fix it. Thanks in advance. - Jmabel | Talk 21:36, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Accounts can't be deleted due to attribution and technical reasons. Sorry. --Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 22:30, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not only that but the only edit this account has made to date is requesting that it be deleted. Ian.thomson (talk) 22:46, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If the issue is that the editors user name reflects their IRL name, and they do not want that to be the case (privacy issues, etc.), maybe a rename of the account might be appropriate? Cheers, Hamster Sandwich (talk) 22:54, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

First Step Act of 2018 is not the same as HR 5682 First Step Act for inmates.

President Trump did not sign HR5682 into law, he signed S.756 which has nothing to do with inmates. It has to do with Marine

This is what was signed into Law December 21, 2018 at the First Step Act of 2018. Your site has it mixed up with the HR5682, First Step Act from Federal inmates.

Passed Senate amended (08/03/2017) Save Our Seas Act of 2017 or the SOS Act of 2017

(Sec. 2) This bill amends the Marine Debris Act to revise the Marine Debris Program to require the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to work with: (1) other agencies to address both land- and sea-based sources of marine debris, and (2) the Department of State and other agencies to promote international action to reduce the incidence of marine debris.

(Sec. 3) The bill also revises the program by allowing NOAA to make sums available for assisting in the cleanup and response required by severe marine debris events.

(Sec. 4) The bill urges the President to:

support funding for research and development of bio-based and other alternatives or environmentally feasible improvements to materials that reduce municipal solid waste; work with foreign countries that contribute the most to the global marine debris problem in order to find a solution to the problem; study issues related to marine debris, including the economic impacts of marine debris; and encourage the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to consider the impact of marine debris in relevant future trade agreements. (Sec. 5) The Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee must expand to include a senior official from the State Department and from the Department of the Interior.

(Sec. 6) This bill reauthorizes for FY2018-FY2022: (1) the Marine Debris Program, (2) an information clearinghouse on marine debris, and (3) enforcement of laws about discarded marine debris from ships. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:5B0:4EC7:5338:DF2:E8DC:38D6:EFF7 (talk) 22:59, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing articles

I was editing and adding information to an article. I know it is correct and accurate information. But shortly afterward, some person kept changing it back to what it was before I edited it. Who has the authority over certain pages and why can’t my improvements to the page stay? Militaryhistorian9 (talk) 23:19, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Militaryhistorian9, I've moved your question from the Help Desk talk page to the actual Help Desk. I don't have an answer for your question now though. †dismas†|(talk) 23:21, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. After reviewing your contributions, it seems you have the last five edits here. I'm not sure what you think has been removed or changed back. Were you logged in when you made the changes that were removed? If not, then we'd need to know what edits you're talking about. †dismas†|(talk) 23:24, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Without being able to assess the edits you are concerned about, Militaryhistorian9 (because you haven't identified them), I am concerned about your wording "I know it is correct and accurate information."
It is not sufficient for you (whoever you actually are) to know (or think you know) something; it has to be referred to a Reliable sources by means of citations, so that everybody else can if they choose refer to those sources and confirm that what they say corresponds to what you have added.
Who has authority over page content? Everyone! It is a positive duty for all Wikipedia editors to challenge and if necessary remove uncited material, which can be restored if and when, but not before, citation(s) to one or more reliable sources have been added to verify it.
So, did you cite Reliable sources to verify your added information? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.217.251.247 (talk) 01:55, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is this is about the edit you made to Battle of Mogadishu (1993) on December 7th? The material you added cited no sources, and was reverted by Le Petit Chat with the edit summary "unsourced changes". Maproom (talk) 08:53, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Dissertation as a Source

Is it okay to cite a page from a PhD dissertation as a source, or is that considered "not neutral/ original research?"— Preceding unsigned comment added by LawrenceScafuri (talkcontribs) 17:09, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes and No. See WP:SCHOLARSHIP (bolding/emphasis mine):
Completed dissertations or theses written as part of the requirements for a doctorate, and which are publicly available (most via interlibrary loan or from Proquest), can be used but care should be exercised, as they are often, in part, primary sources. Some of them will have gone through a process of academic peer reviewing, of varying levels of rigor, but some will not. If possible, use theses that have been cited in the literature; supervised by recognized specialists in the field; or reviewed by third parties. Dissertations in progress have not been vetted and are not regarded as published and are thus not reliable sources as a rule. Some theses are later published in the form of scholarly monographs or peer reviewed articles, and, if available, these are usually preferable to the original thesis as sources. Masters dissertations and theses are considered reliable only if they can be shown to have had significant scholarly influence.
The best thing to do would be to post the proposed reference usage on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard and get community consensus on the particular thesis. Also post on the article talk page that there is a discussion taking place at the Reliable sources noticeboard. Any possible WP:COI issues should also be kept in mind. Shearonink (talk) 17:24, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@LawrenceScafuri: Note also that we use sources in two ways: to cite facts, and to establish notability. A dissertation can (in my opinion) almost always be used to cite facts. A dissertation can (in my opinion) almost never be used to support an assertion of notability, because it fails multiple legs of the five-fold criteria for a source that supports notability. In particular, it is not independent of the subject. -Arch dude (talk) 02:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Lucas callaghan

Why has the information for Lucas Callaghan from the television show “Aussie picker” not available? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rgm1969 (talkcontribs) 21:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Rgm1969: Over a year ago, there was a deletion discussion. The article on Callaghan did not cite any sources independent of Callaghan that were specifically about him (and not Aussie Pickers). Thus, he was found to not be notable except as a cast member of Aussie Pickers (and notability is not inherited). 21:34, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

    Lost Edit Button

Until just now, on the top bar in the right, there was an edit button, a watch button, and so on. Now those are all appearing under a views menu after I hit something and I don't know what. How do I get these buttons back to normal? Smartyllama (talk) 21:27, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Smartyllama: That sounds like it might be an issue with some skin you're using? Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering and let us know which one. Ian.thomson (talk) 21:37, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    Well, it's back now and I didn't change anything, so I guess we're good. Smartyllama (talk) 10:59, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Smartyllama, did you change the width of your browser window? Several of our common skins, including Monobook and whatever the default is nowadays (can't remember the name...), will replace some or most of the top-of-the-page buttons with a views menu if the window is too narrow to display them all. New Page Review

Amsmith536 The article will be checked by New pages patrol in any case. If you prefer to have it first looked over by the allied but separate Articles for creation process, then you change it back to a draft ("move" tab at the top of the screen; where you see a box with "Article" select "Draft" instead), then place your AFC submission template: Bhunacat10 (talk), 10:50, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Current Events Portal Problems Again

I would remove this is I could, but I can not. My bullshit detector is overloading when I read:

    Languages list - "Simple English"

I turned on the "compact list" preference option for the "Languages" list in left sidebar. It worked as I thought it would, except that I can't get to the "Simple English" wiki article. Clicking on the "99 more" box doesn't list it (even though an equiv article exists), and search under that box won't return it. Is this a software defect? {{Authority control}} is invisible at Estrid Svendsdatter. Any idea what's wrong? Just about everything at Special:Recentchangeslinked (ignoring pages that merely link to it) is edits to pages that merely link to it, edits to its talk page, or sandbox edits; the only exception is this edit that apparently just changed the label for WorldCat, and the template itself hasn't been edited in more than a year. The template's still visible at Ayn Rand, Allan Dwan, and Agricultural science (I didn't check any other pages), so nothing has broken the whole template; apparently something's just different with this article. I understand the concept of authority control, but I don't understand how this specific template works, so I don't know how to fix it. Nyttend (talk) 03:22, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Nyttend: Perhaps there is no relevant data at wikidata:Q2981947? —teb728 t c 04:59, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Template:Authority control#Description says: "If there is no information in Wikidata for the specific subject, an empty instance of this template will be dormant, meaning it will be invisible on the rendered page." I don't see any overlap between the fields at Template:Authority control#Usage and wikidata:Q2981947#identifiers so it's supposed to be empty. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:14, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It would be best if you suggest the required updates on the talk page of the article, providing appropriate references, and allow an uninvolved editor to make the changes. Infobox location map does not show up

Greetings, does someone know why Chapiquiña power plant does not show its location map? Trying to remove the current image did not help in preview. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 11:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jo-Jo Eumerus, I think that this has something to do with the way that Template:Infobox power station is set up to use coordinates from Wikidata in generating a location map. (I've checked a few of the articles using this infobox, and they all seem to have those damn Wikidata-dependent location maps rather than the location maps specified in the infoboxes. See Drax power station [and its edit window] for an example.) Since the Chapiquiña power plant has no Wikidata item, the infobox is apparently ignoring whatever is entered in the infobox location-map field. This seems to me a bad way to go about things and is certainly not reflected in the infobox's documentation. You might try asking for help at Template talk:Infobox power station, but who knows if the Wikidata fanatics will even be willing to change the template to allow hand-specified location maps to appear in accordance with what the documentation says. I'm certainly not handy enough with template coding to try fixing the infobox myself. Deor (talk) 21:25, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Safran Seats

As indicated in the references shown on the talk page move discussion in December 2018, Zodiac Seats unequivocally officially changed its name to Safran Seats. Due almost solely to limited participation, the move discussion resulted in "No Consensus". Do I have any recourse to get the name changed, such as WP:BLPN? Please {{ping}} me when you reply. --Jax 0677 (talk) 14:06, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A Wikipedia article should be named according to what its subject is usually called. A simple way to assess this is to check what it's called by the sources cited in the article. I checked this for the six sources cited in Zodiac Seats U.S., and found
      "Zodiac" 0 mentions
      "Safran" 0 mentions

This suggests that the article may be a candidate for deletion. Maproom (talk) 18:55, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Eapvisuals: Please review the conflict of interest policy and the paid editing policy, and make the appropriate declarations on your user page. You are permitted to go to the article talk page(Talk:Lilia Maraviglia) and make a formal edit request(click that link for more information) for changes to the article that you would like.
If your username is that of an agency or other organization, you will need to change it to something that indicates an individual is using the account. You may do this using one of the two methods described at WP:CHU. 331dot (talk) 15:02, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Eapvisuals: To put that a little differently, some websites allow the subject of a page (or their representatives) to have preferred control of a page about them. Wikipedia takes the opposite point of view: Here the subject of an article (and their representatives) are strongly discouraged (though not forbidden) from editing the article. The article Lilia Maraviglia is not "her profile" but Wikipedia's encyclopedic biography about her. —teb728 t c 06:12, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping, CASSIOPEIAI have sadly only been able to find an anti-source. Ah well, it depends on the criteria used. I'll comment further on the deletion discussion. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What is the point of this page? I just ran across it at Special:SpecialPages, and I tested it at user:nyttend/sandbox. I understand that it replaced wikitext with plaintext (see sandbox before and after the change), but I don't understand: why would you want to change a page type in this manner? Nyttend (talk) 21:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Nyttend: I don't know, but there's documentation linked via Help:Content model. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:18, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Have you ever wondered why ".js" and ".css" pages look different, even when having the same content as a normal wikipage? These are two example content models, enabled by default for .js and .css files. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:30, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why XTools links doesn't show at one user's Contributions page ?

In other wikimedia projects like meta.wikimedia.org and zh.wikipedia.org, I can see XTools links like Edit counter, global contribs, SUL info and etc.I wonder why in en.wikipedia.org here is no those links. --94rain (talk) 04:15, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you go to Special:Contributions/94rain and scroll to the bottom... Lourdes 05:21, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just now I realized why I could not see them because I am using the Timeless skin instead of the default Vector skin. Unfortunately, Those Xtools links do not appear when using Timeless.
How can I see those links if I want to keep using the Timeless skin? I also use Timeless on meta and those links do appear on my meta contribs page. --94rain (talk) 06:11, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    I almost pretty sure that once created accounts can't be deleted.--SirEdimon (talk) 06:14, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
But here is another thing you can do.Please refer toWP:VANISH.--94rain (talk) 06:18, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Considering that the editor has made all of one edit (which removed a space) and then the edit to this page, there is no need for a Vanish. . Just stop using the account.. Meters (talk) 06:21, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Stub Template from an Article

Hi, - I removed the stub template from Simpson Pot, but it is still shown as a stub-class article in the header. Do I need to do something else? Thanks - Langcliffe (talk) 07:50, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it to start class. Abelmoschus Esculentus talk / contribs 08:05, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can neither change link nor "talk" (as suggested)

Was trying to leave a message on the talk page of Geoffrey Hewitt, chemical engineer + emeritus professor of Imperial College, but am only offered option to talk to myself (!)

Message should read: " Sorry, am unable to do change required. (Have never been active on English Wikipedia, only German - and that was loooong ago.) The FIRST LINK under References does not work any more. PLEASE change for me (many thanks!) to: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/g.hewitt "

Hope someone will read this and attend to it.
