F1 2021 is the official video game of the 2021 Formula One and Formula 2 Championships developed by Codemasters and published by EA Sports. It is the fourteenth title in the F1 series by Codemasters and the first in the series published by Electronic Arts under its EA Sports division since F1 Career Challenge in 2003. The game is scheduled to be released on 16 July 2021 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The deluxe edition of F1 2021 is set to release 3 days before on 13 July 2021.
Development and release
Codemasters revealed F1 2021 on 15 April 2021 as the official game of the 2021 Formula One and Formula 2 Championships, featuring story mode and new circuits including Imola, Portimão and the calendar newcomer Jeddah.[1] The Montreal, Marina Bay and Melbourne circuits will also feature on the game as originally intended, despite the cancellation of these races in real life due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. The Shanghai circuit in China will also feature on the game as it forms part of the brand new Braking Point game mode.
After Codemasters was acquired by Electronic Arts, the game is the first in the series published by EA Sports.[2] The game is set to be released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as the ninth generation of video game consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 16 July 2021, which is on the British Grand Prix weekend.[3] The Deluxe Edition will launch 3 days earlier on 13 July 2021, which is on the week of the British Grand Prix.
For the first time, in career mode, it is now possible for two players to play career mode together (either as teammates or rivals). As the game is based on the 2021 Formula One season, the game will introduce rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin (who are also free agents in the F1 2020 My Team Career mode), and Yuki Tsunoda. Both Alpine and Aston Martin will also appear in the game, because both Renault and Racing Point, respectively, previously featured on F1 2020, have been rebranded for this season.
In May 2021, it was announced that seven Formula One World Champions and legends will become selectable drivers in My Team.[4]
Below are the seven selectable classic drivers:
The game is also the first game under the EA Sports branding due to the companies' purchase of Codemasters,[5] which ended on 18 February 2021,[6] just a few months before the trailer was released. It will mark the first F1 game under EA Sports since F1 Challenge 99-02/F1 Career Challenge.
Story mode
The game will introduce a story mode called Braking Point. According to a statement by Codemasters, Braking Point "immerses players into the glamorous world of Formula One, giving a taste of the lifestyle both on and off the track: the rivalries, emotion, and dedication needed to compete at the highest level." This story mode is set across three seasons: 2019 in Formula 2, 2020 in Formula One, and 2021 in Formula One as well. Braking Point is also based on the Netflix docu-series Formula 1: Drive to Survive. There are five selectable teams in Braking Point: Racing Point (later Aston Martin), Scuderia AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo Racing, Haas, and Williams. The player will race as Aiden Jackson, a rising British F2 star who is ascending the ranks in the hope of becoming a Formula One driver. While he does put up a good front for the cameras, outside the track, he is struggling in the transition to Formula One, competing against the best drivers in the world. The fictional driver Casper Akkerman is in the story. He is older than Aiden Jackson, and is more mature and experienced. He has some characteristics and traits from Kimi Räikkönen. However, with a wave of a new generation of drivers bursting onto the F1 scene, Akkerman is struggling to stay competitive in the twilight of his career. He serves as Jackson's teammate in the story. He is married to Zoe Akkerman, who is the mother of a daughter Lily. Zoe is aware of the sacrifices her husband makes to stay competitive. Devon Butler, a character from F1 2019, will also return, as Jackson's rival. Whichever team the player chooses, the character Brian Doyle is featured in the story. Doyle serves as a direct liaison to the team principal, be it Otmar Szafnauer (Racing Point-Aston Martin), Franz Tost (Scuderia AlphaTauri), Frédéric Vasseur (Alfa Romeo), Guenther Steiner (Haas), and Jost Capito (Williams).
