    Flicknife Records

Hello, FrenchyF. What is your question? I see that you have added an entry to List of record labels: A–H; but normally items should be listed only if there is already a Wikipedia article about them. Does Flicknife Records meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability? If not, then no article about them is possible, and they should not be added to the list. --ColinFine (talk) 14:31, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
They were founded forty-one years ago, are still active, have rostered a number of well-known acts, and are mentioned in 49 existing articles, so I myself (FWIW) think it likely they're notable. However, this isn't by any means my area of expertise so I won't take on the task of an article myself. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.179.94 (talk) 17:01, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
After 4 gold albums, 4 silver albums, 1 gold single, 2 silver singles, 42 years in existence, first label to release material by Soho, Adamski, Dogs D'Amour, Ozric Tentacles as well as being home for countless acts, being featured in Record Collector, Redefine, Shindig, Vive Le Rock as a label, plus countless features, reviews about our acts, over 50 mentions on Wikipedia, 3 nominations for 'Best Indie Labels (2 wins) and a Groundbreaker award, I think we have earned the right to be listed amongst labels that haven't done a tenth of what we have. If we don't because nobody here can be bothered to write an article about it then so be it but then, so will our financial contributions to Wikipedia. {FrenchyF} — Preceding unsigned comment added by FrenchyF (talkcontribs) 17:30, August 31, 2021 (UTC)
FrenchyF Donations or withholding donations has no impact on this matter. We editors have nothing to do with donations; they are collected by the Wikimedia Foundation that operates the computers Wikipedia is on. The Foundation is not involved in day to day operations. Attempting to blackmail us to get your way does not help you and does not confer notability on your label. Please review WP:ORG. . It also appears that you must read about conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures. 331dot (talk) 17:35, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Blackmail?! (Personal attack removed) You can't tell the difference between blackmail and stating a fact? It won't change anything if you don't list us. You know sweet FA about what you are talking about and the day Wikipedia, Wikimedia cease to exit, so will you but we will still be a label. Whatever else you wrote means nothing to me because unlike you, I am not an IT nerd who lives solely for the thrill of making life difficult for others. Have a good life and go in peace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FrenchyF (talkcontribs) 17:49, August 31, 2021 (UTC)
Please calm down, people. 331dot, your use of the word "blackmail" was possibly ill-judged and inflammatory. However, FrenchyF, the fact remains that:
    • you are welcome to donate to the Wikimedia Foundation or not as your choose: absolutely nothing that happens in Wikipedia depends on who has donated - in fact, nobody involved in editing Wikipedia has any way of finding out who has donated, unless they say so themselves.
    • Wikipedia is not for promotion in any shape or form. If Wikipedia has an article about your label, the article will not belong to you, will not be controlled by you, will not necessarily say what you want it to, and will not be in any way for your benefit. (Of course the subjects of many articles do get benefit from there being an article about them, but that is no part of Wikipedia's purpose, and it is not guaranteed. See WP:PROUD).
    • Furthermore, you do not get to decide whether or not your label appears in lists. Once you have declared your conflict of interest, you are welcome to suggest changes, using the edit request mechanism; but an uninvolved editor will decide what is appropriate.
    • As the veteran IP editor said, it seems likely that Flicknife does indeed meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability; but none of the the things you mention guarantee this: notability is almost entirely concerned with whether enough independent material has been published about a subject to ground an article (since Wikipedia is basically not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say, or what their associates say, but only in what people unconnected with them have published about them).
    • If the label meets the criteria for notability, then an article may be written. You are discouraged from writing it yourself, but not forbidden. Be aware, though, that writing a new article is one of the hardest tasks there is for new editors; and it is even harder when you have a conflict of interest.
This may sound as if it's all designed to "keep you out". But again, the purpose of Wikipedia is to be an encyclopaedia - which summarises what reliable independent sources say about subjects, nothing else - not to promote or publicise anybody. --ColinFine (talk) 18:08, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • FrenchyF No "IT nerd" here, just someone helping out in their spare time. I'm not techy at all. Didn't intend to offend.
ColinFine I appreciate your thoughts(really, hope it doesn't sound snarky). If I had to do it over, I would try to word my thoughts better, but that was the way I initially saw it. 331dot (talk) 19:45, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Government of the United Kingdom one month IP edit war

Government of the United Kingdom one month IP edit war .... 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 17:12, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@0mtwb9gd5wx: I don't see any edit war on that article. There is some occasional vandalism, but nothing too persistent. Either way, this is not the better place to ask for assistance on that kind of issue. Isabelle 🔔 19:01, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Isabelle Belato: 2021-07-11T08:15:42‎ to now are all reverts! So where do you think a restriction on editing request is more likely ? .... 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 19:17, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @0mtwb9gd5wx: I would go to WP:RFP and ask for the page to be semi-protected. 192.76.8.74 (talk) 19:24, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean. That would qualify as persistent vandalism, and the IP responsible for that was blocked for 31 hours for those edits. But, even if they hadn't been blocked, the request would probably be denied today as stale. To answer your question, next time you see an user adding obvious vandalism to a page, warn them and, after a final warning, report them at Administrator intervention against vandalism. Negatively biased editor removing attempts to make it more balanced

Someone wants to add to a game console article only negatively biased material about a controversy and tried to change the introduction of the article to a negatively biased commentary. When material was added to his material to give a more balanced approach, it was removed as being unnecessary or irrelevant. This person also used a citation to a video blogger with very few subscribers on YouTube who posts speculative sensationalist material it is hard to take seriously. What is the best approach to dealing with this. Should action be limited to a POV banner being added to the article or can the editor be reviewed to avoid an editing war?

    Thank you Daltonsatom (talk)

@Daltonsatom: Hi there! Per the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, the editors can discuss their ideas for improvement on the article's talk page to come to a consensus. (You didn't mention the article in question, so I don't know if this has already happened.) If needed, you could also post a request on the associated WikiProject's talk page to ask uninvolved editors to provide their feedback on the article's talk page. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:39, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I assume this is about Intellivision Amico. You have, correctly, started a discussion on the issue on the article's talk page. You have misguidedly accused 50.88.235.139 of vandalism, which means "editing (or other behavior) deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose", rather than "expressing an opinion I disagree with". 50's actions may be obstructive in outcome, but not in intention. Maproom (talk) 18:41, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I removed instances of the term vandal from my post. This did all begin because he removed material simply because he did not want the other side of his negative remarks or balanced material posted.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Daltonsatom (talkcontribs) 18:55, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

edits to the page of Gopal Prasad: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopal_Prasad

    Hello,

I made two edits to the page of Gopal Prasad: 1) replaced the photograph with a higher-resolution and more current photograph. 2) removed the warning blocks about lack of citations because these no longer applied.

The changes I made were removed by a different user, under the comment that the changes were "unconstructive". I dispute this claim as both changes were helpful and cleaned up the page. I would like to know how the user defends his/her claim that the older page was better.

    Thank you --

    8bagels

Who actually took that photograph you keep trying to add? You also added no sources, so the BLP sourcing tag must remain. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 20:11, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
8bagels, Wikipedia works by consensus: it is normal for editors to disagree sometimes about whether a change is constructive or not. When this happens, the way to move forward is to open a discussion with the editor in question to try to reach consensus. See WP:BRD. --ColinFine (talk) 22:16, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    "Abrar Hussain (filmmaker)"

Hi there, this page has been deleted by an editor called User:Explicit.

I have read the help notes on how to restore a deleted page, and it says in the first instance contact the administer responsible for deletion. But I can't see how to contact Explicit. The page was fully linked to several articles from mainstream newspapers like the Guardian, so I cannot understand why this page would be deleted.

Please could you give some simple advice on how to restore this page to wikipedia, or at least on how to make contact with this administer?

    Many Thanks

Hello, you can write them a message at their talk page User talk:Explicit, and while you don't have to, Wikipedia:Creating an account makes communication easier. I didn't see the original article, but deletion reason was that it was an expire Wikipedia:Prod and "sources rarely speak about the subject, much content about the subject without source but of the films mentioned" ~ Shushugah (he/him • talk) 20:27, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Hiding reflist on talk page?

I was just wondering if there was a way to hide the references list on a page (my talk page) since other editors tend to inadvertently add citations to their messages - I personally do not mind the reference list but a user spent 10 edits [1] trying to remove the reference list at the bottom of my talkpage while leaving me a message. If this is the wrong place to ask a question like this please let me know. Thanks! -Liancetalk/contribs 22:17, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Article Background Color

    Dear Wikipedia,

How does one customize background? Every Wikipedia article is in white and I would feel comfortable reading articles with a different background. As I have not found any option for this issue I would recommend its incorporation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DigitalMufasa (talkcontribs) 22:20, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DigitalMufasa: If you want a dark theme, I would personally recommend Dark Reader, a browser extension that tries to automatically convert any website you visit to a dark version (and usually, including on Wikipedia, does a pretty good job at it). If that's not something you want, you could also try user styles. Another option would be the Dark Mode gadget, which you can turn on at Preferences → Gadgets → Testing and development. Hope this helps! – Rummskartoffel 23:10, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Template misbehavior

The Expanse (TV series) has a redlinked category, "Award Winners Announced". If you were to submit your draft as it is now, it would be rejected quickly, as it has no independent reliable sources to support its content. A Wikipedia article about a person must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the person, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person. ButterSlipper That's the way you see it, perhaps the other party sees it very differently. Nothing is without bias, this is why sources are required. Wikipedia has not deadlines, so there is no rush. 331dot (talk) 08:36, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming an article that does not have a "more/move" tab

    Hello,

I'm trying to rename a page that does not have a "more/move" tab. There is one for the "talk" page but not for the article. The name of the article is called "Globe Life Park in Arlington". Its new name should be called "Choctaw Stadium". I added references in regards to the name change. Can someone help me with this? Thank You...

Create new Wikipedia page for a specific artist

    Hello:)

This is the first time I am trying to create a page for a specific artist, but I have to admit I am overwhelmed by the many categories.

I REALLY need some guidance as to where I create the page... Once I know it's a lot easier to read all the guidelines linked up to the specific place on Wikipedia and how to follow the rules and regulations there.

Hopefully someone can help me out and guide me to the correct place.

In Short, there is a lot of web sites on the net for the artist in question and some has a link to Wikipedia where the artist bio is supposed to be added in addition to any other info related to the artist. I need to know where to begin as well as to get some info about templates I noticed and might be of interest for the project.

    Thank you for your time:)

It is wise to gain experience of editing existing articles before trying to create a new article. Advice on the latter is at WP:Your first article. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:02, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, The Online ID verifier. I would echo what David Biddulph says. Creating a new Wikipedia article is much harder than most people imagine: anybody may do it, but that doesn't mean that you can be successful at it without practice and experience. What we are doing is writing articles in a world encyclopaedia: this is very different from creating a profile on social media. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. The very first task in creating an article is finding such independent sources (probably few or none of the websites you refer to are independent in that way): if you can't find any, then you'll know that the subject does not currently meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and any further time or effort you spend on the project will be wasted. If you can find them, then you can try creating a draft, based entirely on what those independent sources say, not on what the subject or their associates say or want to say. --ColinFine (talk) 15:08, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Claim of page and ownership

    Good day

Is it possible to take ownership of a page and restrict editing on the page? Affies (talk) 10:56, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, you can't take ownership of a page, see WP:OWN. The page can be protected if subjected to persistent vandalism. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:58, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Affies: most folks who would like to "take ownership" are more restricted, not less. They are strongly advised to not edit the article directly (see WP:COI). If you have a COI, please do not edit the article. Instead, declare the COI on your user page and make suggestions for changes and improvements on the article's talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 15:26, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Dontae Sharpe

I think Dontae Sharpe should be included in the List of wrongful convictions in the United States but don't know how to handle the page. Proxima Centauri (talk) 10:56, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Proxima Centauri: The article does not (yet) say that his conviction has been overturned or that he has been pardoned. Unless the page can now be updated to that effect (fully referenced), it can only state (as it does) that he is seeking a pardon. The existing references need to be placed inline at the points in the text which they are intended to support. His name should not be added to the list pahge you mention until it has actually happened. Edit that (when the time comes) by viewing the source in the appripriate section and add Sharpe's details in the same format as the other entries. If you have problems please feel fre to return here for advice / help. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 11:40, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would note that a pardon does not wipe away a conviction as if it never existed; accepting a pardon is an admission of guilt. This is why Rosa Parks resisted being pardoned. 331dot (talk) 17:52, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ElizabethJamey: Wikipedia stores articles in Wikitext rather than a proprietary format such as the one Word uses. You will need to learn how to edit Wikitext directly as many of us do, or learn our visual editor. Before you do anything else, please make sure the subject of your article is notable by our definition (WP:N) by finding suitable reliable published sources. This is easy to mess up (WP:CSMN). If we do not agree that the subject is notable, your article will be deleted and your effort will be wasted. -Arch dude (talk) 15:17, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tool to move refs into the reflist?

Some articles with extensive (exhaustive?!) referencing are difficult to edit because the running text is hidden in a morass of refs with citation templates. This problem as become worse as bots enthusiastically add archive links to the templates. I have manually moved refs into the reflist per WP:LDR in extreme cases, but it is very tedious. Is there a tool for this? -Arch dude (talk) 15:39, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(UPDATE) I found User:Kaniivel/Reference Organizer. Now to see if I can make it work... -Arch dude (talk)
Something I'd find really useful is a version of a Wikipedia editor which displayed anything like (to a first approximation) <ref[^>]*>[^<]*<ref[^.]+> by R; and allowed the editor to "open up" the red R by clicking on it. Maybe there already is such an editor, but I haven't come across it. Maproom (talk) 16:29, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure that you, as experienced editors, are familiar with it but for others I'd mention that toggling "on" the syntax highlighting (pen icon left of the word "Advanced" at the top of the source editor) colours everything in the edit box and makes it much easier to distinguish references from article text (which remains in black). Bisexuality Article

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisexuality

This article currently contains harmful, biphobic, incorrect information regarding the content.

"Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward both males and females,[1][2][3] or to more than one gender.[4] It may also be defined as romantic or sexual attraction to people of any sex or gender identity, which is also known as pansexuality"

Specifically this is the section that I am referencing. Bisexuality and pansexuality are two different sexualities, and to equate them on the internets widest and largest, most used, source of information is harmful and homophobic. This article is currently semi-protected. This is either a gross damaging oversight, or an intentional misleading edit by editors.

This needs to be rectified.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.253.13.149 (talk)

Hi User:Bojackh. So, if you want your colleagues to consider your complaint, I'd suggest not having your usepage consist entirely of a link to some porno video, particularly when you don't warn what it is. It doesn't make some of us feel super warm about helping you. You're working in a pretty fraught article, Killing of Ahmaud Arbery. Near as I can figure this is a black guy who was minding his own business and was murdered in cold blood (allegedly, I think they've been indicted but not convicted) by three white guys, and there was a coverup. You're trying to put in stuff indicating the victim had mental health problems in the lede, and you're being told no, that your sources aren't OK and that the lede has been extensively worked over and discussed. Since you want it in the lede, I'd just say that some people might consider this to be racist trolling. Maybe it's not, but it's not the kind of thing that, if people start to think that, is going to be super great for your future career here.
You seem to feel pretty strongly about the subject, so what I'd suggest is letting the article go and instead working on something that you don't have an emotional involvement in. Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit could use a hand and give you useful experience, for instance. Herostratus (talk) 01:31, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Reducing image size

Hi, where can I find guidance on limits of fair use image size? I'm using a flyer with a hand drawn picture of possible suspect (about 3 million of these were distributed) in article about a killing - Killing of Roberta 'Bibi' Lee. The flyer has images of the missing person and the suspect with descriptions. It would be great if the text was readable. It's not after a bot reduction of the original image. I uploaded it at 172kb and its been reduced to 101kb. Thank you. Rybkovich (talk) 21:41, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Rybkovich, I am not an expert and am also interested in an authoritative answer, but according to WP:IMAGERES within the WP:Non-free content guideline, if the image needs to be kept at full size due to loss of important details, a {{non-free no reduce}} template can be added to the image rationale page to prevent automatic resizing. That might be the case, taking the text to be critical detail which requires the image to be kept at legible resolution. If otherwise, and the guideline requires downscaling, (factual) text that is illegible after resizing should be duplicated in the image description page. – Anon423 (talk) 23:45, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Alphabetisation of Länsiviitta

I recently started an article about the Länsiviitta shopping centre. How is this supposed to be alphabetised in List of shopping malls in Finland? According to Finnish alphabetisation, Länsiviitta comes after both Lauttis and Lippulaiva (article does not yet exist), because in Finnish, "ä" is a separate letter and not a modification of "a", and comes at the end of the alphabet. However, on one hand, this is the English Wikipedia and not the Finnish one, but on the other hand, all of the names of the shopping centres involved here are in Finnish. JIP | Talk 01:03, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oof, interesting question. We appear not to have a rule for it. The article Alphabetical order says that for French anyway, letters with diacritics are treated as the base letter ("rôle comes between rock and rose, as if it were written role"). But right, it says for Finnish that the extra non-Latin letters Å, Ä, and Ö come at the end after Z. So... since that is how Finnish is handled in the wide world (I guess) and, since the proper noun Länsiviitta is a Finnish and not an English word (it wouldn't and I guess couldn't have an ä in it if was an English word), I suppose using the Finnish order would be proper and you could do that. That would be correct I guess. If it was me, I'd use the French method anyway cos I think that's friendlier to English readers and for my part that's more imporatant. Others may advise differently, but it looks like our Manual of Style doesn't cover this (Category:Wikipedia Manual of Style (regional) doesn't include advice for Swedish or Finnish), so it's up to you to what you think best. Herostratus (talk) 01:58, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Herostratus: Wikipedia:Alphabetical order does not seem to be correct anymore. Should it be marked as historical or deleted? GoingBatty (talk) 02:04, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh right User:GoingBatty, I saw that but I didn't realize it applied to article titles generally. Thanks. Hmmmm, that page is just a page -- it's not marked as any kind of rule, even a guideline, but it's not marked as an essay or anything else... it's just a page. You do see that, and its fine, but I guess its just a page that somebody wrote, wouldn't take it a rule that needs to be followed I guess. I does contradict how French is handled. It does support the Finnish method used in the real world. There does seem to be some activity on that page. I left a note on the talk page. Herostratus (talk) 11:19, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: This doesn't answer your question, but I suggest that the redlinks be deleted, as most pages of standalone lists require each entry to have a Wikipedia article to demonstrate notability. GoingBatty (talk) 02:04, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: You could check some other Finnish lists, for example List of Finnish municipalities uses Finnish alphabetisation. TSventon (talk) 07:43, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's possible that this is one of those cases were it might be reasonable to provide Manual of Style guidance? Basically we could just point to the article Alphabetical order or something. The plus on this would be to provide a framework for consistent alphabetizing. Then we would not have to slop around looking for answers every (rare) time the question comes up. It's also neater but for my part so what, as it'd be another gosh-darn rule, it comes up really rarely and even then I doubt it's of any real importance, so letting the person doing the work do what she thinks best and not micromanaging her is fine with me and neatness at the margins at this level is overrated IMO. Also any discussion would maybe end up ~50-50 and nothing would happen. I'm not going to start that discussion, but if someone wants to it might be good. Herostratus (talk) 11:19, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I Just think a list that goes goes (I'm making these up) "Arphi, Helsinki, Oulu, ... etc etc etc... Zentria, Årnheim" might seem wrong to an English speaker and make it harder for her to find the Årnheim entry (if the list was long)? Not sure. But most people aren't as up on the details of this sort of thing as the typical Wikipedia editor particularly the typical editor that can read Finnish. Most people would pronounce "wäßrig" as "wabrig" for instance I'm pretty sure. Herostratus (talk) 11:30, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just ignoring diacritics and non-English letters would be consistent with what is done with category sorting. – Rummskartoffel 11:35, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that as stated in the article ä, in some languages it is a separate letter and in some languages it is a form of a. The software that sorts the character can't tell whether the article is German or Finnish, and so has to treat it in a single way. In this case, the letter in the list is a separate letter, so I think using the Finnish order would be appropriate (at the end of the Alphabet)
Agreed with using Finnish alphabet and clarifying this in WP:Manual of Style for the future. In the case of German, ü can be replaced with ue and ß with ss, which is often done for website urls, in which case I'd sort a German ü between uc and uf, since Umlaut is a letter modifier/combo. How do Finnish websites handle it? ~ Shushugah (he/him • talk) 12:41, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Following Shugshah's comment, ä can be replaced by ae. Mjroots (talk) 13:12, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Only in German. In Finnish, a and ä are separate letters. JIP | Talk 13:57, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Collapsible Tables

I've been unsure whether I'm allowed to make tables collapsible. WP:COLLAPSE and MOS:COLLAPSE seem to indicate that collapsible tables are deprecated due to inaccessability for some users. The discussions that lead to my question are at the Podcasting WikiProject (Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Podcasting#Lists_of_Episodes) and articles that I started split discussions for, such as Talk:Up_and_Vanished Talk:The_Adam_Buxton_Podcast. TipsyElephant (talk) 02:20, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

TipsyElephant, I think the main thrust of MOS:COLLAPSE is that pre-collapsed tables (as by mw-collapsed) are inaccessible to many mobile and low-bandwidth readers. Collapsible content in general doesn't seem to be deprecated. I think that accepted practice would be to remove the mw-collapsed from the table in The Adam Buxton Podcast, keeping mw-collapsible.
The other point MOS:COLLAPSE makes, in my reading, is that pre-collapsed content is accepted practice for certain items not critical to the article, such as supplemental details or information already in the text. I think the episode list is too pertinent for this rationale. – Anon423 (talk) 10:06, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a page about my boss

Hi there, I wonder if someone could help me. I have been tasked with creating my new boss a wikipedia page. He is a relatively successful entrepreneur here in Scotland and is referenced in other pages without having a page himself (including Central FM). I have tried creating a page but it saying it is still a draft. Is this because it is going through an approval process, and if so, how long will this process take? Just so I can update him with what is going on.

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CentralFM (talkcontribs)

Hello, CentralFM. I'm afraid you and your boss have a fundamental misunderstanding about Wikipedia. If your boss meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then we could have an article about him. The article will not belong to him, will not be for his benefit, will not be under his control, will not necessarily say what he wants it to say, and should be based almost 100% on what people with no connection with him have chosen to publish about him, not on what he or his associates say or want to say. He and you will be strongly discouraged from editing that article directly, but instead should suggest edits you would like to see, using the edit request mechanism.
Having said all that, you are not prohibited from trying to create an article. about him. The steps you need to take are:
    1. Rename your account (or, more easily, abandon it and create a new one). Accounts which appear from their name to be on behalf of an organisation are not permitted, and all accounts are personal. "JohnnyatCentralFM" would be OK.
    2. Make the formal declaration required of you as a Paid editor.
    3. Look for reliably published sources which have significant coverage of your boss. Ignore anything written by him or his associates, anything published by Central FM, anything based on a press release or interview, or anything which merely mentions him.
    4. If you cannot find at least three such sources, tell him that the task he has given you is impossible, and spend your efforts somewhere else.
    5. If you can find such sources, then you are ready to begin the extremely difficult task of writing an article about somebody you know. You will need to forget absolutely everything you know about him and the organisation, and write an article based only on what the independent sources say. You should have a look at MOS:BIO too.
You have done correctly to create a draft: I have added a header so that when you think it is ready, you can submit it for review. Be aware that on Wikipedia, everybody is a volunteer, and there is no deadline.

    --ColinFine (talk) 14:32, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) @CentralFM: Thank you for being upfront about this. Since your boss requested it, it falls under our guidelines of paid editing, which require you to make a formal disclosure. Please see WP:COIPAYDISCLOSE for how to do so, and make the appropriate disclosure before continuing to edit.
Once that is done, let us have a look at Draft:John Quinn (born 1952). The biggest problem right now is that we should only have articles about "notable" topics, which means roughly that we can find multiple sources that are simultaneously (1) independent of the subject, (2) reliable, and (3) deal with the subject at length. As of now, the draft contains only that source, which pretty clearly fails point (3) (John Quinn is mentioned only in passing; furthermore, it would not be a great source for the company itself, because routine newspaper coverage counts for little to meet point (3)).
If you find appropriate sources, you should add them to the article, and then turn to the second problem, which is the promotional tone. Honestly it is not that bad for an article created for pay, but there are still a few issues. For instance, Jointly they have taken revenue and listener figures to a[n un]precedented high is peacockery and should be replaced by something such as In [year], the revenue of the station was [X] with [Y] daily listeners. followed by a source. Once these problems are met, you will be able to submit it into the "approval process" (WP:AFC) where review can take anywhere between one day and multiple weeks.
If you cannot find any appropriate sources, you should stop working on the draft, because it is unlikely to ever be accepted. If your boss thinks you are lazy, you are welcome to show them the above exchange. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 14:34, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much, my boss certainly doesn't think that I am lazy, but thank you for the appropriate/support, I will make amendments to the more "promotional parts" to the current draft, both my boss and myself want the page to be fully fact driven. With regards to my account name, I will change it after this exchange. Over the next week or so, my boss is going to forward me more articles that help flesh out his profile in a more factual, and less promotional manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CentralFM (talkcontribs)

Thank you for your feedback and I will continue to look at any further amendments required to help the page be published/improved.

@CentralFM: Before you go much further please read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing and ask your boss to read it. I don't want you to get blamed if things don't go well. -Arch dude (talk) 15:20, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need 0.5 acre for convert template

I need the spelling for Alexander_Purdie_(publisher)#Dwelling (first sentence) to read on a 0.5 acre lot. When I use the convert template it spells acres and is NOT what I want. Can an expert put into the convert template the parameter needed to have it spell acre with no "s" at the end. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:37, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Doug Coldwell: Hi there! Instead of the template, you could simply write "on a half-acre (0.20 ha) lot." Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:43, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • Nope!!! In this case I am following instructions of an ongoing review, which recommends the template. If you will notice I previously did that writing you recommend, HOWEVER I must use the template -> and apparently for the template there is a parameter that can be added that WILL spell just acre. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:48, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @Doug Coldwell: OK, how about "on a {{convert|0.5|acre|ha|adj=on}} lot", which generates "on a 0.5-acre (0.20 ha) lot" ? GoingBatty (talk) 15:02, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Can't find my declined article

Hi. I recently submitted an article for consideration, which was declined by a Wikipedia editor. The title of the article is "Not Even Emily (Emily Fan)". If I am understanding correctly, the draft should still be held in some space on Wikipedia (besides my own sandbox.) I've looked for it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:AfC_submissions_declined_as_lacking_reliable_third-party_sources?from=No and here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Declined_AfC_submissions?from=No. But can't find it. Can anyone else find it and tell me where it is? Thank you. Greg Dahlen (talk) 15:56, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Still in your sandbox, I believe Greg Dahlen.Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 15:58, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Greg Dahlen Welcome to Tea House! It's here: User:Greg Dahlen/sandbox#Not Even Emily (Emily Fan), happy editing! Shushugah (he/him • talk) 16:00, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can copy and paste the relevant bits (minus the title which is already created) to this now Red Link User:Greg Dahlen/Not Even Emily (Emily Fan). If you need assistance, I am happy to directly move it for you, but it's better you try it yourself first! Good luck! ~ Shushugah (he/him • talk) 16:03, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not copy and paste the information, simply move the page to retain the edit history. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:07, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) and Shushugah (he/him • talk). So are you saying you can see my sandbox? Yet when I go to other users's userpages, such as either of the two of you, I don't see a way to see their sandbox(es). Is it there, and I'm missing it?

If you can see my sandbox, can you edit it?

Do you know if the declined draft was in either of the lists I mentioned searching in my original post? If not, might you know why not?

    Thanks, Greg Dahlen (talk) 16:59, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Greg Dahlen. All pages on Wikipedia are publically viewable, and the majority are editable by anybody - this is not just articles, but drafts, and, yes, pages in user space. It is customary not to edit pages in somebody else's user space without their permission, but there's no technical limitation on it. To find another user's (or your own) subpages, you can go to their user or user talk page and pick User Contributions (there are other ways to get there, but that's often easiest). THen either you can find the subpages they've created in their contributions, or there's a link "Subpages" at the bottom. --ColinFine (talk) 17:07, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Post nominals: Template:Small vs Template:Post-nominals

I came across Tikka Khan, and noticed that the post-nominals in the lead used Template:Small. I've usually seen post-nominals on Wikipedia use Template:Post-nominals, and on checking MOS:POSTNOM, couldn't find anything on changing one to the other. Is there any reason to change? INDT (talk) 16:10, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why didn't my proposed article disappear?

I initiated an article on Wikipedia, Tea dance (gay event). When it was still a draft, I got a notice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Greg_Dahlen#Your_draft_article,_Draft:Tea_dances_(gay_event) 12 October 2020 that it had been deleted for inactivity. Yet I think on 20 July 2021 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tea_dance_(gay_event)&oldid=1034523562, a user moved the draft article into the mainspace. So I'm wondering, if it was deleted in 2020, how was a user able to see it to move it into the mainspace in 2021? Greg Dahlen (talk) 16:38, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It was never actually deleted - an edit was made [3], that stopped the deletion from happening. Then, when it was likely it would be deleted again for six months of inactivity, someone moved it to mainspace as a likely notable event. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:44, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like, according to the logs, it was deleted for inactivity in October of 2020, but Liz thought better of it and restored it a few minutes later. Several people then took over working on it and got it ready for mainspace. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:08, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Staveley FC 1927

Staveley won the byron cup in1927. Ernest (nudge Needham owned a winners medal. I can only assume he had some involvement. In the game. My grandfather owned one too. I'm wondering if there's any record of the full line up of the team.

It appears there are four different "Stavely FC"s. Staveley F.C., Staveley Miners Welfare F.C.Staveley Welfare F.C. and Staveley Works F.C., so we'd need to determine which one we're talking about as a first step. I'm afraid it is unlikely Wikipedia has a full team roster from that far back, but it's possible. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:40, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This probably requires an expert football historian: the only mention of the Byron cup that I could immediately find online was to the effect that Chesterfield F.C. have one in their trophy cabinet. Per that article, they have also(?) won the Derbyshire Senior Cup, which article mentions that "Staveley" were its first winners in the 1883–4 season, and again in –85, –88 and –89 (plus being losing finalists in –86 and –88!). The article does not list the winners for –1897 to –1944 inclusive.
I wonder if "Byron cup" was an older/alternative name for this competition? I suppose someone at Chesterfield would be able to tell us. I note that it's not listed in Category:Defunct football cup competitions in England (or the corresponding Category:Football cup competitions in England). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.0.2 (talk) 18:46, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
