Concerning the article covering the Battle of Coleto

Hello Karanacs. Firstly, I would like to congratulate you for your excellent work on improving articles concerned with the Texas Revolution. Thanks to you, many articles about that have been substantially improved.

I just wanted to inform you, since I have noticed you have made some changes to it, that I have not stopped my work on expanding the Battle of Coleto article. I have just been focusing on smaller Wikiprojects lately. In fact, like you, I have just submitted a self-nominated article for DYK consideration. Excellent!! I'm aiming for a future Featured Topic on Battles of the Texas Revolution (1.5 articles down, 10 to go), and I think it would not be that hard to make Goliad Campaign a Featured Topic as well (with Battle of Coleto, Battle of Agua Dulce, Battle of San Patricio, Battle of Refugio and a separate article to be created on the Goliad Massacre). My goal is to get all of the articles on the 1835 battles as well as the Battle of the Alamo to FA status by the end of the year, and then I was going to move on to the 1836 battles. Thank you for your offer to help. I would be unwise to decline the assistance of someone who, judging from the sources used for articles you have significantly contributed to, has a deep knowledge of the Texas Revolution. I don't have a wide range of literature regarding it, so I would welcome any edits you make to the Coleto article. I will also try to help out with other Texas Revolution articles. btw, excellent work thus far on the Battle of the Alamo article. My local librarians know me by name now ;) This is a fun hobby. I'd love to see Texas Revolution improved, but it scares me a bit because it is so big. Perhaps after the battle articles are all finished. I've already got a list of several books that would be useful for the Goliad Campaign. Perhaps when I get to them I can post my notes somewhere central and we can both work on incorporating the info? BSA input needed

Your inputs at the BSA FAC have been very helpful in improving the article. Thanks. User:Gadget850 has addressed all your concerns except the origins section. Please review and update the FAC. As for the the origins, we're not sure how to do it without making it excessively long and giving it undue weight for the BSA article. There is a separate history article on the history of the BSA which is rather detailed. Could you also provide more input on what you're looking for? Thank you, Sandy, for being concerned. I'm in a much better frame of mind this week :) Dad had surgery last week and is back at home now. He's got a series of tests scheduled to see if the cancer has spread and/or if he'll need further treatment for the original tumor. So far the doctors are "cautiously optimstic". I just talked to my dad, and his doctor told him that his cancer is "cured"! No more treatment, just regular checkups to make sure it doesn't come back. Blue ribbon

Let's look at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Schools/Archive_13#If_a_school_meets_some_notability_requirements_but_needs_more_sources - I posted a link to this page at your userpage [1].

Anyway, one other poster seemed to say that if a school gets Blue Ribbon, it is deserving of its own article, even if there is little else to say.

• Jh12: "To be fair, only about 5,600 out of over 133,000 eligible schools have ever received the Blue Ribbon Award, recognizing less than 4% of all US schools over a quarter of a century. About 0.2 percent of all schools are selected each year. Each state averages about 5 recipients per year, and the number is even lower when considering primary and secondary schools separately. One may not agree with the selection process, but imho the Blue Ribbon is more notable than any other award covering the United States"

You said: "There is really no information in the elementary school article that is not already in the ISD article, and you have provided no reliable sources to justify having an individual article on the elementary schools. " - The U.S. Government is a reliable source. That one reference apparently is all I need to say "it is notable," if Jh12's POV is to be applied.

Okay, so you may not agree with this concept; if so, please re-start this discussion on the Wikiproject talk page and refer to the old discussion. This issue needs to be discussed on the project talk page, if you wish to pursue this matter further. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:09, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

It is alright to have a discussion of sorts on this page, but at the same time it is also helpful to have the input of other editors. A third, or fourth, or fifth opinion would be great. Anyhow, for most schools a merge to the district article is justified. The issue is that the Blue Ribbon award is so prestigious that the school ought to get its own article, even if there are no other notable historical/cultural aspects.

Spring Branch ISD has countless other elementary schools, so we could easily fill the page (or an offshoot named "Spring Branch ISD elementary schools") with details about the schools that do not have Blue Ribbon awards. If it was a small district (with only three or four schools) a merge would be in order even if the schools pass all of the notability guidelines. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:19, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Mentorship

Hi Karanacs; I thought over your kind offer to help during any mentorship of Ottava Rima, and I think your input would be an excellent. Jb has already indicated a willingness to help, but I see he will be travelling and busy IRL, and I think at this point it would be unfair to drag him into such a committment. I havn't spoken to Ottava in a few days, and he hasn't yet explicitly agreed to such an arrangement. Still, I'm only yet reading up on the process, but I have to say it does seem do-able, I also agree that Ottava has an ability worth making an effort for. And wanting to beg a favor from you. I've got three articles I'm hoping to bring to FAC after I get back (be about August 17 or so until I'm home and able to handle an FAC). Gradison

• In here, "Sir Walter Scott, who favored the bildungsroman and open plots, recounted a friend explaining why" needs to be changed. Flynn states: "An old lady of Sir Walter Scott's acquaintance explained why she enjoyed hearing Sir Charles Crandison read aloud:". Sir Walter Scott did not. Thus, the first quote was reattributed to Scott (its from Flynn), and the second as a "recounting" although it is directly from the unnamed old woman. I cannot edit this myself as it can be construed as problematic in 100s of ways.

• This needs to restored. Versimilitude is a literary device in which an author passes off the work as the character's own. The original title of the novel is The History of Sir Charles Grandison: in a Series of Letters published from the Originals. the "series of letters published from the original" makes it Verisimilitude.

• This is not grammatically correct. In the current form, it reads: "and, on the prompting of those like Johnson, dropped this framing device from the second edition." This is not an independent clause and would need a subject to make it so.

• The line with "The psychological realism of Richardson's earlier work gives way to the expression of exemplars." must be dropped. It was added without sourcing to back it up. The phrase with Charles's somewhat pacifist method" needs to be returned to "peaceful" based on standard adjective usage. "Carol Flynn is not alone in finding" this is not verified by the paragraph. It is not about critical response, but about the difference between one character's "type" of goodness and another's. "Hagstrum p. 131"</ref>" Hagrstrum ref needs the quote removed.

Hi Ottava, welcome back! I am not going to be editing articles for you. The goal is more to figure out how you can edit them effectively. We're in no hurry, so I'd recommend taking one point at a time (if you put too many issues out at once people can feel attacked and get overly defensive). Start with the first point (the misattributed information). Were I you, I'd place a note on the talk page with the appropriate passage quoted from the source (with page number) and your proposed text change. Amber (song). I've dealt with people like him quite a bit when performing BLP mediation. They tend to be very sensitive and worried that people may be "misinformed". Wikipedia is at the top of most search engines, so it tends to be a place to start. Most of the time, they need a comforting conversation, personal communication, and telling them that you want to help them inform others, but there are certain ways it has to be written, and that you would like them to share their information and you will help them conform that to an encyclopedia. 9/10 times that worked for me. 100% of the time, they just want to be heard. Have to remember to explain why the page is needed (that there are more than 950 FAs that haven't run on the mainpage,[3] (that list is not accurate or updated), Raul got a lot of requests on his talk page, older system quickly grew to hundreds of entries,[4] impossible to sort through, tried five date requests plus unlimited other, still reached hundreds,[5] switched to five limit in Sept 2007 [6] merit-based point system put in place March 2008, [7], July 2008 gave community ability to remove/replace.[8] Also, needs to be FAQish because so many requestors appear there, confused about why there is a system and how to tally their points. You have deleted my Chip Shop Award site twice, with two different reasons:

• 15:49, 19 August 2008 Karanacs (Talk | contribs) deleted "Chip Shop Awards" ‎ (G12: Blatant copyright infringement) I’ve commented the copyright issue, than you came up with the “no meaningful content” note. Thank you for the critic anyway; I would like just mark that it is not easy to develop and make a site meaningful if you delete it twice a day.

These awards are international advertising awards, just like the Chip Shop Awards (CSA). They attract professionals to enter the awards from all over the world, just like the CSA. I kindly ask you to specify the differences between these sites and the CSA, because I can’t really see.

Professional (marketing and advertising) magazines around the UK have written about CSA already. Our next gala is tomorrow in Edinburgh. We started an international “campaign” encouraging even more international entries to the award. The CSA is a unique ad award scheme prizing the creativity itself, while it has no binding rules. In the other hand, CSA keeps a straight face by deploying well known and widely recognised jury members.

I hope my next try will be more successful and I can create a “Wikipedia-ready” site before you delete it. I am going to take my time, because I believe that it will attract many visitors.

Anyway, could you please help me with replacing the texts I’ve written so far?

Hi Lfeher. Please note that when you leave a message on a talk page, you should put it at the bottom (I know, more rules!). That is so that it is easier for people to find new messages. I didn't delete your new version of Chip Shop Awards. It looks like the content was the same as the first version, and usually another administration will delete it again if that happens. One thing I forgot to tell you about above is that Wikipedia articles need to be written in an encyclopedic tone. They shouldn't read like a website or a newsletter or an advertisement. This article will likely continue to be deleted unless it is written in a neutral, encyclopedic style and contains reliable sources. I'm not going to undelete the articles that were deleted because they were copyvios and were unencyclopedic.

On my talkpage you mentioned that the awards have been written up in several magazines. If you really want to write a good article on this topic, you will need to reference those articles, not things you know because you are involved in the award organization (that way we know it is not original research and we know the information is verifiable). You really need to start over so that the information has the proper tone. If you want help, you can add links to newspaper/magazine/journal articles here (I'm watching your talk page) or on my talk page and I can help you to figure out how to write the article from those. I didn't "correct" her at all. If anything, it was a simple error while I was typing. Her accusation was basically inflammatory and incorrect. You don't accuse people of violating talk page procedure when it is obviously a mistake and not anything with any kind of intent, which she claimed. Please reread what I said in regards to this, and reread what she said. "Please don't change user's comments:" that is obviously incorrect and improper. No AGF. No CIVIL. No anything really. If you want to discuss this further, email me. However, it is quite obvious from the other people that I discussed this with that her comment was out of line. Sandy, I think the article is really close. I've struck my oppose for now (changed to comments) and would be willing to support after a copyedit. I'm also willing to do the copyedit (I've already started), but likely can't finish it until tonight some time. Since the nom has been up a week with no supports as yet, it wouldn't surprise me if you closed it. If you do, I'll still do the copyedit and recommend Wordbuilder and Elred renom in a few weeks - maybe without the sheer length of the review others won't be scared to take a look. What do I do about a comment like that of Madcoverboy? Hi Wehwalt. When a nominator disagrees with a reviewer's points, it is best to just politely explain the reasons why you think the proposed changes would hurt the article. It looks like you've done just that. It might also be worth asking Madcoverboy if there are any particular passages that he thinks the tone is off; he might have picked up on one or two things that the rest of us missed. Concerning the Yowani Choctaws

Thank you for taking the time to look over the data on the Yowani's. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia I felt that a historical group needed inclusion for rearch purposes. While the quality of the work I question myself as i did it from my hospital room here in Manhattan, Kansas. Truthfully, I wasn't sure if I'd be around to write it. This is part of a project my cousin and I were working on when he died at Texas A & M in 2000. I was injured two months later and nothing has been done since. Last week I was too weak to bother and this week, although stronger I an still here at Mercy Hospital awainting surgery. We'll see how things turn out. Anyway, I would be pleased to have you go over it. Further, my references are all from memory, not my library, so other than internet references I have no access to better or specific data. Here we go again, Karanacs and Moni3

Here we go again. Even though I specifically asked on the FAC that this *not* be done incorrectly until it was sorted and could be done correctly by an admin, it was done incorrectly.

If anyone else notices this, *please* leave this to Karanacs and Moni3, so that Karanacs can teach Moni and I how to fix it. No matter how many times I encounter this, I don't get it.

WP:MOVE says that you can move a page over a redirect if there is only one edit, to the redirect. Then why can't I do it ??? The instructions don't say how, and when I try to move the old one to the correct name over the redirect, I am not allowed to do so. I swear, these instructions are written by admins who don't understand that regular editors have a different set of options.

The correct name is the endash; the editors set it up with redirects instead of fixing it correctly as I asked. Needs to be sorted before GimmeBot goes through. When this situation occurs at FAC, the new article has to be fixed in the following places:

• The article title has to be corrected.
• The name within the article has to be corrected.
• The article title within the FAC page has to be corrected.
• The FAC itself has to be corrected.
• The FAC page should be listed correctly on the talk page (it's not now, it's a redirect, and don't use an HTML endash in the page, it messes up GimmeBot).
• The FAC listing at WP:FAC has to be corrected.

I think Moni watches Karen's talk page, so I'm putting this here as I have to head to the airport. Karanacs, can you teach Moni3 how to do this, and can you *please* help me understand why I can't move the FAC page over the redirect even though it's only one edit and the instructions at MOVE claim that, as a non-admin, I'm supposed to be able to fix this myself? Is it an intelligence test? When I try to move, I get the error message saying the page already exists and it's not allowed, and even though WP:MOVE says I can do it, it doesn't tell me how. <Grrrrrr ... > It is utterly absurd that this is the only reason I would need the tools, and I can't figure it out and I can't do this. Because within the past couple of minutes, it looks like the FAC with the endash is the real title (no redirects), the FAC with the hyphen is redirected to the endash title, the article title has the endash in it... Cas, I didn't want someone else to fix it; I was hoping it would be left as a chance for Moni to learn the tools. If it makes you feel any better, I performed a move the other day for Gary King, and I swear to God the instructions on the move page about double redirects were truly the most bizarre thing I've ever read. I think a page history with more than one edit, according to what I read the other day, is the main reason why non-admins are not able to move pages... But I didn't compare the history of the pages before they were moved, if in fact they were. Yes, that was why I wanted this one left for you to see, so you and Karanacs could walk through it and explain it to me. The redirect page had only one edit; according to the intructions, I should have been able to move it. Yes, Cas already did it, so now you can't walk me through it. This will continue to come up until someone helps me figure it out. I guess I'll go work with Woody; it needs someone who can log in with a non-admin account and figure out why it's not working, and then rewrite the instructions. Woody told me once that the options that an admin sees are entirely different from what I see. It needs to be sorted by someone who has an admin account and a non-admin account, who can experiment and see where the short circuit is, so that I can figure out how to do this. It is the only admin function I'm unable to do at FAC (well, I could also use the ability to delete malformed FAC pages, and to semi-protect FAC pages like you had to do at that personality disorder page that kept being submitted by an IP). I tried it with my non-admin account and the interface is the same, just admins have three more checkboxes. If the page has only log entries (ie has only ever been moved) then it will allow the page move. But, if someone has then edited the page, usually to amend the redirect, then the page cannot be moved over the top: it has to be deleted. Woody (talk) 15:08, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
