Ahluwalia (Punjabi: ਅਹਲੂਵਾਲਿਆ (Gurmukhi), اہلوالیہ (Shahmukhi), अहलुवालिया (Devanagari)) is one of twelve Sikh Misls, or fighting clans of Khatris, founded by the misldar (leader of the misl) Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in mid-eighteenth century Punjab, who also found the Kapurthala State. Some Hindu Punjabis also use Ahluwalia as their last name.
History and traditions
Ahluwalia's belong to the warrior sect of Kshatriyas of Punjab region , In late 17th centuary some of them got inerested in the wine business . The term Ahluwalia came into use after the rise of a resident of the Ahlu village (located 11 miles SE of Lahore), Jassa Singh Ahluwalia as a misldar of the Sikh Kingdom of Punjab. Hence his descendants and followers came to be known by Ahluwalia . Later, descendants of other non-Sikh residents of the village also started using Ahluwalia, now a sizable community among [[Punjabis]..
Ahluwalias are one of the most progressive community of Punjab. Ahluwalias are an elite community of Punjabis. Ahluwalias are renowned for energy, enterprise and obstinacy. An old proverb “Death may budge but they won’t” alludes to this. Urban Ahluwalias often use Walia. Ahluwalias have abandoned their hereditary occupation of distillers and taken up agriculture, commerce, army, civil administration, medicine and other occupations. Ahluwalias are in more exalted commercial enterprise particularly in government service where many have achieved notable success. Some have achieved prominence in the army. Others have done so in literature and the universities, earning for themselves an acknowledged reputation as intellectuals.

- Dame Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, DStJ (2 February 1889 – 2 October 1964) was the health minister in the Indian Cabinet for ten years after India's independence from the British Raj in 1947. She was an eminent Gandhian, a freedom fighter, and a social activist. Amrit Kaur was the only daughter of Raja Harnam Singh Ahluwalia who also had 7 sons. [entry]

- Major H. P. S. Ahluwalia – Mountaineer. He climbed Mt Everest on 29 May 1965. In 1965 Indo Pak war he was injured and confined to the wheel chair. He set up Indian Spinal Injury Society in 1993. He was awarded Padma Bhushan award in 2002. Major Ahluwalia is also the chairman of Rehabilitation Council of India and is a recipient of several awards like Padamshree, Arjuna award, National Award for the best work done in the field of Disability, order of the Khalsa (Nissan A Khalsa). He has written several books like ‘Higher than Everest’, ‘Beyond the Himalayas’, ‘Everest is within you’.[8]

He once aspired to be a sportsman but has become one of the best loved guys of Indian television. He first found popularity as Rishi Grewal of ‘Kahin To Hoga’ by Balaji. - Pooja Batra Ahluwalia – Indian actress. She shot to fame in the early 90's when she was crowned Miss India in 1993. Pooja Batra is married to an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Sonu Ahluwalia, and resides in Los Angeles, California.
- Manpreet Brar Walia – won the Miss India crown in 1995. She was then first runner-up at the 1995 Miss Universe pageant, behind Miss USA Chelsi Smith. Brar modeled an ethnic wardrobe designed by Ritu Kumar and financed by The Times of India.
- Sonu Walia – Bollywood actress who has acted in films such as Khoon Bhari Maang. She won the Miss India contest in 1985 and went on to compete in Miss Universe 1985. She also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Khoon Bhari Maang with Rekha and Kabir Bedi in year 1988.
