Republican presidential primaries, 2012

Incumbent President

The Republican presidential primaries for the United States presidential election of 2012 will be held in the 2012 calendar year and be used to determine the presidential nominee of the Republican Party.

Calendar

Guidelines for primary and caucus dates

A temporary committee of the Republican National Committee (RNC), set up in 2010, recommended a new plan. Under this plan, the traditional states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina) would hold their events in February; states that elect delegates proportionally could hold their events in March, with winner-take-all states and any other remaining states holding their events from April onward.[1] The amendment was passed in August 2010 by the full RNC by a vote of 103–41.[2]

Straw polls

Several Republican and conservative organizations have held straw polls to test the support of potential presidential candidates among their respective memberships.[citation needed] The Ames Straw Poll, which traditionally receives major media attention and sometimes causes candidates to withdraw from the race, will be held on August 13, 2011.[3]

Speculated

The following is a list of individuals who are being discussed – in two or more unique, reputable sources that are less than one month old – in regard to the 2012 primary. They are listed in order of the date of the most recent media citation.

Speculated to run

Rick Perry
Governor of Texas
August 1, 2011: USA Today: "Perry, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, says he'll decide soon whether to make a White House bid in 2012. His supporters are already trying to gin up support for him in Iowa, home to the nation's first presidential caucus."[54]

August 1, 2011: RealClearPolitics: "Perry has been publicly flirting with a presidential run, and is reportedly eyeing a late-August campaign launch."[55]

George Pataki
Former Governor of New York
July 26, 2011: CNN: "Need another sign that former New York Gov. George Pataki is once again flirting with a bid for the Republican presidential nomination? If so, here it is: One week after making stops in Iowa, the state that votes first in the presidential primary and caucus calendar, he's now heading to New Hampshire, which holds the first primary in the race for the White House."[56]

July 29, 2011: Nashua Telegraph: "Former New York Gov. George Pataki said he is 'seriously' considering a 2012 Republican run for president and knows he has to decide pretty soon. Pataki said he’s yet to see any of the current and likely GOP candidates place enough emphasis as he would on reducing the nation’s $14 trillion federal debt."[57]

John R. Bolton
(from Maryland)
Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
July 28, 2011: The Hill: "Former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton is speaking out on the budget debate — but don’t construe that to mean he is closer to getting into the race for the White House.....While [Bolton] said his budget statement 'doesn’t foreshadow a decision', it also 'certainly doesn’t preclude a decision to run, that’s for sure'."[58]

July 28, 2011: Politico: "While there is still more than a month until Bolton’s self imposed deadline (for deciding whether to run for the GOP presidential nomination), he said he’s been doing his 'due diligence' and meeting with people across the country."[59]

Sarah Palin
Former Governor
of Alaska
July 27, 2011: ABC News: "Palin will likely cement her role in the 2012 election in the coming weeks. In a Fox News appearance earlier this month, she acknowledged that the deadline to get into the presidential race is fast approaching."[60]

July 28, 2011: CBS News: "Palin is heading back to Iowa in September, sparking speculation that she is planning a 2012 presidential run."[61]

File:David duke belgium 2008.jpg
David Duke

Former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives

July 18, 2011: The Jewish Week: "The latest politician to threaten to toss his hat in the ring to unseat the first African-American president is former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Duke.....says he plans to make a 25-state tour to test support for his viability for the 2012 Republican nomination."[62]

July 25, 2011: WVUE-TV: "David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, is launching a 25-state tour this month to feel out his prospects for the Oval Office in 2012."[63]

Rudy Giuliani
Former Mayor
of New York City
July 16, 2011: Politico: "Rudy Giuliani says he’s seriously considering another White House run — a bid that would look dramatically different than his campaign four years ago."[64]

July 20, 2011: The Washington Post: "Giuliani, according to those close to him, is still looking very seriously at a run for president and had publicly said he will run if he believes no one in the current field can beat President Obama."[65]

Declined bids

The following people, who were speculated to be potential candidates for the Republican Party nomination for U.S. president have – following the 2010 midterm elections – clearly and unequivocally denied interest publicly, or released Shermanesque statements, or have declared candidacy for a different political office in 2012, etc. This also includes anyone who has endorsed a declared presidential candidate.

Previous

The following people have been the object of presidential speculation in past media reports, but have not recently signaled an interest in actually running. This gallery does not include people who have declined to run (see above).
