Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    August 31

What's that? Here it is ranked as the No1-viewed article in 2012 - but there's nothing to see and the only viewers are listed between the 8 and 12 of December 2010. Would be interesting ;-) 111Alleskönner (talk) 00:20, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It says "Most viewed articles in 201012". That means 2010 December and not 2012. All 1,292,082,755 alleged page views were 11 December 2010. It was discussed at Talk:Main Page/Archive 163#Question about page view statistics, but I couldn't give a proper answer and still cannot. The creator of the tool was asked at User talk:Henrik/Archive 14#Wikipedia Visitor traffic but didn't answer. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:32, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    OK, thanks =) (but isn't it a bit weird?) 111Alleskönner (talk) 02:08, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    incategory

I see several articles with the word "love" in the title here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:All_articles_lacking_sources&from=I

This link: Help:Searching#Search_engine_features says I should be able to type "Love" incategory:All_articles_lacking_source but nothing matches. What am I doing wrong?

Ideally, I would like to find keywords that appear in the title or in the body that are also incategory:All_articles_lacking_source

Please help. Many thanks, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:12, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you leaving the last "s" off of "sources"? - Purplewowies (talk) 01:20, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Searching#Search_engine_features says: "incategory: – using the incategory: parameter returns pages in a given category (as long as the pages are directly categorized, and not transcluded through templates)."
The problem is that maintenance categories like Category:All articles lacking sources are nearly always transcluded through templates, for example Template:Unreferenced. The search function searches the wiki source of the article. The template name is in the wiki source but not the name of categories added by the template. You can try searching on the template name instead but it's not a reliable method to get all articles and no false hits. Try unreferenced intitle:love and then try replacing "unreferenced" by various redirects shown at [1], or use OR to search multiple template redirects at the same time. Note that intitle:love only searches pages with love in the title. Without using intitle you get lots of articles with love in the article body but not title. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:32, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

None of that worked. :) I'm so sorry. But, it gave me a clue to simply search the words unreferenced and India and I get exactly what I want. Funny thing is, the word unreferenced doesn't appear in the articles. I just don't understand why it works. Anyway, thanks to your kind and thoughtful replies, I think the problem is solved. Many thanks. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:39, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Resolved

    Thanks again folks. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:12, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Anna, "unreferenced" appears in the source as {{Unreferenced}} or {{Unreferenced stub}}, that is how this sorcery works ;) jonkerz ♠talk 08:23, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhhh, you are very clever indeed. That would never have occurred to me. Thank you so much. I learned something new today. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:30, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why you said "None of that worked." unreferenced intitle:love was a link and it does what I thought you wanted by only searching articles with love in the title. If you want articles with "love" anywhere then just search unreferenced love. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:54, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. That did work. I got mixed up. I was quite frazzled at the time and was considering doing horrible things to my computer with a toasting fork. I didn't mean to appear ungrateful. You did solve the problem, which, by the way, has put a wayward editor who I'm looking after back on track. Thank you very kindly, my friend. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:34, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Translation to English

When requesting a new page to be created, if the page already exists in a language other than English, is there a process for translating the existing page to English or does one go ahead and submit the request for the new page?72.188.73.163 (talk) 01:53, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can create the English version as a stub and then tag it so it shows up as needed translation from the other Wikipedia. See WP:RFT RudolfRed (talk) 04:27, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What's happened to the revision history?

    Resolved

When I was viewing the revision history of this page, I saw that every entry had been highlighted in a pale blue, and a link that said "[automatically accepted]" after each one. I'd thought my recent application for Reviewer had something to do with it, but I haven't got the right yet. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 08:31, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently this page has Pending changes enabled. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:27, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So it's started already? A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 09:36, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This looks like a mistake. The log entry says "restoring previous protection level", but the article was previously semi-protected. I've left a message at User talk:Calmer Waters. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:03, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I went to a different page and the top several entries of the history show in green "updated since my last visit" so it looks like some kind of feature has been added or turned on. RJFJR (talk) 13:23, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It should happen for all pages on your watchlist when you view the page history before having viewed the most recent version. You can disable it with this in your .css:
    span.updatedmarker{display:none;}

    PrimeHunter (talk) 13:39, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You know, I bet I almost always go to history from the article rather than directly from my watch list so I never saw it before. Interesting. RJFJR (talk) 14:08, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why it is under pending changes. I would surmise that I had inadvertently clicked that option, but can't think of a reason why (I'm well aware that pending changes are over). Thinking about it, I'm not sure why it is possible to even do so. It is not an option when using the twinkle ((pp) tab, but is possible from going through the drop down menu (page) --> (protect page). I can own guess that while scrolling down with my touch pad mouse to the save button, I had dragged the option in that field. Good catch Floating Boat and I'll go ahead and remove it. Summary box

Hi, Could you tell me how to create a summary box like the one shown at the start in this article please Cricket (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)? Thanks! Vemuss (talk) 13:33, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Full instructions are at Help:Infobox. There may well be an infobox suitable for your needs already; there's a complete list here. Yunshui  13:35, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Are you talking about the box at the right-hand side? That's called an infobox. You might want to see Help:Infobox. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 13:37, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you literally mean like Cricket with the fields showed there then it uses {{Infobox sport}}. What is the article about? PrimeHunter (talk) 13:43, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Correct information being deleted/false info being inserted

Not sure if this is the right area to put this in, but I take a lot of offense to the writer who keeps editing my name out of the entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-sports_trading_card#Sketch_cards My name is Rusty Gilligan. I have been widely known as the 'creator of sketch cards' back in late 1992/early 1993 with Clubhouse Diamonds series 2... a set that I also designed for the company Clubhouse Diamonds (aka Gentleman's Club Magazine under the direction of Brian 'Buddy' Fetter) I belong to a sketch card group on Facebook where I am widely known and acknowledged as their creator. ref: http://adulttradingcards.com/?page_id=404 from a leading industry source. I recently appeared at the Pop Art Con in PA, where I was acknowledged as the creator of this medium. ref: http://www.popartcon.com/rusty-gilligan/ This event was sponsored by Non-Sports Update Magazine, an authority in the field. ref: http://www.nonsportupdate.com/ The card sets that came AFTER our creation and release into the market (Defective Comics and Simpsons cards) were leaked information about our creation from the sales associates at Capitol City Distribution, and then everyone started using the medium of 'sketch cards' - at the time, we called them 'sketchers'. I don't want to be rude here, but I started in comics and trading cards in 1978. I've been widely known for my art and work behind the scenes in collectibles... my work in film: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0319207/... and my work with producers such as (cards) Topps, Upper Deck, Fleer, Skybox, and (comics) Marvel, DC, Heavy Metal, Big Bang, Image, and many more. I was also a writer/reporter/contributor for many trading card and comic book magazines including Comic Book Collector, Card Collector's Price Guide, Hero, and others. I would like very much to have my contribution to this industry left alone in the article. It is unfair of someone to come along and erase it. Thank you very much - Rusty Gilligan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rustygilligan (talkcontribs) 15:49, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Where to upload pictures

In recent years I have uploaded some hundreds of photos to Wikimedia, many of which I have used in WP articles. I find that option convenient. I see that there is also a WP upload option. Why? I can't remember using it, but have an impression that I may once have tried and it was harder to use. Is the impression correct? What is the difference, whom does it affect, how, and why? Which of the two is preferable, and why? I assume that I am user number 113355 to ask this, so if anyone would like to refer me to where I couldn't spot the answer instead of wearily going through it all again... JonRichfield (talk) 18:24, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking images that you have created yourself, that are public domain or that are not eligible for copyright protection should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Images that are being used under En Wikipedia's non-free content criteria should be uploaded locally to En Wikipedia.--ukexpat (talk) 18:35, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And images that are uploaded to Commons are able to be used at any of the WikiMedia projects such as Wikipedias in other languages. If an image is uploaded just to a specific language Wikipedia, that is the only place that the image can be used unless it is also uploaded to each other Wikipedia. Dismas|(talk) 23:15, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you folks. It then seems to me that, since I am not a pro photographer, and I am perfectly willing for non-En Wikis to use the material, I should continue to use commons. It occurs to me to wonder whether there any is place where this consideration is made plain, such as in an FAQ that I have missed, rather than pestering you? Hi, yesterday someone added a line to the Pacific Gas and Electric article in the "San Bruno, California explosion" section about the company's recent advertising campaign. My question concerns the wikilink that was added for CEO Tony Earley, which actually directs to the page for author Tony Earley. PG&E CEO Tony Earley doesn't actually have a Wikipedia article. Is the best thing to do here to just remove the wikilink? If so, could someone do this for me? I'm an employee of PG&E, so in general I prefer not to edit the article, but I may do this later if the link is still there. Thanks, PParmley (talk) 18:44, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! The best thing to do is to change the link to read [[Tony Earley (business)|Tony Earley]] or something like that. This will turn it into a "redlink" that will lead someone to create the article Tony Earley (business), which is how Wikipedia handles multiple articles with the same title. This process is known by the term "disambiguation" at Wikipedia (kind of a mouthful, I know) and the details of how to do it are at Wikipedia:Disambiguation. --Jayron32 18:59, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you do the above then the article will display Tony Earley so the name is shown correctly but in red to indicate that this Tony Earley has no article. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:08, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Reassessing quality rating of articles

Hi there. I've been trying to find some guidance on the reassessment of articles and their quality rating within a particular WikiProject − in this case, WP The Beatles. Specifically, about how one goes about getting the article reassessed, pre GA level (where the process is quite clear, obviously). There are a number of George Harrison song articles I've been working on, all currently Cs on the project's quality scale, that I believe could well be Bs now. Looking in the edit history and talk pages for similar articles, I've noticed examples of editors contributing quite heavily to an article and then simply promoting it on the quality scale themselves − is that an acceptable approach, does anyone know? Is it okay to carry out the reassessment oneself? I have the books and reference material to give all the Harrison articles the improvements they need content-wise, so I'm happy to put the work in − in other words, the genuine quality of an article is more important to me than the "score"/rating itself. On the other hand, when the work's all done on one article, I'd like to see it acknowledged in the quality rating, and then move on to the next article. Would appreciate some guidance on this. Many thanks, JG66 (talk) 03:07, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's not wrong to do it yourself, but I don't do it because I tend to falsely inflate ratings (in general, but particularly if I've worked on the article). You can ask at the relevant Wikiproject. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:15, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, Purplewowies. If anything, I tend to set standards that are a little on the too-high side (think so, anyway), but I'll probably do a bit of both: ie, carry out my own quality reassessments, and leave messages on the article talk pages and/or the WP page. Thanks again. Cheers, JG66 (talk) 04:40, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd still like some sort of explanation why this fix is okay and also why some sites don't have that part. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:21, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is needed for the Wikipedia software to recognize links and tell them apart from strings such as "wikipedia.org". All websites use "http://" or "https://", but some modern browsers (such as newer versions of Chrome and Firefox) hides it. jonkerz ♠talk 10:13, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The URL must start with a supported URI scheme. http:// and https:// are always supported. gopher://, irc://, ircs://, ftp://, news:// and mailto: will create a link and an icon but require an agent registered in the browser. As Jonkerz noted, a lot of browsers now hide the URI in the address bar, but if you copy and paste from the address bar, the URI will be included in the paste. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 10:40, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Sheenagh Pugh

This page, Sheenagh Pugh (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), which is a biographical article about me, keeps getting vandalised by someone who leaves fake employment details. I have to keep visiting and deleting them. I don't know what ISP means but I gather it's something like a traceable address that gets left whenever someone visits and edits. Can't it be made impossible for whoever uses that address to post on this article?

I can't log in under my own name because I've forgotten not just my password but my username so I can't get the password back because it says give your username to retrieve password, and I've lost both. 81.153.87.237 (talk) 08:58, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Signature customization

Hi all my username denotes a street junction. I have experimented some but would much appreciate 2 technical tips. 1st the appearance of a wooden post between "Market St." and "Diamond St." and 2nd if there is some code that tapers the <small> to 2 or 3 degrees to give the "sign" depth and 3d perception. This is my code as it stands now:

Also better font for a old 18th/19th century street sign? Thanks! Market St.||Diamond St. 12:16, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Page title

    Hi,

I am trying to edit Colm O' Donoghue,s page. Can anyone help me with two questions:-

    1) How do I edit the title page? I want it to read Colm O'Donoghue Jockey instead of Colm O'Donoghue.

    2) How do I upload photographs without violating copyright?

    Thank you in advance

Eileenog — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eileenog (talkcontribs) 12:30, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    1. You'd have to move the page to retitle it (which autoconfirmed users can do), but why would you want the title to be "Colm O'Donoghue (jockey)" when there are no other Colm O'Donoghues?
    2. If you upload photographs you have taken yourself, you have the copyright so you won't violate anyone else's.
Hope this helped! A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 12:56, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A boat that can float is right, however if reliable sources refer to the subject matter by his name (sans the "jockey") then Wikipedia:Article_titles would advise to leave the article as is. To make a new page as described above when media sources do not refer to "jockey" in the name would fit appear as "Colm O'Donoghue (jockey)" with a lowercase "j", if they are pics out of media there may be ways to "fair use" a few in low resolution without a problem.Market St.IDiamond St. 13:00, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Marketdiamond and thank you for adding to my response, but I think you would have to have a very good reason to claim fair use; e.g. if the jockey's dead and there wouldn't be a chance anyone could take a picture themselves. As the jockey seems to be alive, there probably wouldn't need to be any fair use pictures. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 13:46, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, exactly. There's an article I contribute to where fans kept trying to add fair-use images, and they were removed because it was possible to find a free alternative. However, if a person finds an image that doesn't have a license attached (which one should always assume is fair use), they may be able to contact the owner and ask them to release it under a free license congruent with Wikipedia's use. - Purplewowies (talk) 14:20, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
He is apparently still alive, so the fair use option is a no-go. You can add pictures you take yourself, or ones taken by others, if they license it with one of the acceptable Wikipedia:File copyright tags/Free licensesSPhilbrick(Talk) 15:02, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Still alive? That makes it somewhat possible to get your own image of him ;-) Sorry I had assumed otherwise. Hope my link helped you with the title stuff! Marketdiamond (talk) 20:52, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Astrology & Horoscope articles

Is there a Wikipedia administrator who knows about psuedoscience or any project about psuodoscience I can talk to, because I am trying to keep collaboration and factual information with the Western astrology and Chinese Zodiac signs. What I am trying to think is making two new articles to redirect where all the signs and information are in one article. An article for the list and facts of Western astrology and one for the Chinese zodiac, and other horoscopes. There are repeats of sabatage deletions from among IP and confirmed users who believe it is useless, when from earlier users it was stated as reliable as facts. In truth I am just stating the facts, the article doesn't mean it is true, it's only stating mythological details, such as a person born in the year of Ra, it is only stating folkore. I would really like to make two articles where I can redirect each sign and paste in to the articles for Western astrology and Chinese Zodiac. Check also on WP:RSN.--GoShow (...............) 18:16, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you persist in accusing contributors of making 'sabotage deletions' to articles, you are liable to find yourself blocked from editing. What you appear to be proposing is a WP:POVFORK, which would be contrary to policy. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:01, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(There are two directly relevant WikiProjects, WikiProject Pseudoscience and WikiProject Rational Skepticism. From WP:RSN all I need is a way to redirect the astrological signs I am simply investigating not making accusations, at least this user had the sense to show suggestions although yes possibly more skepticism, and thank you for your cooperation.--GoShow (...............) 00:21, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble when it comes to categories

I can't yet understand some categories, for instance, since Canada is aiding the Syrian rebels in the ongoing Syrian civil war, would that make it suitable to categorize the article into Category:Wars involving Canada? "Blurb" about PADRES gives incorrect date of 1979 although content of article gives correct date of 1969 for founding

    Dear Wiki people,

Thanks for your good work. I don't know how to correct the "blurb" or opening paragraph, which contains the erroneous date of 1979 for the founding of the "Chicano priests organization" PADRES, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PADRES.

You have 1979 there, but the correct date of 1969 is listed in the article. I have occasionally submitted corrections or additions to other Wikipedia articles on other topics before, but don't know how to change the opening blurb.

As a result of the error, you also have PADRES incorrectly listed in the category of "Religious organizations established in 1979."

Change to 1969 and you're golden.

    Government images public domain?

The picture in this news article was taken and released by the National Park Service, a government agency. Does that mean that it's in the public domain? Because I notice when trying to upload it that there are only 7 or so agencies listed in the public domain government agency option and this isn't one of them. Of course, the US Fish and Wildlife Service isn't listed on there either and I know for a fact that their stuff is public domain. SilverserenC 20:17, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, which seven are listed? (NPS is US Interior Dept and USF&W is Agriculture Dept., I believe.) But there maybe a more fundamental problem. The source you provided, says "NPS file", but how do you or we know who by, and under what license, if any, the work was created and released? For example, the Park Service does photo contests, and asks the creator to release all rights to the NPS, but retain the right to be the sole private commercial exploiter; than it's not fully licensed and it's not the work of the NPS. (In short, I don't think the newspaper -- by itself -- is enough to determine that it was taken by an NPS employee, in the course of her work.) Alanscottwalker (talk) 20:45, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's true, I didn't think of that. How exactly would I go about figuring out what the status of the image is then? SilverserenC 20:54, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know. Some people seem to be really good at tracking down where the 'original' file is on the internet (if it is on the internet). I am not sure how they do so. The other option is to contact the NPS. Sorry. Alanscottwalker (talk) 21:06, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Or contact the CSM (they may be familiar with what 3rd parties like themselves can use it for) here: CSM also there is a NPS "laws and policies" contact site and this interesting page (when replacing "shen" with "yell" in the URL there is a 404).Marketdiamond (talk) 21:13, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How much weight does Wikipedia give to the opinions of experts in a particular field?

If there were some neutral, non-biased experts in a particular field who disliked how a particular article was written, should their opinions hold more weight on that Wikipedia article than someone with no professional qualifications on this topic? Futurist110 (talk) 00:17, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No. We go by reliable sources and the style guide, not by a particular editor's preference. RudolfRed (talk) 01:50, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It depends a bit on what you mean by "how a particular article was written", though. If experts are saying that an article is somehow misleading, or that it covers trivial issues in great detail while barely explaining key concepts, or that it puts undue weight on discredited ideas, then we would do well to listen to these experts (assuming their claims to expertise can be confirmed). Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 12:36, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Robert Young and CalvinTy are correspondents of the Gerontology Research Group. They have said on numerous occasions that Kamato Hongo and Carrie C. White should be removed from the Oldest people Wikipedia page. I can provide their quotes for you if you want. The GRG is an organization that deals with verifying supercentenarians, so Robert and CalvinTy are experts in this field. However, a particular editor has a problem with modifying the Oldest people Wikipedia page right now despite the fact that he is not an expert in this field like Robert and CalvinTy are. He says that the GRG should modify an old list of supercentenarians, but Robert and CalvinTy said that the GRG doesn't modify these old lists anymore. Should we listen to Robert and CalvinTy in this case? Futurist110 (talk) 20:35, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If they are experts in the field then it should be easier for them to provide reliable sources for proposed edits.MilborneOne (talk) 20:46, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They did provide reliable sources but Canada Jack thinks that these sources are not good enough, despite his lack of qualifications in this field of research. Futurist110 (talk) 22:30, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The editor's qualifications do not matter. What matters is the source. See WP:RS on the criteria for reliable sources. Also, read WP:DR for guidance on how to handle disputes. RudolfRed (talk) 23:05, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, but there is a dispute over which of the GRG's sources should be used. Wouldn't the opinion of someone who actually works for the GRG have more weight in this dispute than someone who never worked for it? Futurist110 (talk) 01:25, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is exactly why WP:DR and WP:RS/N and WP:DRN and WP:3O and WP:RFC exist. Get outside opinions from other editors. If it's one editor vs. one editor, then the problem can't be resolved. If it is 20 editors against 1, it starts to be obvious. If one side is clearly in the right based on their sources, WP:CONSENSUS will bear that out. --Jayron32 04:15, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help, Jayron. I will try to follow your advice. Futurist110 (talk) 07:23, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've been following the general case off-wiki (though I don't know all the details of the dispute on-wiki), but a few issues stand out to me. GRG is notable, and treated as a (generally) reliable source by experts in the field. Robert Young is a researcher with them, who is possibly an expert on the subject of Longevity. User:Ryoung122 appears to be topic banned by ArbCom, after a long stretch of incivility and WP:BATTLEGROUND. The original source for the disputed persons' (Hongo & White) inclusion on Oldest people was a page on the GRG website, listing them as unverified candidates for "oldest person". GRG now considers them unverified non-candidates, but hasn't updated their own web page still being cited as evidence for Kamato Hongo and Carrie C. White's inclusion. I don't know that Robert Young (or GRG) can provide substantial proof that Hongo or White didn't live to the ages that were claimed. What they can do, is confirm that they failed to validate Hongo and White's claims. There may be additional evidence beyond that. However, due to existing ArbCom sanctions it may be difficult for some of the GRG people to contribute. I believe the sanctions were for behavior and not for lack of credential. My synthesis may be wildly off-base, but that's what I've seen. It's a pretty kettle of worms. --Robert Keiden (talk) 07:37, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you provide a link? There's actually no rule against IP addresses having user pages, even though they don't have the technical ability to create them. But if a registered user wrote "welcome to my user page" on the user page of an IP address, they might have made a mistake, and perhaps inadvertantly revealed their IP address. Wikilinking newspaper publications

Template:Cite news states author names and publishers can be wikilinked. But what about names of newspapers, journals, etc.? Would there be anything wrong with making these names wikilinked, too? It's something editors preparing FA articles would like specified. (watching the page for a reply)Zepppep (talk) 14:02, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've participated in discussions about this before, but for some reason I can't find them in the archives. My memory is that in the most recent discussion, there was consensus that wikilinks can be used more frequently in references than in an article body, as reference lists are not read in the same manner as prose so there's no concern about low-value links "diluting" high-value links. I think links to journals etc are valuable as they make it easier for readers to find more information about a source and therefore evaluate its credibility. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 14:27, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A-ha, so I'm not the only one who's asked this question (didn't think I was). But perhaps I am the first to ask the specification be noted on the page? Thanks for your reply. It makes sense. And to save editors creating articles and reviewers checking them, the item should be specified to avoid anyone needing to look up the answer in an archive! Zepppep (talk) 14:33, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, though it might be necessary to clarify current consensus before putting anything in a guideline. Wikipedia_talk:Citing_sources/Archive_27#Links_within_citation is the discussion I was involved in, and Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Linking#Repeat_linking_in_reference_sections is the most recent discussion I'm aware of. Note the more permissive view toward such links in the second discussion taken by Tony, who has been instrumental in reducing the number of wikilinks in Wikipedia. Based on a quick look through recent TFAs, it appears such links are permissible but not required. It would be interesting to see whether there'd be consensus for encouraging (though not mandating) their use. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 14:57, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I added "may be wikilinked if relevant" to the periodical documentation. This is in line with the discussions and with other modules of the documentation. The major view is that linking well-known locations, publishers or periodicals is not that useful, but links to little-known elements may be of use. That is probably as definitive an answer as you will get. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 15:18, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I appoligize if it there and we aren't seeing it.My request was for an article to be created about the original 3/4 combat aviation brigade of the 4th inf. divison. Mainly theunits history between 2005-to-2009. Thank you very much I know your time is importan and short when servicing a giant web-based library like wiki and hope to hear back from you soon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.11.114.157 (talk) 07:47, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to ask for an article to be created is at Requested articles - just add your request under the appropriate subheading (in your case, Military and military history). Yunshui  08:05, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want to write it yourself or you want to ask other editors to do this? And which division do you mean: UK or US? Ruslik_Zero 08:16, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Altered a page and can't seem to 'undo' it.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I came across a Wikipedia entry for James Ferguson (astronomer). I assumed that the entry referred to the Scottish astronomer James Ferguson and that therefore the entry was inaccurate. I made some changes based on material from archives but I am now worried in case there was indeed another Scottish born astronomer called James Ferguson and that perhaps instead of editing the entry I should have created a new one. Accordingly I attempted to 'Undo' my changes but without success. I would be very grateful if the page could be reverted to its original state in order that I can create a new page for the James Ferguson to which I referred.

    Many thanks and kind regards,

I see that you have successfully restored the article since posting here. Welcome to Wikipedia - I have left you some introductory links on your talk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:22, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am unable to create a new account.

I wanted to look up some information and evertime I tried to create an a ccount some BS reason came up. The kicker was when the notice called my e mail address invalid. and you don't even have to supply it.It's optional. You people got some glitches to take care of.
