    Accused of copying

I recently received a message from MadmanBot saying that the Wikipedia page I've created was copied, which it isn't. The link sent to me along with the message is from mashpedia and at the bottom under my article on the page it says that the source of the information is from Wikipedia. How do I ensure that this accusation will not result in an automatic deletion? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ShootingStar07 (talkcontribs) 01:07, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is this about VienneMilano? If so, the instructions in the message say to leave a note on the article's talk page explaining why the bot is wrong. RudolfRed (talk) 01:23, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've done that. I've also removed the notice and reported the problem to the bot owner. @ShootingStar, that doesn't mean the article may not be deleted for other reasons (it was speedily deleted once before per A7).--Bbb23 (talk) 01:27, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that regardless of the copyright violation concern, there is no reliable sources to show that this company is notable. Tiggerjay (talk) 03:27, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, in doing a search for reliable sources I couldn't find any so I don't think this has a snowball's chance of surviving a CSD for notability. I am going to boldly move this page over to the user sandbox so it can be worked on there without being lost. I will post a link on the user's talk page. Woolworths Limited

Hello, I supplied some information on Woolworths limited a while back and someone or company have deleted it. The information I listed is 100% correct but Woolworths may not like this information known to the public. I have reloaded the information and if it disappears again I will let you know. The Information was/is: Langtons Wine Auctions Auctioneers and online and telemarketing retailers Dorrien Estate Winery Produced 750,000 cases of wine in 2010. Thank you for wanting to contribute to Wikipedia. Unfortunately I had to remove the changes you just made because they are without a reliable reference/source. Additionally you created redlinks, which are better left off unlinked until those pages are created. Please see WP:CTW for more information on contributing to wikipedia. Just because you know something to be accurate is not sufficient enough for it to be included in wikipedia. If you have more questions, please reply here. Wright Brothers talk page edit

Hello, I just made an edit to the Wright brothers Talk page, but cannot see the rendered text in either Internet Explorer (v8) or Firefox (v18), WinXP. I made the edit as the start of a new Section titled, "Re: proposed edits". The edit does appear in the Talk Page history and the text of the edit can also be seen in the diff. But the actual text of the new section does not show up in the fully rendered page. I also did not see the rendered edit as an addition to the previous Talk section, which is why I made it as a new section. I've never had such an issue before. Can you offer any insight into this problem? DonFB (talk) 05:06, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it. The edit immediately before yours had an incorrectly closed ref tag, it used <\ref> to close instead of </ref> (backslash instead of frontslash). I've fixed the tag and everything should be fine now. --Jayron32 05:15, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Insufficient and/No information regarding Quick Heal Technologies

Hi, I went through your article 'Comparison of Antivirus software' Comparison of antivirus software and I find that there is no information regarding Quick Heal Technologies. However, there is a file carrying an incorrect logo of the company here File:Quick Heal.PNG

I would request you to update the information regarding the company and also use a valid logo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.140.121.78 (talk) 07:01, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search Comparison of antivirus software for "Quick Heal Technologies" and you will find four entries in the table for Quick Heal Technologies. I'll list File:Quick Heal.PNG for deletion. Use of a valid Quick Heal Technologies logo first would require a Quick Heal Technologies article. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 11:54, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mass Turnpike article; History; First fatality on Pike

Growing up I was told my Great Grandfather was the first fatality on the MA Pike; and even still today my family insists this is true. When my Great Grandfather died several articles were written about his death: Here is one of them. He died in Aug of 1957 (Transcription from Boston Herald; Aug 4, 1957)

"RETIRED OFFICER DIES AT WHEEL ON TOLL ROAD" WESTBORO
Aug 3-A retired 30-year-veteran of the Boston Police Department collapsed and died of a heart seizure while driving his automobile on the Massachusetts Turnpike this afternoon. Samuel N. Higgins, 65, of 7 Brookvale st. Dorchester, was with his wife and two daughters when he slumped over the wheel. The car swerved out of control into a guard rail but his family escaped injury. Higgins was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. The retired policeman joined the Boston police in April, 1926, and retired last December 31. He was first stationed in South Boston but spent most of his years with the force with the Back Bay Station."

    — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.96.210.59 (talk) 08:14, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I also have a photo of him, as well as the news article I transcribed above as well as two other obits; one from Daily Boston Globe, and one from Assoc. Press; Springfield Sunday Republican — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.96.210.59 (talk) 08:25, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The above article does not say that Samuel Higgins was the first fatality on the Massachusetts Turnpike. I Googled "First fatality on Pike"[2] and it mentions something about a "It was Albert's first day Retires Cyclist Killed First Fatality on Pike," which does not seem to relate to Samuel Higgins. A general Google search turned up information on Samuel Nathaniel Higgins (1891-1957),[3] but not the first fatality information. If the information is not something published by a Wikipedia Reliable Source, then it could not make its way into the article (e.g., if the first fatality fact is sourced only to your family's oral history, it would first need to be in print in a Wikipedia Reliable Source to be able to add it to the Massachusetts Turnpike article.) Do you have any URL links to articles about Samuel Higgins being the first fatality on the Massachusetts Turnpike? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 11:20, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No I don't as of yet, just my family oral history. I tried doing the same search you did and did not find the source referencing the retired cyclist. I will keep digging :)

    Editing an article

How do I add or delite from an existing article that I did not create? 75.85.191.160 (talk) 14:53, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At the top of every article is a bunch of tabs. One of them says "edit". Click that tab, and you'll be allowed to add text to the article. There's a lot more details at Help:Editing which explain some of the workings of the edit window in more details. The one exception is if the article is if the article is "protected", which is sometimes necessary to prevent people from vandalizing the article (see Wikipedia:Protection policy). If the article is protected, you can use the article talk page to request an edit. Simply click the "Talk" tab at the top of the page, and start a new thread there as you just did here. --Jayron32 15:08, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi,

Is Wikipedia aware of this company?

Almost any image on Wikipedia can be reused, even in print. Check the image page for the license details, most of which only require a link-back to the original image and the full license text. Rmhermen (talk) 18:35, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the image and then read the details of its license. Some of the images on the English Wikipedia are used under 'fair use' arguments and it would be unwise to copy them without being sure how the argument would apply to the new use. The information about the image should make reuse clear (or at least clearer). RJFJR (talk) 20:09, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Almost any image on Wikipedia can be reused, even in print - er no, they cannot. Most if the images hosted at Commons maybe. Most of the images uploaded to Wikipedia are not copyright free or public domain and are uploaded here pursuant to the non-free use criteria.--ukexpat (talk) 21:55, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the images hosted on Wikipedia are non-free, no doubt, but I would interpret "any image on Wikipedia" as meaning "any image used on Wikipedia". I'm pretty sure most people have no idea where the images on (i.e. visible on) Wikipedia are hosted - in fact, from time to time we get a question from somebody who has tried to link an image without uploading it at all. Or do you have statistics that a substantial proportion of the images visible on Wikipedia are non-free? --ColinFine (talk) 23:48, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I download a picture or article so that I can incorporate it with my written Poetry

I would like to write a book to inform readers about a variety of Birds, Clouds, or animals. How can I download pictures to show the reader the actual items I am writing about?67.142.162.21 (talk) 22:19, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can download a picture by using the facilities in your web-browser (for example, on Firefox it is an item on the right-click menu called "Save image as"). It is usually best to click on the image first, to get it in full size and resolution.
You can download an article using your browser as well, but that is not usually useful. Better is either to pick "Print/Export -> Download as PDF" from the tool bar at the side; or you can copy and paste text if you just want some of it.
In general you are allowed use almost all text and many images from Wikipedia for any purpose, as long as you acknowledge the source: the exception is some images which are used in Wikipedia under a fair-use exemption. See WP:REUSE for more information about what you may do and what you must do. --ColinFine (talk) 23:57, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I added the {{dab}}, and it is usually the standard to have only 1 link per entry, so I removed a few. I'm not sure if you want to bold 1 of only 2 people, I'd probably list them both equally. CTF83! 01:16, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both very much. I'd appreciate help with one more thing. I tried adding the template {{other people}} to each of the article pages to direct readers to the disambiguation page, but it doesn't work. It reproduces the full article title in each case, i.e. John Hunt Udall, and John Udall (Puritan). How can I get it to merely state 'For other people named John Udall see John Udall (disambiguation)? Do I just type that out without using a template? NinaGreen (talk) 01:54, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! I see that adding that template to my question above produced an unintended result. :-) NinaGreen (talk) 01:56, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Should I remove redundant reference links?

In Singapore Exchange#Acquisition, the last sentence of the paragraph has four citations, namely 28, 29, 30 and 31. Cite 28 died a while ago, cite 29 is hidden behind a paywall. Cites 30 and 31 are alive and are press releases made directly by the company in question (Singapore Exchange Ltd.). My question is, should I remove the two inaccessible cites (28 and 29) and only keep 30 and 31? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 11:59, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    I guess that you haven't read Wikipedia:Link rot? - David Biddulph (talk) 12:18, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    I wouldn't remove 29 per Wikipedia:PAYWALL; just because you can't access it doesn't mean it is completely inaccessible. - Purplewowies (talk) 12:24, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, ref 28 doesn't look dead to me, unless what it's showing is not what was referenced. - Purplewowies (talk) 12:32, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
From the standpoint of the article, cite 28 is dead, because the cited information is no longer in that location. It is too long ago for me to remember what exactly that source said when I created the citation (I vaguely recall it exactly gave the date of the acquisition and explicitly stated that SICOM had been made a 100% subsidiary of SGX, but I am not sure). However there is no longer an entry at the key developments titled Singapore Exchange Limited Completes Acquisition of Singapore Commodity Exchange Limited, which is the name I gave the citation back then, so I guess there existed an entry under that name at that time. I already tried to contact Reuters and asked them via E-Mail whether that source were still accessible somewhere (or still on their servers at all). Unfortunatly I only received one automatic reply telling me somebody would deal will my request shortly and never heard from them again. I absolutely can't recall the content of the source cited in ref no 29. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 12:42, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The links Purplewowies gave are all good ones. But I thought you might like to see an summary answer as well. The answer is that Wikipedia may have an article about your invention only if several reliable sources, independendent of you (and independent of anybody else associated with the invention) have written about the invention in depth (not just a mention in a list). If it does meet that criterion (which we call "notability") then it may be the subject of an article; but it should not be you that writes the article, because you have a conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 23:46, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think the computing reference desk is probably a better fit from a getting-your-question-in-front-of-people-who-will-likely-know-the-answer perspective, but this particular question fairly squares with the help desk in my view because it's about a file to be used here and about conversion to the file container format we require video files to be uploaded in.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:17, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Eldridge

I would not call Eldridge a suburb. It is a small town. There is a difference. It is really pretty much self-contained. They have 2 banks, doctors, dentists, gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, a high school, an intermediate school, an elementary school, post office, library, hardware store. Churches. Really everything a town needs to survive. It does not have clothing store. It does not have a Walmart...you can get to a Walmart, or other store quicker coming from Eldridge, than one who lives in the city of Davenport, considering driving half way across town with traffic. It has a Mayor, city council, garbage trucks, snow plows....you name it, it is pretty much self-contained. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.167.243.95 (talk) 01:00, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can I See My Reviewing History?

Is there any way I can see a history of the edits I've reviewed? I haven't done many yet, but I was just wondering. Alphius (talk) 01:54, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not 100% sure I know what you're asking. There is no way I know of to find the pages you've "reviewed" in the past, except if what you've viewed is saved in your browser's history tab. However, at the top right of every page there is a link labeled "Contributions" which links to your contribution history where you can look at every single edit you've ever made that has not been to a deleted page (or occasionally hidden from view).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect author bio on a listing with the National Library of Australia

We have been in contact with the National Library of Australia and they have informed us that the incorrect author bio was supplied by you - can you please contact us so that we can make an amendment. regards [details removed] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zeus Publications (talkcontribs) 03:53, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems unlikely that Wikipedia provided any information to the National Library. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.. RudolfRed (talk) 04:19, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not actually true. The National Library of Australia's website sources its biographies from Wikipedia rather than trying to write their own, and many GLAM institutions are going down similar paths. Now, if the problem is that they're linking to the wrong person, that probably requires some co-ordination and working out how they pick which article to use; if, however, it's the right article but with incorrect information, you can either learn how to edit the article to update the information (of course giving appropriate sources to confirm the correction) or provide the sources on the article's talk page and try to get someone's attention (possibly someone who's already contributed to the article) to fix it.
That said, it would be easier to work out how to fix the problem if we know who the author is we're talking about. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 05:22, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a world of difference between "supplied by [[WP]" and "they get it from WP". The former implies that someone at WP selected the article and actively gave it to someone at the library, the latter (and far more likely explanation) is that someone at the library simply selected the wrong article from among the 4 million we have here - without consulting anyone of us (or the Foundation). See WP:N and WP:COI. Your website needs to be notable, and since you have a conflct of interest, you should avoid making the article yourself. If the subject meets the notability guidelines, you can request an article at WP:RA. Wikipedia is not a business directory or advertsing medium. RudolfRed (talk) 04:15, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It should also be pointed out that the articles on Facebook and Lavalife make claims as to why they are notable (the article on Lavalife for example claims revenue of $100+ million). Your article does nothing to demonstrate the notability required to be an article on Wikipedia. Trinitresque (talk) 04:31, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A JAR (file format) is actually a ZIP file that contains an executable which runs in Java. "When a user double clicks on a jar file, the Java runtime environment will open the jar file and run the software that is contained in it rather than list the files that it contains."[5] For more information, see: www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001343.htm - (or there are many other sites). They can be opened with most (if not all) ZIP utility programs. However, another editor familiar with STiki might want to provide more specific information.   ~:74.60.29.141 (talk) 08:41, 30 January 2013 (UTC))[reply]
P.s.: you might have better luck here: Wikipedia talk:STiki
If you are running a Linux based operating system, then you need to open a command prompt and type "java -jar File", so, for example, java -jar /usr/downloads/STiki_2013_01_26 . If you are on windows, make sure you have Java installed. Mdann52 (talk) 13:22, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've not used the sfn template. I am in the process of doing a GA review on Ian Gillan and none of the links from the short citations to the full references are working. I am trying to learn and fix this at the same time. I've read several help pages but can't even find a statement of what is needed ( and needed in the given examples) to make those links work. Could anybody tell me what is missing / wrong that is keeping those links from working at Ian Gillan? Thanks! Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 13:27, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I also haven't wrapped my head around this completely yet. There is an example also using sfn's at Wolstenholme prime. In that article you can see that the first instance of the footnote uses {{Harvnb}}, while every subsequent instance of the footnote uses {{Sfn}}, both wrapped inside <ref> tags. I haven't figured out yet, why it doesn't work in this article, though. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:12, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've found the source of the error, though I'm not sure of a solution. In order to link the sfn template apparently (I am not very familiar either) looks for a date and last name. It occurred to me that since the cite book template to Gillan has a second author, using last2=, sfn might be breaking because it's not matching both last names. Maybe the exact detail of what it looks for is not quite correct but, sure enough, if you remove the second author from the cite book template it fixes the error. However, neither removing the second author from the citation breaking full attribution, nor adding the second author in the sfn template thus substantially enlarging each shortened footnote, feels like quite the correct solution.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:29, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's consistent. Checking my supposition from the other direction, if, instead of removing last2=, you add the second name to the sfn template, i.e., {{sfn|Gillan|Cohen|1993}}, that also fixes the error. Maybe a global search and replace of "{{sfn|Gillan" with "{{sfn|Gillan|Cohen" is the proper route.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:40, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After some searching I think I have guessed what you refer to. http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/5976914 at the National Library of Australia is about the book "Good as Gold" by an author named Ken Mackenzie. If you click his name then content copied from the Wikipedia article Ken MacKenzie is displayed. That article is about another person (a baseball player) with the same name. Wikipedia has no article about the author. The error is not in Wikipedia but in the website of the National Library of Australia. We are not affiliated with them and I don't know how their website works but if they lack information about somebody then maybe they just copy a Wikipedia article and hope it's the right person. I realize it may be frustrating for you that the library and Wikipedia just blame eachother but I really don't see what Wikipedia can do about this. We have more than 4 milion articles and allow others to copy them. Thousands of unrelated websites have copies of Wikipedia articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:19, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    !Voting

What does it mean to !vote? -- YPNYPN 04:06, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's one of our little nerdisms here. The ! is mathematical shorthand for "not": in other words, while you are contributing to a discussion, possibly even taking a position such as "Keep" or "Delete", "support" or "oppose", you are not actually voting on the matter, but rather participating in a discussion striving towards a consensus of the body by use of policy-based arguments, rather than a raw vote count as if you were electing a county clerk by democratic means. --Orange Mike | Talk 04:14, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't call it a 'mathematical' shorthand: the use of a prefixed exclamation mark to indicate negation comes from programming languages such as C. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 09:32, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

but putting a colon after the <br> doesn't do it. Suggestions? Clarityfiend (talk) 05:19, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Then do as you did above: remove HTML breaks and use wiki formatting instead, something like in this diff ... -CiaPan (talk) 06:04, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing edits from article revision history

Is there a way to remove an edit from article revision history? I reverted an edit by an IP user adding external link to a leaked song, as I believe it violates Wikipedia copyright policy. I don't think it's appropriate to keep the link visible there, for anyone to browse. Didn't occur to me when I did the revert, so my question may be a little late. --Sk4170 (talk) 08:17, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can request revision deletion. Roger (talk) 08:40, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why did Wikipedia refused our Article?

    Dear Madam/Sir

    Good day,

My name is Khalida ,and I am representing the famous Chef Osama El Sayed, I think that my request is clear from the subject title , but i just want to add , that a profile under name of Chef Osama El Sayed was added to Wikipedia, before about two years, it was working for only one week after that , it disapeared from the web, would you please tell us what do you want from us to activate that profile.

Here is our web site www.chefosama.com

Your Prompt answer will be highly appreciated — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.200.85.229 (talk) 09:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The previous article was deleted because it was a direct copy of www.chefosama.com/chef_biography.php, which is not released under a free licence. If you wish to use this text on Wikipedia, you will need to arrange for the website to show a disclaimer on the page which releases the text under a CC-BY-SA or similar licence, meaning that anyone, anywhere, can reuse, alter or sell the text, in perpetuity. However, since the deleted text was fairly promotional in the way it was worded, it would probably not be suitable for Wikipedia anyway. If you want to create a new article on Osama El Sayed you may do so, however you will need to provide at least two sources which are unrelated to El Sayed and his business and cover him in detail, in order to meet the basic inclusion requirements. You will also need to read our conflict of interest guidelines, and abide very carefully by Wikipedia's neutrality policy. Yunshui  10:41, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion of Wiki projects

I think a wiki project (Wikipedia:WikiProject Kingdom of Hungary) is unnecesary. We already have a wiki project named Wikipedia:WikiProject Hungary and I don't see why we would create a wiki project for each form of government of a country. Can it be nominated for deletion?

I am also interested if Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries is correctly applied here Talk:Kingdom of Romania. We talk about an existing country, only the form of government has changed TransylvaniaRomania (talk) 10:00, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You could also consider merging the "Kingdom of" WikiProjects into the "main" country projects as Task Forces. That way the work done by the projects won't simply be thrown out but could continue under the "main" project. Roger (talk) 11:35, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is no work done by Wikipedia:WikiProject Kingdom of Hungary. It was created yesterday [8] TransylvaniaRomania (talk) 12:48, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Logo Change

    Good morning.

My company, Select Medical Corporation, underwent a logo change last year and is now known simply as Select Medical (dropping the Corporation). It has been several years since I went through the process of updating a logo (for a different employer...I am new to this company); what is the process for updating the official logo on our wikipedia page which is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Select_Medical_Corporation?

    Thank you for your help.

I replaced it with a screenshot from your company website. For future reference: Click on the logo to go to that image file page and then select 'upload new version of this file' The extension needs to be the same, .png in this case. Rule of thumb is 300-500px wide for fair use images. We may be able to upload a higher resolution image if your legal department agrees that it doesn't meet Threshold of originality in the source country being USA I assume. The original artist/copyright holder can also release it under a 'free licence'. This only effects the copyright of the image and not the trademark status, meaning other companies can't use it to sell similar products/services. Your legal deptartment should be able to explain it better than I.--Canoe1967 (talk) 14:18, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I managed to download the logo from the website and have uploaded in place of the screenshot.--ukexpat (talk) 14:40, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
