Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth each star in several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in the most films in the franchise.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a film franchise and shared fictional universe that is the setting of superhero films independently produced by Marvel Studios, based on characters that appear in Marvel Comics publications. "Phase One" of the franchise featured five films based around individual superheroes, leading up to a crossover in the 2012 film Marvel's The Avengers.[1] The franchise's "Phase Two" will again feature a number of films based on individual properties, culminating in Avengers: Age of Ultron, planned for release in 2015.[2]

As the franchise is composed of films adapted from a variety of Marvel Comics properties, there are multiple lead actors. Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Tony Stark / Iron Man in the films Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), and Iron Man 3 (2013). Chris Hemsworth portrays Thor in both Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013), and Chris Evans portrays Steve Rogers / Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). All three actors star in The Avengers. Chris Pratt is set to portray the lead character, Peter Quill / Star-Lord, in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014),[3] while Paul Rudd will portray the titular character in Ant-Man (2015).[4]

Multiple roles have been recast during the franchise's run. Terrence Howard, who portrayed James Rhodes in Iron Man, was replaced by Don Cheadle, who plays the character in Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. Edward Norton, who portrayed the lead role of Bruce Banner / Hulk in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, did not reprise the role in The Avengers, with the studio citing creative differences.[5] Mark Ruffalo was cast in his place.[6] Josh Dallas, who portrayed Fandral in Thor, could not commit to the sequel due to scheduling conflicts with his television series Once Upon a Time;[7] Zachary Levi plays the character in Thor: The Dark World.[8]

Samuel L. Jackson had cameo and supporting appearances as Nick Fury in several of the early films in the franchise, before costarring in The Avengers. Other cast members who recurred across multiple films and series within the franchise include Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow. Clark Gregg, who portrayed Phil Coulson in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers, also appeared as the character in two Marvel One-Shots short films, and currently stars in the television series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., both of which are connected to the film franchise.[9]

The films feature large, sometimes ensemble, casts of actors and actresses, with several actors portraying key roles in only a film or two, including Hayley Atwell, Jeff Bridges, Rebecca Hall, Anthony Hopkins, William Hurt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Natalie Portman, Jeremy Renner, Sam Rockwell, Tim Roth, Mickey Rourke, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Liv Tyler, and Hugo Weaving, among others.

The list below is sorted by film and the character's surname, as some characters have been portrayed by multiple actors.
