Changing the size of an image

I recently added an image to Pattern Recognition in Physics, however, I wanted to know how I can make it smaller as it seems to be way too big in its current form. I know that with the infobox person template you can just add the image_size parameter, but I tried doing that with the journal infobox and it doesn't seem to work. Quotation

Can someone please take a look at this? [1] As nobody exactly said "educational purposes", is it okay to include "educational purposes" in a quotation? I would argue that a quotation is used to quote what somebody said, not for paraphrasing. What do you think? Timelezz (talk) 07:19, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

I agree, such "scare quotes" should be avoided. However, there is an actual quotation that could be used: "It is a good opportunity to invite our guests to watch. ... RecentChangesLinked

Is it possible to see recent changes in pages in a subcategory using Special:RecentChangesLinked or some other tool? For example, Special:RecentChangesLinked/Category:Wikipedia shows changes to pages in that category only. It doesn't show changes to pages in a subcategory, say for example, Category:Parodies of Wikipedia. See the difference between Special:RecentChangesLinked/Category:Parodies of Wikipedia and the previous link. --Glaisher [talk] 09:11, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Weighting of anonymous contributors' input in RfCs

Is there a policy statement or guideline that discusses how comments made by unregistered participants (that is to say, users posting anonymously from unregistered IP addresses) should be handled in the closure of Request for Comments discussions? I've seen a number of anecdotal comments that say that comments from IP addressses are discounted in RfC closures, but I am not aware that there is any formal rule on which such claims are based. If there isn't any formal rule, is the claim that IP address comments are discounted valid as far as actual practice goes? Dezastru (talk) 15:17, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

It depends entirely on what their comments are. If the comment is a well-reasoned argument based in policy, then it counts just as much as if a seasoned editor made it. IPs are human too, and anyone closing an RFC who discounts an argument based solely on the fact that it was made by an unregistered editor should not be closing them at all. If a registered contributor makes a poorly-reasoned comment that is not based on policy, then a closer would be expected to discount or ignore that comment as well, so from what you are saying there doesn't seem to be any difference between how registered users' comments and unregistered users' comments are supposed to be handled in closures.

Wikipedia:IPs are human too but that doesn't mean that their opinions count in RfCs, unless there is a policy or guideline (not just an essay laying out someone's opinion) that says they should (or should not). Dezastru (talk) 15:51, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Accessing Wiki's Help Desk and the proposed Wiki Amendment pages

1) Please can you tell me how to access, from scratch, the Wiki Help Desk. (After I have logged in, of course.)

2) Please can you tell me how to find the pages on Wiki's current Amendment proposal: (a) the page where the Amendment appears, and (b) the list of comments about the Amendment. Finding these is always hit and miss.

3) Why can I not find the full list of comments on the Amendment any more? There seems to have been a change today in listing these. Yesterday all comments were listed, with an index. There are many ways to get to this help desk. One is to enter "WP:HD" in the search box (any capitalization works). Another is to click "Help" under "Interaction" to the left of any page, and then click one of two "Help desk" links on that page. Main Page also has a link. I don't know which amendment proposal you have in mind but maybe it's listed at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals). Or are you by any chance referring to meta:Terms of use/Paid contributions amendment and it's talk page meta:Talk:Terms of use/Paid contributions amendment? I was going to contact User 38 on his/her talk page, but there I notice he/she is blocked for sockpuppetry. Can one of your administrators undo this move? Hello Jds319. Your attempt to add a reference was mis-formatted, and had the effect of blanking the rest of the content of the page Wikipedia Talk:Articles for creation/Parviz Kambin, so I have removed it. It is not an acceptable reference anyway, because it is a reference to a work by the subject, not writing about him: it is possible that it could appear in a "selected publications" section of the article, but it does nothing to establish that he is notable by Wikipedia standards, which is what is needed at this point. You need to find reliable sources, independent of Dr Kambin which have written at length about him: major newspapers or magazines, or books from reputable publishers. If you cannot find such references, then there cannot be an article about him in Wikipedia, no matter how you write it. Sorry. Tranquil, Mississippi

Hi there, the article "tranquil" redirects to the article "Tranquil, Mississippi". My concern is that some of the redirects really shouldn't, eg. [2]. Should I remove the redirect? Or remove the wikilinks around "tranquil" in the articles it's used in? I don't think a disambiguation page is needed, as there's really only 1 article about Tranquil. Thanks for your advice. False positive duplication

Birth/death dates in article text of subject's parents

Is there a guideline somewhere that says that we should/shouldn't put birth/death dates in the article text of the subject's parents? Something like "John Doe is the son of Joseph Doe (1934-1994) and Jane Doe (1935- )." I know I can be bold and remove such text if I don't like it, so please don't point me to WP:BOLD. I'm just looking for some guideline that says one way or another is preferred. I thought I remembered seeing something like this but I can't recall where. I don't know of any specific guideline on the point. If the dates are cited, or not challenged as inaccurate, then the question would be whether they are relevant to the article on the child. They might well be, if hardly essential. If giving only years they can't possibly assist identity theft, I see no harm that is at all likely. DES ^(talk) 14:41, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Notability of academic journals

Dear editors: I am trying to help a new editor who is creating an article about a journal, the type in which researchers publish their results. I am trying to explain about reliable sources. I thought that I would use as examples a couple of existing journals. Much to my surprise, after looking at 20 or so articles with titles beginning "Journal of...", I am unable to find even one with multiple sources showing that the journal has been written about extensively in other publications. Am I missing something? How can one tell if a journal is "notable"? And if journals are supposed to have external sources, can someone point me to an appropriate example? Essays Wikipedia:Notability (periodicals) and more specifically Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals) (the latter are a subset of the former) may be helpful to some degree. User:DGG might be able to offer some advice. I note that the article on Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the oldest and longest-running scientific journal in the world, is distinctly lacking in significant coverage in independent sources.

Yes, but I wanted to give general advice on notability, so I will refer the editor to Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals). I checked out Nature (journal), and it appears to have plenty of sources, but of the ones that are online, if you discount sources that aren't about the journal, sources that are from the journal itself, sources that are Wikipedia articles, and press releases, there isn't that much left. Nature, being perhaps the most famous journal in the world, has sources, but this is an unusual exception. The GNG simply does not work for this type of material (it also does not work for newspapers and popular periodicals). The usual rule for inclusion is being covered by selective indexes. There is incomplete agreement over which indexes are sufficiently selective, but no journal with coverage in Journal citation Reports has been deleted in the last 5 year sat least. (they are heavily biased against anything that is not a mainstream English language journal from a major science=producing country, and in any case cannot by their very nature include journals with less than two years of publication data, which means that we can not limit ourself to this one criterion.) the journal in question is however very dubious for inclusion on any reasonable criterion: they have so far published only one issue,and are not sponsored by any reputable institution or established publisher. If there were references to it, they'd just be PR. I've commented accordingly. Generally, you don't want to move the talk page by itself. It will move with the main article when that is moved. (well, technically there is a checkbox asking if the talk page should be moved as well)

To answer your question though, you could ask discuss the move with the editor who moved the page. Starting a discussion on the talk page for other editors to see would probably be most beneficial. If you can't move the article back on your own, you could ask an admin to do it at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Though the admin is going to want a well reasoned argument as to why it should be done. Caption layout

Judging by their edit history, I'm assuming they mean the image here. It looks perfectly fine to me; if it's an issue for other users I would suggest just editing the image and adding some whitespace to the sides and refrain from using unconventional templates in actual articles. IMHO a slightly larger image helps - 100px gives 14 lines of text, 130px only 9, so the length is no greater, but the image is clearer and by avoiding one word per line in the caption, the text is more readable. Arjayay (talk) 15:03, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Copy/Import a article from a foreign Wikipedia into English Wikipedia?

I found an article in the German Wikipedia that is about an American Athlete. This article is NOT listed in the English wiki. Can I just copy and paste a google translation of that story? I understand I may need to clean up the English as not everything will translate 100% correctly. I can handle that. What I don't know is if there is different procedure in place for doing this or if there is some method that should be done to cite that this is being taken (more or less) verbatim from the German site? What was that template?

A long time ago, I stumbled across a template that could be used to display content with a border and caption very similar to image formatting. This was not a quote template like {{quote box}}, though the formatting was very similar. You could use it around latex, IIRC, though I failed to use it for a {{clade}}-based tree (I didn't know of {{cladogram}} at the time). Franksaid, you would remove the notice by deleting {{refimprove|date=February 2014}} near the top of the article. However I see that all but one of the added citations are to The Westport Library 1908-2008 Century Report, which looks as if it might not be independent of the library, and the other is to a grant notice from the "Institute of Museum and Library Services". Such notices often draw heavily on the grant applications drafted by the institutions applying for grants. Any additions clearly independent sources would be welcome. I created a book but it has disappeared!

How can I find a book that I started to compile intending to print it through Wikipedia. My book was entitled : My Magical Garden in Kuwait. I have read/searched the FAQ but I can't find out how long a book will be saved for . I had been adding to the book over the period of a few months and then I left the project and now i can not locate it in my account.. I hope someone can guide me retrieving the book..

Hi Radioriot; so first of all you should know that no one owns any Wikipedia page. Wikipedia pages can be edited by anyone and no one person has control over any article. Since the page appears to be being vandalised by multiple IPs, you should make a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection for the page to be semi-protected. This will stop anyone without an autoconfirmed account from editing the page. Currently that would include yourself, but once you've had the account for 4 days and made 10 edits you'll be autoconfirmed. Lastly you should read the Conflict of Interest guidelines, which outline why it's generally a bad idea to work on articles you're related to or being paid to work on. Query re Revision History pages

I notice that although two small edits I made this week to two Wiki articles have obviously been accepted (because the current Wiki articles appear with those edits), they are listed in the Revision History pages for those articles with "(undo)" beside them. Indeed. And your edits have not "been accepted", in any active sense. It's just that no-one has seen fit to revert or change them. I had a quick look at your edits to articles myself, and found four. Three were, in my view, clear improvements. One I considered a change very slightly for the worse, but certainly not to the point where I will do anything about it. Well, I fixed the references format issue. You had the {{reflist}} template in the right place but you were trying to call a reference after that. All references must be before the reflist. But you still have not provided references to secondary sources which show that the people are notable per Wikipedia's guidelines. Someone keeps maliciously changing her birthdate on her Wiki page to attempt to reflect her to be 5 years older than she really is. She was born in 1962, and this is supported by her California Drivers License.

Lauren has competitor interests that are trying to keep her from being successful with her own line of National Fitness Competitions, and we believe they are changing the date to sabotage her and adversely affect her TV, Film and commercial bookings in Hollywood.

How can we permanently change the Wiki entry to reflect the birth year of 1962, and NOT 1958 that it keeps getting changed to? Having problem with figuring out a game

In pajama Sam thunder and lightning been tried over and over. The T part gets stuck in the vending machine tried getting can of earth quake opening and throwing it at vending machine. It shakes and acts like it's going to come out and stays stuck. Won't come out. Can u tell us how to get that part out of vending machine please. Finding the culprit on a page with hundreds of transclusions

At requested moves there is one request out of a few hundred that is transcluding one or more ref tags, causing the project page to display a cite error message at the bottom of a missing reflist. If nothing is done it's not that big a deal; within a week or two it will fall out in the natural course as requests are closed. But I was wondering if anyone can think of a way to easily find the culprit – that is, something less stupidly mechanical and laborious than opening up a few hundred requests to find the offending member.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:15, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Wait, I think it did work. When I search the current discussion page for ref tags I find them in that discussion in noinclude tags, so then I backtracked and saw you did not edit that page but the discussion page, which means the bot successfully incorproated your edits on its run. So, why is the error tag still showing? Lo and behold, when I search current discussions I find that there is a second discussion with a ref tag (conspiring to confound us). (←) The bot doesn't use transclusion to create the current discussions list, so hiding with noinclude tags won't work. You can either pull the {{Reflist-talk}} inside the proposer's signature, and thus include the refs on the RM/CD page, or pull the citations outside the proposer's signature, so that they are an additional comment by the proposer in support. What to do?

Some IP's (in a range that is blocked) warned me on my Talk page about a user that allegedly was previously "lying" and "discrediting" other users. The user that was under question, removed the info from my talk page. But I presume that it is my talk page and no one else is removing text. While I do not support what the IP's wrote (meaning, that I did not even considered it interesting enough to start an inquiry) I consider it as just a point of view. But the user that is bespoken of, argues it is a personal attack and requests me coercively to remove the text. I would like to know whether someone is free to remove personal attack from other's Talk page. And whether I need to give in to the request. Or what other road would be best to follow. I do not like to hear bad talk about other users, but I can imagine cases where it is desirable that users inform about other users. And I like to retain a level of freedom of speech as well. Timelezz, WP:NPA and the related WP:RPA do apply to all discussion pages, including your user page. Whether a particular statement is a personal attack is a judgement call depending on the circumstances and context, but a statement such as you describe quite possible qualifies. you could edit the statement to change "User:Example tells lies" to "User:Example [has made inaccurate statements]" (or something of the sort) with the square brackets indicating that the original wording has been altered. If the original comment included on-wiki links (or better diffs) I see no reason why those would need to be deleted or redacted. I will say that unless you were interacting or likely to interact with "User A" it would be rather uncivil of "User B" for no obvious reason except to harm User A's reputation. (edit conflict) Click "Contributions" at the top right to see your edits. In [3] you removed {{AFC submission|...}}. This removed the box with the link you need to resubmit the article. An editor has restored the box so you can resubmit when you are ready. Another has added {{reflist}} so your references are displayed. I suspect that originally you clicked "Submit your draft when you are ready for it to be reviewed!" before having saved the draft. This meant your original draft was lost. Large Blank Space After Moving Text for Eleonora Abbagnato

Hi,

I did a bit of cleaning up of the entry on Eleonora Abbagnato which had some problems with English usage. I also moved the information about her marriage into a separate paragraph from the rest of the entry which focused on her professional career. Somehow, this created a large blank space between these final two paragraphs and I can't seem to make it go away. Can you fix it please?

Luca Valerio

In reading your documentation on Valerio, you mention he left the Accademia dei Lincei because of fear of the Inquisition. There is no mention of his relationship with Margherita Sarrocchi which some say is a major reason in his decision. I am wondering if more investigation should be made in this area.

You can freely release a photo following the procedures at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. However, there is no guarantee that the image will then be used in the article. the editors decide what is appropriate. Misstake in table on Mobile telephony in Africa

This is supposed to be a table on the 10 main mobile telephony providers in Africa, it has 11 entries and one of them, Airtel, is clearly wrong, the percentages does not add up and there is no mention of Airtel in the source that is referenced. Editing Gas Detector

Hi I have just submitted an edit for the subject of Gas detector.

I received a warning listing about my edit. As this is my first time ever making an edit like this I am not sure if it is a standard procedure or if I have genuinely done something wrong. I have referenced and linked to an article that I wrote on our web page on the topic. However before I did this I checked a couple of other references on the page and they linked to websites. Could it be the original article was going to be a blog but I have changed it to be a static page on our website. I think the URL still mentions blog but not sure how to remove it?

Before I continue I would like to make sure I am doing the right thing.

@AegisSafety: Your edit triggered an edit filter and was not saved. You should have seen MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-links-containing-username. Hi KaivalyaNagavekar. There is no automatic translation between languages. You can search the language links on the left hand side of any page to see if there is an article in the Marathi Wikipedia (mr:मुखपृष्ठ) but there is none for Vaisakhi. This really only leaves you with looking for information from some other website or source in Marathi. You could use Google Translate to view a machine translation of the page from English into Marathi (see here) but machine translations are notoriously poor.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:33, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

I always see Wikipedia as the highest source of information in any subject. But when I was reading the list of Hindu gurus and saints I failed to see the name of his holiness Sri Chandrasekerendra Saraswati (paramacharyal) who the people of South consider as the holiest sage lived in the last century. Being the greatest devotee of him and many people from South being highly devoted to him on behalf of all I put this request to you please add his name in the list.

Paid editing

I am a professional copy-editor for organizations that do not have native English writers. I would like to offer my services to organizations that have Wikipedia entries which are not well-written. My latest contribution to Wikipedia (external links)

Dir Sir/Lady,

I had a previous communication with Osrarius regarding my latest contribution to Wikipedia via external links I added to LifeMap Discovery database (http://discovery.lifemapsc.com/). Since Osrarius seems not to be active these days, I would like to address this issue here with you. In brief, I noticed that all the external links I put during last month were removed by him, apparently because of conflict issues.

I would like to kindly clear this matter with you:'LifeMap Discovery database', is an novel up-to-date database that integrates multiple scientific areas such as developmental biology, stem cells and regenerative medicine which is reviewed constantly by a group of qualified scientists all over the world. Our intention is to provide additional valuable information to Wikipedia users about relevant subjects (e.g., links for human organ/tissue development and more).

Nevertheless, LifeMap people have been in dialog with WikiPedia about contributing content and imagery to expand upon developmental biology subjects.

If such a contribution as the external links seems to be problematic, I would like to kindly ask what is the best way we should approach it.

Well, it looks like the article is repeated twice so cut back to only one, the citations do not have enough enough information (publication date , author - the "cite" widget above the editing box can help with that formatting). The section titles "Format" and "Music" are not intuitive to me and after reading them, seem to serve more of an advertisement than encyclopedia coverage, which would focus more on history and impact. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:43, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Felllatio pictures

I'm rather liberal, but you may not be aware of the photo's on the Wikipedia page "Fellatio". The scientific and legal definitions are OK it's the drawings that you might want to examine for appropriateness. I would think from the definition of the word fellatio one would understand its a verb describing a sexual act. I know some of the photos are artistic expressions, but is this the place to post these and are they necessary? (Question about editing) "Categories Box"

While I was researching methods for adding categories to pages I came across something on Help:Category that I was hoping someone could clarify. It's the last sentence of the fourth paragraph in section "2 Putting pages in categories", and it states:

"The categories box also provides links to quickly add, remove, or modify category declarations on the page, without having to edit the whole page"

These links/tools sound like they'd be very helpful to editors, but after looking at dozens of pages I just can't seem to locate any examples of them. So my guess is that either: A) I'm looking in the wrong place; B) there's something wrong with my account (or browser) that is preventing the links from being displayed; or C) the links were part of the Categories Box template at one time but have since been removed — and the Help page just hasn't been updated yet to reflect it.

The help page is referring the section at the bottom (usually) of any page that is in a category (including this page, see the Categories below). The help page is, I will admit, misleading, because without enabling the HotCat gadget, you cannot edit categories directly from that box, you can only do so with the article in edit mode.--ukexpat (talk) 16:11, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Trouble editing normal text near foreign-language text

In Taher Saifuddin, I wanted to edit the date information after the foreign-language representation of his name, changing "born on 4th August 1888" to "4 August 1888 – 12 November 1965". When I attempt this, the "4" ends up in front of the foreign characters. I have tried the normal editor, wikED, and AWB, and it always gets corrupted. What gives? Interviews..... Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Tony Grey

After a few months away, I have decided to take another crack at an article submission after it was declined due to inadequate sourcing. I had sources, but the Wikipedia editor said since they came from interviews they were not objective. (Though I did not quote the artist in any of them, only the bio material that was in the stories.) Out of curiosity, I looked up several other contemporaries of my subject on Wikipedia. Without exception, they all used "interviews" of the subject as sources. In some cases, interviews were used only. Did I receive a tougher editor or is there a rule that interviews cannot be used as source material even though these other entries were allowed? I find myself in a situation in which there is plenty of material, but like many human subjects of interest, it is all found in stories that include interviews. Please advise. Thanks. (P.S. I was rusty when I went back into the article and couldn't seem to remember how to insert a new source properly. It is there in the text, but does not show in the draft for some reason.)

The issue isn't that the source is an interview per se - it is in a reliable source - but that the draft needs more references from reliable sources. At the moment the interview is the only secondary source.--ukexpat (talk) 16:32, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

The idea of this project was first suggested by a fan of Led Zeppelin while Robert was on tour during The Fate Of Nations in January 1994. The Mexico show was the last night and while the audience applauded that, Plant responded negatively having a deep desire to continue performing. He was at the end of his solo run. The fan was staying at the same Hotel as Plant in Mexico City met up with him 3 times. They discussed why the fan had traveled from Maryland USA to the show and Plant expressed interest in his Led Zeppelin necklace the "Hermit" among other things Zeppelin. Over breakfast the day after the show the fan expressed a concern and an idea about Plant's next project. While Plant was at first reluctant about the suggestion he made a promise to the fan. A copy of the handmade Hermit necklace for a phone call to Jimmy. Hands shuck. This call quickly led to the fan hearing on the radio back in the States that Plant and Page were in the studio recording. Ten year later the fan on Father's Day delivered the necklace to Security who delivered it to Plant. Plant wore the necklace that night for the Strange Sensations at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. Promises kept by fan and legend! The 2 albums and tours were a great hit to many fans who never saw Zeppelin. [3]

Someone is sabotaging my page

Someone is purposefully sabotaging my wiki page.. this is the second time I have had to correct the changes made. The statements are harmful and derogatory statements.

How can this be monitored and corrected? I would hate to have to remove my page permanently. I value the service and information your organization provides.
