Font specimens

How do you create them?--Kopiersperre (talk) 20:50, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It's quite easy. I tend to do it simply in Microsoft Word. I use the layout of GearedBull as here (I think he has stopped editing Wikipedia mostly), but creating my own templates from coloured text boxes. (These tend to vary a bit from font to font for me unlike for him.) Then export to pdf, crop and conversion to .png. Up till now I have mostly created pictures for individual font articles but I have tried recently to create some for individual designers who have designed enough fonts to make it worth it-so for Lange, Goudy and Novarese among others. Blythwood (talk) 20:59, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for information. Sadly I'm on Linux and looking for a way to create SVG font specimens. I will try to ask GearedBull.--Kopiersperre (talk) 16:40, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I can't help. I believe he used Quark, but I can't remember where I saw that. Blythwood (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Joanna at DHS

Per the DHS Seal and Signature Usage Guidelines, the official typeface of DHS is Joanna MT. Also, it's even disputed in reply tweets by two other type designers in the tweet that was linked. --TUFKAAP (talk) 15:12, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@TUFKAAP: Good catch! Added that to both pages. No question that the seal itself is Scala Bold though - while they look similar in general Joanna's P and R look quite different. Blythwood (talk) 15:25, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Padbury Brook

Hello, Blythwood. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Padbury Brook".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at WP:REFUND/G13. An administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. RichT|C|E-Mail 11:35, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of CA Immo

The article CA Immo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Immofinanz, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:05, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Pictures

Hi Thank you for your recent edit to the page Melvin Moss. I'm still trying to learn how to make the articles much better. I've created 40 or so articles about the biographies of many Orthodontists in the past. There are many pictures I know which are available out there but I feel that adding pictures through Wikipedia is a very tedious job. Do you have any recommendations? I'd love to add pictures to each article I've created, as I am a firm follower of Wikipedia Dentistry Project and want to create more articles on Dentistry. Thank you

@Hgcool23: Hi! Actually I was just reading the article and wanted to help so I googled Dr. Moss and found there was a picture of him already on here. I don't really know anything about dentistry. My recommendation is the main thing you want to do to make really good articles is citation - just make sure you use the 'cite' option at the top of the edit window to give sources a title, source and a refname which means you can use the same source in multiple locations. That and citing Dr. Moss's most notable papers and any textbooks he wrote in the article would be great. But I actually don't write new pages that much - try running drafts past the Teahouse project before you submit them and they can often suggest improvements. Hi there,

Thanks for your comments on my french to english translation of a french athletic stadium

Apparently this has been done before - look at the case of Joyce Hatto (New Yorker feature) - but seriously I can't believe the amount of work this must have taken to organise. I really hope we don't see more like this. Also, check out the latest update from this fine artiste's twitter feed: 'Happy ☺️'. Aren't we all. Blythwood (talk) 23:06, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've written a Facebook message to https://www.facebook.com/reese.cromwell to alert her about the situation. There doesn't appear to have been much real activity on the Facebook page however, the last pretty picture was posted in August, so she might not read it. I didn't find any obvious place on Spotify (or their web-pages) to report it, only a form to report if my copyrights had been violated. I believe the Twitter account you linked to was the same I checked an hour ago, no? Seems to have been emptied, and what happended to all the followers?... --NorwegianBlue talk 23:58, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit of the photo does not make the picture clearer as it is now very small. On the Italian page it is a panorama but I am unsure how to set that up here. Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 20:43, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Roundtheworld: - I can't remember what the policy is on this but I know it's preferred not to make a full-size image display on the English wiki as the header image for an article. See Castle Square, Warsaw and Piazza San Marco as examples of this. I think the problem is that setting a specific image size doesn't work for people viewing the article on unusual display sizes. Maybe put in another image (like the one on itwiki) as header and the large one lower down? St. Peter's Square article has a panorama and it's a good example of that - the header image is normal size. Blythwood (talk) 20:59, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lactopontin

Thank you very much for your attention on Lactopontin. Its great to see people working and caring! I put the stub up at the request of another collaborator who is going to be adding a bunch of content to it soon (hopefully this weekend). Per your specific question, the name is not a trade or company name, but a name that is gaining preferred use in the scientific community for the particular protein secreted in milk, derived from SPP1. The protein is currently universally confused with the systemic protein Osteopontin derived from the same gene, but with a myriad of post-translational structure and physiologic functional differences. I've spoken with some of the researchers at UC Davis and UC Illinois who have agreed to add some of their most recent work that show why this is an important distinction. 17:56, 15 January 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biotech5771 (talkcontribs)

Re: A page you started (Giuseppe Concone) has been reviewed!

Thank you for helping fill it out. My practice is to bring anything over to Wikipedia which I find in my travels through old encyclopedias on Wikisource which seems notable and not already there. The New International Encyclopedia seems to be a particularly rich source, as is Appletons' Cyclopaedia of American Biography. Library Guy (talk) 18:31, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My article on Scan-A-Line is not promotional. It is an encyclopedic article about how that type of technology works.

Blythwood:

You have flagged my article on Scan-A-Line technology for deletion because you believe it to be promotional. It is not a promotional article, but an explanation of how a fascinating technology works. However, the following article on Kleenex fits your description of a post eligible for speedy deletion because it absolutely promotes a brand: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleenex.

Somebody doing research on non-contact measurement and guiding technology will find my article most intriguing.

Additionally, you did not state the reason for your action. You said "for several reasons" but failed to mention even one. Your decision appears to be arbitrary. If you have additional questions, please contact me, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

esyN page

Dear Blythwood

I am still in the process of updating the esyN page. To support the fact that esyN is a widely used resource I have mentioned the fact that its been used by large databased like flybase and flymine and Intermine and pombase to display their data (i.e. esyN is embedded in their websites and used to display their data!) These are quite large websites and I believe this should warrant the status of notable or not ? I have added a section called embedded where I have added these details. At the moment esyN is being used by roughy 16700 unique users per month according to google analytics - how do I make a proper reference to this data ? Should I use an image from google analytics ?

Also, I know of other research groups (unrelated to me) currently submitting manuscripts that use esyN - but these articles have not been published yet..

what do you suggest ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Favrin (talkcontribs) 15:48, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Font samples template

Hello! Recently I found that many of font specimen, like this image, were created by you. I want to do the same job with Cyrillic glyphs, since I participate in Russian Wikipedia and Latin samples are not very useful. The design of these cards is very nice, and I wanted to ask you, does some kind of template exist? Maybe it is possible just to switch the font in it for each sample? And what kind of software do you use for it? — Euref (talk) 01:37, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Euref: - ah, it's horribly simple. Since I want software that I am used to and I can get easily I just use Microsoft Word, assembling together the image from text boxes. Then export to pdf and crop, then export to image. Not a great system, but I'm not a professional graphic designer and it works. I style my images on the great work of GearedBull, who is no longer using Wikipedia; he did his in Quark Xpress I believe. For the Bembo image, I actually took one of his images (of the same font but a worse digitisation of it) and slowly substituted the font samples for mine bit by bit. I'm not sure this is the best way to do it though! Blythwood (talk) 12:25, 11 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

William Edward Fraser

Hi there. Bill Fraser is running on a never before attempted platform in a very sought after seat in Illinois's 8th congressional district. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vote4fraser (talkcontribs) 05:46, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Vote4fraser: - sure, but what matters is sources, though you have added some. In addition, parts of the article read as promotional, which isn't right for Wikipedia. I would finish the article and add anything you need to quickly, as you're technically breaking the rules on usernames. Wikipedia usernames aren't allowed to sound promotional or belong to an organisation rather than a specific person, so you may get blocked quite soon automatically and asked to reregister. Blythwood (talk) 05:51, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Blythwood I see... in what way is it promotional? Everything added to the article is fact and plays into the campaign he is running on. Vote4fraser (talk) 05:54, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"Fraser explained that he is not keeping his salary because he wants voters to know he is doing this for the right reasons" sounds promotional. Blythwood (talk) 05:57, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Blythwood It is straight out of both cited press releases, included in one of the cited news papers, and is included in the cited webpage from the official campaign website. It may sound promotional, but it's a large facet of the platform he is running on. Vote4fraser (talk) 06:00, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A7 speedies

Hey, I had to decline the speedy for Race Wars story since it's a book series, as book series can't fall under A7. The series is definitely non-notable, but it's one of those tricky areas where I had to decline it based on a technicality. I've nominated it for AfD, if you want to weigh in there. • No worries - no major harm done and ultimately the article really is non-notable, so it'll get deleted one way or another. We've been trying to figure out a way to write a speedy criteria for books for a while now, but there's no truly good way to go about justifying it. Hello this is Jaron. This organization is a company that has been started by well known members of the beatbox community. They have made a name for themselfs as a company having promoted and trained some well known iconic beatboxers and vocalists. Alot of the artists in the organization are world championship beatboxers and have performed with big names such as Cee Lo Green,Doug E Fresh,Biz Markie and Reggie Watts. Some of them have even been featured on the pbs television show "the electric company". I am not a member of the organization so this is not self promotion.

Hey. Thanks. Most welcome to add references. Initally all I could find was people quoting her as a gothic writer. And Yes...the quote about being a key author was from the reference given at that point but apparently I forgot to finish saying that. I'm afk but when I'm back I'll add that. 🍺 Antiqueight chat 10:02, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Antiqueight: - no problem! It's just the kind of overarching statement I realised I had to watch out for making myself when writing undergraduate essays! Incidentally, the Perils of the Night book does look quite interesting as a brief commentary on her work, if you hadn't already seen it. Baker also describes her work as modelled on Sophia Lee's The Recess which might be a good topic to go down if you were looking for a way to expand the article... Blythwood (talk) 19:26, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You have the advantage of me there - I never had such essays - I am making this all up as I go - v. different from my forte of maths and physics and such like. Honestly, I have no idea how to expand the article other than the basic facts and a little colour where I can find it. But many people seem to have studied her work especially in relation to the development of the gothic novel and the implications of the Act of Union on gothic novels (in Ireland) in general...There was(brain not remembering) also another writer listed as someone who might have influenced her as well, another work that hers could be borrowing from. But how much to say and how much is me writing an essay on a writer I haven't read..I am more than willing to take instruction on the idea.... 🍺 Antiqueight chat 22:15, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
