    Burly

I just wanted to say burly is a word, though it's not in your dictionary. Look it up in a real dictionary. It means sturdy, corpulent.02:38, 25 July 2017 (UTC)02:38, 25 July 2017 (UTC)~~

Hello IP 75.154.116.253. You used too many tildes, which is why your signature didn't work. Four is the magic number.
It isn't clear what you mean by "your dictionary". Wikipedia doesn't have a dictionary. Maybe you mean Wiktionary, which is a separate project, but burly definitely has an entry there (which is unsurprising because it is a real dictionary). RivertorchFIREWATER 06:01, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible that the IP is referring to the fact that WikiP does not have an article titled Burly. That is not surprising since, as Rivertorch points out, this project is not a dictionary. MarnetteD|Talk 13:12, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Galactikapedia, It didn't say that you have been restricted, but that the proposed article title had been. This is often done when an article has been repeat4edly recreated against consensus, and for other reasons. it is known as "salting". DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:04, 25 July 2017 (UTC) @Galactikapedia: DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:04, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It was a problem with MediaWiki:Titleblacklist, which prevents people from creating pages with titles that meet certain patterns. At 2:41, an administrator meant to remove a line entirely, but he accidentally left a metacharacter there, and the way the blacklist works, this metacharacter qualifies as an indefinite number of actual characters. If you have nothing but this character, literally everything is blocked, so until the mistake was resolved, it was absolutely impossible for anyone (except admins, to whom the blacklist doesn't apply) to create any page whatsoever. Nyttend (talk) 03:20, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Galactikapedia, it seems that you have been creating lots of pages, all redirects. over 500 of them in the last day or so. Would you care to explain what you are doing? DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:08, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@DESiegel: Just looking at the last 10 or so redirects, they look fine to me - net (albeit small) positives. If you have noticed a pattern of policy-violating redirects, surely a discussion/warning is needed, but otherwise, I do not see that Galactikapedia really has to justify why they chose to work in this area. My $0.02 would be that they want to lower the number in the {{User article count ranking}} template on their userpage, but I do not see that as a problem if the end result is improving the encyclopedia. TigraanClick here to contact me 11:29, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say that s/he had to justify it, Tigraan, I merely asked. However WP:MASSCREATION does suggest that such rapid semi-automated page creations need advanced approval. If you will look at User talk:DESiegel#Follow-up to message on help desk you will see an argument being made that such redirects are in fact unhelpful, and another that circular redirects are disfavored. Galactikapedia, I would ask that you discuss this a bit further before continuing with this pattern of editing. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 12:22, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    aditing of an existing page

I edited twice the page antidepressant discontinutaion syndrome but the creator of the page deleted both times my editing. The last time I also received an email from wikipedia saying that I uploaded material covered by copyright (while the paper I quoted are open source) and I used primary sources, however this is not the case since I used secondary sources and I modified the source before uploading it. In particular, apparently the creator of the page does not want to have the paragraph "diagnosis" which, according to me, is important since it represents a step forward the knowledge of the syndrome and is an issue which has been described in the scientific literature via a review article. Please let me know what to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Papilio2017 (talkcontribs) 03:34, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Papilio2017 "Open source" does not mean "public domain". Open source papers are generally covered by copyright, and may be under a license not compatible with Wikipedia's. Besides, even public domain text must be properly attributed and cited.
This entire matter should be discussed on Talk:Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome, which does not seem to have been done, yet. Please do not reintroduce the text deleted as a copyright violation without discussing it there and with Hut 8.5, the deleting admin. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 07:52, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How can I contribute to Wikipedia with small contributions?

I am looking for a routine to apply daily to contribute to Wikipedia. Something small, easy and simple. Translating an entire article, for instance is too much for me. Appeal to correct erroneous information in the entry for the movie PET https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_(film)

Error: Protected edit requests can only be made on the talk page.

    Dear Editor:

I am writing to seek a correction on a claim in the entry for the 2016 movie Pet (film).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_(film)

Issue #1: The Wikipedia page currently states: Pet “is the lowest-growing theatrical release of 2016 with a total gross of $70 and is the second lowest grossing film ever released.” The source linked to is Box Office Mojo, which is the leading online box office reporting service. However, this link does not support the claims made in the entry. In fact, a search of 2016 films on Box Office Mojo, shows that Pet had a total gross of $8,004 AND was ranked 663 out of 736 in terms of gross box office earnings of films released in that year alone.

    <source> http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=pet2016.htm

Issue #2: The entry goes on to state: “However, the $70 figure has been disputed by the director, Carless Torrens.” As noted above, both the $70 figure and the “second lowest grossing film ever released” claim are both clearly and demonstrably inaccurate. To simply repeat the errors and note the director’s objections is misleading. Additionally, this sentence misspells the director’s first name. We appreciate your prompt attention to this issue. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have additional questions or we can be of any further assistance in clarifying this matter.

Sincerely, Carles Torrens— Preceding unsigned comment added by Carles Torrens (talkcontribs) 22:57, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Carles Torrens, you've already made this request at the article's talk page. The template you've used, {{request edit}} means that it is put in a special category, which other editors can look at and make the edit for you, so you don't need to ask again here. This is why I've changed the template above. As you've used the {{request edit}} template, which is for editors with COIs, I've left a message on your talk page about conflicts of interest.  Seagull123  Φ  23:30, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Oleg Bezuglov - <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/> in the code

    Hello,

I am trying to figure out the reason for the <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/> in the page source code of Oleg Bezuglov. The article was patrolled and reviewed, but still has this meta parameter. The article was nominated for deletion shortly after it was created, and I assume that it might have been a reason for the meta tag to appear in the first place. Subsequently, the AfD was resolved with keep. I would appreciate your input! --Fiddler11 04:19, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Alignment of quote box

I've been trying to improve the layout of Weedville, Arizona. It has a block quote using template quote box. If I use the "center" alignment, it seems to center it within the width of the page, even though there is an infobox on the right. With this alignment, the quote box doesn't look good abutting the infobox. If I use the "left" alignment (as it is presently), the box is moved to the left as expected and text is allowed to flow into the space between the quote box and the infobox. This can be OK with a wide enough screen, but if I reduce the width of the window, it get to a point were it doesn't look good at all, with lines with one or two words. At one width, the letter "A" is all that is between the boxes. Is there a better alignment method? MB 04:52, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The block quote box was highly inappropriate, since it wasn't even about the town; so I simply removed the box and left the text as normal text (but gave the chapter and verse). --Orange Mike | Talk 05:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can the categories displayed at the bottom of an article differ from the categories that include the article?

I've recently been categorizing articles on biological taxa by their Linnean rank and geologic age, so, for example if you wanted to know what families of living things were alive right before or after the extinction that killed the dinosaurs, you could respectively visit Category:Maastrichtian taxonomic families or Category:Danian taxonomic families.

The problem is that while most taxa were reasonably short-lived, some lasted a very long time. For instance the species Triops cancriformis first evolved during the Norian age of the Late Triassic and persists to this very day, passing through roughly 40(!) geological ages that it would need to be categorized under (most species go extinct within one or two ages). I've just been tolerating the need to heavily categorize the odd exceptionally long-lived taxon, but other users have reasonably objected to the large numbers of categories those articles required.

So, for our buddy Triops is there any way I could, say, include it in those 40 categories but have the category section at the bottom of the page only display links to "Category:Norian species first appearances, Category:Rhaetian species, Category:Jurassic species, Category:Cretaceous species, and Category:Cenozoic species"? Abyssal (talk) 14:46, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Abyssal. WP:HIDDENCAT certainly exist, but whether it is appropriate to use them for this purpose or not, I'm not sure. I'm a little concerned that this work is original research, as you are implicitly adding information to the articles which is not directly in the sources. What do others think? --ColinFine (talk) 15:44, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hidden cats are kind of like what I mean, but that would hide it across very article that uses the category. I only want to hide categories situationally on articles about long-lived taxa that would become cluttered by the large numbers of geological age categories they require. I don't understand the comment about original research. All of my categorization was based on information already in the articles. Abyssal (talk) 16:04, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Those concerns have been brought up by a few editors at the articles in addition to the category overkill. The general issue is that we already often have a category for "group arising in X age", but listing all the categories when it was extant whether hidden or not seems to be setting up cumbersome additions to categories. It has been suggested that articles stick to just when a group arose and when it became extinct for two categories at most. The kind of things being proposed by Abyssal probably needs some higher level consensus than just individual talk pages, but I'm also not sure where such a discussion would be most appropriate in terms of Wikiprojects, etc. Kingofaces43 (talk) 17:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Categorization is a way to add structured data to Wikipedia, but it is fairly crude. You may find it more useful to add information to Wikidata instead. Wikidata is designed for this purpose, and allows for sophisticated data manipulation. -Arch dude (talk) 20:45, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia page for our organization - non-profit, for academic institutions

    Hello,

Our group, Technology Transfer Partners, recently had our page deleted (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_Transfer_Partners). I understand you do not want to promote businesses or other blatantly for-profit pages, but our group consists solely of universities, colleges, and K-12 institutions from around the world sharing information about the use of technology. Membership and conferences are free of charge.

Yes, we share the use of one company's products - Micro Focus - BUT we are not paid by them. They sponsor our meetings but do not control their content. Our group is independent. (https://thettp.org/) And although we do like their technologies, we are quite vocal about flaws, and actually have input to the engineers to express these opinions. In addition, we discuss numerous technologies and software solutions being used by our members, not just those made by Micro Focus. Our lists are full of questions asked and answered by our members, so it is a great source of help on a variety of topics.

We would really appreciate being visible to other schools to which we could be of help. We will have collaborators on editing the page, but first our page has to stay up!

Thank you for your consideration. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

    Kborecky (talk) 15:19, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kborecky. I'm afraid that, like many people, you misunderstand the purpose of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not for you (or anyone) to promote you - it makes no difference whether you are commercial or non-profit: Wikipedia is not for putting information about you out to the world, it is for summarising information which people who have no connection with you have already chosen to publish. If there is material about you, written and published (in reliable organs) by people who have no connection with you, then there can be an article about you, summarising what those independent sources say. (If there is little or no such material, then no article will be accepted, however it is written). It will not be your article, and you will have no control over the contents or presentation: your involvement will be limited to suggesting improvements, for others to decide upon. Please read WP:ORG and Your first article. --ColinFine (talk) 15:49, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    The google search summary

I know google search pulls info from wikipedia for the panel on the right of the screen, taking a selection of google images and a summary of the lede from wikipedia (where it is the highest ranking site) BUT if I google for example 'Jeff Forshaw' it comes up with his images and name, and then under it it says 'British author', does anyone know where it is pulling that information from? whilst he has co-authored books, I never referred to him on his page as an author, and really that summary should say 'British scientist' or at least 'British scientist and author'. It's a minor technical detail but I am curious where it comes from. Do wikipedia pages get assigned a summary category when they are reviewed shortly after the page is created? Is there a way to change that? Or is that summary coming from some other site entirely? Thanks in advance. Mramoeba (talk) 18:08, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mramoeba. Google's summary box may often draw from Wikipedia, but it may also draw from many other sources, or even from outdated or vandalized versions of Wikipedia or Wikipedia mirrors. At the end of the day, we have little or no control over it, and the only way to fix glaring errors is to contact Google. TimothyJosephWood 18:18, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I guessed that it probably pulls from the top ranked site(s) on its algorithm, it just seems odd that it uses Wiki for the lions share of the summary box but not for the heading. What is SORTKEY/Default sort?

I create quite a few new articles, especially on opera singers, and I find that after they have gone "live" another editor often comes along and adds DEFAULTSORT at the top of the category section which is nothing but the singer's name with the last name first, for example on an article I created Anita Välkki another editor added "DEFAULTSORT:Valkki, Anita" and an article I created yesterday Maria Flécheux today an editor added "DEFAULTSORT:Flécheux, Maria" with an edit summary "defaultsort per WP:SORTKEY".I have not the faintest idea what this means so clicked on WP:SORTKEY and am still none the wiser, it is just a lot of gobbledeegook to me. What is this and why is it necessary? I don't really like to create articles with mistakes for others to fix, so when are you supposed to add this "DEFAULTSORT"?Smeat75 (talk) 22:44, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Smeat75: {{DEFAULTSORT:Flécheux, Maria}} means that Maria Flécheux is sorted by surname in categories, e.g. under "F" in Category:French operatic sopranos. Without the code she would sort under "M". PrimeHunter (talk) 23:05, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Maproom: Philippine Hybrid Hokkien was copypasted from Draft:Philippine Hybrid Hokkien, which is only a minor fixable problem (same author, 1 edit). But the draft itself was apparently copied from Hokaglish and seems to duplicate most of its content without attribution (see also the recent revert in this article). The new copy should probably be speedy deleted or redirected, but I wasn't sure about the exact handling (WP:A10 gave me a minor headache and is as accessible as Linear A - but I digress). I think I fixed it (changed the "new" copypasted article to a redirect), but another check from an experienced editor would be appreciated. The issue also included a solid amount of COI-editing in the past. GermanJoe (talk) 18:19, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The template to use for "Archived from the original"?

    Hi all,
I'm currently working the article Kjell Ernst Viktor Ander. The article on the Swedish language Wikipedia uses this reference from the Svensk uppslagsbok archived from that source by Wayback Machine.
Just as that one-line micro-stub article took me an hour to research and write with the Nationalencyklopedin reference, I genuinely have searched for the right template to use for the archived reference. And still can't find it.
    Your help most appreciated!

    Company Page

    Hi there!

I have a client who would like to list their company on Wikipedia.

Are there any rules which I, as the copywriter, will have to follow? Can the article include references to their site or to third-party sites which mention the company in question?

Thanks, Meridith — Preceding unsigned comment added by Meridith.farrugia (talkcontribs)

    • First, paid editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. Please carefully read through Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Second, Wikipedia is not a means of promotion. Please read Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#ADVERTISING. Wikipedia is not a Dun & Bradstreet catalogue of companies. If a company is notable, then it is very likely we already have an article on that company. Of course, we might not; there are companies that are becoming notable all the time. Have a read through Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). If the company you are representing is truly notable per our standards, then sure we can have an article. However, you personally writing it is not a very good idea. Instead, I would put in a request to have an article written. You can do so by reading the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested articles, and ultimately you would list the request at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies. I would like to draw your attention to that page in particular to note that it says "All requests must contain RELIABLE, INDEPENDENT, THIRD PARTY SOURCES". This is exceedingly important. Press releases, the company website itself, their marketing, etc. are not reliable, independent sources. A good rough test; pump the company's name into news.google.com. If there are multiple news articles that do more than just mention the company in passing, it's probably notable enough for an article here.
    • I would like to commend you for coming here to ask this question. What we see the vast, vast majority of the time here is a company sends someone here who creates an article about the company and then tries to defend its existence, rather than seeking help before proceeding. Kudos to you for taking a better approach! --Hammersoft (talk) 13:58, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Meridith.farrugia, welcome to Wikipedia (WP). Please read very carefully the link to Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure above, it includes mandatory instructions for users in your case. The rest of the advice given above is good too, but that part is crucial.
To answer your question, if you decide to write the article yourself (in which case you should probably do it via the Article Wizard): you can include references to their site and to third-party sites, see here for how to do so. If you want the article to exist on the long term, you must include references to sources that (1) are reliable, (2) are independent of the subject, and (3) deal with the subject in detail, all three at once. See WP:GNG and WP:CORP for more information. TigraanClick here to contact me 16:00, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One way to look at this, Meridith.farrugia, is that Wikipedia has little interest in what a company (or any other subject) says about itself, and no interest at all in how the company would like to be portrayed. Wikipedia is only interested in what people unconnected with the subject have published about it, favourable or unfavourable; and the content and organisation of any article is determined by a consensus of editors, according to the independent sources and Wikipedia's policies. --ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Data-Computer or Phone

What's the difference. computer data is like how much memory a program takes up, right? phone data seems to be how much you can watch (highspeed) videos on your phone.

The data measurement is the same: megabytes or gigabytes, and both computer and phone have memory measured in these units. Internet speed is often measured in megabits per second (eight to ten times the megabytes per second rate) whether you are downloading the data over the copper wires of a landline, the fibre-optic filament of a fibre link, or the radio transmission of a phone mast. Phone companies often impose a limit to the amount of date that can be downloaded per month. If you need more detail, ask at the computer reference desk which is designed for this sort of question. Post 2 - Need to Provide Some Sources To Prove Notability As Suggested By An Admin From This Helpdesk

    Hello,

I had created a helpdesk post to help myself solve the problems with this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ana_Veciana-Suarez

Now my concern is that it is scheduled for deletion in 2 days. I would like to provide the following information to keep the page alive and get it published:

Sorry for the delay. Some of the external links are old enough that exist only in paper form and are not online. However, there are parts to this biography that make statements about the books that are wrong.

Here are the statements that need to be corrected:

The corrections are in capital and bold:

Ana Veciana-Suarez is a syndicated columnist FOR TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY and former journalist with the Miami Herald. Later on:Her books include: The Chin Kiss King (FSG, 1997). IT WAS TRANSLATED INTO SEVERAL LANGUAGES, INCLUDING SPANISH AS EL REY DE LOS BESOS BY EDITORIAL PLANETA, S.A. IN 1997. THE BOOK WAS RE-RELEASED IN 2015 THROUGH OPEN ROAD DISTRIBUTION AS THE CHIN KISS KING: A NOVEL. Birthday Parties in Heaven: THOUGHTS ON LOVE, LIFE, GRIEF, AND OTHER MATTERS OF THE HEART. (PLUME 2000). THIS WAS ALSO RE-RELEASED THROUGH OPEN ROAD IN 2015.

I would like the corrections to those parts made to the article. As I was suggested not to edit it myself, since I'm someone hired to resolve this matter, can you do that?

Here are some links that might be good enough to reconsider the person's notability: http://www.nytimes.com/books/97/09/07/bib/970907.rv104243.html for The Chin Kiss King, citing that it first appeared in English in 1997. Hi, first of all, I would suggest you read Your First Article and Help available for editors with conflicts of interest. I will add some of the sources you have provided to the article, thus meaning the article can't be deleted for being unsourced - however, another editor has raised other concerns (WP:SPAM, WP:AUTO, WP:SPA, fails WP:JOURN) that mean it could be deleted, so it won't be "safe" unless it is improved. In the future, it is better to raise these concerns at the article's talk page rather than the help desk - or if you need more urgent help, see the instructions at this page.  Seagull123  Φ  20:14, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello,

Thank you for your response, I will do that in future. Can you please guide me how to remove the 4 concerns that this editor has raised? Even though I have a conflict of interest and it is a biography that the person itself is involved in, it is yet authentic. The personality is notable as proved by the resources and there is no exaggeration or favorism in the writing. It is neutral and journalistic. I will appreciate your direction, thanks!

Our guideline on the notability of politicians says we will often include Major local political figures who have received significant press coverage. Mayor of Asheville is at best marginal by that standard, and making it an autobiography does not help. However, if there is enough independent significant coverage to meet the general notability guideline, then there could be notability and so a valid article, and after that inclusion in the alumni listing. Creating a page for an existing actor.

You don't have to get their permission. Creating an article is one of the harder things to do here on Wikipedia for someone completely new to editing. I suggest using the Article Creation Wizard to get you started. Before doing that, please make sure that they are notable enough for an article by checking WP:NACTOR. †dismas†|(talk) 23:54, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You mention IMDb. Note that this is not regarded as a reliable source. -- Hoary (talk) 23:59, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, Studdfudd. The fact is that Wikipedia is not interested in what you know or think about a subject (or what I know or think about it!), in what random fans think (hence IMDB and blogs cannot be used as a reference), and not much in what the subject or their associates say about them. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject have published about the subject, in places with a reputation for fact checking and editorial control. And if there is little or not such material, then no article will be accepted about them (in this case we say they are not notable). Please read your first article, and check for reliable sources before proceeding further. --ColinFine (talk) 09:46, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In general, anyone can edit an article on wikipedia. Articles which have undergone lots of disruption might be protected to limit who can edit – most commonly "semi-protection", meaning anyone who has registered a username and has 10 edits and 4 days of experience can edit. Any logged in user can create an article, though "IP editors" (i.e. those who are not logged into an account) cannot. There has been some discussion in the past about limiting article creation to a smaller set of users, and a trial on this looks like it might happen once again: see WP:ACTRIAL for the gory details. Reverted Page

I'm unsure who is in the wrong here, but I recently edited a tour page with the set list. I saw the concert in full and several fans of the artist had posted the full/same set list (on social media) as what I posted on here. However, a user deleted the added information because I did not have a source. I have looked at and seen several other tour pages that do not have a source for the set list. I re-added the set list and said the source is YouTube, as the full concert is on there. The user again reverted the set list and threatened to report me. Who is in the wrong? The tour page being discussed is Mariah Carey and Lionel Richie: All the Hits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaish15 (talkcontribs) 08:54, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, IndianBio is correct here, Kaish15. You need a source for the exact date that the tour started (that should be easy to find, I am sure three was news coverage, and even the performer's web site would do). You also need a source for the set list: saying "just watch YouTube" is not good enough. A link to an actual YouTube video would be good enough, provided it is an official video posted by the performers or with their stated permission (say by their label). Wikipedia does not link to copyright violations, so a video posted by a fan without permission cannot be used as a source. It is up to you to provide a source when re-inserting such content, as stated in our policy on the responsibility for providing citations, which says: Any material lacking a reliable source directly supporting it may be removed and should not be restored without an inline citation to a reliable source.
Worse, by repeatedly inserting the same content after being reverted you were engaging in a Edit War. This is grounds for blocking an editor. I will assume that you did not understand this, Kaish15, but please do not do it again. I am going to leave a formal warning on your talk page, to document that you have been informed of this.
It should be fairly easy to source this content (this is not an obscure, uncovered performer), so please provide a source if you want to re-add it. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 10:57, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will add that IndianBio should not have engaged in repeated reverts either, but that editor does have the excuse that s/he was removing, not adding, unsourced content. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 11:11, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Issues with Objectivity and NPOV

Hello, I wrote an article about the history of a company called "The Foxboro Company" yesterday but was removed for "unambiguous promotion". Is there any possible way I could have someone such as an editor review a revised version of the entry (attached below) and discuss what, if any, issues remain? Thank you.

    extended content
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

The Foxboro Company The Foxboro Company was a broad-line supplier of instrumentation founded in Foxboro, Massachusetts in 1908. It was acquired by Siebe plc. of Windsor, UK, in 1990, and later Invensys plc. in 1999, when Siebe merged with BTR to form the Foxboro brand under Invensys Systems, Inc. Invensys was then taken over by the French multinational Schneider Electric in January 2014, where Schneider phased out the Invensys name in favor of its own. The company supplies devices for monitoring and automating manufacturing processes to the chemical, oil and gas, paper, food, pharmaceutical, mining, electric, water, and scientific industries. By the years 1908-1929: Beginnings and Pre-Depression In 1908, Foxboro began as the Industrial Instrument Company when E.H. and B.B. Bristol came to Foxboro, Massachusetts in search of a location for their newly formed company. For a grand total of $500,000 (about $13,500,000 today) the brothers purchased a former steam whistle and gong factory on Neponset Avenue. On December 7, 1908, the Industrial Instrument Company put the finishing touches on its first batch of rings for 4-inch gauges. Factory men working on those first batches put in 59 hours a week, earning an average 13 cents an hour. Over the next ten years the company would go on to build a full gamut of gauges ranging from two pounds to 20,000 pounds. Foxboro engineers also helped produce the first multiple-pen recorder, the first instrument capable of recording the differential between upstream and downstream pressure, and the first recorder-controller integrated into one case. On January 1, 1914, The Industrial Instrument Company officially changed its name to The Foxboro Company, and in 1915 Foxboro introduced its new name and brand to an international gathering at the World’s Fair in San Francisco. There, fellow American historical inventors such as Ford, Firestone and Edison stopped by Foxboro’s booth to look at the display of gauges. International exposure increased as the company adapted temperature indicators for thousands of airplanes fighting on the Western front during WWI, with more Foxboro instruments being utilized during WWI than all other manufacturers combined. The roaring ‘20s were a time of experimentation at Foxboro. Foxboro gauges matured into controllers. Problems with blobbing ink in recorders prompted Foxboro to invest in the first electric drive put into an instrument. Foxboro also introduced the Roaring Ahead notion that oversized control valves should actually be smaller than the line size—a theory that proved, despite industry skepticism, to be true. Further tinkering and refinement ultimately led to the development of the first Model 10 Stabilog Controller. 1930-1939: Great Depression era During the stock market crash, Foxboro’s automatic controllers were being used in complex oil refineries across the country. Bringing their Pyrometer Department back to Neponset Avenue, Foxboro began production of pyrometers used in high temperate processors. During this time, Foxboro was expanding its operations, opening plants in London and Montreal. Back in the States, the company expanded to 14 offices nationwide. Foxboro also broke into the burgeoning pulp and paper industry, and introduced an electronic moisture control instrument called the Verigraph. 1940-1960: War efforts and Industry innovation As World War II hit the states, Foxboro did its part to support war efforts. They doubled their employee count to 1150—of which 320 were women, while the main plant cranked up to 24-hour production. Foxboro’s war contracts included the manufacturing of torpedo mechanisms for the British Admiralty and recorders that could ride a torpedo, charting its depth and stability. Furthermore, Foxboro made delicate spinner release mechanisms for military bases and built a scanning device used to train radar operators responsible for spotting planes in combat. Also, Foxboro’s all-electronic Dynalog industrial instrument was called into active duty by the Merchant Marines—who put it to use testing stresses in military equipment, including Liberty Ships that kept breaking in two. More so, Foxboro instruments were being used in the atom-smashing cyclotron at Berkley, CA, and were utilized for the Manhattan Project. In 1943, Foxboro was awarded the Army-Navy E flag for excellence in recognition of war efforts. The end of WWII in 1945 marked the end of one era, and the beginning of a new one, highlighted by the invention of the Model 40. During the 1950’s, Foxboro introduced its new CONSOTROL series, which enhanced visibility with a full-scale graphic panel and was shipped across the industrial world. As the space race was on, Foxboro focused on miniaturization, transitioning from large case recorders/controllers and local control to centralized control rooms which withstood pressure measuring up to 6000 psi. In 1958, Foxboro officially celebrated the 50th anniversary of the company’s founding. 1960-1980: The Moon landing and the Environment As the 60's began, Foxboro appeared for the first time on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol FOX. As the Digital Age dawned, Foxboro invented the M97000 process computer, PCP88 fully redundant DEC machine, and its Direct Digital Control system. Foxboro also played a role in Apollo11’s mission to put a man on the moon. An established NASA vendor, they supplied instruments and control systems used in Apollo’s ground support application. Before lift-off, Foxboro control loops made sure the launch vehicle’s temperature remained at a steady 70 degrees, helping to keep the mission on track. Foxboro began ramping up solutions aimed at facilitating compliance with new environmental regulations. In 1971, they introduced the SPEC 200 electronic control system, which aimed to simplify the configuration of electronic analog control systems. Foxboro then created the VIDEOSPEC shared CRT-based video display with variable function keys and INTERSPEC serial communications—a distributed digital system. The first successful system was deployed at an Exxon refinery. As the Arab oil embargo caused gasoline prices to soar, Foxboro provided itself as a source for process and control instrumentation— including the extraction, processing and transporting of petroleum and natural gas. 1980-2000: Global impact Foxboro began the 1980’s by contributing ambient air instrumentation to the British Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. Well above sea-level, Foxboro also aided in the successful launch of the first Space Shuttle Columbia—which utilized the 42 MIRAN-80 Ambient Air Monitor System. The decade also saw the formation of many fruitful relationships with groups such as Hewlett-Packard, the Saudi Arabian government, and Mobil Oil. In 1987, Foxboro released the Intelligent Automation Series or I/A Series— an open industrial system. By the close of the 1980s, Foxboro’s globalization spanned around the world, from oil fields in the Persian Gulf, to platforms in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, to storage plants in Rotterdam, to a brewery in Perth, and refineries in Texas. Early in the 90’s, the I/A Series started becoming more adopted. In 1992, Foxboro followed-up with the Patented Dynamic Performance Measures, which measured temperature, flow, level, production, cost and yield. Three years later, Foxboro introduced I/A Series on Windows NT, a control system that utilized Microsoft Windows technology for workstation applications. In 1996, Foxboro and SAP jointly certified the interface to SAP’s R/3 ERP system. 2000-2008: 100 years of continued innovation As the industrial world entered the 21st century, Foxboro, in 2004 introduced the redundant OPC client embedded in a process control system—in essence, “industrializing” Microsoft-based OPC technology to allow for open data exchange between different vendors’ products and systems. These contributions played a role in 2006, when Foxboro’s parent company Invensys, unveiled InFusion, an Enterprise Control System. In 2008, The Foxboro Company celebrated its 100th anniversary as a company. Current Advancements Foxboro is currently at work in the business of Field Devices. Pressure transmitters Foxboro’s pressure transmitters cover pressure applications, including differential, gauge, and absolute pressure, as well as remote seal and flanged level. Flowmeter technologies Foxboro’s flowmeters are designed to describe the collection of various technologies used to measure flow, including the selection of the best method or methods for a given flow measurement.

Process analytical Foxboro has also developed analyzers, transmitters, sensors, and solutions which measure pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. Temperature transmitters Foxboro’s temperature transmitters measure over a wide range of temperatures and transmit them into analog and digital outputs. Level measurement Foxboro’s level measurement products measure buoyancy, level, interface, or density of liquids among other things. Accutech Accutech instruments are used in applications like monitoring and controlling tank level measurement, environmental monitoring, and pressure measurement.

Your proposed article contains not a single WP:Reliable source. You need to read WP:Referencing for beginners, and to look at some good articles about other companies. Dear editors:

I keep coming across instances where many references to music chart websites have been added to an article, even though the music indicated did not appear on those charts. Two examples are Futuristic Polar Bears and Shermanology. Is this appropriate, or is it a kind of reference spamming? In the examples given, the references are to various countries' "Charts Portal". The name of the portal operator appears three times in each reference. In the Futuristic Polar Bears article, I clicked on the first reference that actually showed a chart position, and although the text said "Belgium Charts Portal", the link was to an Ultratop chart page. Is this the same company? I am confused as to the purpose of the "Charts Portal" references, but they seem to be all over the place, so maybe I'm missing something.—Anne Delong (talk) 16:25, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Anne Delong: Great question! Please add {{Failed verification}} next to the end of the ref tag. Have a nice day. Daylen (talk) 18:51, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just added a paper by Wicherts, Borsboom & Dolan to race and intelligence using the sfn template, but I can't get it to display so that it takes you right to the paper when you click on the footnote. The paper in question is Wicherts, Borsboom & Dolan 2010b; any help fixing the formatting on this would be greatly appreciated. Everymorning (talk) 18:24, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that there is no entry for Wicherts, Borsboom, and Dolan 2010b in the bibliography. If you are using {{sfn|Wicherts|Boorsboom|Dolan|2010b}} as a reference, the full reference you want the link to point to needs to contain the parameter date=2010b. Currently, the date parameter is set to "January 2010" instead. (See Katz 1998a and Katz 1998b in the references to Women in Classical Athens for a real-life example...) Making a wikipedia go live

I'm trying to launch a page for Joshua Pro Hartman. He's a cyclist of the USA Team. I thought I submitted the contents for approval. I haven't received a notification or anything. Feeling completely overwhelmed. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by ProHartman (talkcontribs) 21:19, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Relates to Draft:Joshua Pro Hartman
Hello ProHartman Your draft currently displays as a new unreviewed article. To submit it for review, delete the unreviewed line at the top of the source and replace with {{subst:submit}}. However, the page is not yet ready for mainspace. It has no properly formatted references but does contain some external links within the content which should be removed and/or added as inline citations where applicable. Please see WP:REFB for a guide to adding references. Further, do you have a connection to the subject? Please see WP:COI for advice on managing any conflict of interest. The article as it stands does not really adhere to a neutral point of view and will need some work to make it suitable for mainspace. Please also see 'your first article'. I will also leave some links at your talk page. Good luck, and return here if you need further help. Eagleash (talk) 22:04, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, ProHartman. Your use of language "launch a page for JPH" suggests to me that you have misunderstood what Wikipedia is for. A more appropriate phrase is "write an article about JPH". Wikipedia does not have "pages for" subjects - if we have an article about a subject, it should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with the subject have published about the subject. What the subject says or wants to say is of very little relevance.
Also, from your user name, it appears that this may be an autobiography, which is strongly discouraged, or at the very list that you have a conflict of interest, in which case you need to approach this article very carefully. --ColinFine (talk) 23:04, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    greetings wkipidia team

i just create my account i'm interested in creating a wikipedia about my self an my accomplishments how can i make that happen please explain how i can create a page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Juanpatronn (talkcontribs) 19:38, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Juanpatronn. Wikipedia strongly discourages the creation of autobiographies. Even if you are Notable, (which most people are not -- I am not) it is very hard to remain neutral when writing about oneself or one's own work. Please don't try it, it leads to frustration. Also in writing any biographical article there need to be high quality independent published reliable sources that discuss the subject in some depth to demonstrate notability. See our guideline for the notability of biographical articles. If you do decide to create an article, I advise that you use the article wizard to create a draft under the articles for Creation project. Please read Your First Article and Referencing for Beginners, as well as the pages linked above, first. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 23:54, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please note that if created, it would not be a "wikipedia" or a page" or a "profile", it would be an encyclopedia article about you. You would not have control over it, and negative things could be included, provided that they were supported by reliable sources. You would have no veto, and indeed less rights to edit it than any random stranger. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 23:57, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    The Towering Inferno

Please refrain from accusing me of 'vandalizing' a Wikipedia page in future. I am not a vandal. I only make changes when I notice a error in spelling, punctuation or a fact I know to be incorrect. Other than that I leave as is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.66.35.14 (talk) 06:55, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is clear to me that your edit was not vandalism, but please note that use of BLOCK CAPITALS is discouraged here in Wikipedia. It is regarded as SHOUTING, and we try to co-operate here, not shout at each other. Please continue to correct errors when you find them. Best wishes. Dbfirs 07:29, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ca you please delete user-account "Stefano Gatto 11" I created by mistake?

Ca you please delete user-account Stefano Gatto 11 I created by mistake? I did not change anything in Wikipedia under that account so there isno problem of leaving orphan changes behind. I use Stefano.Gatto instead, which I created years ago. Thank you. Stefano — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stefano.gatto (talkcontribs) 16:07, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Stefano.gatto: Because Wikipedia content is licensed under the GFDL and the CC-BY-SA, all edits must be kept for attribution purposes, and so your account cannot be deleted. You do, however, have the right to vanish, which you can exercise by (1) requesting your user page (found at Special:Mypage) and subpages be deleted, by adding the {{db-userreq}} template to them; (2) requesting to change your username to something that is unconnected with you (possibly a random collection of letters and numbers); (3) never logging in to your account again. The "right to vanish" does not mean anyone has the right to a fresh start under a new identity. Anyone who wants to continue editing should request a change of username instead so edits can be reattributed.Template:Z41  Seagull123  Φ  16:58, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Book Creator

I am finding Wikipedia so confusing and hard to use when I work in Book Creator. The Help information for beginners does not help with this.

I have created a book of 330 pages on Earth and Space Science. There are other related topics that I would like to create separate books for. Example: A book on scientists that collects pages of scientists throughout history. I cannot figure how to create a new book. Whatever I try to do, goes into the Earth & Space Science book.

The other thing I find frustrating is finding my book on Earth and Space Science. When I log on and click on Book Creator I can't find a link to my book. I have to hunt for it. Today it showed all the 330 pages in the book and at the top of the page said the book had zero pages.

So I am just completely confused and frustrated. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MactheTeach (talkcontribs) 16:08, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MactheTeach, for reference, I believe User:MactheTeach/Books/Earth & Space Science is your book. As you can see at the top of that page, "The Book Creator software has had significant limitations since it was rebuilt in 2014", and there are certain problems with the book creator. I also believe that there is some help available at Help:Books/Feedback. You could make it easier to find the book by creating a link to it at your user page. For your other problems, someone who is more knowledgeable technically will probably have to help you, and if you don't get any more help here, try asking at the technical village pump.  Seagull123  Φ  17:05, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    how to do attached

Wiki I am not sure how to make contact and how or if we can do something good, I hope spectacular. I have many innovations (new concepts) that are not included in Wikipedia, but which have in places Major import and impact. I have not published for fame nor fortune so these are not well known and I am being urged to get wider dissemination before I die (age 81). My health is failing.

These have been presented from about 1980 to 2002 in a series of seminars at Uiversidad Nacional Major de San Marcos in Peru (the premier University in this hemisphere founded 1555) and I hold a permanent Professorship and Nacional gold medal awarded in 2002 for that series of presentations, with many repeats on virtually all topics at other institutions such as Universities and Institute for Advanced Studies.

I am planning to try to re-do an record the most important concepts as there is a new audience now and having DVD’s will allow fast widespread dissemination of the concepts.

    This is online at www.nexit.org.

I have past two innovations in Scientific Method (with 3 more in progress) and am the only living person to make contributions. I will provide you with my 7th draft of the expanded scientific method if you wish to help with a final edit clean up for inclusion in Wikipedia. A formal bi lingual release (with recording) is planned in Peru as soon as is practical, it is winter there while not extreme compared to USA my hyper sensitivity to cold is a problem.

Cyclic History (three cycles);; a 700 yr rise and fall of all (many 150) civilizations;; 45 yr cycle of innovation alternating science and humanities (links to 45 yr major war cycles in science part of cycle going back 5000 years;;) and science innovation ~22 yrs; fallowed by Humanities ~22 yrs innovation and third a decade cycle (years ending in 9 are usually lead in USA into depressions). Having these three cycles converts history into a predictive science. Better yet it is a framework against which to learn a unusually coherent and complete picture of ALL history but in micro detail. It is learning tool that should allow fantastic knowledge of 150 past “civilizations and what to do AND WHAT NOT TO DO to stabilize and do away with such negative factors as War (the scourge of mankind) and social extremisms. I think I should propose allowing WIKI to publish edit an index more or less the whole compressed version now at www.nexit.org to make this widely available.

There are several “Progressions” (things that follow one another) a new way of thinking which also lead to finding innovations. Again these can be edited and presented as a new formal was of thinking allowing good choices and avoiding bad to catastrophic ones.

And Physics: There are 7 major and more minor discoveries here that will not be known if we follow the 45 year cyclic pattern until 2135 AD. Yes I have been living and thinking in things normally in the future.

Model of Photon : A photon consists of two “poles” which rotate about one another interpole distance ,d where 6 π 6 d = the wavelength of the photon, λ, and ~ 5768 d =λ The d is also the bond distance in molecules allowing precise stereo chemistry from the measured wavelength some 5768 times larger a “microscope of 5768 in the angstrom range. This shoud have been discovered and used the past Science Cycle. IT needs strong dissemination.

Mass is Quantized, All known particles are composed of photons and only photons

in specific resonance states Electrons are 3 photons in λ (wavelength) repeat mode;;; protons are 5 photons in d mode (two sets of two photons with matching opposed phases are two “quarks” making a slight revision to present theory) but this leads to precision calculatons such as Mp/me = 6π5 = 1836.1181.. vs 1836.152701 measured vs 1836.152701 * (For more precision Mp / me = 65 (1+{6/106}) = 1836.152719 adding in a correction from ST Quantum theor below). I list over 50 particles which are unstable but still “photonic”. Space-time is quantized" into discrete units named SPASONS. The spason is pure position in a four dimensional sense (including x,y,z, and t) and does not display the characteristics we call mass or energy, but its properties do give rise to mass and/or energy (force, momentum, and 5 angular such terms) in our macro domain. The spason expressed in space units, x, is about: x = 1.2737272175 x 10 -21 cm (or x 10 -23 meters)(eq 52) or in time units, T, it would be about T = 4.2486966942 x 10 -32 seconds (eq 48). Note the ratio of x/T = C, the speed of light = 29,979,245,619.3 cm/sec (eq 26). This is the boundary or the end of the domain where distance and time have meaning. Between roughly 10-15 and 10-23 meters it is improper to say that we are describing mass or matter, but rather the description of the universe and its properties must be done in terms of space and time variables and pure numbers. Below the domain of roughly 10-23 meters even distance, or time at less than 10 -32 sec. becomes irrelevant and we are forced to use just pure numbers

Cosmology The initial creation of space-time itself happened 15.387 Billion years ago with first epoch a single Spason then a linear (one dimensional) Spason trail followed by two dimensional, and finally three dimensional Spason filling of a space-time Universe (which was without form and void). Then second epoch the Spasons paired up forming photons, which added to the filling of the space-time structure (“Let there be light”) This is seen by infra red glow about 13.82 billion years ago . Finally third epoch after 13.82 billion years ago photon conjugated to form protons electrons and later neutrons as hydrogen fused to heavier elements and mass = matter was formed which formed stars etc and there was something to be seen. Note Big Bang went away. Out of time and space domains.

    Multi Universe Theory (MUT) (Universes =closed -not open)(Total = D6 = 5.53972 x 10 62 but universes like ours Balanced = D3 = 2.35 x 10 31) TOE = Integrated Theory of Everything (no action at a distance, nor “Fields” =all interactions are local and direct; = and opposite)

Indexing Below space time only pure dimensionless number may be used to describe events-r requires new binary counting system a “natural binary system” where each number is 1 and only 1 binary bit changed from nearest neighbor. Tachyons All events at any specific time in our universe are connected related to all others, but changes happen with each unit of time. These are pure information, (ESP) not limited to C nor space nor time. I believe our mutual cooperation can have major social impact and bnefit. You can do things I cannot do and visa versa. Thus SOS please help me to help you making a major expansion in several branches of knowledge available and thus proving th corecness of the basic concept of Wikipedia free access to knmoledge ( I add in the best format to learn and teach knowledge Nexial techniques.. nexus = connecting things. Hi James. I'm sorry to hear about your health, but if I understand what you are proposing to do, please do not include any of these new concepts in Wikipedia. This is exactly the wrong place. Wikipedia, as an encyclopedia, is a compendium of articles on topics of knowledge that the world has already taken note of by substantive coverage of the topic in reliable, secondary sources that are entirely unconnected with the topic. Wikipedia is never a proper place for essentially first publication of anything. So, for example, if it was 1915, and Albert Einstein had just published his theory of General Relativity, Wikipedia would properly have no place for it. Because of the type of reference work an encyclopedia is, we forbid original research here. Only if people entirely unconnected with you publish material about your theories at some length in reliable sources, would an article then be warranted. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:18, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also, while this looks very impressive, it seems that your work has not been published yet. This means it is unlikely to be notable, which is required for something to be included on Wikipedia. You may wish to read Your First Article which explains what should be included in a new article on Wikipedia. For your work to become notable, it will need to be published, and reported in reliable sources. I hope this has helped you, and other editors may also wish to comment here and provide help - but if you want any more help, you can ask here, or at my user talk page. I wish you the best of luck.  Seagull123  Φ  19:20, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
