Mysterious replacement of less-than and greater-than signs

    Resolved

I have no idea how I (unintentionally) did this, but somehow in this edit I replaced the < and > signs in every hidden comment and reference throughout the article with, respectively, < and >, which broke the formatting in every single case. This is really frustrating and if someone could fix it and/or explain to me how this happened when I was just trying to categorize the page (and add an institution to the infobox) that would be great. IntoThinAir (talk) 00:59, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I fixed the errors (by copying and pasting the source wikitext into Microsoft Word to use find-and-replace on the accidentally-replaced signs). Still have no idea how or why this happened--never seen anything like this in over 7 years of editing here. IntoThinAir (talk) 01:03, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like some bug relating to your browser and/or something running in said browser, like a browser extension or userscript. Some characters got replaced with HTML entity codes. This is usually because something (like a piece of JavaScript) read in and parsed all the article text but was buggy and didn't "un-sanitize" it before storing it back in the edit field. Not sure if it had something to do with HotCat, which I see you used in that edit. You can try experimenting in a sandbox (such as a page in your userspace) to see if you can replicate the issue. (Copy-and-paste the article text into it.)
I fixed it with a partial revert. I opened that revision for editing, copied the categories, then edited the previous revision and pasted them in. This kept the stuff we wanted and undid the rest. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 01:15, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I said all that, I see you mentioned Microsoft Word. Did you use Word for the edit that went bad? If so it was likely caused by the copy-and-pasting between your browser and Word. Word is a word processor that does all kinds of magic formatting of documents, and sometimes this messes things up. If you want to do editing outside of your browser I recommend using a text editor instead. WordPad is a basic one that is included with Windows; there are numerous others that have all kinds of incredibly advanced features. (Programmers generally use such text editors to program if they're not using an IDE.) --47.146.63.87 (talk) 01:21, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, I would never (and almost never do) use Word for Wikipedia edits normally. I only used Word to fix the error by, as I stated, copying and pasting the wikitext and then using Word's find and replace function. The original edit accidentally replacing the characters was made in my browser (Firefox). IntoThinAir (talk) 01:48, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Page preview missing on tablet

Hey there, I wondered if someone can offer any help or advice about my recent troubles with Wikipedia.

Since yesterday's (9th of April) evening all Wikipedia page previews (the ones that appear when you hover the mouse over a link to the article) disappered completely when using my tablet (the browser on the tablet is Chrome 55.0.2883.91). The previews were there and worked properly only hours before that, I never had any troubles with them previously, and I am certain I didn't change anything whatsoever in my site settings, browser settings or else. Now they refuse to pop-up on screen regardless of which language-based Wiki I use or if I'm switching between mobile and regular version. Since I never turned them off using the cog icon, the option of turning the preview back on doesn't appear in the lower section of the page, as suggested in the FAQ. Cache emptying didn't help. JS is turned on and the search field drop down menu with results works just fine.

Any advice on what could I do to make the previews appear again? Thanks in advance. Gregory 2A02:2698:4C2D:3E7:9D8E:72E8:7357:29F0 (talk) 11:06, 10 April 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:2698:4C2D:3E7:9D8E:72E8:7357:29F0 (talk) 06:59, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone have a look at Lovejoy High School (Lucas, Texas)? I think there may be some incorrect information about the ex-superintendent of the school in the article, particularly the statement about him being on death row, but because I am in the UK I can't access the source (https://www.dallasnews.com/news/watchdog/2019/02/22/lovejoy-isd-chief-ousted-after-inappropriate-conduct-was-a-master-manipulator). Criteria for known people having a page

    Hello,

I am new here, so please be gentle :-)

I have read up on the Wikipedia policies so I know who should and should not have a profile on Wikipedia - for example, there seems to be a "named chair" requirement for academics, but I have seen profiles that do not seem to fit this. For example, Stuart_J._Ritchie

How does this profile meet the criteria? Thanks for helping me learn. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Owling It Up (talkcontribs) 09:20, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what "named chair" means, but our policies on academics/professors to meet can be seen at WP:GNG and WP:ACADEMIC. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:22, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    Named chair.--Shantavira|feed me 09:32, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict × 2) @Owling It Up: To add to that: professors with a named chair are indeed generally considered notable, however, it is not the only way in which notability can be proven. An academic only needs to meet one of the criteria at WP:NACADEMIC or meet WP:GNG to be considered notable. @Lee Vilenski: A named chair is an academic position paid for by an endowment fund. The donor can then name the position. --MrClog (talk) 09:38, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
With the caveat that I do not usually edit articles on academics - I don't think this person does meet either WP:ACADEMIC or WP:GNG. You could start a discussion about this on the article's talk page, tag the article with {{notability}}, or, if you think it's warranted, propose the article for deletion. If you do the latter, the onus is on you to search first to see if there are any other references that could be added to the article which might make notability clearer (WP:BEFORE). Hope that helps. Tacyarg (talk)
    • Basically, @Owling It Up: catching a mistake elsewhere on the site doesn't excuse other mistakes. The article on Ritchie (which I've not opened but have seen this situation before) may well not meet our notability guidelines and may need to be deleted. That doesn't mean that the notability guideline is no longer the consensus of the community, it just means a mistake slipped through the cracks. Ian.thomson (talk) 10:32, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you everyone - this has been very helpful. Owling It Up (talk) 10:52, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note also: there are no "profiles" in Wikipedia. What we have, and what we want, are impartial articles, such as you would find in any other encyclopedia. "Profiles" are found in social media, and serve far different purposes. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:21, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Want to merger Uber Eats article into Uber article so is it possible to merge 2 articles — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tsla1337 (talkcontribs) 10:33, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tsla1337 It's possible, but whether it is a good idea or not is another issue. You will want to discuss this with other editors first as Uber is a well known company; there may be reasons why there are two different articles(one about the company as a whole and another about one of its parts). Wrong IPA transcriptions by anonymous user

An anonymous French IP has been adding some unsourced English IPA transcriptions regarding French musical artists, such as this, this and this. I don't mean to be rude or inconsiderate here, but these artists are mainly known in France, so I'm sure they don't have an established English pronunciation - for example, placing a stressed /ə/ is forbidden in English (second link). I also feel {{IPAc-en}} should be used instead of {{IPA-en}} due to the former using consistent notation and useful alt notes. I don't know how to reach out to the user about this, because the IP keeps on changing, so if there's anyone that can help, please tell me. Again this is not meant to be a personal attack, as I'm sure they are fine to add French transcriptions. — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 12:26, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't checked any policies on this, but I'm inclined to disagree. If I'm interested in a French artist, and I take the trouble to look at the IPA for their name, it's because I want to know how French people say it, not how it's garbled by Brits or Americans. Maproom (talk) 12:55, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AmazingJus, I think the stress marker on that esample is misplaced. The "eye dialect" version after it clearly indicates that the first syllable is stressed. --ColinFine (talk) 15:47, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom: In that case, they should use {{IPA-fr}} with the French pronunciation. Like I said, surely they are fine to add French transcriptions. — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 23:36, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: Whatever the case may be, I reckon that such artists' pronunciations in English need to be sourced. — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 23:38, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Login issues

I have been a user and contributor to Wikipedia for several years. Today I was asked to login but did not have my most recent password, so I clicked on Forgot Password and provided my e-mail address and was told I would get an e-mail from Wiki to enable me to reset the password. No such e-mail was received, and I even checked my trash folder and spam folder. How can I get this done so I can continue to use Wikipedia? -- Ron Albert in Florida — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:589:8400:8390:74B4:33B6:47CE:6F93 (talk) 13:17, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell us the account name? Are you certain you set up e-mail with the account? You have to enter your e-mail address in Preferences and then click the link in the confirmation e-mail that is sent to you. Unfortunately if you didn't do that, I'm afraid you won't be able to reset the password, as this is the only way to do so. If you're sure the e-mail didn't get caught by spam filters, this is likely what happened—if there's no account associated with the e-mail address you enter, no password reset e-mail will be set. You can always try again to be sure—make sure to double-check the e-mail address you enter. Fortunately this isn't a big deal as all that's tied to an account is the edit history, preferences, and any extra permissions such as rollback. If the account can't be recovered you can go ahead and create a new one, and be sure to set up e-mail this time! You can place a note on the user page linking to your old account if you know the username. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions you're welcome to ask here. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 16:10, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@CyberTroopers: Welcome to Wikipedia. Start at WP:ORG for the guidelines on notability for organizations including schools. Only schools that meet these criteria are suitable for an article. You're probably better off proposing this here: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 20:19, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you are using for example Mozilla Firefox, it's possible to dynamically fiddle with the displayed HTML and CSS, for example making the text white on a black background. However, this will only affect your own browser, not the actual Wikipedia site, so you'll be the only person to actually see it, and the style will revert to normal if you browse to another page or close your browser. JIP | Talk 23:17, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An simpler solution may just be to simply use a browser extension, if you are using Mozilla Firefox/Iceweasel you can go to the Mozilla Addons website, alternatively if you are using Google Chrome- try looking in the Chrome Web Store for a suitable extension. Stickymatch (talk) 01:18, 11 April 2020 (UTC) Also a lot of computer displays and operating systems offer a "night mode" that lowers brightness and blue light level. You might want to look into that, which will work for everything on your computer, not just Wikipedia. I note we have a night mode article but that just redirects to light-on-dark color scheme, which is what the original question was about. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 01:46, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Question about notifications

In Preferences, I can choose to be notified "when someone links to a page I created from another page." Is there some way for me to receive some kind of notification when someone links to a page I did not create? For example, it would be interesting to be notified each time someone links to the Billboard article, because it's likely that the link should be changed to Billboard (magazine). Thanks! Stating volatile current facts in Wikipedia

A particular problem of editing a volatile current fact on Wikipedia has led me to look for general guidelines about this, but I can't find them. My first question is: when is it legitimate to express as an absolute fact a fact that is merely current? For example, if an article states "The website has 450,000 users" or an infobox says "Alexa rank: 24,123", these are expressions of absolute fact, even though the fact is liable to change. For a future reader such statements may well be false and misleading. My second question is: does Wikipedia already have general guidelines that cover such cases? Mrmedley (talk) 02:59, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrmedley: It would be appropriate to provide a reliable source for the fact, and add a date in the text and an |access-date= in the reference indicating when you read the fact. While "Alexa rank: 24,123" will eventually change, "Alexa rank: 24,123 (as of Apr 2020)" would always be correct. One step further would be to use Template:As of in the article to encourage other editors to help keep the fact up to date. GoingBatty (talk) 04:58, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to warn editors about possible COI

Hi there! I've recently seen a single-purpose accounts that has almost exclusively edited a single, semi-obscure article over a long period of time. I have a suspicion that they may have a conflict of interest (partially because their edits also seem a bit biased/promotional or based heavily off of primary sources). Is this enough of a reason to leave a template like {{uw-coi}} on their user talk page?

I don't want to suggest someone might have a conflict of interest without enough reason (mostly because I don't know if that's considered bad wiki etiquette). But I also want to know what's the usual process for starting these conversations with longer-term editors (or what has worked well for other editors in the past). Thanks! - Whisperjanes (talk) 05:24, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Page reverted - where to find it an correct it

Hi good people - I recently created the page Alter Echo (album). It's the name of the fourth studio album by the rock band Dizzy Mizz Lizzy. The page was shortly reverted and made a Redirect to the main page about the band. I don't know why that is. I have contacted the admin responsible, but he/she has ignored me and answered other users instead. Please advise :) /Kmilling — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kmilling (talkcontribs) 07:11, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Kmilling: Hello, the redirect was restored as the article you created was just a tracklisting and a release date; there was little if anything to demonstrate notability... see WP:NMUSIC for more information. It was also without references as noted in the edit summary when the page was restored. You did the correct thing in attempting to contact the other editor (not an admin. as far as I am aware) and it would have been good if they'd responded but it was a relatively short time ago. Pinging JalenFolf in case they wish to comment here.
It may have been premature to create the page into mainspace and expect others to finish it for you. It would probabably have been better to begin with a draft via WP:AFC or WP:WIZ and develop an article as and when more reliably sourced information was available. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 07:44, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eagleash - Can I reactivate the reverted page myself and add proper and valid references? I will certainly consider using WP:AFC or WP:WIZ i the future (I'm still learning the advanced rules of the English Wikipedia). Kmilling

@Kmilling: I would not recommend overwriting the existing redirect. As things stand the topic does not demonstrate notability and there would be a strong possibility that it would just be redirected again. Use WP:WIZ and start a draft. You could use the wording in existence at the redirect (old version) as a start. If you copy and paste it to the new draft you should probably attribute it by an edit summary like "copied from Alter Echo (album), version dated xx/xx/xxxx). When it is ready, you can submit it for review, (to do this you place {{subst:submit}} at the top of the source. A reviewer will delete or request deletion of, the existing redirect to make way.
By way of information, notability cannot be supported by MusicBrainz, Facebook, Discogs.com, Spotify, IMDb, Amazon, blogs or a band's or label's self-published PR. AllMusic only counts as support for notability if the site publishes a review of the album by one of its professional staff, and not if the album just has a purely WP:ROUTINE track listing. Good luck. Eagleash (talk) 10:06, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Kmilling, in response to "where to find it an correct it": Click or tap the link for Alter Echo (album). At the top of the Dizzy Mizz Lizzy page, you should see a line "(Redirected from Alter Echo (album))". Use that link to get to the actual redirect page and access its History, Talk, etc. You can then copy the text to somewhere like your user space to work on it. Hope I'm not misunderstanding the question. Does that help? Pelagic (talk) 00:55, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pelagic - Yes, I think you got it right. I'll try to work the page in a safer environment and maybe reach out for someone to validate the draft before I (or anyone else) publish. Thanks a lot for you tremendous help / Kmilling

(edit conflict) @Invader2580: It appears the page was deleted as a copyright infringement. Wikipedia cannot accept content copied from elsewhere, this will typically be quickly deleted and users who add copy-vio can easily lose editing privileges. If you can begin a new draft using your own words and referenced to reliable sources and submit it for review, Wikipedia will reconsider. If this author is truly notable, Wikipedia would like a properly written article about them. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 11:02, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My name is "Ashton Nichols." Several years ago, I was contacted by a colleague who told me that there were numerous errors of fact, detail, and editing in a Wikipedia Page under my name ("Ashton Nichols"), a page that I had not created or had any role in creating.

When I went to the page "Ashton Nichols" for the first time, I noted that there were errors of the kind that my colleague had noted. At that time, I did not realize that Wikipedia disproved of a person too close to the subject of the entry--or the subject him- or herself--having editorial input into that page. As a result, I periodically began correcting and adding to the detail of the page under my name.

Now that I see the maintenance template indicating that an editor involved in the page is too close to the subject (in fact IS the subject), I am more than willing to stop having any role whatsoever in the future of the "Ashton Nichols" entry. However, I do not know how to contact an editor--whom I assume should not be close to me, or even known to me--who can accept my new understanding and can see to the removal of the maintenance template.

In addition, I currently see nothing in the current entry that constitutes a subjective evaluation or a biased view. If I am mistaken in this, I am more than willing to have an objective editor remove any such details.

Can you help me with these requested editorial actions. Please let me know how you advise me to proceed, or what you can do to see to the removal of the maintenance template.

    Thank you,75.165.82.98 (talk) 17:18, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ashton! Per Wikipedia:About_you#Concerns, there are several things you can do when you see errors of fact at Ashton Nichols, including posting suggestions and reliable sources at Talk:Ashton Nichols, using the "Biographies of living persons" noticeboard, and sending an email to the confidential help line. It would also be appropriate to post to Talk:Ashton Nichols about what should be done before removing the maintenance template. Thanks for asking! GoingBatty (talk) 18:14, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to get a bot to stop editing a page?

The bot user:JJMC89_bot keeps removing an image from the Balconville page. Balconville is a play, and the image is the book cover from the book in which the script for the play was published. My understanding of WP's fair use rules is that this use of the image is allowed. I have posted to the bot's talk page, the owner's talk page, and the article's talk page; but no human has responded. How do I get the bot to stop? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crath (talkcontribs) 18:35, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You need to follow the instructions on File:Balconville.jpg. You can't just say "this file is fair use"; you need to give an full and detailed explanation as to why this image is necessary for this particular article. In this case, I'd suggest using {{Non-free use rationale book cover}} and filling in the fields as necessary; you basically need to demonstrate that all 10 of the points here are met, otherwise the image can't be used. ‑ Iridescent 18:42, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I chose that license when I uploaded the image. I've uploaded many album cover images over the years and I've never been required to then restate the license text again and provide a link backwards to the article. This is a waste of everyone's time. Christopher Rath (talk) 18:58, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You may think it's a waste of time, but it's a legal requirement; if you don't provide a non-free rationale for each article on which the image is to be used (as you have done on every other fair-use image you've ever uploaded so you're obviously already aware), the image can't be used in that article. This isn't something over which there's any discretion. ‑ Iridescent 19:26, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Draft

Hi, I have submitted a draft for review, it was rejected with some reasons. After correcting the errors, can I move the draft to Namespace without presenting to another review? Thanks Santoshdts (talk) 19:04, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Santoshdts While you technically could do so, I would advise against it. It's better for the draft and better for you to work out any issues before your draft is formally part of the encyclopedia. Once it is in the encyclopedia, it will be treated more critically. 331dot (talk) 19:07, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Santoshdts, I suspect that whenever you have written "legislature" in your draft, you have meant "legislator". Maproom (talk) 19:20, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oops Maproom Thanks for pointing it out. I need give a serious look at the drafts. Thanks again. Santoshdts (talk) 19:28, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, because if the image is needed at all (and I doubt this), then I don't see why its resolution should be reduced. -- Hoary (talk) 01:44, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I haven't changed the resolution of the image on Commons, I've just caused it to be displayed smaller in the article. Maproom (talk) 06:48, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, because it doesn't need to be smaller, and it certainly doesn't need to be much smaller. -- Hoary (talk) 01:38, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Size looks fine to me. Are you trying to avoid the second image from pushing down into the references? (Which I see using Vector/desktop view but not Minerva/mobile on a tablet in portrait mode.) Please keep in mind that web pages don't lay out the same as print materials, and will render differently depending on the device and the user-selected skin. You could lay out the images side-by-side, but this mightn't look good for just two. Somebody might know and chime in if there is any Manual of Style guidance about this. Or is there a different reason why you think the image should be smaller? Pelagic (talk) 01:12, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help please - ref number 12 is difficult. It is in red and the publisher and year of publishing was VERY hard to establish. Please fix and I am sorry. 175.33.49.35 (talk) 01:57, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be doubling a lot of characters (an extra colon above (originally) and two spaces between each word. The reference was showing the error "Check date values in: |accessdate=". This was because of:
    • |accessdate=12 April 20200
Note the extra space and extra '0'. I changed it to:
    • |accessdate=12 April 2020
A number of people have been puzzled by your posts. May I suggest that, if there is a problem editing with whatever device you are using when making and not being able to fix these errors, please don't edit with that device. Your edit history shows other edits that do not exhibit these problems (although, looking further, I do see some double-spacing, which is undesirable, though fortunately often invisible to readers). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:35, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AlanM1, additional spaces are usually invisible to readers. -- Hoary (talk) 06:57, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes real spaces do not influence the citation templates working. Contrariwise sometimes may happens that deleting spaces in references seems resolving an apparent error. But if there is an error caused by spaces it's because are not spaces (decimal code 32, hex 20) but invisible characters copied and pasted from external editors. User:AlanM1--Pierpao (talk) 08:54, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two different issues. One is the extra zero in the year, which caused the error. The other is the double-spacing. I contend that it is disruptive to write source text that looks like this. Or like this, for that matter. There are probably also places where it has other undesirable effects. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 14:20, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@McAnnis59: See Help:How to move a page for the steps, and Wikipedia:Moving a page for additional guidance. Before you move User:McAnnis59/sandbox, you have more work to do (e.g. provide reliable sources, fix the infobox error, change "it's" to "its", remove the brackets around "[]Apollo Temple]]", remove the duplicate image). Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:46, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@McAnnis59: If you consider the sandbox draft to be ready for mainspace, you can place {{subst:submit}} at the top of the draft which will submit it for review. However, I would not recommend doing so until you have corrected the large angry red error message and some other formatting issues and added, at the very least, one reliable source. (See WP:REFB for how to do this). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 04:53, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

IP number, you are using a phone. I very occasionally edit with a phone myself. It was cheap when I bought it, and it's four years old now. Its battery is almost dead. However, it lets me make the kinds of edit that you say you cannot do. I therefore do not understand your inability to edit -- particularly in view of your demonstrated ability to write about your inability to edit. (As for me, I loathe typing via anything less than eight fingers and a thumb, and wouldn't consider using any phone to post requests here.) -- Hoary (talk) 08:57, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed The isbn parameter contained the name of the holder of the 'original' of the source and the publisher parameter contained the title. Eagleash (talk) 09:03, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would concur with Hoary. While we appreciate you being on the lookout for things, there are not users here standing by to do the work you find that is needed, for you. It's time you learned to make some of these changes yourself using whatever means you have at your disposal. As noted, there are effective ways you can use phones to edit, and many people around the world do so successfully every day. 331dot (talk) 09:06, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree, and this has been going on for five years or so now. There has been no improvement in the editor's skills despite being helped dozens of times at least. Further, in this case, the error was not something they 'found' but something they 'did' as is usually the case. Sees the red error message (whether they read it or not is open to question) come running to the help desk expecting it to be fixed for them. WP:CIR has been mentioned more than once. Eagleash (talk) 09:20, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Eagleash, I'm in agreement. I think it is great that OP wants to improve articles, but it is reasonable to expect that, when someone helps you, to understand what was done so you can do it yourself next time. That said, perhaps this help desk is enabling the activity, but jumping to help whenever asked. As someone who likes to help others, I understand the desire to simply help and move on, but perhaps it is time to gently suggest that OP look back through previous requests and see how to handle the next one themselves.--S Philbrick(Talk) 11:38, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
From past experience, if not helped here at HD, the editor will go to a friendly editor's talk page and make similar requests. Usually they get helped here, if not by one of the regulars, then a 'casual' volunteer who doesn't know the background. Viz, Hoary's recent request about the device used; they were unaware of the long-term issue until I posted at their TP. The failure to take note of *any* advice given is particularly frustrating. FWIW, there was an ANI 2 or 3 years ago did not yield any result. Eagleash (talk) 12:04, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is almost certainly caused either by an issue with your device or your network connection. Is there any unusual behavior with images on other websites? If you have an adblocker or other browser extension running in your phone's browser, it could be blocking the images from loading for some reason. Or your Internet service provider could be filtering images. Can you try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular "data" if possible and seeing whether that makes a difference? Image from Geograph.co.uk

Hi - I often use images from geograph.co.uk which are already on commons. I would like to use this image in an article, but I can't seem to find a copy of it on commons - am I looking wrong? They're usually all there already, do I have to upload that one? Thanks GirthSummit (blether) 15:10, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not seeing that image on Commons—it's not in the "Cullen House" or "Earls of Seafield" categories, where one would expect to find it if it were there. If you run across a Geograph image that has not already been uploaded to Commons, you can certainly upload it yourself. (I've done this several times, as with File:Pierowall Lady Kirk - geograph.org.uk - 953499.jpg.) Be sure to include the Geograph template when you upload the file.

Deor sorry, I'm a bit of a newb on uploading to commons. I'm looking at the upload wizard, but it's not giving me any options (that I can see?) to upload with a template (or even to select a CC2.0 license). What do I actually have to do to make that happen - is there a 'how to' somewhere. GirthSummit (blether) 15:57, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Girth Summit I have in the past successfully made use of this tool, but frustratingly it's not working right now. Mikenorton (talk) 16:12, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Girth Summit: I haven't uploaded anything to Commons for a while, but don't the "Release rights", "Describe", and "Add data" steps of the wizard give one the opportunity to add such stuff? If you're having trouble, you might ask at the Commons Help desk, or perhaps someone will come along here with the necessary info. Deor (talk) 16:16, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Deor, annoyingly, the 'Release rights' step only give you a series of tick-box options - CC4.0, 3.0, 2.5, or 0.0 - CC2.0 isn't an option. I'll ask at the helpdesk. Mikenorton - going by the name, that tool looks like it would be perfect! But it's not working for me either :( Thanks both GirthSummit (blether) 16:23, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Biased editor spam-edits wiki-article. How do I fix it?

Someone spammed the 'Operation Ivory Coast' page on April 2, 2020 with biased edits to the point that it can't be reverted back to the last NPOV version dated March 4, 2020.

The main issue is that the article, as modified by the last editor, is now heavily biased to the point that the article itself cannot be taken seriously. Considering a redirect and/or disambiguation

I think it would be helpful if Boys, be ambitious or some variation of it redirected to William S. Clark. He is the source of the motto, which is known throughout Japan, and I've often seen it quoted in Japanese media without further attribution. It took me more than a few roundabout clicks to find the article explaining it. I know there's enough precedent for famous sayings redirecting to their source. However, what's stopping me from just creating the redirect right now is the existing article for Boys Be Ambitious, a 1996 movie named after that exact motto - and the possibility other readers wouldn't use it. How would I phrase any hatnotes on the pages in question, if the redirect does belong? Airbag190 (talk) 00:55, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm proposing a new article about Adam Lowe, a significant figure in the art/digital technology world. Lowe is already mentioned in a couple of places on wikipedia, but the mentions had been mistakenly linked to an article about another Adam Lowe (a writer, performer and publisher). I have deleted these incorrect links, and am preparing a disambiguation page alongside the biography page, but was wondering if someone could tell me how to make a new red link for the new Adam Lowe. @Anachorism: You make a redlink the same way you make a bluelink: with brackets. I suggest you use a redlink that would match the new article name, like Adam Lowe (artist) (although you would probably use the pipe character like [[Adam Lowe (artist)|Adam Lowe]], so it would look like Adam Lowe). @Anachorism: There is a way to change the name of a page - see Wikipedia:Moving a page. GoingBatty (talk) 13:58, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Anachorism: You'll want to write the article first before proposing a page move. And you likely will want to use a shorter descriptive phrase than Adam Lowe (arts and digital technology innovator) as in Factum Arte olderwiser 14:02, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Redirecting

Hello. I have moved a draft to mainspace. However in the title the surname of the person which the article was about was spelt incorrectly. The only way I could find to change the title was by redirecting. This worked to change the surname in the title. However now the article will only appear if you type in the incorrect name, it directs to the correctly titled page. So if someone searched for the article by searching for name as it should be spelt it doesn't show show. It only shows if you type in the incorrect name, then redirects to the right page. I hope that makes sense.

How will I be able to make it that the correct name shows the actual(and correct) article?

Hope that makes sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HWL12345 (talkcontribs) 14:45, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Typing in "Adam Dillon" offers the correct article name - it may have not done so immediately after the move. Having said that, i'm not at all clear on the notability of the subject of the article. The sourcing looks insufficient. Mikenorton (talk) 16:26, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    RM

Can an adim complete this RM: [1]. I didn't know semi-protection prevented editors with page mover rights from moving an article. Jerm (talk) 21:04, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please Create Section for Pandemic Unemployment Benefits "PUA" in the USA

Please add a section on Pandemic Unemployment Benefits to the existing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment_benefits_in_the_United_States and I will help with primary and secondary sourcing. A table for each state's status and website might be in order.

A disambiguation entry is also in order.

    Thanks.

    Problem Creating A Page

I was trying to create a page for a soccer player for the Kansas City Comets by the name of John Sosa, but it has been denied. I can't figure out what I need to do to fix it. Could you help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipert22 (talkcontribs) 23:06, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipert22 Hello; as you were told by reviewers, the player does not seem to meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable soccer/football player, written at WP:NFOOTY- or the more general general notability guideline. There also seems to be some question as to whether the league this player is in is fully professional, and you were advised to consult the Football WikiProject for advice. I would add that Wikipedia has articles, not mere "pages". 331dot (talk) 23:12, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to add summary under search term

    Hi wiki-friends!

I noticed that most articles have a short summary in the search box while typing. For example if you type William Shakespeare in the search box, the caption "English playwrite and poet (1564 -1616)" shows up under his name in the search. But none of the articles I have written have one. Do I need to do something special to have one added?

    @Brykeller: See Wikipedia:Short description. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:42, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Sherbet lemon

The section about sherbet lemons was removed from Sherbet as unreferenced. Even though not being British and never having eaten a genuine British sherbet lemon, googling for "sherbet lemon" reveals oodles of sites verifying these sweets exist. The thing is, pretty much all of them go to single manufacturers or retailers of sherbet lemons, which may not be notable and which might be considered promotion, although I am not in any way affialated with any of them. What could be considered a reliable source? JIP | Talk 00:36, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: Could you please confirm that you are referring to the Sherbet disambiguation page, or are you referring to a different article? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:52, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, sorry, I was referring to Sherbet (powder). JIP | Talk 00:54, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: One way to do this would be to be bold and restore the sections with a couple references. Another way would be to provide some references on Talk:Sherbet (powder) and invite the user to who deleted the section to discuss the options. GoingBatty (talk) 01:14, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 17 was tricky to do (there is no publisher) and it is in red - please fix. I cannot. Sorry 175.33.49.35 (talk) 01:00, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

     Fixed! All you needed to do was to change |accessdate=April 142020 to |accessdate=April 14, 2020. GoingBatty (talk) 01:16, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, changing to |accessdate=14 April 2020 is the better option to be consistent with the other references. GoingBatty (talk) 01:17, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 34 = DISASTER - Apologies, I cannot work it out at all.
