Early history of Weightlifting

Do you know if weightlifting in Armenia has a history before the Soviet era? While wrestling and boxing are more traditional, it seems weightlifting and gymnastics became popular because they were popular sports in the Soviet Union; I'm not sure though. --TheShadowCrow (talk) 18:48, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

So should we take Early history off of the history section and mention in the Soviet era one that this is when weightlifting first became popular in Armenia? Hi Yerevanci. I'm sorry for a late reply. Thanks for your interest in the topic. Here're are a few sources I found about chess in Georgia: [1], [2], [3], [4]. The last two are in Georgian and I'll translate it as time permits. As for the Tbilisi Chess Palace, it is a modern building and is, according to the Georgian law, copyrighted. Wrestling reply

For the European Championships.. yeah, that's probably a good idea. Actually, I was thinking of going back to organize all the medals in the order of which they were won (most already are, but definitly not all) but this solves the problem completely. If you want to seperate the European GR and FS medals, I think it's a good idea.

But I'm not sure if we should do it for the World and (espically) Olympic medals... yet. Olympic would look wierd because there's only one freestyle medal. Not really a point. Armenian wrestling

Yeah I wish there was somewhere we could go to find the 2011 and 2012 info.

I have to disagree on both of those choices.

Both of us didn't expect to find a women medalist and I bet many Armenians will be thinking the same. So I bet they'd also be suprised and happy to see they're wrong. And Women's wrestling could pick up in popularity and success at any time.

As for the world cup... I kind of agree because I don't think Armenia will come in the top 3 again any time soon, but on the other hand, this is an important phase for Armenian wrestling. This is the first major international wrestling competition Armenia hosted and is an important part of Armenian wrestling history.

So I say keep both.

Questions and ideas

I've decided to move forward with the idea of ethnic Armenian Olympians. Do you know how to make categories?

Also, this might sound like a bad idea, so I just want to get your opinion, but do you think it would be a good idea if, on the List of Armenian Olympic medalists page, for Olympic medalists who competed for the Soviet Union, we put somewhere which Soviet Republic they competed for?

The point would be to show who would have actually represented Armenia in the scenario that the Soviet Union was never formed and who wouldn't.

For example, Vladimir Yengibaryan would have won his medal for Armenia because he was born in the Armenian SSR and lived there his whole career, while someone like Nikita Simonyan would be an Olympic medalist for Russia even if the Soviet Union wasn't formed.

We would have to be careful which Republic they lived in. Like, even though Albert Azaryan was born in the Azerbaijan SSR, he moved to the Armenian SSR at a young age and has lived there ever since. --TheShadowCrow (talk) 00:52, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Yeah I knew it wouldn't look great. I was thinking of creating another section with their Soviet Republic and putting "N/A" in all the ones that aren't the USSR, but I like the idea of point out the ones that are from the Arm SSR best. Perhaps we could italiic something or change the color of a box. Just ideas.

I define as the family roots. Turkish-Armenian person's some or all ancestors emigrated from Turkey to America. I think Turkish-Armenian naming is not a mixed blooded person. Perhaps this category should be deleted? Esc2003 (talk) 17:09, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Regarding some recent Armenian article changes

This user who goes by the name of Kentronhayastan [5], Ive noticed his edits for a while now, and they are not exactly describing who he really is. I mean to clarify to you, what im saying is if you notice his edits on the Armenian articles, he pretends he is doing good to the Armenian history, but in fact, he is corrupting it in a clever way. He is an imposter actually. I noticed for example he added a whole bunch of foreign languages to all the articles on our history, and someone else did a good job of reverting those. He basically is POV pushing just about any time in our history articles of foreign rule. He tried to put Islam in all the history articles, hah, and included like 10 other languages, where it says languages. The person that reverted him did a good job and restored the native language Armenian to be the only main language of those times. Specially the Kingdoms of Armenia , whether they were Ancient, or the Modern kingdoms like Bagratuni, and the Antiquity. He also had purposely removed the Marzpanate Mamikonian period, and the other person asked him to restore it back. Also if you can help out please restore back where it says "Armenia Major" in the Antiquity, to "Kingdom of Armenia", this is what it said earlier and this guy Kentronhayastan reverted it back to Armenia Major. Its suppose to say Kingdom of Armenia, because the only Kingdom of Armenia mentioned first is in the Middle Ages. Its showing that there was no Kingdom of Armenia in ancient times? If you notice he recently also changed Commagene to "Kingdom of Commagene", but didnt change Armenia Major to "Kingdom of Armenia". Please put back the name "Kingdom of Armenia", in our antiquity. Thank you. And if you can also remove Armeno-Phrygian from the History template also, because that was never there, and this imposter which im suspicious of is trying to ruin our history. Also he is the one that made the new image for the Template [6], the one with the Armenian eternity symbol and Mount Ararat with Khor Virap there in that image on the Template History of Armenia. It use to be the Coat of Arms of Armenia, but now he put this new one which is good. But he wants to restore back the Coat of Arms, when he himself made this new image. He is purposely doing this just to ruin Armenian history and culture. Please vote to keep the new image of eternity symbol and Ararat , instead of the Coat of Arms, which is only about the Modern history. This image is better cause its about all the History etc etc. So when he puts, of if he puts a vote, please vote for the current image on the template. Map Comments

Hello Yerevanci,

In regards to this map of yours--, very nice job. However, there are a couple of errors and things that I'd like to point out:

• Race and ethnicity are often used interchangeably, and thus it's better to just have all of the countries that enumerate or have previously enumerated people by race and/or ethnicity be in one color (such as red)
• Your map does not have South Sudan as a separate country (this is more of a minor thing, considering that South Sudan became independent in 2011)
• Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria, Angola, the Bahamas, Bahrain, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Brunei, Burma, Burundi, Cape Verde, the Central African Republic, Chad, Chile, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Cote D'Ivoire, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Lesotho, Mali, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, Vatican City, Vietnam, Yemen, Botswana, Namibia, and all of the former USSR needs to be colored in red. All of these countries also enumerated their population by race and/or ethnicity at some period in time, and some of them still enumerate their population by race and/or ethnicity right now. If you're going by countries that did this since 1991, then Bosnia and Herzegovina and Namibia would count, since they did this in 1991. Bahrain, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Brunei, Chad, Chile, China, Gabon, Ghana, Guyana, Indonesia, Ireland, Jamaica, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, Nepal, Panama, Slovakia, Vietnam, and Yemen should also be included, since they fit into your category. I added info for some countries since you made your map, which might help explain the discrepancy. Burma should have its own color/category, since it would not fit your since 1991 criteria just yet, but it will with its new census in 2014. Futurist110 (talk) 21:30, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Very nice job on the revised map but there are still a couple of errors. Belize and Vietnam need to be colored red. Nepal also needs to be colored red while Bhutan needs to be colored gray--you mixed those two up on your map. Finally, it would be nice to have color Burma pink since they will have a census for race/ethnicity in two years but it will be their first one in over 20 years. Finally, I added a category for Singapore on my article as well, so Singapore needs to be colored red as well. Also, some tiny island countries (such as Fiji) need to be colored in, but feel free to ignore them on the map since they are too tiny and insignificant (and since the article already mentions them anyway). • Levon Ter-Petrosyan
• Levon Aronian
• Sirusho
• Monte Melkonian
• Kirk Kerkorian

And the outclusion of Cher because she doesn't consider her biological father to be her "real father."

Glad we could agree on Cher. She didn't even know she was Armenian for a lot of her life. She has no business being there.

Shahinyan important in my opinion and i got a neat picture of him I'm uploading later. we can decide then. I understans two chess players might seem to much, but they are both from different eras and chess is a big part of Armenian culture. Kerkorian was ranked in the top 50 richest men of all time. I think he's very important. I know you and a lot of people don't like LTP but there's no denying his signifigance. When there are more Armenian presidents, he will very important for being the first. Copyright question about a map

Regarding this map which you submitted: File:Northern artsakh ethnic map.png. The copyright info says that the map was created by Samvel Karapetian, but is now in the public domain. However, the cited source is a PDF report, which bears these notices: © Samvel Karapetian, 2007, © Research on Armenian Architecture (RAA) Organization. So how do we know that this map is in the public domain? The banner says

The person who associated a work with this deed has dedicated the work to the public domain by waiving all of his or her rights to the work worldwide under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights, to the extent allowed by law. You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.

Yurik Vardanyan

Hi. You've probably seen it already, but what do you think of the current Vardanyan article? I remember you called him your favorite Olympian so I wanted to be sure you saw it.

The article is near perfect. There's just two problems. First of all, I didn't say exactly why or when Yurik returned to Armenia. Second, There are mentions on some Armenian news sites about him having some sort of current political position (Two examples: http://news.am/eng/news/1390.html http://news.am/eng/news/38790.html) but none specify exactly what that is.

I was wondering if you could help me find the answers, because I bet there is an article somewhere in Armenian or Russian that has the answers I need. If it helps, I believe the Vardanyan's returned to Armenia some time between 2007-2010. --TheShadowCrow (talk) 23:48, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

I haven't seen any such list, and I'm not sure the electoral authorities of Lebanon maintain such a listing. To be clear regarding Lebanese elections, the candidates are identified by religion whilst the voters aren't. Each seat in parliament is earmarked for a particular religious community, but the eligible voters are all the inhabitants in the area from all religions. E4024 considers it uncivil because prior conversations the two of you had make it very clear that neither one of you considers the other a friend. Attacks on cemetery and monastery - please stop calling these anti-Armenian without evidence

You will need sources saying that this is anti-Armenian. What the articles say it that two Christian sites, a non-Armenian monastery and an Armenian cemetery were attacked. Help with a song?

Hi Yerevanci,

This is kind of a random request and isn't really related to Wikipedia matters at all, but I require the help of a native Armenian speaker to help me decipher a song in Armenian. You are the first editor with such qualifications that comes to my mind from the few passing interactions we've had (I'm the guy who helped defend you from some bullying by a local AA-area clique back when you started out, remember? :D), so I figured I'd ask you.

Anyway, the song I'm trying to work out is called "Bari Aragil" (Բարի Արագիլ), specifically this version performed by Serj Tankian (of SOAD fame) and Khachatour Tankian in what is I believe the Western dialect. My main concern is less any translation and more the original Armenian—I like picking up bits and pieces of pretty much any language I can get my hands on, and songs are a great way to do that. I'm working on compiling a text document on my computer at the moment with the Armenian song lyrics in Armenian script, with parallel ad hoc Eastern and Western transliterations; I may try to make a good translation further down the road as well.

Using Armenian lyrics found online for different versions (e.g. [7]) as well as this transliteration of the lyrics and some online translators and dictionaries, I've managed to piece together most of the song. I think I have everything except the 5th stanza (by the reckoning of the "transliteration" link), which has me pretty stumped. This is what I have for that part thus far; gaps in my understanding are indicated:

I'm more than happy to help you. Let me give you some information about the song's origin. The lyrics were written by Ashot Grashi in Eastern Armenian, probably in 1940s, though I'm not sure, because I couldn't find the exact date. The music is by Alexey Ekimyan, who was the head of Criminal Investigation Department of Moscow during the Soviets, which is very hard to imagine. Anyway, the song is very popular in Armenia and I don't think you can find one person who never heard it in their lifetime. My grandpa used to sing it also and now when he's dead the value of "Bari Aragil" is even more greater for me.

The version you mentioned (Tankian's) is more of an improvisation than just a performance of the song. As you may already know, Tankian was born in Lebanon, where Armenians speak the Western dialect, because the overwhelming majority of Lebanese Armenians are Armenian Genocide survivors and their descendants.

This version by Shusan Petrosyan is more closer to the original, but I do like Tankian's version better, because he and his dad sing it with more emotions.

The 5th stanza you're talking about isn't part of the original lyrics and it was added by Tankian. I don't where it is from and why Tankian chose to incorporate it into the song. --Երևանցի ^talk 17:15, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Hm, interesting. I figured it had some history behind it, but didn't have time to sift through all the Serj-related links and whatnot to find a good examination on the history. I'd listened to the Petrosyan version as well during my attempts to reconstruct the song, but I like the Tankians' version much better as well—both for their emotions, as you put it, as a longtime Serj/SOAD fan.

It's hard to translate, but I'l give it a try.

Yar is a colloquial word meaning "dear", mostly used in a romantic way. Sometimes it can mean boyfriend/girlfriend. In this case, it seems to be a nice way of calling the stork.

I don't know whjat ya dayr means. I don't thinks that's a word, even in the Western dialect. I tried to closely listen what Serj is saying, but couldn't understand. It basically says, "Come with me, kind stork"

"Ya dayr" (sounds to me closer to "yai dar", but I don't really know) is where I've found myself stuck as well. Can't seem to find a combination of letters there that yields a meaningful result in any dictionary or translator. Like I said, the original Armenian is what interests me most here. Now, I think Future Sun had some justification to go about deleting the article without submitting it to a vote. There have been instances when certain articles denying the genocide have been speedily deleted and permanently banned from future creation. The topic is a good one, but the title was not. "Falsification of history in Azerbaijan", even if an article with such a name exists on Russian Wiki, comes off as too strong in damning the entire field and sounds more like an essay than an encyclopedia title. If the article is on the Caucasian Albanians, then a much better title would have been "Historiography of Caucasian Albania in Azerbaijan" or if it includes, for example, Nizami, then "Historiography in Azerbaijan," and divide it by subject title.--Marshal Bagramyan (talk) 18:19, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
