Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!
Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according to Humaniki, only 19.82% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red!

In April 2022, for the first time we are embarking on a three-month translation contest or "translatathon" focused on the translation of biographies of women from other language versions of Wikipedia. For each of the three months, April, May and June, there will be virtual awards for the top three contributors of acceptable new translated articles. There will also be special recognition for the top contributor over the full three-month period as well as for the contributor who has translated from the most different languages over the full three months. If they wish, contributors may translate from the same foreign language throughout the contest. (Translations from English into other languages are not acceptable for this contest.)

Translations from any language are welcome. On Wikipedia, the most popular languages for translation into English have been (in decreasing order) German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese and Czech. Further details can be seen under Category:Translated pages.

While it is preferable for contributors to have at least a reading knowledge of the language to be translated, for some language combinations Google Translate and other machine translation tools provide a level of translation which can be used as a basis for producing articles of acceptable standards for the English Wikipedia. Articles which do not reach these standards are likely to be deleted. It is therefore important for contributors to ensure machine translations are fully checked and copy-edited.

When translating content from a foreign-language Wikipedia, you must provide attribution to the original contributor(s). This is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've translated content, disclosing the translation and linking to the translated page, e.g., Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution. It is good practice to also place a properly formatted {{translated page}} template on the talk page of your translation. In this connection, see the adjacent box "Add to article talk pages".

In line with other Wikipedia contests, articles must have at least 160 words or 1,000 characters of running text (excluding references, lists, boxes and headings) and should have at least two reliable secondary references (three for biographies of living people). Articles translated from shorter versions in other languages will qualify only if they are extended to meet these requirements.

In order to facilitate assessment of the number of languages translated, for each contribution you should list the language of the Wikipedia article you have translated. While some contributors may wish to provide translations which reflect the presentation of the articles translated, others many prefer to adapt their presentation to additional or alternative sources. All contributions should however be based on articles published in other language versions of Wikipedia.

In order to participate, contributors must be members of Women in Red. Anyone can register as a member by using the box on the main WiR page.

Please use this article's talk page if you need assistance or wish to comment on the contest.

We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in translating biographies of women from the other language versions of Wikipedia. While our top priority is new biographies, translations of articles about the works, organizations or achievements of women are also welcome.

The main goals of the event are:

    • to extend coverage of women on the English Wikipedia
    • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
    • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on this specific area
    • to support Wikipedia in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
    • to promote new articles and images through social media (Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter)

    What else?

    • Below, you'll see a section where you can list the articles you create this month, and another section where you can add the images you have uploaded to Commons.
    • This essay on creating women's biographies and our Ten Simple Rules might be helpful.
    • If you tweet about any of the articles, or upload any of the images to Pinterest, please indicate you have done so next to the article name.

Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)

Red-link lists on women from a wide variety of fields can be accessed from the WiR Redlink index. Our Wikidata-based redlists (generally marked WD) are likely to be useful in identifying articles which exist in other language versions. These are usually indicated as site links although such links can sometimes refer to images and other items rather than articles.

Add other red links here, if possible with a source:

    Key:

    • Add FB after the article if you mention it on Facebook
    • Add PIN after the article if you pin the image on Pinterest
    • Add TW after the article if you tweet it on Twitter
    • Add IG after the article if you post in on Instagram

Newly created articles which meet contest rules: May

Please list in the order created (i.e. the oldest at the top). Participants should then list further articles immediately below the first article they create. This will help to establish the number of articles created by each participant. The sequence should be:

    # {{flagicon|country}} [[article title]], translated from (specify language), new article by ~~~~, the four tildes representing user name and date created.
Remember articles need to have a running text or readable prose size of 160 words or 1,000 characters. Articles which are not long enough may be listed separately under "Newly-created articles which do not meet contest rules: April". You can check the length of any article by using Xtools article info and looking under "Prose" for characters and words. (Please do not use this tool to check more than two or three articles at a time or you will overload the system.)
