Long-term injuries

Congenital abnormality in Maduro's heart

Out between: July 2012 – September 2012

On 28 July, Sevilla FC officially announced that Hedwiges Maduro suffers a congenital anomaly in his heart. It was detected in a special examination by physicians during the second part of the team's summer concentration in Costa Ballena, near Rota, and it is an anomaly which is not possible to detect in standard tests. As the gravity of this anomaly wasn't known, the club preferred to preserve confidentiality in this matter. The club said days after that the player had traveled to Houston, Texas, for an examination and a full diagnosis. Maduro said after the first extensive revisions made in Spain that his life was not in danger. After being investigated in Houston by Dr. Paolo Angelini, Sevilla FC medical services made public that Maduro's abnormality will not prevent him from playing football professionally, so they could rejoin the squad normally in late August. Consequently, he could play, if Míchel wants, the matchday 3 in Vallecas against Rayo Vallecano on 2 September.

Trochowski's knee injury

Out between: September 2012 – May 2013

After scoring the first goal of the match between FC Barcelona and Sevilla on 29 September, Piotr Trochowski had to retire with a knee injury. Sevilla's medical services analyzed his illness during the following days. The treatment he received first failed, and doctors thought it was appropriate to operate him in late October in Denver, Colorado. After the surgery, the club told press that the time without playing would be eight months, figuring that his reappearance could be in May 2013, so he would miss the remainder of the season.

5th Champions for Africa

For the fifth consecutive time, Frédéric Kanouté and his foundation, along with support from UNICEF and other agencies and corporations, have organized this solidary friendly match in order to help children in Africa in areas such as health and education, especially in the recently opened Sakina, Ville des Enfants in Bamako (Mali). The game was played again in the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Seville because the match was also the official farewell and tribute for the Malian, who signed a new contract with Beijing Guoan in China after seven seasons playing for Sevilla. There were two teams composed by players from Liga BBVA, Liga Adelante, and Segunda División B. One of them, called "Sevilla FK", was composed entirely by Sevilla FC former and current players, and was led by Míchel, and the other one, called "Selección Champions" (in English, Champions Team), was led by Manolo Jiménez, Real Zaragoza coach and former Sevilla coach and player.
