Government Model Engineering College or MEC is an engineering college established by the government of Kerala, located in Thrikkakara, Kochi, Kerala, India. It is affiliated with Cochin University of Science and Technology and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University.

Academics

MEC offers four undergraduate programs, in Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Admission

The admission procedure and the fee structure for the B Tech. programmes are decided by the Government of Kerala. Admissions to the institution is based on merit in the Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination (KEAM) conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examination (CEE), Government of Kerala. The details are given in the admission prospectus published by Kerala State Entrance Commissioner under the Government self-financing colleges category. 15% of seats are reserved for the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) admission. The Admission to M.Tech courses are based on Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology, IITs.[1]

Departments

All courses are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation.[2]

Student activities

The foremost student body of the college is the Senate, which consists of elected representatives from each stream. The college has several students associations, of both technical and non-technical nature.

Technical associations

These include IEEE student's branch,[3] Electronics Association [Mixed Signals],[4] The Electrical Minds Forum(EMF), The MEC Association of Computer Students (MACS), The Biomedical Association (BMA), Model Amateur Radio Association(MARC), IETE Students Branch and a robotics Club named Cyborg.

Non-technical associations

These include Young Indians student net,[5] the Illuminati(quizzing fraternity),[6] the Music Club, and the National Service Society chapter.[7] The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (E-Cell) is a fully functioning student body registered under the Technology Business Incubator of the Government Model Engineering College, Cochin. The club provides a platform for students with ideas to convert them into business reality and its aim is to foster a student start-up culture in the institution.[8]

Excel

Excel is the annual technical-management festival of the College. The event is held over a period of three days and is conducted in association with the IEEE Student Branch of the college.[9] The festival has been held every year since its inception in 2001. It has been held as an All India Annual Technical Fest since its beginning in 2001.[10] The 20th edition[11] of Excel was held on November 2019.

Arts and sports

There are arts and sports festivals conducted every year by the college senate. The College Senate will divide students into 4 houses, each having one captain and a vice captain. The houses compete with each other for the Arts, Sports and Overall trophies across multiple events. Houses are formed exclusively for the arts and sports competitions and are dissolved soon after. There will be a College inauguration ceremony. Arts and Sports festivals will be conducted annually in the even semesters. The Arts festival of the university is named Sargam which was later changed to Layatharang. 'Chakravyuh is the name given to the annual sports meet. MEC was the overall champion of CUSAT inter-college arts fest SARGAM-2013 continuously for the third time.[12][13][14][15]
