Amritsar BRTS (Amritsar MetroBus) is the bus rapid transit system currently operational in Amritsar, Punjab, India and is the first hybrid public transportation of India to be a hybrid between a Bus Rapid Transit and a Metro Rail.[7] BRTS had to start operation in December 2015.[8] The project was commenced on 19 September 2013.[9] Amritsar BRTS is based on Ahmedabad BRTS model.[10] The BRTS will operate with 93 Air-conditioned buses. This project would allow easy travel to different places in city like the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Guru Nanak Dev University and Khalsa College.[11][12] Amritsar BRTS is constructed on the lines of Metrobus (Istanbul).[13] Volvo Buses showed its interest in BRTS project at the holy city of Amritsar.[14]

Key features

Some of the key features of Amritsar BRTS are:[15]

  • Automatic Doors at metro Stations for passengers safety.
  • Overheard bridges for pedestrians
  • Two different lanes for movement of buses in both directions.
  • Intersections will act as boarding place for the buses.
  • Complete Air conditioned buses.
  • Automated doors of all buses.
  • Lifts for commuters at Metro Stations on elevated corridor.
  • A special Metro Card similar to that like in Metro Rails.
  • Smart Announcements at Metro Stations and in Metro Buses similar to those in Metro Raiways.
  • Retrofitted Metro Stations on elevated corridor.
  • Amritsar MetroBus and Amritsar City Bus service will complement each other to provide feasibility to commuters.

Approved corridors

A 31 km route will be having 3 corridors[16]:

  • Atari Road – ISBT to India Gate via Bhandari Bridge, GNDU, Chheharta (12 km)
  • Jalandhar Road – ISBT to MCA Gate via Tarawalan Pul (6 km)
  • Verka Road – ISBT to Verka via Hussainpura Bridge, G. T. Road Bypass (13 km)

Currently Vekra Road corridor is operational.

Proposed corridors

There are planned 7 Corridors for Amritsar BRTS.[17]

  • Sham Singh Attari Wala gate and Bhandari Bridge[18] to India Gate
  • Bhandari Bridge to Daburji[19]
  • Daburji Bypass to Verka
  • Verka to Celebration Mall[20]
  • Celebration Mall to Sant Singh Sukha Singh Chowk
  • 4S Chowk to Kitchlu Chowk
  • Kitchlu Chowk to Old Sadar Police Station

Construction

Varaha Infra Ltd a company based in Jodhpur (Rajasthan) is executing this project. Construction work started on 26 February 2015. As of September 2016, 90% of work has been completed.[21] As of July 2018, The project is to be inaugurated on 15 October 2018 with full scale as six out of 47 bus stations with one bus stand are still under completion.[22] The transportation system is completely free for school students in uniform up to senior secondary classes. After launch first three month project will be free of cost for commuters.[23]
