Steno (Martian crater)

Steno is an impact crater on Mars, located in the Mare Australe quadrangle at 68.0°S latitude and 115.6°W longitude, and is inside the limits of Aonia Terra near Terra Sirenum. It measures 106.9 kilometers in diameter and was named after Danish scientist Nicolas Steno (1638–1686). The name was approved in 1973, by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature.

Nearby prominent and named craters are Lamont further north, Smith to the east, Lau to the south-southeast, Chamberlin to the west-northwest and Dokuchaev in the northwest. Also in that location near Chamberlin are the Phaethontis and the Thaumasia quadrangles.

Steno has a small central mountain. Northeast is a smaller unnamed crater with a smaller ghost crater inside. Along the western rim is a smaller crater. Northwest of Steno is a mid-size crater with a central mountain.
