Tulsipur is a nagar panchayat town in the Balrampur district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The town is a main station on the Gorakpur-Gonda railway line, which was reclassified from a meter gauge to a broad gauge railway in August 2016.

The town is not officially classified as a municipal board. It however has a much larger population than some other official municipal boards in India.

Geography

Tulsipur is located on the bank of River Nakti (also known as River Siria) and is 23 km from the Koilabas, located on the Nepali border to India, and 190km from the Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. It is located 28km from the Utraula District [1]. It has an average elevation of 109 metres (357 feet) above sea level.

The nearest regional airport is Shravasti Airport (45km), with the nearest international airport being Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (200km) in Lucknow.

Tourism and culture

In August of 2016, the railway line was converted from a meter gauge to a broad gauge railway, and since then, Tulsipur has become more effectively connected with other major Indian cities. The temple of Maa Pateshwari (also known as Devi Patan) is located in Tulsipur, which is a popular Hindu temple and tourist destination. According to Hindu mythology, the temple is one of 51 Shakti-Preethas of the Goddess of Durga. The temple is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year with many visiting during the Durga Puja, an annual festival celebrated across India to celebrate the Goddess of Durga. The temple includes a famous sculpture called "Surya Kund", which according to Hindu mythology was made by Karna of the Mahabharata in honour of Surya, his father and the God of the Sun.

Other annual events that attract a large number of visitors to Tulsipur include the Devi Patan Mela, a mela during Chaitra Navratri (usually in the month of April) and "Shoba Yatra" of Peer Ratan Nath, where devotees from the District of Dang, Nepal come to the town as an integral part of their pilgrimage (known as "yatra" in Hindi).

The Maharani Ishwari Devi from Tulsipur played a famous role in the Kranti of 1857, a series of rebellions against the British colonisation of India through the East India Company. The town is also famous for its Hanuman Garhi Mandir, which is the tallest building in Uttar Pradesh.

Demographics

As of the 2011 India census report, the town has a population of 24,488, split of which 52.5% male and 47.5% female. c.15.1% of the population are children under the age of 6, and the literacy rate is 68.6% (versus the state average of 67.7%). The male literacy is much higher at an average of 74.9%, versus 61.5% for women.

Tulispur is split into 15 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. Tulsipur's nagar panchayat has governance over 3,776 houses, and is responsible for providing basic amenities, such as access to clean water and sewage services. It is additionally authorized to build roads within the town, and impose taxes on the properties within its jurisdiction.

History

The House of Tulsipur ruled one of the largest Taluqs of Oudh, India which then included the Dang and Deukhuri Valleys. Therefore it also counted as one of the Baise Rajya (Nepali: बाइसे राज्य; 22 Principalities), a confederation in what became western Nepal. The town shares its name with another Tulsipur in Dang Deukhuri District, Nepal (c.65k North); the two towns are linked by historically have the same ruler.
