I don't really see the need to reorganize Manitoba Hydro to exactly parallel the organization of Hydro-Québec; the two articles are roughly similar now in organization. I wouldn't like to expand the Manitoba Hydro history section with much more detail unless I had more reference material, which I have not yet acquired. Thanks for the heads-up notice and good luck with the translation. --Wtshymanski (talk) 03:15, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BC Hydro translation....

[edit]

I think you'd better explain to me why various items were not translated, e.g. the BCUC's rejection of the government's plans re the IPPs, and the government's neutering of that body in response....and similar matters. The remaining cited material seem only to come from BC Hydro sources, which please note are COI in nature....at present the French translation reads even more like a company/government press release than the original did....your "selective translation" comes off as POV.....Skookum1 (talk) 04:28, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the English article at present has, in my opinion, too much promotional material on certain of the IPPs, which are not part of BC Hydro's operations. A revision of the English article concerning that I haven't yet assayed, but suffice to say that the widespread public opposition to run of the river and other allegedly "green" power projects (they're not, despite their own hype and the government's) needs more coverage....this article should not more feature BC Hydro's obliged-to-buy-from customers s than it does its major consumers....there's a lot wrong with the English article, especially its governmental tone and the absence of any of the very real politics which are part of the corporation's history, and also its current neutering by the provincial government, which (as not said in either article but should be) t he fact that the purchase rates of power from these IPPs is three times the market rate and is likely to bankrupt the corporation finally and totally; which is why the BCUC objected, and why the head of BC Hydro has been relieved of his duties (can't remember right now if he quit, or was fired...) and someone else more compliant manoeuvred into position.....(rumoured to be a senior burueaucrat until recently attached to the Premier's Office...). This is all very complicated material...but even what fragmentary bits there are about it on the English article are, so far as I can see (unless I just haven't read closely enough) entirely absent from the French version.....company articles always have COI problems; this one's glaringly COI, especially in your French version....Skookum1 (talk) 04:38, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DJ Dam

[edit]

Hey Bouchecl, I decided my next project is going to be the Daniel-Johnson Dam. I found some decent references and will getting plugging away at an expansion. Most are French but Google translate will suffice with the basics. If I have any questions, I know a French speaker, ahum. I know you are busy but feel free to help out. If you are really interested but busy, I can hold off as well.--NortyNort (Holla) 13:32, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow. I see you have done a lot already. It looks good! I wasn't going to start until later today but I see there are some other sections that need expanding. I can think of two really interesting DYKs for this article as well, if it hits 5x which I think it will.--NortyNort (Holla) 21:48, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, that's good you have direct experience with the dam. I am getting my references and knowledge together and will start adding to the sections article in a few hours. Too bad I can't understand what the video in the external link is saying. There is also a 1971 book, Manic 5: the building of the Daniel Johnson Dam that I would love to get my hands on. It doesn't cost much on the internet but also won't get to me anytime soon. The biggest info gap I have now is the construction and how it progressed.--NortyNort (Holla) 03:16, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The info for the book can be found here at Amazon. I would be interested in that book you have and would definitely use it. I guess I would need a Scribd account...how big is the file? For now, I have some basic info about the construction and will transclude the rest of the construction section from French Wiki as well as expand the dam and reservoir subsections tonight.--NortyNort (Holla) 03:38, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whew! I am done with the majority of my part of the expansion. I will add more info throughout the next few days while I rest on the subject a bit. Thanks a lot for the references, they were clutch. I got DjView and that booklet had a ton of great info in it along with the Popular Science article. I just need to tie up the end of construction a bit. Apparently, there was cracking in the dam after the reservoir was filled, so I will research that. In the meantime, I nominated our expansion here at DYK and provided three different but interesting hooks. Let me know what you think. Maybe we can combine the original and ALT1. It usually takes about two weeks before it is reviewed and put on the front page so we have some time. Also, the reason I put citations in the lead (or lede) of the article is because it helps in the DYK nomination review. Normally I don't like citing the lead.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:05, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I was actually thinking that we did a better job than the French article. As far as Johnson dying, I saw both the night before and in the morning in references. I guess it is hard to tell if one is sleeping in the night though. GA? Sure. Well I see some citations and references missing and I want to add more about the power houses. It seems pretty broad now and we have reliable sources. I think it can make it there after a little work. What do you think is missing? --NortyNort (Holla) 21:59, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like a good list. There was info on labor conditions in a bunch of sources along with more info on the concrete. I'll add it in periodically.--NortyNort (Holla) 02:13, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I made an article for Manic-1 today, it is small and I don't know if you have anything to add. I plan to do Outardes-2, Outardes-3 and Outardes-4 next.--NortyNort (Holla) 13:52, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Very nice! I wonder what the dam's dimensions are, so we could put a dam infobox in there. I am going to get working on the Outardes stations today. Also, if you are interested in dams, we kicked off WP:DAMS not too long ago if you want to join. We are almost done fixing the assessment chart and the assessment template. I have a headache from working on it today. --NortyNort (Holla) 05:08, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Outardes articles are started if you have anything extra or want to review em'. I was thinking of a "Manicouagan-Outardes project" article. What do you think? Also, it would be a good idea to rename this category in the meantime. --NortyNort (Holla) 15:08, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Southern Company

[edit]

Hi Bouchecl. I've read your greeting regarding the Southern Company entry and appreciate your guidance. You're probably right about submitting a draft, I didn't know to do that. I am fine with any purview -- that's to be expected. At this point, I'm not sure if you want help on verification or any other matter regarding the article. I've attempted to bring the facts up to date, as you can see from the early version, many were years out of date. It was also clear that no one had been keeping up with events surrounding the company for several years, I've pointed them out. The nuclear plant construction / federal loan guarantee announced by President Obama is particularly important, as are the Texas biomass and Turner solar plant developments. I bow to editorial judgement on some of the other facts but the Bush inauguration donation strikes me as something out of proportion and date. ("In addition to such PAC contributions, in 2005 Southern Company itself was among 53 entities that contributed the maximum of $250,000 to the second inauguration of President George W. Bush.[11][12][13]") Factual but not sure who cares at this point, corporate contributions of $6.9m to Project SHARE and other charities, and $10.6 million in grants to conservation organizations are more relavent.

http://www.southerncompany.com/corporateresponsibility/stewardship/performance.aspx http://www.southerncompany.com/corporateresponsibility/stewardship/wildlife.aspx http://www.southerncompany.com/corporateresponsibility/stewardship/ecosystems.aspx http://www.southerncompany.com/corporateresponsibility/stewardship/restoration.aspx

In regards to the clarifications noted as needed in the article, let me know what I can do to help, if anything. I'd like to be better at this.

Best wishes and thanks for your work.

Wcheerma (talk) 14:04, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bouchecl. Just noticed your revert comment on René Lévesque [1]. I fully agree with your rationale but I just wanted to note that while the usual etymology of 'province' does derive from vincere, the English meaning seems generally to be given not as "for the conquered" but "on behalf of the conquerors". Same sentiment though. --Saforrest (talk) 20:50, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Robert-Bourassa generating station

[edit]

Hello, I was rummaging through the WP:Dams "Top" importance articles and saw Robert-Bourassa generating station in there. I understand completely why the power station is of high importance, but I am not sure why the dam(s) are. I was thinking more along the lines of "High". Given, the article is also about the station in particular. Maybe I am wrong, if so let me know. I didn't want to change anything without asking you first. Thanks.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:14, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a few stats in the infobox to gauge the importance. Missing are the 29 dikes built north and south of the main dam. Its a big one. I really should write (re-write) Robert-Bourassa, LG-3, LG-4 and James Bay Project... Bouchecl (talk) 15:29, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, I am not terribly familiar with that project. Well, the dam isn't only big, but it supports two large power stations, one of which is the largest in the country. The reservoir is also gigantic, near top ten by volume in the world. The array of dams makes it quite a project and it was probably quite an undertaking, especially being where it is. I will help you out in an expansion if you need it. By the way, what are the largest and tallest dams in Canada?--NortyNort (Holla) 22:52, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You know what? I never checked! Dams are probably taller in British Columbia, reservoirs are larger in Quebec. It's a more difficult job than it seems at first glance, since BC Hydro doesn't release that information anymore (terrrrrrarist threat or something like that). That leaves libraries as the main source of information. The local university has a good collection of past BC Hydro, Manitoba Hydro annual reports. The information is probably right there. I'm going to have to take a look at it sooner or later. :) Bouchecl (talk) 23:48, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I should've checked before but according to the tallest list, it is the Mica Dam and from the largest list, the W. A. C. Bennett Dam or Syncrude Tailings Dam if you consider that eligible. I think the lists, at least the tallest one, are relatively accurate.--NortyNort (Holla) 02:14, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I read through Hydro-Quebec and left some comments in the relevant discussion on my talk page. I know it had been a few days, so I am leaving you a note here.--NortyNort (Holla) 22:16, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I responded back on my talkpage. I had done so originally to keep the conversation together. I can move it to the article's talk page or a peer review if you want. Also, I watch your talk page because we converse somewhat often. Talk pages can be a pain and so with people I talk to a lot, I leave the discussion on my page or theirs. For the infrequent folks, I do the "move back and forth" method.--NortyNort (Holla) 11:11, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

French infobox

[edit]

Hi

I know that you had some conflicts in french wikipedia, and I can really say that it is sad, because we are losing a great contributor. I am writing here because I don't know if you still check your french account (and in english, because we are on english wikipedia)

Anyway, I saw you have done the infobox énergie(pays), and I think some modifications are needed to make it more general. As you know, I have worked on fr:Énergie en Islande, which is indeed a special country, but in the section Bilan énergétique, geothermal power is not included, so I use géosolaire (because it looked similar in the name, although it has nothing in common), and now, it is included as électricité, while it is used mainly for district heating. So I thing it would be nice to have géothermie as a possible argument (and maybe print it as a standalone category if the % is greater than some value).

Also, in the section Électricité, géothermie is included, but printed in other, while it is in iceland 24% of the total. So maybe again, print this if the percentage is significant, else put it in other (might be hard to code this, I have no idea).

And now, I am working in fr:Énergie au Danemark, and here biomasse is important...

I would like if you could change this infobox, and I would like even more if you would come back in french wikipedia sometimes, your help is precious!

Hey Bouchecl, I wanted to get the article to GA review sometime in the near future or so. I think after adding a paragraph on Innu claims and those missing citations it should be mostly there. Haven't checked it in a while. I noticed you are a participant of the WikiProject Quebec.

The Outline of Quebec was created a few days ago and is under vigorous development. It fills a gap in Wikipedia's set of outlines. It is the 3rd outline to date about a Canadian province/territory.

Outlines form one of the subsystems of Wikipedia's contents navigation system. For more information on outlines, see Wikipedia:Outlines and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines.

The goals for the Outline of Quebec is to complete it to as high a standard of quality as possible, and to make it even better than the Outline of Saskatchewan and the Outline of British Columbia.

Once the Outline of Quebec is completed, it will provide an important example to others creating outlines for the remaining provinces and territories of Canada.

Please take a look at the outline to see if you can notice (and fill in) any missing topics. Pictures would also be nice (the rarer and the more interesting, the better).

Thank you.

I saw your work on the new Portal of Quebec and it looks amazing, very good job, keep up the work: I really want the portal to look like this and I'm sure its going to help expand the project. Also, you seem to be a very good contributor to the electricity sector in Canada (and Quebec) and, as I'm currently trying to expand the outline of Quebec and Quebec article itself, I was wondering if you'd be interested in spending some time on these pages, especially the Energy section of Quebec article. You would also be very qualified to take a look at the List_of_dams_and_reservoirs_in_Canada#Quebec. Dis-moi ce que tu en penses et on essayera de coordonner nos efforts! Thank you! --OffiikartTalk 17:30, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

--OffiikartTalk 19:43, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Outsiders" comments and suggestions

[edit]

Hello Bouchecl, Thanks for your message: it was very thoughtful of you to ask. Of course, I welcome your participation! One of the things that is exciting about Wikipedia is that the students get a sense of writing for an audience that is bigger than one - me! This is a bit scary for them, but it is having very good effects in teaching them about how knowledge is collaborative, as well as how to respond to feedback. I am thrilled that the community of Wikipedians has taken an interest, and has, so far, been very helpful to my class. As well, I don't think there are any "outsiders" with Wikipedia: it's a collective project.

I see from the photo on your User page that you are standing in front of a dam; I am assuming from that you are interested in hydro dams. So am I! Some of my research has focussed on the social and environmental impacts of such dams in British Columbia. My students will be writing about the same, using some of the research that has been published on the subject in the past few years.

Thanks in advance for helping them do a better job. --Greentina (talk) 17:57, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

-Thank you so much for noticing, that section was not done by me so I wasn't fully aware of the inaccuracies. I will do my best to correct it--Shania45 (talk) 04:43, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

-Hi, I'm personally thanking you again for the mistake you caught, that the fault was mine, and it was intended for Hydro One Remote Communities. I also want to inquire about the stub that you made for the French version. On your general description, with Google translate (since I don't speak French) you mentioned Hydro one being dismantled under five separate entities -- did you mean subsidiaries? Is there a fifth one? Or perhaps it is an error created by the translator?

P.S. The sources you suggested were quite helpful, thanks again --Niccolo.jacinto (talk) 15:39, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Pacific Gas and Electric Company article changes--millions or billions

[edit]

Dear Bouchecl,

Thanks for making the changes. I am still questioning whether the company's employee really meant billions but misspelled it billions. Before the changes it had been billions. Perhaps it had been wrong to say billions in the infobox before your changes.

It's confusing to me.

Thank you for getting the edits done.

Factseducado (talk) 14:30, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Bouchel,

I sure understand wanting to use integers rather than decimals. Since the three corresponding categories in the infobox from 2008 were all actually billions (not millions expressed as decimals of billions but actually billions) I wonder if the 2008 data in the old infobox were typos (wrote billions meant to write millions) or if the new data are typos (wrote millions meant to write billions).

Sincerely,

Factseducado (talk) 18:29, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Bouchel,

Now I understand. It's commas versus decimals. I would have gone the other route and kept the decimals. It's a MOS issue as you indicated. You are correct. I won't change it. I just didn't see the commas.

Thanks,

PG&E History draft

[edit]

Hi Bouchecl, just wanted to let you know that I've made the changes to referencing as you suggested for my draft of the early PG&E history. Here's the link to the updated draft: User:PParmley/PG&E History part 1. draft I've also replied on the article's talk page. If you're happy with the draft now, would you move it into the article? Hi Bouchecl, after your reply to my request on the PG&E talk page last week, there's been no further discussion. If you think the writing is ok, could you add the sections into the article, replacing the ones currently there and moving the "Sacramento Electric, Gas and Railway Company" section further down the article? New PG&E draft

Hi Bouchecl, I posted a request about the next section of the PG&E history last week but have not received a response yet. Would you have time to review the newest draft? This section covers events from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. As I've done before, the draft is in my user space and my original request is on the talk page.
