Governors of Colorado

I recently got full access to newspapers.com, so I've been using it to shore up our governor articles, primarily verifying dates. You can see I'm working on Colorado now, and all of the early territorial governors have been a pickle. Can you take a look at the conclusions I'm making and see if they make sense? I'm trying to source everything, but modern sources appear to have gotten so much wrong about the early dates. For example, sources seem unanimous that Hunt was appointed governor on April 27, but the earliest contemporary reference I can find to that is his predecessor resigning on, and Hunt being appointed on, May 8. I also had to do a lot of gymnastics with Alexander Cummings' and William Gilpin's dates, so I'd love for someone with an interest in this topic to take a look. Thanks! --Golbez (talk) 22:29, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

I'll take a look. Thanks,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 23:06, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
@Golbez: The timeline for the first five territorial governors is messed up. The Colorado State Archives state the following:

If you could add a reference to each of the Wikipedia Colorado Governor articles with a link to the relevant State Archives article it would really help. Thanks,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 22:33, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

There's two issues at work here: One, I tried to change the date to the date they took office in Colorado, rather than whatever we were using before. Secondly, look at the references I added - I referenced every single date that didn't match with the archives. I've seen enough states get this wrong that I can't take their word for it anymore, hence the reliance on contemporary news sources. So the two issues are: I won't take the archives at their word, so there needs to be better sourcing than that; but primarily, is using the date they took office in Colorado wrong? The way I see it, consistency demands we pick one of either: The date they took office in the state; the date they were sworn in (which was sometimes out of state); or the date they were confirmed. Confirmed is the easiest; it also has the least bearing on reality, as obviously many governors continued serving for months after their successor's confirmation. So it seems the only remaining option is when they received the oath of office, as I have yet to find a situation where someone retained the office after their successor had been sworn in out of state. So, I changed the dates to that - that helps best explain why they don't match the Archives.
So, all that said: Was I wrong to use that date? --Golbez (talk) 02:00, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
@Golbez: You should use the date territorial governors were appointed by the President. The date they were sworn in or arrived in Colorado are really incidental. You can add those dates as notes. Thanks,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 18:21, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
What you're saying is, the main date we use should be the appointed date; my deleted comment (I think) misinterpreted what you said. But that wouldn't work - there are numerous situations where a previous governor carried on after the previous was appointed, or the appointed one never made it to the state, or what not. And there's some situations where we don't even have good sourcing on when a recess appointment occurred. I laid out my reasons for why I picked it, I can't spend any further time defending it without something to defend against other than "it's incidental." I explained why it wasn't. --Golbez (talk) 03:42, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Let me put this another way. I see four possible dating systems we can use:
  1. Date appointed by president;
    • Pros: Easy to source in most cases (recess appointments require further work); objective importance.
    • Cons: Allows for huge overlap for terms where someone was appointed six months before they actually had any powers of the office; apart from recess appointments, appointments have no actual power, so we shouldn't give them such. A presidential appointment is analogous to an election, not a start of a term.
  2. Date confirmed by Senate or recess-appointed by president;
    • Pros: Easy to source in most cases (recess still annoying); objective importance.
    • Cons: Still overlap for terms, but much less egregious.
  3. Date sworn in;
    • Pros: This signifies the formal changeover from one governor to another.
    • Cons: Can be difficult to source, in some cases impossible.
  4. Date took office in state;.
    • Pros: This signifies the practical changeover from one governor to another.
    • Cons: At least as difficult to source as the above.
My preference would be either 2 or 3; I've been adapting all of the governor articles to use 3 but can be convinced to switch to 2. But my concern is, there were often months in between, not just being confirmed and getting to the state, but even just getting confirmed and getting sworn in. It seems poor form to use the confirmed date if they don't have any power til they're sworn in; it would be analogous, I suppose, to the date that the legislature certifying election results. I could easily see this heading to an RFC. --Golbez (talk) 06:23, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
@Golbez: The State of Colorado uses the date of presidential appointment which is in accord with federal law. Federal law prevails in all U.S. territories. While some territorial governors may have acted after a successor had been appointed, those acts can be countermanded by his successor. Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 22:01, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
I think I need to disagree with you. By that logic, John Gurley was a governor of Arizona Territory, despite dying before he would have been sworn in. Arizona rightly doesn't consider him one. As for "There was no territorial governor from August 1 to October 17, 1865" Based on what? McMullin says the resignation was requested July 18, and Baker says the resignation was actually submitted on September 4. I see no date at all in the Archives, so what did you base that "August 1" date on? I see something in Evans' papers about correspondence dated August 1 but with no detail. Furthermore, the Archives says his successor was "appointed October 17" - again, I have multiple sources saying this is likely inaccurate. They have no primary sourcing, I have been unable to find any primary sourcing of a recess appointment, and the closest contemporary reporting I have to the subject says he was appointed as early as August 18. I have exhaustively sourced every one of these dates, so to you simply to dismiss it all with "well the Archives says" is not a valid response.
As for "The State of Colorado uses the date of presidential appointment," you would seem to be arguing in favor of option #2, which I can work with, but not just because Colorado uses it. --Golbez (talk) 23:36, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
@Golbez: I think you may be confusing territorial governors with state governors. If you insist on using #2, please add #1, #3, and #4 in a note and add to each territorial governor article. Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 23:45, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
You could put the date appointed under the presidents name. Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 03:11, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you. An RFC is a better route. --Golbez (talk) 03:19, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
@Golbez: Why don't you submit an RFC at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/History and geography. This will affect 31 states and all existing or former U.S. territories so those state and territory WikiProjects should be notified. Thanks,  Buaidh  talk e-mail 03:26, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

RE: Locating Parkville: This week I will have time to visit sites/libraries in Summit County. Are we searching for the original location of Parkville or searching for additional material that could enable us to publish an article on Parkville? I have access to a significant number of Colorado ghost town volumes on my shelf, so if it's the latter I can contribute that way, too. ~ Pbritti (talk) 15:30, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Parkville, Colorado

On 23 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Parkville, Colorado, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Parkville lost out on becoming the Colorado Territory's capital by eleven votes and is now a ghost town largely buried under mining waste? You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Parkville, Colorado), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. California Ranch

I've been looking up some information on California Ranch, but what I'm finding on it seems to indicate that this was a prior name for Franktown rather than a separate town from it. Have you found anything that says differently? It looks like there is a monument where the ranch was, and I probably could get out there to photograph it at some point, but it might make more sense to cover that in the Franktown article rather than a separate one. What have you done with List of populated places in Colorado?

I see there were a flurry of moves today resulting in this split list existing at List of populated places in Colorado and List of populated places in Colorado-02, with the rationale "perform requested move, see talk page". There is existing consensus from a requested move last year at Talk:List_of_populated_places_in_Colorado#Requested move 31 August 2022 that these pages exist at List of populated places in Colorado: A–K and List of populated places in Colorado: L–Z. What is the justification for these moves to go against previous consensus? Use of "-02" is not a format indicated at WP:NCSPLITLIST. Even if there were a justification, the moves were not executed in a reasonable way, for instance there is currently no {{R from move}} redirect left behind at List of populated places in Colorado: L–Z. Please explain. Mdewman6 (talk) 04:25, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! DonIago (talk) 16:05, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Sorry for the template, but I'm just befuddled as to why you'd link The Shining to the comedy portal. Thank you for clarifying! DonIago (talk) 16:07, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Buaidh. Thank you for your work on Panama City, Florida metropolitan area. User:Lightburst, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Thank you for creating the article. Consider expanding the article. Perhaps use an article such as Milwaukee metropolitan area to see what information you can add and how to do the layout.

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Lightburst}}. Please remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

Notice

The article List of highest U.S. post offices has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:OR, fails WP:LISTN, and seems to be incorrect to boot (e.g. the Arastra post office was located higher while it existed)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Notice

The article Cheyenne metropolitan area has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

So the main Cheyenne page is already talking about the Cheyenne metropolitan area. Not only that, one of the sentences say "...which encompasses all of Laramie County." The metropolitan area here only talks about Laramie County being the sole county in the metro. I propose that we either delete this article or merge it entirely into the main Cheyenne article or the Laramie County article.

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Invitation

Hello Buaidh, we need experienced volunteers.
  • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
  • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
  • If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message at the reviewer's discussion board.
  • Cheers, and hope to see you around.
