Vandalism at high-viewership articles

Hi there. Can you please semi-protect both 2017 Central Mexico earthquake and Hurricane Harvey for 3 months? Both articles have been vandalized very persistently for the last 3 months, and both articles have extremely high reader viewerships on this site. (Both articles also suffer from sockpuppet attacks.) Thank you. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:31, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Vote X

I removed this discussion [5]. Looking a bit more, it seems the editor who brought up NeilN's comment at ANI was Vote X, probably also the editor at Jimbo's talk page. There are a bunch of other comment left by the IP on the RD which I've let be since I don't know enough about Vote X other than that they normally geolocate to the UK to say this is them, but possibly you do. Nil Einne (talk) 06:06, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Nil Einne. Yes, that's definitely Vote X. Geo-location and certain stylistic "tells" all point at that venerable nuisance. Favonian (talk) 11:04, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Second Cameron Ministry

Greeting Favonian. I'm just back from the dentist minus upper right 4 -a medium sized tooth so I'm feeling and looking like Dracula. Could you have a look at a new honour/title that Cameron holds i.e. "Head of government's history" It looks like something straight out of Orwell's 1984 but I believe was an accidental mistake inserted around 9th June 2017. I did look at fixing it but could see where to do it. Regards JRPG (talk) 12:54, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

@JRPG: It is indeed a rather "portentous" term, but it seems to have been with {{Infobox government cabinet}} ever since that template's inception in 2011 and probably can't be fixed without an acrimonious RfC. To me, it's just one of the many things we, as comparative newcomers to the world of parliamentary democracy, don't understand. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Favonian (talk) 18:21, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for looking at it. I'd no intention of embroiling you in any dispute as they always take far longer than writing a new article -it looked a technical rather than a content issue. FWIW I've been interested in politics for about 50 years now and as a pensions campaigner, met a number of ministers from both parties ..but have yet to vote for a winning parliamentary candidate :( I've never heard of the Head of government's history" term before. I'll raise the question with the editor. Sorry if I wasted your time. Regards JRPG (talk) 22:54, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Favonian, Thanks very much for this. PhDoctor

Hi Favonian. Wonder if you could look at the above obviously very highly qualified editor. Regards JRPG (talk) 16:25, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

@JRPG: We can't possibly get enough editors with (academic) post-nominals, but even though I have some of my own, they do not vouch for any knowledge of British politics. What are we looking for? So far, the learned doctor has only received one reprimand for an apparently inept contribution to Chris Williamson (politician). Favonian (talk) 16:38, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Favonian. My concern was that he made a lot of changes to each article without explanation and several I looked at seemed wrong in the native UK context. At this point I'm afraid I doubted his credentials. I agree there's no such thing as too many academic editors and will have another look tomorrow. I prefer not to make an explicit complaint as I don't want to cause bias. Think I screwed up here -sorry. JRPG (talk) 22:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi again. I've added a welcome page & requested an edit summary plus -where appropriate -a citation. Regards JRPG (talk) 21:43, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

It's him alright. Before I swing the tools of my trade, I need to ask you if the absence of a revert constitutes an acknowledgement of his edits to the Ford P68 article. He tends to complain bitterly about being blocked, claiming superior edit quality. Favonian (talk) 15:46, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Does he? I must have missed that! Anyway what seems to have happened is that he's added a World Champs results table and deleted one that listed out all this car's infamous failures. One of my F1 project colleagues has already reinstated it so his deletion thereof should probably be viewed as dubious. Eagleash (talk) 15:54, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Your e-mail

No, I will NOT post anything to that talk page. You have read the online input and, unless you are yet another of the many "administrators" who are completely unqualified in matters of administration and management (real world calling), you should be able to understand WHY I will not post to the talk page. Deal with it by e-mail or not at all. If the latter, no skin off my nose and your loss, not mine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BajanBrent (talkcontribs) 23:42, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

@BajanBrent: I have no idea who you are or what you are referring to, but based solely on the above message, I salute your decision to quit! Favonian (talk) 16:43, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

I received a non-reply e-mail, supposedly from "User:Favonian" of Wikipedia, telling me that I must do this, that and the other on a certain talk page. I presumed it was somehow connected with an information request I sent to the site a couple of weeks ago but, reading your above message, it seems that someone else is up to no good or perhaps it was wrong address. It certainly made no sense. I am sorry I've inconvenienced you personally as you were evidently not involved. I am, nevertheless, quitting the site anyway because there are too many things I don't like at all. There is far too much original research and I don't believe administrators are combating it because I have seen scores of pages with citation needed requests that have been there for years. Anything unverified is possibly nonsense and some of it potentially dangerous nonsense. The impression I have is that administrators in general are unqualified. You cannot administer a process unless you have skills in administration and management so that you can deal with people and processes. Spouting contradictory rules at all and sundry is not administration. I have been told that there is an administrator attached to one of the American sport projects who is still in high school! Again, apologies for sounding off at you but I'm logging off now and I will not be using this account again. BajanBrent (talk) 14:21, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

On the off chance that you read this anyway, or otherwise just for the record: it's regrettably likely that somebody was pretending to send a mail in my name. As part of this "job" one has to deal with a fair number of psychos. A bona fide Wikipedia mail will be sent from wiki@wikimedia.org with a footnote specifying the identity of the user who originated the message. Partly because of these inherent problems, I use Wikipedia email very sparingly.
I apologize for yelling at you and hope that you decide to come back eventually. Don't expect or demand too much of admins, though. Organizations get what they pay for – in this case nothing. Favonian (talk) 14:34, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Krajoyn

You,ve dealt with of the sock accounts of this user recently . There seems to be some obvious socks on Rafael Trujillo and Parsley massacre. One of his socks User:Lisetconv was blocked in October and now two seperate recent editors User:2coolBandit and User:Corteros have done very similar edits on these pages with no edit summary and have only edited with those accounts in stuff relating to the parsely massacre.ColdJack (talk) 11:52, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Sigh. Hi Favonian. If you accept this premise I fear there may be more to do.. see you soon. By the way, have you noticed there's an article on Dominican Civil War and one on Dominican Civil War of 1965? -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:14, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
@Zzuuzz: Sigh, indeed! Admittedly, I found his week-long+ absence too good to be true. Both socks blocked, and thanks to the freshly created account for reporting it. Now, regarding the two civil war articles (as if they didn't have enough already), it's obviously a POV fork and has to be dealt with, but it'll have to wait a day or so; my paid job is attention-mongering. Favonian (talk) 22:10, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Well, the new account is not Krajoyn, but I would advise them to stick to one account if editing in these areas. So my recent blocking log shows some recent relevant activity. I can also now report that this has seen a great deal of blocked sock activity, and that that POV fork is sock-created. Enjoy your break :) -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:50, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for shedding light on the mess. I've redirected the fork and reverted some of the other socking. Teaches me not to let my defenses down. Favonian (talk) 19:35, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

I am expressing a concern that this IP address has been used by PenguinsElite. The IP address there closely resembles that of 109.180.194.83 which was identified as one no later than 4 August 2017. Also, a similar IP address 109.180.193.250 was blocked for block evasion.

The clue: A Rugby Union club article from Middlesbrough is mostly edited by PenguinsElite over the past few months which some have been reverted by yourself.

Iggy (Swan) 22:51, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@Iggy: It's probably him, but one (innocuous) edit is not quite enough for me to swing the ban hammer. On the off chance that the club has more than one fan in Bradford, I'll pay out some WP:ROPE and see what happens. Favonian (talk) 11:14, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

WP:CBAN for Krajoyn

On Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard, I have started a discussion of a potential CBBAN of Krajoyn.

Hello. Can you please Semi-Protect the Hurricane Irma article again for another month? Sockmasters have already returned to vandalize the article. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk) 11:49, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Krajoyn

Because you use the word so often, colocation has only one l. The word collocation means something different. Just thought you'd like to know.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:25, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

I definitely do, Bbb23. It's my past catching up with me after all those years, specifically collocation methods. A very geeky sort of Freudian slip. Favonian (talk) 16:40, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
and here comes Bosquuns, right on cue. Favonian (talk) 16:43, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
Hello Favonian. Anicleni (talk · contribs), a new account, has just made this 464-byte edit at Spanish Empire. Recently you blocked User:Matalear as a sock of User:Krajoyn after he made the same edit. This might indicate that Anicleni is also Krajoyn. Maybe a year or two of semiprotection for the article would be justified. The SPI at WP:Sockpuppet investigations/Krajoyn/Archive goes back to August 2017. From this case I have learned that Favonian is a raging meanie, who prides himself on his virginity and his wikipedia prowess. Though once we start semiprotecting, there is a lot of ground to cover. EdJohnston (talk) 04:48, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
Protected for three months. The general feeling, usually branding itself as "consensus", is to do protections incrementally – maintaining the sweet dream of "anyone can edit". Favonian (talk) 06:49, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

I'd thought Krajoyn has been banned from this Wikipedia

Having seen this, the WP:CBAN doesn't appear to work. Iggy (Swan) 21:42, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

A ban never stopped anyone, but it prevents other admins from unblocking this person just because it makes them feel good. Favonian (talk) 21:45, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Denmark

Hi, I've picked you from a list of participants of the Denmark Wikiproject, as it doesn't seem to be active. I'm a little concerned over some moves made by another editor, and wondered whether these are appropriate and whether there is consensus for these before maybe taking the matter further. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time. --woodensuperman 16:35, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

@Woodensuperman: The person apparently prefers WP:Official names to WP:Common names, which is contrary Wikipedia's naming policies and guidelines. I recommend that you leave a message (no templates) on their talk page to see if they are willing to explain and discuss. So far, talk page discussion seems to be outside their comfort zone, but discussion is required of a Wikipedian. Favonian (talk) 18:48, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Banasura

Given his ability to rapidly create socks on various ranges, I'm wondering if Banasura himself is a sock. He's really hitting hard still at RSN and user talk pages. I'm playing whack-a-mole right now. Any ideas about where I could ask? SPI talk page? Doug Weller talk 12:40, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

@Doug Weller: The SPI talk page seems like the most promising venue. With this kind of pest, I'd just semi-protect every page he touches – or block anonymous editing from the Indian subcontinent. Both approaches tend to attract criticism. Favonian (talk) 14:27, 18 March 2018 (UTC)
Particularly the latter. RSN's been protected. I'll ask at the SPI talk page probably. Doug Weller talk 14:30, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

JuanRiley

This IP you blocked is now-blocked user JuanRiley who is now back in IP form. He had the tendency to stalk my edits in the past and now seems to be on the same course by posting random comments/edits after making my edits in Bishonen's talk page posting on the same talk section I began. In the past JuanRiley was notorious for being highly conflict bound in edits and toxic on talk pages. Is there a way to make sure he/she doesn't come back? Also, the edits he/she made after mine in Bishonen's talk page are now censored, and I'm worried it might had posed some sort of threat for them to be censored given the history between me and JuanRiley, I'm afraid especially now since he/she now knows my IP address. (N0n3up (talk) 05:17, 21 March 2018 (UTC))

If he becomes directly threatening (as opposed to merely abusive), you should follow the advice at WP:VIOLENCE. He appears to have several, dynamic IP ranges at his disposal, making it difficult for administrators to implement a permanent solution. Per WP:CIVILITY, drones are not an option. Favonian (talk) 07:18, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Eh... What's up, doc?

That was quick. Three minutes from first edit to socking block! I was suspicious after the first edit (Bugs Bunny name and Crayola edit) but by the time I saw the give-away edit you had already blocked. Meters (talk) 21:30, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Hope I interpreted your request correctly. At any rate, Talk:Peter Matthews (artist) is now freely available. Favonian (talk) 13:53, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I think so—for wikiproject stuff etc. The article is now credited to DGG of course: so now I can accuse him of WP:OWN with wild abandon :) may thanks again! I'm not sure how I could've avoided it though—get the redirect deleted before starting, would you say? —SerialNumber54129 paranoia /cheap shit room 14:10, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
You couldn't delete it without admin assistance, but you could have overridden the redirect with the project info. Keeping DGG as the creator has the added advantage that he gets notified if some misguided editor nominates the new article for deletion. :) Favonian (talk) 14:15, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

Unjustified block

You've blocked me a week ago for 24 hours on foot of violation of 1RR, but I didn't revert the article Turkish military operation in Afrin more than once. And the one "revert" was more of a rewrite. See comparison. There I did address the objection 2 in the edit summary of the preceding revert (Furthermore, the claim he "somewhat undercut this message" is not supported by this source, this is WP:OR.) by changing the sentence. And in objection 1 he was wrong, because Hürriyet is (until now) a decent Turkish source (Why is hurriyetdailynews.com not trustable? In the future it "might" be compromised (because it was sold some days ago) but up to now it is one of the best Turkish sources.). I've pinged you from my talk page on that day but you didn't answer. Therefore I write it here. --Nov3rd17 (talk) 14:43, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello, as you were the adm that protected pages like Battle of the Granicus and Battle of Gaugamela, and i'd suggest you expand this protectiong to other articles in the Category:Battles of Alexander the Great, such as Battle of Issus and Battle of the Hydaspes. These are controversial topics, and there is even a arbitration guideline for it (WP:BALKANS) but IPs are constantly making changes that were not discussed previously or are in conformity with any consensus agreed here on Wikipedia. A protection, against this vandalism, would be necessary to avoid future EW or troubling discussions, that has even sparked racial remarks (with no punishment of any sort, btw). That's my view, i hope you can act on it if you feel the same way about what's going on. Thanks, Coltsfan (talk) 02:17, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

@Coltsfan: Hydaspes was already protected, and I have taken care of Issus. Regarding the category, there has not yet been any notable disruption, so a protection would be met with much tut-tut'ing and recitals of WP:NO-PREEMPT. Let's await the inevitable and act upon it then. Favonian (talk) 10:08, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

@Duke Remington: Absolutely not! You were both edit-warring and the protection was the alternative to a couple of blocks. You must now join the discussion at Talk:New Looney Tunes#Cancellation status and resolve the issue there. Resuming the disruptive feuding after the protection expires will have dire consequences. @Winged Blades of Godric: I believe the subject is sufficiently notable. Admittedly, most of the attention derives from the Danish sortie during the Battle of Copenhagen (1807), but WP:1E deals with biographies, not geographical locations. The draft is badly in need of copy editing, and the name should probably be "Classen's Garden". Favonian (talk) 16:05, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

At what point do talk page posts like this become personal attacks? He does this sort of thing with some regularity and I'm frankly tired of it. ---The Old JacobiteThe '45 15:10, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Hardly a model of civility, but IMO it falls short of actual personal attacks. WP:CIVIL may be a policy, pillar and whatnot, but it's not being enforced. Favonian (talk) 15:15, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Why is it not being enforced? I ask knowing that, were it enforced, I would be on the receiving end of it as well. But, this is not the first time he's made a talk page post like this – indeed, he does it any time he and I are having a disagreement, trying to draw other editors into an argument. How am I supposed to respond? I've restrained my gut instinct to tell him to shut up. ---The Old JacobiteThe '45 15:27, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
I haven't read through your interactions, in particular the extent to which you have been lacking in civility.
