Some questions about goalscorer module

Hi, S.A. Julio :) Firstly, the 2022 World Cup qualification is beginning next month, have you planned to use a module for the tournament, or already made one? As far as I know, we only have modules for Euro qualifying.
Secondly, while doing 2018 campaign, we had a discussion about shortening goalscorers lists: [1]. Many editors (including me) supported the idea. I think we should do the same to 2020 Euro qualifying's main article as well, but I do not know if we are able to do this using the module. Hopefully you can tell me. Thanks in advance :) Centaur271188 (talk) 05:59, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

@Centaur271188: Hey! I was thinking about it, the only issue is that I'm unsure if I will have enough time to keep it up to date. Would you be interested in helping to update/watch it? Not as many people are familiar with modules, so mistakes/errors could arise if not updated carefully. I could also add some documentation to the module page for clarification. Regarding shortening the list, the module supports this, so it can be done for the World Cup qualifying articles. However for the Euros I don't see it as much of an issue, the 2016 cycle also has the full list, which is helpful in seeing the tally of lower players. S.A. Julio (talk) 10:03, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I will do my best to keep it up-to-date :) My early Lua edits were troublesome too, and those modules do not allow preview, so I will have to visit the Euro 2020 module sandbox a lot (thankfully you made that). Centaur271188 (talk) 12:14, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: Alright sounds good, I can help start the data page, I was thinking one for each confederation? I think the top scorers on the main article, 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, might have to be manually done for now as the module currently only supports two levels (i.e. UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying --> Group A, B, C...), not three (i.e. Worldwide --> Confederation --> Round). However I'll soon try and find out if there could be a way to combine it for the main article. And for the AFC data page, I'd think after round 2 the page could be copied to a new data page for 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualification? Also, the module automatically sorts players from the following countries by exactly how the name is written (doesn't convert to LAST, FIRST): China, Chinese Taipei, Myanmar, South Korea, North Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos (are there any similar countries missing?). Also, one benefit of the module is that special characters are "cleaned" when sorting. I added all the special characters I found from the entire history of Euro goalscorers, however more will need to be added for the rest of the world. If you need to add any, the list is at Module:Goalscorers, line 380 ("specialChars"). S.A. Julio (talk) 20:01, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
Well, if these modules cannot include more than 2 levels, then it would be difficult to apply them in AFC, CAF, CONCACAF and OFC campaigns, which usually have more than 2 rounds; so plainlist seems to be the only way here. While CONMEBOL and UEFA have no problem using Lua modules, I think we should not use 2 different methods in this whole qualification. Please let me know if I misunderstand anything :) Centaur271188 (talk) 20:42, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: Sorry if it wasn't clear, the module can handle any number of rounds/groups, the only issue is that World Cup qualifying has three levels of goalscorer lists: main level (i.e. 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification#Top goalscorers), confederation level (i.e. 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification (CAF)#Top goalscorers, and group/round level (i.e. 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification – CAF Second Round#Goalscorers). Currently the module can only handle two levels, so the top 15 or so worldwide goalscorers on the main article (2018 FIFA World Cup qualification#Top goalscorers) would have to be done manually. However the module can handle every other page. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:11, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for explaining, I understand now. I agree that we are doing the main article list manually, maybe the inter-confederal playoffs as well, they are a separate section & article with just 4 matches and perhaps 10-20 goals. About Asian sortnames, I think you can leave out Thailand and Laos. Thai/Lao names are similar to Indo-European ones: the given name comes first, then the family name (they usually do not have the middle part). Hongkong and Macau are the most complicated cases: their names are mainly in Chinese order, but some use Western way; I think a Lua module cannot be programmed to 'understand' this, so we should find a way to manually sort them. And yes, the first 2 rounds also act as Asian Cup qualifiers, it is good to copy the data. :) Centaur271188 (talk) 21:57, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

@Centaur271188: Alright, I'll remove Thailand and Laos, I guess for Thailand the shortened wikilink uses the given name for match summaries (i.e. 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification – AFC Second Round#Group F), while they are still sorted "LAST, FIRST"? I'm not sure if this is the same case for Laos, for example 2018 AFF Championship shortens to given names for match summaries, while 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification – AFC Second Round#Group G and 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification – Play-off Round shortens to surnames. I'll leave an explanation in the documentation for manually adjusting the sortname for different scenarios. Also, regarding the inter-confederation play-offs, should these goalscorer statistics be counted on the confederation articles too? For example, the infobox at 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC) has the end date as 10 October 2017, and doesn't include statistics for the inter-confederation play-offs. But the "Top goalscorers" section at the bottom of the page includes Mile Jedinak with 10 goals, therefore counting the match against Honduras. The inter-confederation play-offs are seperate, so I don't think they should be "double counted", thoughts? S.A. Julio (talk) 22:34, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
I think it is because Thai people are referred mainly by their given name [2], domestically as well as internationally. While spoken Thai and Lao languages are mutually intelligible, I do not know if the same rule applies to Lao names. About Mile Jedinak, I have moved him to '7 goals' section, some editor placed him in '10 goals' one in February 2018 and we just overlooked it. Inter-confederal playoffs should be counted separately. Centaur271188 (talk) 05:55, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi again :) Can the module's update note support some kind of clarification? For example, "As of 1/2/... matches played on..." or "As of OFC, AFC and... matches played on...". Thanks. Centaur271188 (talk) 07:36, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

@Centaur271188: This can be done, I'll look into adding it. Also, now that teams have begun to be eliminated, should we add the note "players highlighted in bold are still active in the competition"? S.A. Julio (talk) 11:13, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
Ah yes, I forgot to mention it. We should have that note as well. Thanks for reminding me :) Centaur271188 (talk) 11:41, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: Alright, now added. The bolding is controlled in the module with "data.active_countries", just remove the country code for teams which have been eliminated. The actual note itself is added through a parameter on the page like here. And once the goalscorer list needs to be shortened for World Cup qualifying, you can put the value of the least number of goals you wish to display using the 'minimum' parameter on those pages. S.A. Julio (talk) 12:17, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
The bold feature works well for AFC and world articles, however it stays bold even in AFC 1st round page. I tried |bold=no and failed. It looks not that simple. Hopefully you can do something about this. Thanks :) Centaur271188 (talk) 03:01, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: Sorry, now  Fixed. Once a round is completed, the date can be changed to 'complete'. Only issue is that because we are "between" rounds, this puts the AFC and world articles into past tense and removes the 'as of' date, so a little workaround is to move first round updated to the second round such as here, if that makes any sense. Cheers, S.A. Julio (talk) 17:02, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, but I think this is not about whether a round is complete. For example, when doing 2018 campaign, only confederal and world lists had bold feature; rounds/groups lists did not, goalscorers there were listed normally. It makes sense because all teams participating in a particular round can be considered equally active. By the way, AFC 1st round is not complete yet, we are waiting for AFC/FIFA decision about Sri Lanka vs Macau match. Centaur271188 (talk) 03:38, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Canadian soccer player date formats

I noticed that you modified the date format for two Canadian soccer player articles recently. Unlike other countries that have MOS:DATETIES, Canada is a special case when it comes to date formats. Apparently, "articles related to Canada or Israel may use either format with (as always) consistency within each article." It then points to MOS:DATERET. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:25, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

@Walter Görlitz: Ah alright thanks, I was just trying to go through some squads of players to do some quick tidying, I'll keep that in mind for the future. S.A. Julio (talk) 06:28, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Luo Guiping

Hello, according to the news, Luo Guiping has never made a senior appearance for the national team. She has never been called up until this April and she didn't play in two matches in April according to the match reports published on the CFA website. [3] [4] Qby (talk) 14:12, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Sebastián Soto move

My apologies for the Sebastian Soto/Sebastián Soto page move. I was semi-aware of WP:SMALLDETAILS but wasn't sure if it covered accents, my bad! Appreciate the heads up. However, a small thing: could you notify the mover in the future. I only say this as I almost didn't see the move back from Sebastian Soto (soccer) and was midway through changing articles to use Sebastian Soto (soccer), which has left everything in a bit of a mess - of my doing, will fix that shortly. Anyway, if I had finished changing it to (soccer) before your move back I most likely would've gone on to edit other articles and not realised the mess I had left. @R96Skinner: Sure no problem, I see now it could've been easy to miss. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:55, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Law5 blog

Hey, just a heads up. This blog is reliable. Some admins there have direct connections to the UEFA (and so on) and more often than not they do have appointments online before other publish them, always correct in my 5 years i know them. Kante4 (talk) 06:04, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

Number 2: You are taking over the women tournament with lineups and stuff? Just so i know to not getting into doing that. Kante4 (talk) 06:05, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
@Kante4: Alright, I'm typically hesitant to use information from these types of sources, but I do agree the site is always reliable. And I am planning on helping to update with the Women's World Cup, hopefully should be a good tournament :) S.A. Julio (talk) 06:15, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Luo Guiping

Hello Julio. She's listed as having a cap on the FIFA website, and this says she was selected for the national team in 2013 (which follows from the FIFA article, which says she was called up the year after the 2012 U20 World Cup). If she really is uncapped, this is also wrong. Cheers, Number 57 13:00, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

@Number 57: Hmm, this article seems to say she did not actually make an appearance? (And Football at the 2013 East Asian Games lists China's team as U23.) Also, the caps/goals from FIFA are not always reliable (I believe this info is provided by the national FAs), I recall last year noticing a few mistakes with the World Cup (i.e. Samúel Friðjónsson listed having scored a goal here and here, which is incorrect). S.A. Julio (talk) 13:27, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
@Number 57: Never mind, she actually made two appearances at the 2013 Valais Women's Cup! Took a bit of work to find, but she appeared in the semi-final ([5]) and final ([6], [7]). S.A. Julio (talk) 13:40, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

Another update-sharing

Greetings. Do you remember our agreement in the Men's WC? I want to do it again. On MD 3, may I update the entire early matches (kits, stats, tables, you can take POTM though if I missed it) and kits for later matches? PS: I might not be able to do kits and line-ups quick tomorrow due to my thesis. Can you wait for about 15 minutes? Thank you and cheers. – Flix11 (talk) 15:27, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

@Flix11: Alright sounds good, I'll only add the lineups if they are missing 30 minutes before kickoff. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:01, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Also, do you know if there is a matching file for South Africa's socks? S.A. Julio (talk) 18:42, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
I have added it. Enjoy. – Flix11 (talk) 18:55, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Since today and tomorrow's matches will only be held at nights, how about we split? You got the Italy-Brazil and I the Jamaica-Australia. For the Wednesday, you Scotland-Argentina and I Japan-England. This will cover from kits down to attendance source in match report. How about that? – Flix11 (talk) 03:46, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Okay sounds good. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:53, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Any idea if Argentina's kit ([8], [9]) exists anywhere? S.A. Julio (talk) 18:07, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Just use the color of home shorts for shirt and socks, remove all templates. Then go to Commons talk page of JonasBR and hand a request to make all 5 kit components, like I did on Thailand's. – Flix11 (talk) 18:12, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Can you cover the reports? I am busy right now. I will do knockout stage and tables only. Thanks. – Flix11 (talk) 17:43, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: You mean updating the full-time result? I don't have the time, also I can cover the knockout article. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:45, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Well OK. – Flix11 (talk) 17:47, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Julio, let us continue our cooperation. I will add the kits and lines-up for both and results for early matches. However, for today and tomorrow I cannot handle the early full time results. Please leave me the bracket and section renaming. Can you do that? – Flix11 (talk) 13:59, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Alright, though I try to update the knockout article in one edit. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:21, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Julio, we have an update-sharing agreement. You may do the early match and/or line-up-kits of late matches if I ask you. You already have >95K edits. I want a part to increase my numbers too. Thanks. – Flix11 (talk) 15:03, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Alright, I wasn't sure of the plan but I typically prepare the lineups as I need it for the image (though I subscribe to the "quality, not quantity" idea). You'll do the kits/lineups and I the full-time updates moving forward? S.A. Julio (talk) 17:15, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Yes please. However can you just update in the section of the match rather than the entire page at once? I want the bracket and next phase's "cakes" since they will double my number. I will update at about 2 seconds interval between. – Flix11 (talk) 17:18, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Please give me time until the kick-off. I am undergoing my thesis. Thanks Julio :) – Flix11 (talk) 15:10, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Sorry, I was trying to give you time, but kickoff was less than 30 minutes away and other language wikis also rely on the English version. Good luck with your thesis, hopefully you can add the attendance/POTM and lineups for the later match of the day. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:43, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: May I have tonight's kits and lines-up as well as both of Saturdays? You may have all of the Friday match. Thank you. – Flix11 (talk) 15:35, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Nvm, I will take only Saturdays – Flix11 (talk) 16:39, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Alright, sounds good. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:30, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: May I have bracket, section, and the Olympic qualification table? – Flix11 (talk) 00:35, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Sure, also would you be able to add the full-time result for Italy-Netherlands on Saturday? I don't think I'll have time to add it. S.A. Julio (talk) 14:00, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: I can take the entire day if you want to. Cheers. – Flix11 (talk) 14:43, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: That would be helpful, thanks! Let me know if something changes and you can't. S.A. Julio (talk) 12:12, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Would like to remind you about my part. – Flix11 (talk) 15:34, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Sorry it did not seem as though you were around. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:36, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Do you have the full-time update for the late match? S.A. Julio (talk) 17:57, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Sorry I slept. But thanks for covering. – Flix11 (talk) 22:25, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Hey may I take both remaining matches kits and lines-up? You can get the cards and goals though. Also I want to update the countries in the overall tables on FIFA Women's World Cup. You OK with that? Thanks. – Flix11 (talk) 08:12, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
@Flix11: Sounds good, though would it be alright if I did the final lineups? The match has a bit of significance for me. S.A. Julio (talk) 14:34, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: OK. So I get the kits? Perhaps you wanna share me the goalkeeper and manager (they have fixed positions)? You can take the other 10. – Flix11 (talk) 16:26, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

2019 FIFA Women's World Cup ranking table.

I have not edited a ton of things on Wikipedia (although more than my newly created account would suggest), so please forgive my ignorance with relation to sources, but I'm not understanding why you continue to remove the table.

Any reasonable individual can infer the final rankings based on the record of the team and when they were eliminated. Although FIFA has not yet spelled it out for us verbatim (they didn't even publish the final ranking for the 2018 World Cup in the technical report as they've done in the past) it's debatable to me to infer that group standings are not a viable source. We know the teams' records thereby we know the final standings order.

Please provide your logic regarding this topic.

Regards

The SS Implication (talk) 18:01, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

@The SS Implication: See Talk:2018 FIFA World Cup#Final standings, which relates to the same issue. Unless FIFA release a ranking of the teams in this manner, it appears to be original research. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:08, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Yikes. After reading that thread I see this is a losing battle. Seems logic would prevail in this situation. 3 points is more than 2, 2 is more than 1 etc....

The SS Implication (talk) 18:12, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

That may be, but information must be cited using reliable sources. If FIFA decided to change their criteria, this would result in a different ranking, hence why WP:NOR is an issue. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:24, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Regarding 2019 FIFA Women's WC

I removed the "against country" from the own goals because that was inconsistent with the remaining goals (which do not list such details). In the spirit of consistency, isn't the matter of which other national team benefited from the own goal rather trivial? In addition to consistency, I also had WP:NOTSTATSBOOK in mind, which states "Statistics that lack context or explanation can reduce readability and may be confusing"; in this case the addition of the country lacks context (why is that important? - which could also be said of the inclusion of all goal scorers at the WC, but nvm) and is also somewhat confusing because of the resulting lack of consistency (which has the reader wonder on the same question: "why is this important?"). 107.190.33.254 (talk) 19:02, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Well own goals are unique as they are scored for they opponent, hence why the team they scored for is noted. For all the remaining goals, it is clear who the goal is being scored for (i.e. the country of the player). S.A. Julio (talk) 19:10, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Didn't see it like that, but nevertheless isn't the team for which it was scored a rather trivial detail (why don't we also include which teams goals were scored against, too?)? 107.190.33.254 (talk) 19:23, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Also, on a completely unrelated tangent, have you ever considered archiving your talk page? Given the significant number of entries, it can be hard to navigate. Cheers, 107.190.33.254 (talk) 21:41, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

I don't see the detail as trivial, that way you can see all the scorers of a team (which would not clear if the note were excluded). And yeah I'll have to get to archiving again, it builds up quicker than expected. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:37, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

2019 FIFA Women's World Cup knockout stage

Hi there, I noticed you removed the "(cnr.)" tag I added to Kellond-Knight's goal against Norway and marked it as "cleanup." While the "corner" tag is uncommon on Wikipedia (compared to "penalty" or "own goal"), that is only because a goal scored directly from a corner is remarkably uncommon. When it does occur, it seems to be typical to tag it as such on Wikipedia. Example usage: Coll's goal against the Soviet Union on the page, "1962 FIFA World Cup"; and Rapinoe's first goal against Canada on the page, "Football at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament." Could you please restore that tag? Thanks so much! Fhiter27 (talk) 15:46, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

@Fhiter27: It does not seem to be universal, for example there is no marking at 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup Final. The marking also appears unnecessary, a corner kick goal is not as noteworthy as an own goal or penalty. I would suggest discussing this at WT:FOOTY first to gain a consensus, therefore it could be incorporated directly into {{goal}} if deemed worthwhile. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:04, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Soccer lineup graphics

Hi! You do fantastic work with all levels of soccer on Wikipedia, one of which being the lineup graphic you make. From glancing down your talk page, I can see that a few before me have asked this question, and I don't mean to pile on, but I was wondering if you could possibly tell me how these are done or the programs you use? I'd like to make them, if possible, for some smaller or less notable competitions that you may not get to (e.x. 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup or something like the u21 UEFA Euro). I'd just like to help out and I'm hoping that you could give me a hand. Thanks! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 23:14, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Realizing now that the u21 Euro page wouldn't need the graphic. Sorry! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 23:17, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
Above question still stands though, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 18:58, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Help/Advice

Hello, I am seeking help or advice on how to block IP addresses (editors without log-ins). This one certain editor is doing live match updates on the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. I have tried warning him by reverting edits etc but they continue to do live updates. How can I go about this? Thanks in advance. --Skyblueshaun (talk) 14:46, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

@Skyblueshaun: Is the person switching IPs? If not, you could try WP:AIV, otherwise WP:RFPP could possibly help. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:29, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Women in sports

Hi there, S.A. Julio. I am really impressed by all the articles you have created on footballers, including many on women. In July and August, WikiProject Women in Red has a strong focus on sports. It would be great if you could help to improve coverage of women footballers who lag far behind men on Wikipedia. Hope you can join in and help us along.--Ipigott (talk) 12:55, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

2019 UEFA Europa League Final

Regarding [10]: The .png version had much better resolution is is possible to zoom so that you still can read the small text on the match programme. How is it unnecessary?Jonteemil (talk) 21:15, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

@Jonteemil: See Wikipedia:Non-free content#Image resolution, the size can only be so large for images (in this case, the size must be around 278 × 358). S.A. Julio (talk) 17:53, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
But wouldn’t a bot rescale my versions anyway? And then the resolution would still be better than the older .jpg versions?Jonteemil (talk) 21:19, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
But then the image is the same size? So the change doesn't seem necessary. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:49, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Fbaicon

Hey, i though that would be used regulary now but in the CL/EL Q articles for 19-20 i see none of them. I use them for the Women's CL. What's the plan, use or not? I think it should be. Kante4 (talk) 18:26, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

@Kante4: I agree, I'll start converting the instances of flagicons (except for top scorers) in UFEA competitions. The only issue is with two legged tables (since they are used for other sports), I'll try and think of a solution. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:17, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello WOSO editors! What a 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France! There has been a lot of activity on tournament- and player-related Wikipedia articles with all of the worldwide coverage of the tournament and its players. Let's keep the momentum going.

WOMEN IN SPORTS EDIT-A-THON FOR JULY + AUGUST!

WikiProject Women in Red is focusing on Women in Sports during their edit-a-thon for July & August 2019.

Get all the info here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/126

Sign up and help fill in the gaps within various articles related to women's football / soccer - whether they be players, teams, leagues, historical, administrators, referees, etc. Every little bit helps. Be sure to tag your article talk pages with {{WIR-126}}.

These edit-a-thons are a great way to work with others to help bridge the gender gaps on Wikipedia. Thanks for your contributions!

Did you know...

WP:GNG takes precedence over WP:NFOOTY (which only includes the players in two currently active women's leagues)? Often times there is enough media coverage that meets WP:GNG or other notability guidelines. For more information, see WP:WOSO#Notability and be sure to tag the new article talk page with: {{WP Women's sport|footy=yes}}

2022 World Cup qualification - CAF

Also @Jts1882: Hi, have you created a module for CAF? I have not seen it yet. Thanks in advance :) Centaur271188 (talk) 15:03, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Centaur271188, Hey sorry, I had a number of on- and off-wiki projects distracting me recently, so I forgot about creating the CAF module. I'll have it created very soon. On a partially related tangent, how do you think the articles should be split for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONCACAF)? I had thought the lower seeded round should be split into group and knockout stage articles, but wasn't sure. Then the Hexagonal and Play-off rounds will have their own pages. Unlike the other confederations, there aren't really "rounds" per se with this CONCACAF format, so I was unsure of what the articles should be titled in the future. I had added redlinks for potential titles of the sub-articles, thoughts? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 20:41, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
I think our current structure for CONCACAF is good enough, just naturally based on their qualification format. The round/group articles' names seem OK as well. And please do not worry if you have no free time to make modules, just take it easy :) Centaur271188 (talk) 06:04, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

Line-ups for the 1962 FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage

Hello. It's been a while since I addressed you a couple of questions about 1962 FIFA WC formations. Now when I finished checking out the line-ups for knockout round matches and added them to the article can I ask you to make tactical schemes for them? Also the scheme for the final game needs correction. Can you please see to it? Algorus (talk) 13:36, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

About short name in football box

Hi, thanks for your explanation, but I do not really agree with "Sam Larsson was a squad member in the March fixtures". Isn't it reasonable enough to rely on the match report only? I know that way causes some issues as well - e.g. sometimes we have 1 Hazard (use the short name Hazard and readers have to mouse over the link to see it is Eden or Thorgan), sometimes we have 2 - but it is more relevant to that exact match anyway, also easier for editors. Centaur271188 (talk) 21:50, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

@Centaur271188: Well, Sam Larsson was on the bench for two matches, and could still feature in November. The line has to be drawn somewhere for when disambiguation is necessary, I think basing it off the squad members during the given cycle makes the most sense. Jordan Lukaku didn't appear in the group stage of Euro 2016, but Romelu was similarly disambiguated at the time. S.A. Julio (talk) 04:23, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
I agree that disambiguation is always needed in Euro and World Cup finals, because each team has a fixed squad there - a player is still in the squad even if he makes no appearances. Qualifying campaigns have no fixed squads, so I take a match-by-match approach; if I find no players with the same surname in that match's squad, I see no need for disambiguation. Back in October 2017[11], SuperJew and Chanheigeorge made some disambiguations and I reverted them with the same explanation; they had no further replies so I thought my way was OK. Centaur271188 (talk) 11:00, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: I would disagree there, if a letter disambiguation is used once, it should be used throughout the entire page. We should be staying internally consistent, just as is done for club football seasonal articles. S.A. Julio (talk) 12:08, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

Table(s)

Hey, just read that it is possilbe to use |team_order instead of |team1= etc. Should it be used? I started with it for the 2. Bundesliga table, looks cleaner and easier to me. Kante4 (talk) 18:29, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

@Kante4: I definitely agree, it is much easier to reorder teams with only the comma separator. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:39, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
That's what i thought. Kante4 (talk) 18:40, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
Also @Kante4: Thanks for finding it out. I have just applied it for La Liga, Serie A and Premiership. It even works without the spaces, we can only use commas, but adding the spaces seems more readable (I mean the code). Centaur271188 (talk) 11:52, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Most sources spell his name without the diacritics, most tellingly the man himself, see Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:41, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

@Mattythewhite: A number of reliable sources use the diacritics, such as Soccerway, the Premier League, ESPN, and the BBC. Social media isn't necessarily indicative, for example Sergio Agüero's Facebook and Twitter. S.A. Julio (talk) 00:59, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Euro 2020 playoffs page visual representation

The visual representation of qualification to to Euro 2020 playoffs is very confusing, in my opinion. Of course, a lot of the blame for confusion belongs to UEFA - I think that it requires a law degree to understand the process, but we can simplify. My suggestion for visual coloring is:

  In a playoff spot: Green
Qualified to playoffs - dark #66FF66
Currently in a playoff position (not guaranteed) - light #CCFFCC

Not in a playoff spot: Red/Purple
     Direct qualification - Purple
         Qualified directly - dark #B266FF
Currently in a direct qualification position - light #E5CCFF
     Eliminated - Red
Cannot qualify to playoff or tournament - dark #FF6666
Currently not in a qualification position - light #FFCCCC

I think that it will create a clear map of who's in and who's out.

Jawzny (talk) 16:16, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

@Jawzny: I agree that the table can be somewhat confusing, the only issue with the idea is that, per MOS:COLOR, colours are not meant to be the only method of conveying information. So it is a bit of a difficult situation, trying to convey all the information while still complying with Wikipedia guidelines. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:33, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

@S.A. Julio Thanks! We can still keep the legend (as described below), and I agree that for some visual impairments a color code is insufficient (accessibility is important!). I'll make the changes, take a look and undo if it doesn't make sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jawzny (talkcontribs) 20:45, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

@Jawzny: Alright, I had drafted an alternate version to look a bit simpler, I've now added it to the page. Any better? S.A. Julio (talk) 21:11, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
@S.A Julio: Brilliant! Thanks! Jawzny (talk) 21:23, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks & question

Thank for that fix about Greece team! I forgot that if the majority of A & B teams qualify directly, some new C teams have a new chance.

What did you mean when saying about 4 combinations of directly qualified teams? Is it that "if at least 4 of these teams' pairs qualify, Greece advance to play-offs"? If yes, Greece already advanced to play-offs as Belgium/Russia, Spain/Sweden, France/Turkey, and Italy/Finland all have qualified for the Euro.--Joél be back (talk) 22:38, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

@Joél be back: Ah I maybe worded it a bit poorly, I meant there are four unique combinations of qualified teams in which Greece qualifies, since they could be joined by Netherlands or Germany and Austria or Israel. Here's a spreadsheet if you're interested. S.A. Julio (talk) 23:14, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

@Karlostroski: Not exactly sure what edit you are referring to, but in general a podcast probably isn't a great way to source information, and instead seems like promotion. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:40, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Attendance 2019 FCWC

Hi my friend. Where did you find, so early, attendance for this tournament? I usually wait for the full match report in pdf, so I'm asking you where you've already found the data. :)--80.183.57.38 (talk) 19:02, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Why you never answer to an IP? It's a simple question. I'm not being able to find a reason according to your behavior. Ok, it doesn't matter, I'll wait for the match pdf report, as I did until today.--80.183.57.38 (talk) 21:20, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

FIFA World Cup qualification

 Done GiantSnowman 17:29, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: Great, thank you! S.A. Julio (talk) 17:36, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for adding the flag variants. It may not matter, but I noticed afterwards that FIBA and WBSC use and not (different proportions). Compare WBSC (FIBA:s pic is gigantic, so i don't link to it) with IHF. Does it matter which of the two flags is called by the templates?
- Speaking of IHF, IHF uses both the local flag and the French flag of New Caledonia on its website (Probably best to let the handball template just call for , as it is now, to be clear). IHF uses two flag also for Guadeloupe, but not for Martinique or French Guiana. DenSportgladeSkåningen (talk) 14:34, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

@DenSportgladeSkåningen: Hmm, looking at the WBSC website it seems they have all their flags proportioned to 4:3? For example Zimbabwe is very narrow compared to the Flag of Zimbabwe. As for the IHF, after looking at some clips of New Caledonia in tournaments, it does seem the French and FLNKS flags are used together. Also, interestingly enough Martinique adopted a flag meant for sporting events in May this year, shown here (more info at Flag of Martinique). This video from an IHF youth competition seems to show the flag being used. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:05, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

Thanks!

I don't know how that happened but thanks for reverting those changes so quickly! Tassedethe (talk) 00:46, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Question about your revert and the WikiProject on Pro Football Leagues

Hey there. In your revert you said: ":Canadian teams previously played in the league, this list is not only for active leagues." If that's the case, shouldn't these leagues also be in that group?

USSF Division 2 Professional League, USL First Division, North American Soccer League (1968–84), National Professional Soccer League (1967), United Soccer Association, American Professional Soccer League, & A-League (1995–2004)

I'm sort of confused since these leagues had Canadian clubs in them but they aren't in the Canada section but are in the U.S. part. ColeTrain4EVER (talk) 02:44, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

@ColeTrain4EVER: Leagues are listed again if multiple countries apply, such as Major League Soccer and the A-League. S.A. Julio (talk) 08:07, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
Right, so with these leagues that had Canadian clubs wouldn't they apply to be double listed? I'm just sort of confused why USL Championship & the North American Soccer League are in that spot but not these other 7? I'm only asking because it seems like this project is very well maintained and if there's a rule I missed I wouldn't want to step on anyone's toes if I added them in. ColeTrain4EVER (talk) 16:46, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
@ColeTrain4EVER: Yeah, the leagues you mentioned can also be double listed, nobody probably got around to adding them to the other countries given they are no longer active. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:49, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

Result

The match was over (no time left to change the score), so there is no reason not to add the final result of normal and overtime. Next time you should see other cases. Don't be concerned you will be the first one to add the penalties.--Sakiv (talk) 20:53, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

FIFA international result pages

Hi, I don't know if you remember, but in August of last year you let me know about the existence of the "static" version of FIFA's website, which would have been useful to view the results pages of the national teams. Unfortunately, the static version hasn't been working for a while (see Lebanon's results page for example). Other than using a web archive (which displays the page in an "awkward" HTML-like way), do you know if it's possible to view the page clearly? Thanks in advance, Nehme1499 (talk) 01:13, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

@Nehme1499: Yeah, something happened to the static website which makes the results no longer accessible. Unfortunately, the FIFA website has continued to become less useful in recent years. S.A. Julio (talk) 06:07, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Hello. Why this article, created by user named Sakiv, is not following the concistency with this Germany national football team results (2000–19)?--79.34.216.248 (talk) 16:45, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Looks similar enough, though it shouldn't be difficult to adjust the structure where necessary. S.A. Julio (talk) 01:08, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

[12] I was thinking wrong, I had read that the flag became official at the end of 2019 (November), but I saw now that it was not correct.. Aha, it has happened before (it has happened on svwp too). Btw, which flag should be used for Martinique in 2019–20 CONCACAF Nations League? Snake flag or sport flag? The table uses the sports flag, while the matches use the snake flag. DenSportgladeSkåningen (talk) 08:17, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

1940 Mandatory Palestine kit

Hi, I just wanted to ask if you were still interested in making Mandatory Palestine's kit (1940). The image can be found here. The shirt's colour is light blue (no idea what specific HEX). Thanks, Nehme1499 (talk) 18:32, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

@Nehme1499: Sorry, got caught up in another project the other day. I assume the triangle on the kit is the association badge of the time? Also, for the socks, I can only really see four clearly in the image: three seem to be white–blue–white with a thin blue band on top, while the one on the far left looks blue–white–blue. I've gone with the former, but let me know if it, or anything else, needs correcting. Also, on an unrelated note, where did you find the given name of the referee? I had trouble looking for it in the source given. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:57, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Also, assuming the player positions listed are correct, I could add a line-up image if you're interested. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:02, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks man, good job! I didn't expect you to actually make the socks, since some players had plain white socks. This works out really well! As per the ref's name, as I don't know Hebrew I obviously had to rely on Google Translate. On the federation's page, it states: "The referee was British Army man John Blackwell." (Hebrew: שופט המשחק היה איש הצבא הבריטי ג'ון בלקוואל.) I would imagine ג'ון to be John, and בלקוואל to be Blackwell. As per the line-up, I just remembered that you did those as well ahaha. If it's not a bother to you, it would be greatly appreciated. One note: I would use the names at The Palestine Post (on the bottom right corner). Some players are called by name, others by surname, and others by nickname. I would use those names, with the spelling provided in the Wiki article (e.g. "Camille" instead of "Kamil", and "Doctor" instead of "Doktor"). Nehme1499 (talk) 21:06, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Alright, now  Done. S.A. Julio (talk) 07:35, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, much appreciated! Nehme1499 (talk) 14:06, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: Also, I remember the previous discussion here regarding the wording "Palestine, British Mandate". FYI, that is the wording FIFA use on their website for the team. However, the qualifying and result history sections are no longer available on the FIFA website following redesigns. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:47, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
I see. Can't we put "Mandatory Palestine" regardless? It seems a bit clunky to have "Palestine, British Mandate". I know we can put name=Mandatory Palestine, but it seems a bit unnecessary. Nehme1499 (talk) 18:52, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Also, why isn't the new flag displaying at 1940 Mandatory Palestine v Lebanon football match? Nehme1499 (talk) 18:54, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: Displays now. And maybe it is a bit clunky, but we do have other teams such as  Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Might be useful to retain the official FIFA wording for World Cup qualifying articles, while other articles can use "Mandatory Palestine". S.A. Julio (talk) 19:30, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

What about  North Korea and  South Korea, for example. Shouldn't those say "Korea Republic" and "Korea PR"? Maybe it's best to keep "Mandatory Palestine" as default, and add name=Palestine, British Mandate in the WC Qualifiying articles. Nehme1499 (talk) 19:33, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

@Nehme1499: Yeah it varies, I think North/South Korea are overwhelmingly the common name. Looking at the note in the lede of Mandatory Palestine, as well as other sources, a variety of names have been used including Mandatory or Mandate Palestine, the British Mandate of/for/in Palestine, British Palestine Mandate, British Palestine, etc. But I don't really mind either way if you change it back. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:04, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
By the way, I've started a peer review about a week ago in view of promoting Lebanon national football team to FA. Maybe, when you get the time, could you take a look at it and give some opinions? It would be really appreciated. Nehme1499 (talk) 21:04, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: Sure, I haven't really done much reviewing before, so I don't know if I'll be the greatest, but I can give it a try. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:53, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

@Nehme1499: Also, where did you find the captain of Mandatory Palestine? I haven't been able to locate this. Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 10:21, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

In the article by The Palestine Post it states: "Caspi made a good leader and netted a couple of goals." Now, I'm not sure if it means that:
  1. Caspi, the captain, scored two goals; or
  2. Caspi scored two goals, thus he made a good leader (but wasn't necessarily the de facto captain).
What do you think? I'm leaning more towards 1, since it says "and", not ", netting...", if that makes sense. Nehme1499 (talk) 13:30, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: Thanks, and yeah I agree with 1 being correct. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:41, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Out of curiosity, why did you want to confirm the ref and captain? Is it just to make sure that the info is correct on Wiki, or are you looking to use the data elsewhere? Nehme1499 (talk) 18:50, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
@Nehme1499: Ah well if I come across any info that is missing/wrong at EU-Football I usually submit a correction. It's a great database that's unmatched for its completeness. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:18, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Seems like a nice website. Too bad I can't really use it for Lebanon ahaha. Nevertheless, if you need anything else let me know. Nehme1499 (talk) 19:30, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

Bracket(s)

Hey, something that was on my mind for quite some time. Why are we showing a bracket at the DFB-Pokal? There was no fix bracket and so it's more like OR and unsourced. Same for the Champions League(s). Any reason why it should not be removed as it "gives" us nothing in my opinion. Kante4 (talk) 17:12, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kante4: Hmm, while the brackets are not fixed, I think visually it can be informative for readers to see, providing a quick knockout summary. And at least for the Champions/Europa League, the bracket is fixed from the quarter-finals onward. S.A. Julio (talk) 07:48, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, and for me a bracket can be used for the quarterfinals on as it is sourced and fixed then. For the DFB-Pokal (and more i guess) it simply is just trivia and OR because it was never fixed and every round is drawn new. There is no purpose to have it, tbh. Kante4 (talk) 09:09, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
@Kante4: I think some statistical websites do generate these brackets for cup competitions, so it could probably be sourced if necessary. Also a few seasons ago the quarterfinal and semifinal draws by UEFA were separate. But I agree it is probably not as useful for the DFB-Pokal compared to the Champions League article. S.A. Julio (talk) 11:15, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Can live with that. Noticed that the FA Cup has one aswell in last year's edition. Would be the same as there isn't a fixed bracket aswell if i'm not wrong. Kante4 (talk) 13:49, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

2019 AFC Asian Cup Group E

Hi, I've noticed that Lebanon's formations at 2019 AFC Asian Cup Group E were a bit messed up (and in turn, your photos based on the formations written in the article). I adjusted Lebanon's two formations (the one vs KSA is correct), could you please fix the names in the pictures when you get the time? Vs Qatar we played in a 5-2-3 formation (the two wide-midfielders are actually full-backs; a 3-4-3 is still acceptable), while vs North Korea in a 4-3-3. If you need clarification let me know. Nehme1499 (talk) 17:24, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

@Nehme1499: Alright  Done. I think I had based it off the AFC broadcast graphics at the time, though they may not have always been accurate. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:52, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I explicitly remember looking at the graphic of the Lebanon - NK game and being shocked ahahahaah. I though "why is the RB at LW? Why is our striker at RW?" But then I just thought that they very likely don't know the players' positions and just put the players together randomly. Anyway, thanks for your work! One thing: since you changed the Qatar game's formation to 5-2-3, can you do the same for the formation vs KSA (from 3-4-3 to 5-2-3)? Nehme1499 (talk) 19:57, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Sure, now  Done. And that NK match had quite the ending, if only they had avoided the two yellow cards... S.A. Julio (talk) 20:17, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Don't get me started... Between the robbery that was Qatar-Lebanon, the yellow card situation (which really was 1, given that the other one was for protesting in the 97'), the fact that we should have scored more than 4 goals vs NK, that blunder by Mehdi Khalil to concede the NK free-kick. God... Nehme1499 (talk) 20:37, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Creating a new professional soccer player profile

Hey S.A. Julio,

Can I ask you to create a new profile for a professional soccer player who has joined Forward Madison FC this season?

Pmarceta (talk) 18:53, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

@Pmarceta: What player? They need to make an appearance in a professional league in order to pass WP:NFOOTY. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:29, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

@S.A. Julio

Thanks for clarifying, I am assuming preseason games don't count?

Pmarceta (talk) 20:47, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

@Pmarceta: That's correct. Which player is it? If they appeared for another team they could pass, otherwise an article can be created when they appear during the season (if it ever even starts). S.A. Julio (talk) 21:33, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Creating a starting line-up graphic for match

Hey S.A. Julio,

I'm trying to track down the template/means of generating the starting line-up graphic for a particular match like this:

I've tried looking all over the web, but cannot seem to track it down. But I noticed you added the graphic for the 2019 MLS Cup, so I figured I would ask. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JSafi ToffeeFan (talkcontribs) 12:54, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

@JSafi ToffeeFan: Sorry for the late reply, this can be done with a vector editor such as Inkscape or Illustrator. If you have any specific requests I'd be happy to help. S.A. Julio (talk) 11:18, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Greek football clubs emblems

Hello friend. How are you?

Do you know how to put in english wikipedia the emblems of these teams as they are in greek wikipedia, in high quality? I did it, but they asked me to reduce it and I didn't know how to do it. As you can see the emblems of these teams in english wikipedia are in quality carpets because they have changed their size. Can you fix it like they are in greek wikipedia?

@GRanemos1: Hello, due to copyright law, if the size of the logos are too large than what is necessary to display on the article, a bot will reduce the dimensions. Though if this causes too much quality to be lost, you can restore the old version of the file and add {{Non-free no reduce}}. Also you could try and locate an SVG version of the logo, which will retain the image quality. S.A. Julio (talk) 11:25, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I've noticed that you've just edited the template. There's an ongoing discussion at the WikiProject talk page relating to uniforming the titles of the articles in that template. If you could give your input that would be great! Thanks, Nehme1499 (talk) 21:09, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Dear S.A. Julio: Thank you, for having a second look at my edits here, as errors happen. However, I don't think your de-facto reverts are justified. I am not sure, what gives you the idea, that Hamburg played in blue shorts. They always play in red shorts when they have the opportunity. The origin of their kits, and their crest can be found in the origin of the club, especially the merger(s) after WWI. If there is no special reason to think they played with blue shorts - especially against an opponent who plays also in blue shorts. The outfit of KSC is ad hoc documentable, albeit it seems that their shorts may have been a different shade or even colour than their tops, judging by photos. This may reflect different types of materials. However, this seems insignificant. In the end, if you have a good reason to think Hamburg played with blue shorts you may wish to proffer a workable argument.

What Antoine "Spitz" Kohn: I have recently undertaken, primarily for my own purposes a check on AFC Ajax managers - which yielded quite usable article improvements for the German versions of de:Vic Buckingham and de:Keith Spurgeon which also have led to lesser improvements of the WP:EN versions. There I als ascertained, that Kohn is known as Antoine and Spitz. My edit to Antoine "Spitz" Kohn enables people who are more familiar with the nomenclature of Ajax to immediately realise that he is the former Ajax coach/manager. Therefore I made meaningful use of this style of linking. It is for the convenience of the user, which should be the foremost goal of WP. I think, there is no good reason why it should not be done so. Not every user has time or interest to click on all individual players. One reason for this may also be, that a plenitude of articles of this kind are in the state of being a permanent stub, omitting even essential parts of players' careers.

I understand and appreciate that you are strongly involved in German football here. On the other side, occasionally you might overdo the micro-managing a bit. I personally, would appreciate not to be treated like an idiot.

On further notes: The German cup competition from (edit: wrong = 1966) 1955 forward was for quite a number of years a secondary calendar year operation. It was deemed financially not very attractive. In their second final KSC - which happened to be in Karlsruhe, because it was hoped to pull a crowd at least there - had a home attendance of only 25,000. The complete changeover to modern modalities did not happen before 1974/75 or thereabouts. Maybe, you wish to analyse this further, because if I do something here, apparently might be subject to heavy micro-management, and I might have to endlessly explain every detail, like here. So it might be more meaningful to restrain my efforts to WP:DE.

Things I cannot do: In the talk page to Bayern Munich I manifested that some jerseys are wrong. I don't know how to change that. Could you do that please.

Best regards, Oalexander (talk) 02:41, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

@Oalexander: Hello, maybe we started off on the wrong foot. I'm not trying to be rude or over-manage, I just wish to follow better Wikipedia practices. Article titles are meant to reflect the WP:COMMONNAME, so piping the wikilink does not really solve the problem. If he is better known as Spitz, the article should be moved to Spitz Kohn. As for the HSV shorts, I found two images online from the match: here and here. I'm no expert at colourising black-and-white images, though using this tool, the shorts appeared to be blue to me. Do you have any other photos, or maybe the colourising is wrong? I just want to avoid any errors being introduced. Also, any contributions to cup articles would be appreciated, the English wiki is missing lots of information on it. I've actually been intending to expand the DFB-Pokal article from the German version, if I get around to it maybe you could help to check the information/translation? Regarding the kits, I could have a look (I'm not great with complex designs), maybe the files already exist on Commons. But if I recall there was a discussion at WT:FOOTY that these type of kit galleries should not really be present on club articles anyways. Cheers, S.A. Julio (talk) 03:17, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
Also, regarding the 1956–57 DFB-Pokal/1957 DFB-Pokal, the DFB list it as the 1956/57 season, it seems better to be consistent and retain the previous title. Also note that the years don't always align for these competitions, such as 2019–20 Scottish League Cup or 1971 World Snooker Championship. Also see 1939 Tschammerpokal Final, the match took place in April 1940 but the match programme refers to the competition as 'Tschammerpokal 1939'. S.A. Julio (talk) 03:28, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
I have sufficiently explained, why the Hamburg shorts are red and not blue. I don't see any point why I should accept your counterintuitive and counterfactual interpretation of shades of grey. If those kits should not be there in the first place, why don't you remove them? I have also sufficiently explained why, I believe It is a good compromise to mentioning Kohn as Antoine "Spitz" Kohn. Antoine and Spitz are both correct. Therefore my solution. No point in me, wasting my limited time on article-moving discussions, which, notwithstanding how they end, are pointless for the visitor.
I also believe in consistency as evidence in facts is more important than adhering to schemes which are plainly wrong. As I pointed out in the cup final 1957 talk: the business end of the competition was entirely in the 1957/58 season. That the Tschammerpokal 1939 does not compare due to the fact that this was a postponement due to war and not a regular feature. For the same reason, I accept that numerous Brazilian competitions, at hand I also would know of an Uruguayan championship, finished in the following year due to plenty of reasons, and are not are to be dated as per when the they were actually decided (nobody would do that). I personally don't care a lot to check the Scottish example (I am sure, there is a special reason). Here is more readily available evidence about the calendar-year nature of the cup competition then: "der Wettbewerb wird während eines Kalenderjahres ausgespielt". This coincides with the facts. More would be findable in the Archives of Hamburger Abendblatt.
What my co-operation here is concerned: "Wiki" is Hawaiian for "fast". I don't edit here, because I have tons of time. Not as much time, like people who discus in a biennial rhythm if a category is called "Bayern players" "Bayern footballers" "Footballers (Bayern)" or a dozen varieties thereof. Article histories are loaded with this stuff, but all too often significantly lack content. Instead of discussing minor issues endlessly, I rather do things which create additional knowledge for users. Our difference is, I am outcome orientated, whilst WP:EN is more concerned with process. I am glad, that I at least managed to get the FC Bayern logos right over the years.
What my co-operation here is concerned: Wikipedia does not need me. I may revert to general inactivity here, and focus on the odd contribution which I consider essential, as I held it in previous years.
Another thing that needs changing: The match diagrams of the 1976 Intercontinental Cup. Müller was, as always since the departure of Ohlhauser, centreforward (with the exception of him playing libero a couple of times 1978/79ish), acting in front of what manager Dettmar Cramer called back then "a densely populated midfield" ("dicht bevölkertes Mittelfeld"). Hoeneß as CF is wrong, Dürnberger was left and Torstensson right (sides have to be changed here). The rest I don't care, as it would involve more work than it is worth.

Sad news re Ronhjones

Hello, I am very sorry to report that Ronhjones passed away with his wife in a house fire last April. Since your user talk page came up among the ones he most edited with non-automated messages per his edit count statistics, I thought I should let you know. Graham87 12:29, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

@Graham87: Thank you for the message, I was unaware. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:08, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

AWB & height removal

Firstly height removal is not automated as part of AWB, that is entirely manual, and secondly it is well established at FOOTY that height should be directly cited in the infobox. GiantSnowman 21:06, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Intercontinental Cup

Hi Julio, I saw that you canceled my change. I believe it is relevant, both because it is a correct example but also because it is a European example that was missing on the page, and then it's just a row ;)--Otger Gustafsson (talk) 20:54, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello Julio. I was testing out some squadlist variations earlier using a screenreader, and I noticed that {{Fba}} doesn't work properly with them, as it doesn't use a version of the flag with alt text. The screenreader simply reads out the trigramme. Is there any possibility you can get it to use {{flagicon}} as the source for the flag, as that will provide alt text (this is what I used when I created {{FIFA Country codes}} before I knew your template existed). Cheers, Number 57 22:07, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

@Number 57: Now fixed. Since the flag is accompanied by text, similar to {{flag}} or {{fb}}, the alt text was not defined. However, I've added it now when the trigramme is used. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:30, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Positions by round tables

Why do you keep removing the positions by round tables? They are nessercery as they show the progress of the team throughout the season. Plus plenty of other pages have it such as La Liga, Serie A, and the Eredivisie. I understand that quite a few people don't want them but lots do want them and the fact that they have been consistently added the multiple pages and updated for years, and that on pages which don't have them such as the Premier League they keep being added, often by IP's or new editors shows that they are considered nessercery by a lot of people, while I it is quite a small group (abet rather experienced) that keeps removing them. REDMAN 2019 (talk) 15:43, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

@REDMAN 2019: Hello, I apologise for not getting back sooner, I've been somewhat disorganised due to some computer issues recently and therefore less active. Regarding the tables, I believe there were a few past discussions at WT:FOOTY, it seems to go against WP:NOTSTATS. There are external statistical websites that provide such information, it does not seem to be necessary on Wikipedia. There is also the issue of matches played outside of their scheduled round, which is common in some countries, and how that should be sourced. S.A. Julio (talk) 07:50, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi, if you're going to revert my edits re flags could you at least keep in place my other changes, mostly copyedits and link updates. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 22:03, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

@Mattythewhite: I did retain your fixes, and converted the flags to {{fbaicon}}. I'm not going to change the other finals, probably best to wait while the discussion is still ongoing. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:07, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, I thought you'd fully reverted for some reason. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:10, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
@Mattythewhite: Also, isn't "Milan" usually used as the shortened version of the club name? Same as "Juventus", "Liverpool", "Sevilla", etc.? S.A. Julio (talk) 23:14, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
I would say that A.C. Milan is more recognisable and commonly used than just Milan. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:19, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
@Mattythewhite: Though usually abbreviations are not included when linking to a club? Unless it is the common style for clubs in countries such as Sweden or Germany. S.A. Julio (talk) 23:26, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
WP:KARLSRUHER provides guidance for German clubs. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:55, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi, so what you're inferring is that 'PSV' and 'A.C. Milan' are *not* correct? They're the most recognisable names those clubs are known by. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:16, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
@Mattythewhite: The title of the article is "PSV Eindhoven", which is meant to reflect the common name, and the lead states the club is "internationally known as PSV Eindhoven". Therefore, I don't see a need to pipe the link, just as Tottenham Hotspur is not piped to "Tottenham". Meanwhile, the lead of A.C. Milan states the club is "÷commonly referred to as A.C. Milan or simply Milan". As is common practice, abbreviations (such as FC, SC, AS, FK, CF, etc.) are truncated in wikilinks for clubs (e.g. Barcelona, Roma), Milan is no different. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:32, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
The naming of PSV and Tottenham Hotspur are not entirely equivalent, as Eindhoven isn't *officially* part of the club's name, whereas Hotspur is of course part of Tottenham Hotspur's name. And whether the PSV article title actually reflects the most commonly used name of the club I'm not convinced. A quick Google News search for "PSV Eindhoven" football brings up 277,000 results, meanwhile "PSV" football -Eindhoven yields a much more substantial 1,530,000. English speaking source seem to greatly prefer just PSV.
As you quote yourself, the opening sentence at A.C. Milan states that the club is "commonly referred to as A.C. Milan or simply Milan" (my italics). Primacy is given to the name A.C. Milan. I'm acutely aware that we *tend to* pipe out abbreviations, but that doesn't mean it's appropriate in the case of every club. In my experience, that club is quite rarely referred to as *just* Milan, not least because there are two major clubs from the same city. Google News would again suggest that I'm not too far off the mark: 8,800,000 results for "AC Milan" football compared to 7,500,000 for "Milan" football -AC -Inter. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:11, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
While Eindhoven is not in the club name, it still forms part of the common name in English, even UEFA's website use it as the full name of the club. Some news articles may use shorter terms such as "Man Utd", "Wolves" or "Shakhtar", though this does not necessarily indicate the common shortened club name. As for Milan, the order of the terms does not necessarily indicate priority, the same as Neymar's lead says he is "commonly known as Neymar Jr. or simply Neymar". Also, there is no real confusion with Inter (the club would never be referred to without 'Inter[nazionale]'), and if both A.C. Milan and Milan are in common use, it would make more sense to use the version which follows the typical formatting of club names (as is used in thousands of articles, and consistently in the history of European/Italian competition articles). Hi

You said you love thunderstorm why?

Bundesliga rules

Why did You change my edit? I'm talking about rules not technical stuff. There is NO "Head-to-head goal difference" in new rules! — Preceding unsigned comment added by IjonTihy (talkcontribs) 14:02, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@IjonTihy: The third tiebreaker on page 3 of the regulations states that the aggregated results of the head-to-head matches are taken into account ("das Gesamtergebnis aus Hin- und Rückspiel im direkten Vergleich"). So head-to-head points, and then goal difference, is used. S.A. Julio (talk) 06:46, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Ah, so You interpret "Gesamtergebnis" as not only points but also goals? Yeap, maybe... :)

French Polynesia/Tahiti national team

Hi, I ask you when you are the one who responded to my editing request for flags.

First question

Should not French Polynesia national handball team (+women +U21) be named Tahiti national handball team? Since IHF uses the name Tahiti[13]

Second question

Is it possible to merge the templates National sports teams of Tahiti and National sports teams of French Polynesia in to one template? To me it looks silly with two templates for practically the same area, although it seems that Badminton Oceania uses the name French Polynesia[14] (look at the name in the URL for the flag[15]) DenSportgladeSkåningen (talk) 09:28, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

@DenSportgladeSkåningen: Since the IHF do use "Tahiti", the article should probably be moved. As for badminton, the page you linked does use the code "TAH", and the website uses "Tahiti" more often (example here). Both names are listed on the member associations page, though the name of the governing body is the "Tahitian Badminton Federation", so the badminton article could probably be moved as well. I think only one template is necessary, though probably under the name "French Polynesia" given that is the name of the region being represented, similar to Template:National sports teams of Taiwan. S.A. Julio (talk) 14:16, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Help again

Hey, first of all you were correct in adding the matches back in the several templates, sorry for that.

Now my question and i know it's handball but you seem pretty skilled in the technical stuff. Suddenly the eurohandball.com changed their whole layout and the links from Template:EHF and the wikidata links are not working anymore (at least so far)... Example, this is now changed to this. Can you somehow help, botwise or something else? Any idea would be helpful. Or do you think they will redirect those old links to the new one? Kante4 (talk) 08:06, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Kante4: Sorry for the late reply, seems to be working now with the history subdomain? Though there does not seem to be any correlation between the old and new URLs unfortunately (as far as I can tell). The old website will probably be closed eventually, same just happened with FIFA. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:45, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, but the new information or stats won't be updated i guess. Kante4 (talk) 21:40, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Sponsors

Sponsors are not "factual information on the branding of the awards". It is namedropping a company name whenever the award is mentioned to satisfy contracts with said advertiser. We are not an MLS media partner, so we do not have to do that. It feels like spam. ViperSnake151  Talk  06:58, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
