How to request a new version of a spoken article?[edit]

How is the best way to go about requesting a new spoken article that will get the most attention in hopes someone will create one? The written article in question already has a spoken article but it's from 2010, so obviously the article in question has changed a lot since then. As such I don't think it would fall under a spoken article request, as this seems to be for pages that don't already have a spoken version (although I may be wrong here so clarification would be helpful). Also, the original uploader has been inactive on Wikipedia and other related projects for years, so I can't ask them to make a new version, nor do I think I'm comfortable recording myself. I've asked this question on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia and Category talk:Spoken Wikipedia requests without any responses. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Helper201 (talk) 01:51, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Helper201 you can request a recording by placing {{Spoken article requested|~~~|reason}} on the article's talk page. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 02:03, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CanonNi but as I mentioned it wouldn't technically be a spoken article request as the article already has a spoken version, it’s just very old and needs a new or updated version. Helper201 (talk) 02:06, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you think recording it is so important, Helper201, could you perhaps record it yourself? -- 02:51, 17 June 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hoary (talkcontribs) [reply]

Querying all values for a parameter in an infobox.[edit]

If there was Template:Infobox Guinea Pig and I wanted to know all of the unique values that had been given to the parameter "tail color", is there an easy way to search this? Let's say that there are more than 500 uses of the template. Ideally, I'd like to then be see that there is one with cyan and then able to tell the one article that had tail color = Cyan, but I figure the second could be done with a regex search.Naraht (talk) 12:37, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article hijacked by unrelated company for 14 years and no-one noticed?[edit]

    BlueSpace Federal (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Odd case I came across today.

    • 18 August 2005: An IP user creates new article on (and named) BlueSpace, an IBMSteelcase collaboration on a prototype "office of the future".
    • 6 June 2010: With their first edit, Justin143143 adds content on a different entity named BlueSpace – a software company in the defence industry – shunting content on the other BlueSpace further down, with the summary "the IBM BlueSpace desk furniture project is now essentially dead".
    • 7 June 2010: Another IP user (possibly Justin143143 logged out?), with their first edit, removes everything related to IBM BlueSpace, with the summary "The IBM BlueSpace Office was a failed research project that happened in 2002. It is no longer relevant." The article has now been completely transformed into covering an entirely different topic.
    • No-one notices for the next 14 years. The usual chronic COI editing ensues. The article is moved to "Bluespace (software)" in 2020 and "BlueSpace Federal" in 2023.

The defence industry BlueSpace seems to fail our notability guidelines for companies, but the IBM BlueSpace actually seems to pass – on a quick search it's got coverage in the NYT, The Register, ZDNet, The Globe and Mail etc.

I'd like to put the defence industry BlueSpace up for deletion but rewrite and retain the IBM BlueSpace. How should I go about doing this? I can think of two ways:

    1. Restore the article to its last unhijacked version (12 April 2009), move it back to "BlueSpace", rewrite an article on the IBM BlueSpace from there. If someone really feels the need for an article on the defence industry BlueSpace, they can write their own somewhere else.
    2. PROD/AfD the article and separately expand the redirect BlueSpace into a new article on the IBM BlueSpace.

    Which is preferable? – Teratix 14:41, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Reporting IP-hopping vandalism[edit]

Hi - I've been going through recent "bad" changes lately and sometimes there's articles that get hit by a vandal over-and-over, but with different IP's. Today it's Multan Electric Power Company - an IP hopper keeps repeatedly changing the first line to stupid stuff. It gets reverted but they just do it again. We are probably not interested in a new logo unless it is already in actual use on the internet. If it is in actual use, there is no need to e-mail it: just request the change on the article's talk page and provide a link to the web page that uses the logo. Same for the seal. Hi IP 125.253.110.95. When you use the {{cite journal}} template for a citation (like you did here), you need to make sure you add something for the |journal= parameter to avoid getting a "missing periodical" error. All you need to do is re-check the source of the citation and add the name of the missing journal. If you're adding citations, you should make more of an effort to figure out what type they are before doing so. It describes what kind of source it is at the very top of the url you linked to above.
Some other things to consider when citing sources are to not use MOS:ALLCAPS for the name of source being cited in |title= parameter and to avoid excessive quoting when using the |quote= parameter; the former can help avoid a single citation being (unintentionally) given undo emphasis, and the latter can help avoid any possible copyright related issues due to over quoting. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Wrong info?[edit]

I was recently reading the Wikipedia article for Hermitage, Pennsylvania. The article mentions that Žipov, Slovakia, is a twin city. However, I couldn't find any citations to support this claim, and after some searching online, I also wasn't able to unearth any sources that confirm it.

I just wanted to double-check before potentially making any edits to the page. Does anyone happen to have any information or resources that verify Žipov as a sister city? Giantskeleton (talk) 06:55, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Giantskeleton. The WP:BURDEN falls upon whoever added that information to the article to also provide a citation in support. You can remove it you want, or you can add a template like {{citation needed}} (just make sure to date the template) where the reference should go. It's unsourced content for sure, but it's not really something serious like a WP:BLPREMOVE type of violation; so, perhaps the template would be OK to use in a case like this. For what it's worth, that bit of information was added in December 2022 with this edit, but the person who added it only made one edit with that account; in other words, it could've just be someone messing around. You could try asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania to see whether that was the case. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:35, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Pascal Praud[edit]

    Hello,

I have made edits on the page Pascal Praud: I’ve added a French IPA translation, removed some very political language (e.g. “archconservative”), and added a list of employers in the infobox as per the sources. But my edits have been reverted and classified as “vandalism”. Could someone help me here? A point of contention seems to be that I remove the term “far-right” from the first sentence (it is still later mentioned in the introduction). But in my previous encounters with Wikipedia edits, I was told it was policy to keep the first sentence neutral: name, birthdate, occupation. I also do not think it is necessary to classify a sports commentator’s political views in the first sentence. Let me know what you think—and if you think I’m justified, please don’t hesitate to restore my additions. If you are asking about the message This article may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject at the top of the article, the message tells you itself what needs to be done, and there are several links in it that point to pages with more explanation.
If you mean something else, please clarify.
I note that several of the references are to sources published by the university itself. These are not independent, and should not be cited at all, except for the limited purposes explained in WP:SPS. If information in the article is available only from those sources, it should not be in the article (again, unless it meets those limited purposes).
Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Hi Rizos01. First, thank you for donating to the WMF, but whether article content is allowed to stay or is removed as nothing to do with donations to the Wikipedia Foundation. The two are completely unrelated.
Next, when it comes to individual entries in "Notable people" sections, there are often disagreements as who should be included and often inclusion depends whether common selection criteria have been established for the article. So, for future reference, it's usually a good idea to check to see whether such criteria have been established on the article's talk page (including any talk page archives) before adding to the list. If you don't find any, add someone to the list, but your addition is subsequently undone by another person, you should seek clarification on the article's talk page in accordance with WP:DR. Generally, the most basic criteria for inclusion is that the person you want to add already has a stand-alone Wikipedia article written about them, and their suitability for inclusion is clearly established and supported by citations to reliable sources in that article. Anything else tends to be a bit of a gray area where inclusion might require further discussion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:47, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have different opinion, which is with the change of qualification for the Paris Summer Olympics, the 2023 World Cup will serve as one of the three Olympic qualification tournaments. Only eight teams will participate in this edition (FIVB information). References 19 and 21 are the same - shouldn't they be "doubled up"? I cannot do this. Please assist. Thank you 115.70.23.77 (talk) 03:33, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Help for english translation[edit]

Hello everyone, I would like to translate to english pages that I have already created and published on the French wikipedia, but I cannot find any way to get them approved. (one has been stuck for more than 2 months: example here : Draft:The Oath of Cyriac

I have the translations ready, I just need help from a member who has the built-in translation tool.

    thanks a lot Superjuju360 (talk) 06:50, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Superjuju360, it has been stuck because no reviewer has got around to reviewing it. I'm not aware of any need for any "translation tool". Suggestions: Has it been shown with Catalan, French, Spanish, or English subtitles? What's its title in Catalan, French, Spanish, or English? It "has been very well received": OK, good, but for what? (You might add such details as "Writing in [title of newspaper], [name of critic] praised the film for its ABC portrayal of XYZ[reference]".) -- Hoary (talk) 07:14, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what an account is, if not an ID; and I haven't heard of "character IDs". Your account, or ID, can't be "unbanned" (by which I guess you mean unblocked) if we don't know what it is. What's the name of the blocked account/ID, Nitin kamdi? -- Hoary (talk) 10:51, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nitin kamdi: This is a help desk for the encyclopedia Wikipedia. Are you referring to an account somewhere else like a video game? We have many articles about video games and websites. People sometimes confuse us with one of our article subjects. We can only help with Wikipedia and certain other websites using the same MediaWiki software as us. Swahili page may have an error?[edit]

I cannot read Swahili, however, at the bottom of this page: https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses_Wetangula [4] (which is apparently using this template? here: https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigezo:Kenya-Ministers_of_Foreign_Affairs [5]. Where it says "Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Kenya" displays wider that the rest of the page, which reduces the size of majority of the article text.

I thought someone here could help. Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 15:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You would be wrong, as this is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. We largely cannot speak Swahili either. Remsense 15:03, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooligan: We do sometimes offer help with other wikis. It took me some time to figure out what you meant because it doesn't happen in my browser. The template had a very long string without spaces. It sounds like your browser shrinks the whole page to display the entire string at the same time instead of offering horizontal scrolling as normal. I added spaces. Does [6] stop your problem? PrimeHunter (talk) 16:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that resolved the display issue. I appreciate your prompt and courteous help!
The first response received here by @Remsense was not helpful and the negative tone of the communication may keep others editors from seeking future "help" at this Help Desk.
Again, thank you @PrimeHunter for taking some of your time to fix this small problem. Your good work (and that of many others) is why I occasionally seek assistance here at the Help Desk. Best regards, -- Ooligan (talk) 16:49, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Need an Editor[edit]

How might I find someone proficient to edit a friend's article? Article has many references and names that link to further articles. Phrzbyphil (talk) 15:23, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You may use the article talk page of an existing article to propose edits in the form of an edit request(click for instructions). 331dot (talk) 15:29, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Phrzbyphil: Note that edit requests are generally only useful if you have a clear, specific, and uncontroversial edit in mind (and are unable to edit the page yourself). If you want to bring attention to a general problem with an article, you can add a cleanup tag to the article, start a discussion on its talk page, or bring it up at a relevant WikiProject or noticeboard. jlwoodwa (talk) 01:47, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, what edits are needed here? Having "many references and names that link to further articles" sounds like a good thing – we don't want {{unreferenced}} and {{dead end}} articles! It might help if you paste the name of the article here, so we can see what's wrong with it. jlwoodwa (talk) 01:51, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

moving a draft out of my sandbox[edit]

I have prepared a draft article in my article wizard sandbox. It is ready for publication. There is no visible SUBMIT button. No visible MORE button. I have been advised to add {{AfC submission|||ts=20240619154232|u=Andrewcliftonpayne|ns=4}} "at the top". What does that mean? The Talk button is red. What do I do? Andrewcliftonpayne (talk) 15:42, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Andrewcliftonpayne. I have disabled the template which you added in this section, which was submitting this help desk for review!. If you add the same string to your draft as you added here, and then save (publish) your change, it will appear as a box including a button to submit it for review.
The "Talk" link is red because nobody has yet created that particular talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 16:03, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi Andrewcliftonpayne,
I've moved a draft you created over to Draft:William Boleyn Archdeacon of Winchester d.1582 because you appeared to have created it in USERSPACE rather than DRAFTSPACE. And I've added the {{AfC submission/draft}} template so that you can click on Submit when it's ready. -- D'n'B-t -- 17:32, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All of a sudden I have to click on the magnifying glass to start a search.[edit]

Long time user and donor. Since I usually use Wikipedia if I have a question I am perplexed to see that I now have to click to start a search instead of the search window already being present. After a few decades of knowing the search window will be present, muscle memory kicks in and I get discombobulated. Then I wonder why this change was made and can't figure out why. Time starts ticking by and I realized that I will never get this wasted time back. Yet, inquiring minds want to know. Why did you remove the search window and would you please put it back or allow a change of url when the search window is present so that I can save the url equipped with the opened search window to my Quick Launch Bar. And if you would be so kind your could make the mouse cursor default to the search bar when opened. Fewer clicks. Less carpal tunnel. I'm using two mouses now to reduce carpal tunnel. Same brand and model of mouse so the driver just sees one mouse input. I point using my right hand and click with the thumb of my left hand. This really helps! Orange Punkin (talk) 20:36, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Orange Punkin The default "skin" for Wikipedia is now WP:VECTOR22 and as that link explains (see screenshot on that page) the search bar should be top-centre of the page. There are various other skins available if that doesn't suit you, which you can experiment with at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. Mike Turnbull (talk) 21:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Orange Punkin: Vector replaces the search bar with a magnifying glass icon in narrow windows. Other skins don't do that. Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets has the option "Focus the cursor in the search bar on loading the Main Page". It doesn't work when Vector 2022 only shows the magnifying glass. See also Wikipedia:FAQ/Main Page#Why doesn't the cursor appear in the search box, like with Google? PrimeHunter (talk) 21:21, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Given that this is also being discussed at WP:ANI#Can you please help, it's probably best that further discussion take place there. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:43, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Marksullivanformby If the information is in a Wikipedia article and has legal implications, including libel, please send an email to info-en-qwikipedia.org who should be able to assist you. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:51, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you and yes I do currently have a lawyer working on the abuse I am receiving. This will also be mentioned in court. Thank you for your help and advice. 🙏🏼 Marksullivanformby (talk) 21:27, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marksullivanformby: Please also take a look at WP:BLPSELF for some more information you might find helpful. Negative content about of the subject of an article can be allowed as long as it reflects what WP:SECONDARY WP:RELIABLESOURCES are saying, it's not WP:UNDUE, and it's written from WP:NPOV as explained in WP:LUC. Please also remember that WP:BLPCOI applies to all parties trying to use Wikipedia as part of a WP:REALWORLD dispute; so, you need to be very careful about what you post about others on any Wikipedia page to avoid problems related to WP:OUTING and other relevant Wikipedia policies. I also highly suggest you refrain from posting anything related to real world legal action you might be taking against others because these could be seen as a violation of WP:NLT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:37, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
