Citing a dataset of GIS information

@Floydian: I don't see any cite templates specific to this purpose. Existing usage seems to be mostly raw links or {{Cite web}}. I'd so something like:

On the non-mobile version of Wikipedia, click on "Preferences" at the top, and under the "User Profile" tab scroll down and you should see checkboxes under "Email Options." @Lovesickpom:. Are you aware that Covid-19 lockdown restrictions may result in your partner being quarantined for up to 14 days in a hotel after landing? At whose expense is currently under discussion. Airline carriers operating inbound flights into the UK may well require a certified negative Covid-19 test for all passengers within a couple of days or so before boarding the flight. The UK is currently under severe lockdown restriction. We have had 100,000 deaths due to rampant coronavirus infection, which is currently a major threat to public health and the NHS. Hotels, restaurants and pubs, and non-essential shops are closed for the foreseeable future. removal of templates

Query regarding the removal of templates. Though the article on Ted Jenner (New Zealand writer) contains a number of verifiable references the template has still not been removed. I (Ted Jenner!)tried removing it myself last week to no avail. Wikipedia does not have "profiles", it has articles. People who purport to be "wiki experts" likely have no official standing and cannot ban anyone from Wikipedia. Wikipedia includes articles on subjects deemed to be notable by Wikipedia's own standards - the subject itself is not asked for any input into that whatsoever. These decisions are not time bound as a company (or individual) could become notable at any point (i.e a subject that doesn't need a Wikipedia article today might have a 5,000 word one tomorrow) so that '5 years' claim is some bullshit. My situation concerns the articles on the Eurovision Song Contest. I find it infuriating that they don't show the logo on an article for a contest of Eurovision preview when hovering over a link to said article. It instead shows a map of all the participating countries in said contest. I think it would be much better for the logo of the contest. The participation map also shows on the results page when searching for the article on the inbuilt Wikipedia search bar at the top of the page. I understand the situation. It has nothing to do with Google. It's when you hover over a wikilink, the image in the preview isn't the one used in the infobox. This is a technical problem that I think can only be fixed by the developer. Enjoyer — talk 11:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

It's not a bug. The software intentionally uses specific images and not ones necessarily in the infobox - pretty sure it picks one of the first four images based on some criteria. I'll see if I can find the page for you. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski ^{(talk • contribs)} 11:44, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Searching for Eurovision on mobile

For anyone else who was confused for a hot minute, there are images that come up when you search - but only on mobile, as screen-shotted (both browser and app it seems). Pretty similar to page previews but I would image they are different features in practice. It would seem that its looking for the first "image" using only the inline image code so it's skipping things in templates like the infobox. That makes sense to an extent - you wouldn't want it including the padlock from a protection template for instance - but I think I agree that the image in the infobox is probably the best choice in most cases. This is however, an issue with the Wikimedia software so as Enjoyer of World said, it would need to raised as a development ticket and probably take some time to even get accepted - but if you feel strongly about it then I would encourage you to raise it at the technical village pump who might have a better idea of whether it's worth taking further --Paul ❬talk❭ 11:59, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

We have two preview features. The opt-in "Navigation popups" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets shows the logo for Eurovision Song Contest 1998. The question is about the default feature "page previews" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. It shows the page image which is used in several places and is determined by mw:Extension:PageImages#Image choice. I'm not sure why it picks File:ESC 1998 Map.svg for Eurovision Song Contest 1998. It may be because File:ESC 1998 logo.png has a non-free license. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:27, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

From my experience, fair use images are not used in previews. I would assume this is because the fair use license states that the image will only be used on the specific page, not in previews or at other locations. What is the limit for pinging members in ref desk?

@Rizosome: The limit is 50 in the same edit. The edit must be signed. The page history shows you added the attempted pings in later edits after signing so none of the editors were actually pinged. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:15, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

@Rizosome: 50 is the software limit. It should almost never be used in practice. The user mention has to be added in the same edit as the signature so [3] doesn't work. See more at mw:Manual:Echo. There are unclear rules if you edit existing content. The only safe way is to add a new post with mentions and a signature. At Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo you can enable "Successful mention" and "Failed mention" if you want to know whether your pings work. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:37, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

The English company page of Nokian Tyres in Wikipedia is outdated on many accounts. Our current CEO is Jukka Moisio, and Bridgestone has not been our largest minority shareholder for a while now.

There are also other outdated references, for instance: CEO Kim Gran describes the Russian consumer as having a "love affair" with the Nokian brand citing that it stems from tyres which fits the local weather conditions and a genuine need in the market. -> We have had 3 CEO's since Kim Grahn, referencing his view as if he was still in charge does not seem relevant In 2009, the North American market accounted for over 10% of the company's net sales (figure is 12 years old) Nokian Tyres has a tyre subsidiary based in LaVergne, Tennessee (USA). In that market, Nokian Tyres sell only to independent dealers, some of whom use the tyre products to fill in gaps in their product lines instead of an exclusive or majority share. This results in some dealers being knowledgeable about specific tyres but not Nokian Tyre's full tyre product range.[45] -> Completely outdated, stems from an article from 2005

What to do about citations for Communities, (ie LGBTQIA+) under-represented in "Legitimate" Sources

I when looking up the proper format to cite for references when updating LGBT Articles particularly in re: Bisexual+ Topics, was distressed and stymied to find that History.com; The Medium; LiveJournal, some of HuffPo Queer et al seem to be frowned on. Given the undeniable issues that (1) there are just not THAT many Books or Articles by, for, about the Bi+ Community that are not Bizzaro Hogwash, Porn, or Hysterical Religious Tracts that are found in Mainstream Sources (2) the well-documented economic poverty of a Group, that itself is a Sub-group, of a still marginalized cultural group in much of the mainstream, so that disenfranchisement has forced them to turn to free/lowcost online media to publish. @CyntWorkStuff: I think the sections at WP:RS/SPS and WP:SPS may be of interest to you. I think it'll depend on each case, which sources exactly you're talking about and what you're trying to reference, etc, but per WP:SPS: Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications. My understanding of that is that if the author is an 'expert' in the field, who has published work in reliable sources (books/journals) before, then if they write content for those sorts of websites you mentioned, then those individual sources could be used. I have written and substantially many Wikipedia pages, typically about historical figures and contemporaries who stand out in my profession. Most recently (last fall) I submitted an article on Barry N. Haack, a recently retired professor who is a pioneer in the field of remote sensing. The draft article was immediately critiqued for lack of references (although there were many). Many more were added, and the article we resubmitted nearly five months ago. So far, no editor has looked at it. What does URL live status mean at the end of a reference

@Wikieditor6557: see the documentation at {{cite web}}, which is a massive tangle of information which is likely to make your eyes glaze over. The URL status is unused unless the archive URL is set. When url-status=live, it means that the original URL is still good, but the reference is also available at the archive site. This affects the way the reference is presented to the reader, so the reader will click on the original and only go to the archive if the original has died. As an editor you should put it in only if the original URL is still live and you also have an archive URL, and you have a suspicion that the original is likely to remain live for awhile. -Arch dude (talk) 03:21, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Question about categories

How is it decided whether an article, or the category of the same name, or both, will be included in a given supercategory? For example, both United States and Category:United States are located in Category:Superpowers, only United States is included in Category:Transcontinental countries, only United States is located in Former British colonies, but only Category:United States is located in Category:Former British colonies and protectorates in the Americas. —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 07:44, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

@Naddruf: Not everybody who adds an article to a category knows all of the categories that exist, so if there are some that should be added, you are always welcome to do so. Hi Ktin, that's a good question. Unfortunately it's not mentioned at mw:Wikimedia Apps/iOS FAQ. The Featured Article card is the same as on wp:en main page. Picture of the Day is from Commons rather than 'pedia; Commons:Picture of the day says that the POTD is selected from Featured Pictures, but I couldn’t find who chooses that or where it's discussed. On This Day currently appears to have the same items as January 31#Events. Places I guess might be random if the app has no access to location services, maybe with some filter so that you only get good articles or major places (just guessing there). Top Read would, I suppose, be auto-generated from pageview stats – I wonder if it's for previous calendar day, dynamic throughout the day, or some kind of rolling multi-day average? Jimmy Savile

Savile honours were either removed or were acknowledged that they passed with his death. Please help with updating article

Hi there, I am trying to update this article with current information and it keeps being rejected. I did a "request edit" in the talk page disclosed that I am a family member of Annabelle Chvostek's. I am trying to be as neutral and factual as possible. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it. Thank you! Here is the additional info for the page:

The En volve article you cite makes no attempt to refute these allegations and cites no sources. En volve describes itself as conservative. That site is a set of web pages with a layout like a news site, but it is apparently just a blog. It has none of the hallmarks of a reliable source. In particular. There is no statement as to who runs the site, or who the publisher is. @Jimfi1955: Wikipedia strives for a neutral point of view (WP:NPOV). We do this by requiring that our editors cite their assertions to reliable sources (WP:RS). I am the person who's page this is about. Why is so hard to make changes? The page keeps erasing my changes after hours of making changes. This is very time consuming for me and a waste of time if someone random can just erase it. Please advise. How does someone who knows nothing about the person allowed to edit and disregard a page when they have references and links to prove the validity of the information? Hello. I'm afraid that, like many people, you misunderstand what Wikipedia is. It is an encyclopaedia, not social media or a directory. Articles should be neutrally written, and based almost entirely on independent sources, not on what the subject says or wants to say. If we have an article about you, you should not be editing it, as you are likely to find it difficult to keep the tone neutral; but you are welcome to suggest edits to the article on its talk page, using the edit request procedure. The changes you made to the article were unsourced, and we have no way of telling whether unsourced material is correct or not, so we generally remove it, especially from articles about living people. I added this userbox to my User page since I am an autoconfirmed user, but when I click verify it says "No user found". Why is this?

@KaraLG84: Autoconfirmed is assigned automatically and doesn't appear at Special:ListUsers. {{User wikipedia/Autoconfirmed}} uses {{User rights}}. I have changed the latter to use another feature for autoconfirmed. Your verify link now works. Before this, it failed on all 574 users with the userbox. Don't worry about it, CountryCoolGuy12345: it would be unusual for an editor to be banned or blocked for making mistakes; and another editor reverted yours about six minutes later. Hello. It's not clear whether you mean you have a picture to upload, or want help finding a picture. If you have a picture of him that you took (so it is your own work), you may upload it to Wikimedia Commons, using the Upload Wizard, and then inset it into an article. But if you haven't got a picture you took yourself, it is much more complicated, as the copyright owner has to license it to be free for reuse (not just give permission for Wikipedia to use it). But if you want to work on that article, much much much more important than cosmetic things like pictures would be adding citations to reliable sources for all the information which is currently not sourced. --ColinFine (talk) 23:10, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

ارتین محمدیان, are you referring to a complete name change of your account or just on English Wikipedia? The (slight) problem with that solution, ارتین محمدیان is that in order to ping you (as I have done here), most editors on English Wikipedia will not have an Arabic Keyboard, so will have to copy and paste your username. That in turn is tricky if you're not used to it, because of the way the editor works with selections on RTL text. (I thinik it is especially likely that they may miss the alif at the beginning: some people may not even realise it is a letter). It's not a major problem, but my guess is that you will not get some intended notifications, because people either copy your username wrong, or give up on pinging you at all. --ColinFine (talk) 22:58, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

The rule of thumb with using “a” versus “an” is if the following word starts with a vowel, or has a silent consonant like with “hour”, you need “an”. Otherwise you use “a”. So it’s “a disruptive editor” instead of “an disruptive editor”. And why also the rapid undo of the IP edits? This does not fit the profile of a brand new editor. Category question

Category:Former buildings and structures in Finland now includes both Vyborg railway station and Vyborg railway station (1913). However, this is a little bit confusing, as Vyborg railway station hasn't gone anywhere, it's still standing there in Vyborg, and in active use. It's just a "former building in Finland" because Vyborg itself is no longer in Finland. Is this OK, or should there be some sort of separate category for buildings that aren't former but just formerly were somewhere? JIP | Talk 00:19, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Category:Former buildings and structures says: This category is for buildings and structures that no longer exist. Nope. The only source in Ludacris "supporting" that claim was IMDb, which is unreliable. (The Chicago Tribune reference only mentioned his middle school.) I've removed it. The author goes on to say that they are both 37, so there's a good chance they were there at the same time, but then makes no claim about the truth of the statement. Page Protection question

Hi there, I am looking for some guidance on page protection. Recently several IPs and editors have repeatedly deleted the "Recent Usage" section of the Pine Tree Flag page. This section now has multiple reliable sources cited, namely journalists and photojournalists, as well as linking to a short posting by the commentator Andrew Sullivan about the flag's recent use.

One IP making these deletions repeatedly calls these paragraphs "communist propaganda" and "hate speech" in his/her edit summaries for the deletions. This anonymous editor is not using the Talk page, which does have a discussion started on recent use of the flag. Neither this anonymous user or the other deleters are elaborating on their rationale. A national news article about the events at the US Capitol on Jan. 6 2021 linked to this wikipedia page which may have increased its traffic.

A request to semi-protect the page based on deletion of reliably sourced information temporarily was just rejected. The reasons given by the admin who rejected the request were that the citations include a link to a blog (the Andrew Sullivan opinion piece) and that a content dispute should be in the talk section.

If the Sullivan link is removed would it be worth it to make another request to try again to get this page temporarily semi-protected? Should I have indicated the reason for the request was vandalism instead of removal of reliably sourced information? I have never tried to protect a page before. It's kind of discouraging if the only option is to just keep reverting the deletion of actually factual and relevant content. Thanks in advance for any insight. @Wikieditor6557: the Wikimedia foundation (and Wikipedia) do not archive references. This is done by the Internet Archive, which is an entirely separate organization. The internet archive has a system called the "wayback machine" that crawls the web and captures snapshots of web pages that do not disallow it. You can explicitly request it to archive a particular page, and it will do so if allowed. The point of all this is that pages disappear on the web for various reasons. You might choose to request archiving for a page if you are concerned that the page will not remain in a stable location on the web. -Arch dude (talk) 05:59, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

I was unaware until I read it just now that we have a bot that asks the Wayback Machine to archive all new references in articles. However, we do not appear to have a bot to automatically add the archive URL to our references. (Edit conflict) @Wikieditor6557: The reason is that specific urls simply disappear from time to time, often when web server administrators reconfigure their web pages. This results in WP:LINKROT, and typically a 404 error, Page Not Found. Editors and bots can place {{Dead link}} by the ref as a warning. Sometimes the page has simply been given a new url, and a search within a website may find it. More often stuff just gets deleted or there is no search facility. The Wayback Machine, part of the internet archive.org may well have saved the page in the past, and Wikipedia's {{cite}} or {{citation}} templates allow the archived page to be referenced, and also refer to the dead one. The Wayback Machine[8] allows you to save individual live pages immediately, see Save Pages in the Wayback Machine. When searching for archived pages, only the blue dots work, the green and orange ones are no use.

The main two parameters to use within eg {{cite web}} are: |archive-url= and |archive-date=, along with the standard |url= and |access-date=. The optional |url-status=live or =dead determines whether to display either the current or the archive url as the first link in the ref. I get the feeling that either Good articles or Featured articles, or both, require all urls to be archived.

Hello, Dr Salvus. There isn't a whole lot of difference, except that stale drafts are deleted after six months. So, if you are a good faith editor who works slowly, your personal sandbox space is best. The only other consideration I can think of, Dr Salvus, is that using the draft space might be easier for a collaborative effort, if you can identify other editors who might wish to chip in at the early stage of article creation. We have articles about all countries but around 60 countries don't have a portal, e.g. Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Mongolia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Sudan, Yemen. Portals are not meant to be exhaustive. They require volunteer editors to create and maintain them. This is often done by editors from the country but we have few Ethiopean editors. Columns

Hi all, previously it used to be possible to arrange long lists of things into columns, using templates such as {{columns-list|colwidth=20em}}, {{reflist|20em}}, {{refbegin|20em}} etc. I distinctly remember once sorting List of people from Gloucestershire into 4 columns, although it wasn't popular. Now it seems that none of these tricks work, and everything has been forced into a single column. I find that scrolling through 100 refs and 50 sources at the end of an article is particularly tedious. Could anyone please explain what might have happened? I use ancient Firefox 47 on XP. @MinorProphet: The problem is almost certainly the age of your browser; see mw:Compatibility#Browsers. Using Firefox 85.0 on Windows 10, the list at List of people from Gloucestershire reformats itself into one, two or more columns dependent on the width of the window, as do the many references in long articles such as Bill Gates. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:43, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

@MinorProphet: (edit conflict) It depends on the available screen width. List of people from Gloucestershire uses a width of 30em per column. 30em are about 456px on my device, which means that two columns fit into my viewport. Because the number of columns is calculated on the client side depending on the available screen size, I can't give you a definitive way of how to create 4 columns. That being said, Firefox 47 is realy ancient and very likely has known vulnerabilities, the same goes for Windows XP, for which the last regular update was released in 2008 (!). Until relatively recently (a few months ago) I could do a Ctrl+Scroll which produced the desired multi-column effect, but now it doesn't. One day I might upgrade from XP, I am one of the 1% of all PC users that have it. I was in IT for 20 years, but after a stroke 10 years ago anything to do with PCs except using them fills me with dread. Anyway, I have had an intense dislike for all versions of Windows since Vista. I used to be familiar with Linux, maybe I might try installing that, since you can install FF on it. Hmm, now where did I put that spare hard drive...? Hidden text goes wrong

In 2021 New York City mayoral election, there are "results" tables with space for the results of the primary elections, but those elections are several months away, so I tried to comment them out so they would not display at this time, using the <!-- ... --> notation (see Help:Wikitext#Invisible text (comments)). We will need those tables or something similar when the primary occurs, but not before then. However, it didn't work properly (see [9]). Does anyone know what went wrong? I see that there are other uses of <!-- ... --> within the table itself; are embedded uses not allowed? --Metropolitan90 (talk) 16:38, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Categorisation question

A further question about Vyborg railway station (1913). Does it belong in Category:Former buildings and structures in Finland or in Category:Former buildings and structures in Russia?

The background for this is:

• The station was built in 1913, when Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland, not yet independent.
• The station was part of independent Finland for 24 years from 1917 to 1941.
• The station was destroyed in 1941 by Soviet troops. It doesn't exist any more. At that time it was still in independent Finland.
• Vyborg itself was ceded to the Soviet Union as part of their demands after the Continuation War had ended.
• Vyborg remains in Russia to this day. Russia has never had any intention of returning it.

• Physical references such as books and newspapers don't expire. Online references might, as websites can be taken down. That's why there is the Internet Archive which preserves copies of expired websites. JIP | Talk 17:48, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Marked a small content edit as minor. Can the "minor" tag be removed?

I opened an account to make an edit to a page to add a quantity that was missing. It seemed minor to me, so I marked it as such. Afterwards, I read the definition of Minor Edit on the wiki and find that since I added content, it was not minor. When I look at the "History" page, I don't see a way to alter my edit comments. Recently created page not shown in Google search

I realize that Google is separate from Wikipedia, but this is a query about how they interface. The BLP page Yaniv Iczkovits was created as a draft on 11 January and moved to article mainspace on 26 January. Its Wikidata item was created in March 2013, and there's an earlier article in the Hebrew Wikipedia. Searching the name in Google in Hebrew displays the Hebrew Wikipedia link, but still nothing appears in Google when searching the name in English. @Deborahjay: Patience ;-) All new mainspace pages, no matter if they went through AfC, are noindexed until they either 1) they are marked as patrolled by the Wikipedia:New pages patrol folks or 2) they have been in mainspace for 90 days (whichever comes first). And even when Googlebot finally is allowed to index the page, it still takes him some time (up to a few hours) to notice that he is now allowed to do so. Why does wikipedia support having an encyclopedia use definitions that do not align with their past articles?

React (web framework) is by definition not a web framework. There are also under Framework: Software framework, a reusable set of libraries or classes for a software system or subsystem Web framework, for development of dynamic websites, web applications, and web services

List of JavaScript libraries would also suggest that React should be listed under "DOM (manipulation) oriented" section by the tool's use case.

There seems to be no supporting documentation to suggest that React is in fact a framework, let alone a Web framework. It could be considered a library for DOM manipulation and would fit with the "a well-defined interface by which the behavior is invoked" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_(computing) definition.

However React could not be compared to .NET Framework Spring Framework or Next.js or Sails.js ?

React on it's own can only build a single page HTML webpage; however, does not offer a framework (by wikipedia nor academia definitions) for providing development of dynamic websites, such as serving webpages or routing addresses.

It would seem harmful to continue to have React listed as a web framework, let alone a framework by wikipedia's own definitions. Does this seem to be the cases? If not, why is React a Web Framework?
