@Papa Dingo: This is a phishing attempt to get you to fill in your login credentials on a page owned by the scammer. As far as I know, there isn't any way to "deactivate" your account on Wikipedia. Emails from the Wikimedia Foundation will show a proper domain name. ~Anachronist (talk) 00:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia accounts cannot be "deactivated", It's probably a scam, maybe to get you to click "cancel" and pick up a virus or something. 331dot (talk) 00:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

I haven't heard this one before and don't know whether the goal is to take over your Wikipedia account, get you to reveal your username, try to infect you with a virus, or something else. I strongly recommend you do NOT click the link to find out what they try to do. Maybe they mail random email addresses and don't know whether you actually have a Wikipedia account. Cite news with multiple URLs

Citation #5 in SsangYong Rodius goes to [1]. (It went to [2] until a minute ago, but I used the archived URL as the original's gone rotten.) Unfortunately, some of the information to which this is cited isn't exactly on the page, but on a linked subpage. Of course I could create a separate citation for that information, but since they're intimately related (they're a single document, split apparently because they'd be too long for a single page), I'd like to link both this page and the subpage in the same citation. How do I do this in the existing {{cite news}}-based citation? I never use citation templates (much easier to construct a citation manually, especially in this kind of situation), so I'm not familiar with this template, and its documentation didn't say anything about the idea of providing multiple links. Incorrect number showing on right hand sidebar

In some cases when I search using a search engine for La Hougue Bie, I get a Wikipedia right hand sidebar with details about the site come up. But hte number for La Hougue Bie on the pull out on the right hand search is incorrect, how do I change this, because the number should be +44 (0)1534 853 823 but when I go to the Wiki page I cannot find a telephone number to edit. Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. (edit conflict) This is a problem with Google, not with Wikipedia. I've just searched for La Hougue Bie using both Google and DuckDuckGo. Only Google has the number. Where they are getting it from is known only to Google, you'll need to contact them. There is a "suggest an edit" field in the sidebar, you could give that a try. @Helengrayjerseyheritage: Some search engines have a "Feedback" or similar link at the end of such boxes. The screenshot is cut off before the end and I don't get the box myself on searches at ecosia.org so I don't know whether they have that feature. The only content which can be assumed to be taken from Wikipedia is a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia". Other sections don't mention their sources. This confusing system is used by many search engines. See Template:HD/GKG for a stock answer. Wikipedia almost never displays phone numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:14, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

No sources available/Ref query

Hello. I am trying to amend or remove information about a proposed project which did not go ahead on a page about my workplace wiki page.

The project has been mothballed, but the mods reinstated the information and requested a reference for its discontinuation. No such public reference exists as it was an internal decision on the part of the organisation. The information on the page is therefore misleading.

"president" or "President"?

Good afternoon. In this article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guido_Carli, I noticed that sometimes "president" ("of ...") is used, and sometimes "President" ("of ..."); sometimes in uppercase, sometimes in lowercase. Is there anyone who could tell me whether it's right to write the word in upper or lowercase, or to correct it himself? JackkBrown (talk) 12:58, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

To further the example, you would say "President Biden signed such and such legislation" (used as title, part of name, capitalized), but you would say "Joe Biden was the first president from Delaware" (used as generic job description, lower case). --Jayron32 13:11, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

How to properly position infobox on mobile view

I have a page that I want to add an infobox to, but it 's always positioned wrong on the mobile view (above the text instead of below). I fix it, but it then positions wrong on desktop. I've looked through the source code of other pages who have the infobox positioned correctly, but nothing stands out that's different to how I do it. I've been meaning to ask this for a while now, and it bugs me quite a bit, so please answer if you can.

@Dontuseurrealname: I personally find MOS:ORDER more helpful. It says that the Infobox (item 1.8) should go before the article content (item 2). Furthermore, part of the footnote for the Infobox reads: On the mobile site, the first paragraph of the lead section is moved above the infobox for the sake of readability, so if it doesn't, please feel free to let us know which page it is, so we can take a look. @JackkBrown: The link you provide above is to an article which starts "The president of the European Council is...", which shows correct case usage according to MOS:JOBTITLE. Feel free to confidently correct any similar usages of "President" which have an upper-case "p". I'm trying to make a series of Canadian premier timelines, similar to car make/model timelines, but my first attempt {{Canadian premiers, 1920s}} isn't coming out too well. I tried having a 100-column timeline and adjusting the colspans to be varied accordingly, but the years aren't coming out constant-width as they're supposed to. Not to mention, some cells' borders are funky. As it stands, the template looks like this:

The relative colspans, as I intended for it to look, are already in the code and can be used even if the structure needs to be modified. Question

It is a continuation of the previous question, and the one before that: public offices, if not accompanied by a name, should be written in lowercase, so far so clear; why then, in the title of this page, has the public office been written in capitals? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Poland. Because (i) in that instance, it's a job title referring to a particular office, not merely a generic description, and (ii) all article titles are supposed to start with a capital letter, and "Prime minister of Poland" would be odd.

JackkBrown, as a former professional editor andproofreader, I would be the last to deny that some of the stuff you are focussing on is technically incorrect according to the MoS, but none of it is factually misleading, or even noticeable to general readers rather than borderline-OCD detail obsessives like me, and there are more important factual and other deficiencies in many (if not most) of our articles. Change in Wikipedia Page Title

Regarding the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre (ANZ Viaduct Events Centre), the name of the building has since changed to the Viaduct Events Centre. How can the title be edited to suit the information as it changes. The body text and the information surrounding the images and location can be edited, however, the title was unable to be edited. Thank you. I've just deleted it. Is the subject notable, or was its treatment merely promotional? Well, who cares? It didn't have the aroma of an authentic Wikipedia article. I therefore copied a distinctive string of words from it, and fed this to Google, which immediately found it both in the Wikipedia article and in this page. I added "copyright violation" to a list of crimes noted by another user, and got rid of it. When you come across something like this, first look to see if it's a copyright violation: if it is, then there's no arguing over its value. -- Hoary (talk) 07:05, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

I note, Tshisusu, that the question immediately above is the sole edit by this username to English-language Wikipedia so far, and that the wording of your question suggests unfamiliarity with the Wikipedia of any language. So, the first step is to find some Wikipedia articles that are defective in some way -- an easy task, as defective articles are very numerous -- and, by scrupulously using and citing reliable sources, to improve those articles. Linking Books in References?

If a book listed in a reference has a Wikipedia article about it (in this case No Man Knows My History), should the occurance in the reference be linked? Assume the book is not mentioned in the article other than in the reference.Naraht (talk) 13:49, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Uploading a new version of a picture file

I'm trying to update the picture "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Logo_for_SC_United_Bantams_(PDL_franchise).jpg#file". The club uses a different logo now. I've uploaded the new file and updated the source URL, but it still shows the old picture on the page and the page that references the file. I've tried googling how to fix this, looked through the help desk archives, and the Wikipedia tutorials and haven't found anything that helps. Can someone please help me with this? Ppv0323 From your username, I gather that you are associated with this website. Please read conflict of interest and paid editing(which includes employment) for important information. We have articles here, not pages. You should not be directly attempting to create an article(which new accounts can't do anyway), but you may submit a draft article via Articles for Creation.

Ppv0323 I would click publish, then when you are prevented from the edit, remove a piece of your draft and try again, until you get an edit through, then you can narrow down the problem. (edit conflict) @331dot: That message is MediaWiki:Abusefilter-disallowed and the standard message when an edit fitler is set to disallow. I cannot see what specificially caused the abuse filter that disallowed to activate, since the responsible filter is private, however, the edit itself can still be seen in the public log from a different, also activated filter. @Ppv0323: For future note, false positive reports of edit fitlers go to Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports. Frankly, if that is your idea of being 'neutral', then no, I doubt that you will be able to do anything to get an article approved. And given both the contents of the draft, and your username, you evidently need to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Mistakes happen. Errors are sometimes caused by inappropriate changes of valid code which is no longer there so I often look for the origin instead of merely fixing the current code. "Find addition/removal" in the page history finds [5] by R Prazeres. The whole caption was added in that edit and it was just a mistake with nothing more revealed. Asking for review of the Translated page of an existing Wiki page

I have been trying to translate in English the Marcelle Pardé page which was originally created in French (I am one of the primary contributors to that specific page). The system did not allow me to publish my translation because of my Wiki status and I could only save that draft under my personal Wiki account. How do I submit it for review so it can be published and tweaked using Wiki source code? I could not see that "ask for review" option nor could I see how to togle the translation page from text to Wiki code (in insert footnotes for example). New Ownership of Business

It would not be a good idea to have two separate articles for the same establishment. One course of action would be to WP:Move the article to the new name (you can't edit page names in the same way as other text), leaving a WP:Redirect under the old name (because many people will search for that): if done properly, this will preserve the history of the original article, which is required.

I see the logo is uploaded to en.Wikipedia directly under the Non-free use rationale – you can upload the new logo in the same way and replace the old one with the new.

@Sandeekim: If you are associated with the business (and I assume you are due to your use of the pronoun "we"), then you should refrain from making edits to the article yourself. Propose them on the talk page instead. You can upload a new logo and add it, change spelling, and other minor things, but if you want anything more substantive than that, you should propose it on the talk page. JackkBrown, probably the best way to find out what somebody meant when they wrote something is to identify the edit in which that "something" was added, identify the editor, and ask the editor on the editor's talk page. Another approach is to say that it doesn't matter what another editor meant: you have as much right as that other editor to decide what the paragraph says. If you think it isn't clear, reword it. @JackkBrown: Looking at the article in question, Astana#Sport, the caption is for a photograph of the Astana Arena. "Astana Arena" will suffice on its own, because it describes what the picture is. It is my preferred caption for this picture as any subsidiary information, such as its opening date, should be in the article text. It might have the date the picture was taken added, as has been done for the "Barys Arena in 2015" picture below it.

Adding an extra snippet of information, as in "Astana Arena, opened in 2009", is fine with a comma: the additional text simply describes a property of the subject, although it would be better in the article text as stated above.

I'd consider "Astana Arena opened in 2009.", without a comma but with a full-stop, to be inaccurate, because it's not a picture of the arena being opened in 2009. Bazza (talk) 09:46, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

German to English Translation

How do I translate a German article to English? I believe that you need to create an account, change your preferences to Deutsch German and then Save the article to your documents.

What you are actually asking is how to create an article in English Wikipedia whose content happens to be based on an article in another Wikipedia. This is not much different from creating any other article in English Wikipedia, and you are responsible for making sure your work meets all the criteria for references, notability etc (the original article may meet these, or it may not, as standards are not the same in different Wikipedias. I believe that German Wikipedia has quite high standards though, so it may do). You must also (according to the terms of the licence) attribute where the material has come from. Ah, from my guess, it looks like the school probably requested a website from Pearson, who in turn used Wix.com to create the website.
