Revision as of 12:06, 18 July 2024

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Shooting ranges in Norway (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This list article comprehensively fails WP:LISTCRITERIA on the basis the article is a list of inter-wiki links to Norwegian Wikipedia.

Looking at the linked articles on NO:WP, they seem to just consist of a table of shooting ranges with name, municipality and the lat/long (which links to GeoHack).

So what we have is a list of links to pages on another wiki, which would themselves fail WP:NOTDIRECTORY here.

This is fine on no.wp if it meets their GNG. On en.wp it does not.

There's no encyclopaedic content there worth importing to en.wp which would help this page meet WP:GNG. I don't see how this page meets (or could ever meet) notability unless it could be rewritten to cover some unique or special feature of Norwegian shooting ranges that marks them out from ranges anywhere else in the world (if such a feature exists, which it probably doesn't).

I don't think any argument can be made that the no.wp links are just placeholding until equivalent articles can be created on en.wp because I can't see how a page like this would past LISTCRITERIA on en.wp. It's interesting and useful information... but for some sort of geo project. It's not encyclopaedic content. Hemmers (talk) 08:57, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result was keep‎. I see a consensus here to Keep this article and no support for Deletion other than the nominator. The article needs work but that can be addressed through editing.

There is also a strong disagreement from participants here that WP:NEWSORGINDIA applies to countries other than India. Please do not use it as a justification for deletion in future nominations. Liz Read! Talk! 01:06, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PTV Sports (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

References do not show how this is notable. Plenty of unreliable sources and NEWSORGINDIA but nothing in-depth. Recommend a redirect to parent Pakistan Television Corporation. While I did not do so prior to the AfD, programming also needs to be removed per WP:NOTTVGUIDE. It appears that the notability of the page is attempted to be heightened by the mentions of the programs it shows. CNMall41 (talk) 23:32, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When searching for references, make sure to weed out those that apply to PTV Sports (TV program) as well. --CNMall41 (talk) 17:31, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PTV Sports (TV program) is a Filipino TV program, so obviously editors searching in Pakistani sources won't encounter such references. 2A00:F29:248:C1E5:69B9:937C:A897:D420 (talk) 16:36, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep I have added more RS.--Ameen Akbar (talk) 21:28, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

These "reliable sources" seem to fall under WP:NEWSORGINDIA. Can you point out the specific ones that show notability?--CNMall41 (talk) 05:12, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are many news articles show controversy or negitivity about channel. So, WP:NEWSORGINDIA may not apply here. This may apply when all are praising. Ameen Akbar (talk) 12:34, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is not how that works. NEWSORGINDIA has to do with the context of the article (who wrote it, is it churnalism, etc.), not whether it is positive or negative. --CNMall41 (talk) 07:18, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Liz Read! Talk! 22:59, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep NEWSORGINDIA cannot possibly apply to this article (and I'm surprised the nom hasn't received blowback for even mentioning that country's name in this nom for a Pakistani subject and network); it has enough sources within to easily pass WP:N and is by default Pakistan's main sports channel. Cull back the programming list to only cricket and soccer as a simple list and source it; that's the only true issue with this article. Nate (chatter) 00:46, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your comment is a little uncivil but I understand your concern as it has been raised several times in the past. NEWSORGINDIA has been applied to the entire subcontinent in both articles and AfD discussions. --CNMall41 (talk) 00:58, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Nate. The RfC consensus ([3]) was just about Indian mainstream media, and there was no discussion that we can apply this to whole Indian subcontinent countries (i.e., Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). As far as I can see, only CNMall41 is trying to extend that consensus to whole South Asia as if they are part of India or these countries are in some sort of union like EU, which is not the case. I'd recommend seeking a similar consensus about Pakistani sources with evidence on WP:RSN first and then adding similar wording as a note for our reference. This is how this should work. 94.201.21.216 (talk) 16:29, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, you seem not to be familiar with the discussions. In fact, it was suggested to change the name as having "India" in the NEWSORGINDIA heading makes it seem like it is singling out a specific country and/or nationality which I don't think is proper. You are more than welcome to start a discussion but as stated, this has been applied in many AfD discussions. --CNMall41 (talk) 16:38, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This should be done if only to resolve the dispute. I read the sections in question and found no mention of countries other than India. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 22:44, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Twinkle1990: - can I just point out NSPORT states that "Failing to meet the criteria in this guideline means that notability will need to be established in other ways (for example, the general notability guideline...) - so all NSPORT is saying that people who meet those criteria are considered notable, but not meeting those criteria doesn't automatically make them non-notable. (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

It would appear to me this is a neologism. The article lacks references, and with the required WP:BEFORE done, that would seem to be because it is a new term that is without attestation in reliable sources. A move to a notional Draft:Texas challenge flag considered, but I doubt in would, at least in the near future - let's say by 2025 - be accepted. As always, please do prove me wrong. Shirt58 (talk) 🦘 08:32, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the title is bad but the incidents are verifiable and the reliable sources are connecting those incidents as being related (to the idea that since the game has to stop if objects are thrown on the field, fans are doing such throwing because they disagree with officials/referees' calls). • Delete. There are no reliable sources provided that refer to this topic. The only sources I find that refer to this are eith not reliable or not independent. E.g. this. Delete per WP:NOTNEO, WP:GNG, and bordering on WP:HOAX. Cbl62 (talk) 15:06, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. The fan/flag situation at the game was somewhat notable, but no cited sources use this WP:NEO article title. Could add mentions to 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season instead... or try to establish notability of the Texas vs. Georgia game itself for its own article. I would support creation of an article like Interference (baseball) for gridiron football where notable instances like this can be listed. Perhaps should list it at List of violent spectator incidents in sports... "Incidents of object or snow throwing are included when it ... causes significant delays or cancellation of the event." PK-WIKI (talk) 17:45, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Definitely delete under that title, as there are no reliable sources using the phrase "Texas challenge flag". Also, that title assumes that these incidents acted as a challenge flag, despite the evidence that it had no effect on officiating. I very much doubt that this content is salvageable under any title because it's not clear that the three incidents are more than superficially related, and it's even less clear that the throwing of debris had any effect beyond a fine for the home team (in at least one case). Pichpich (talk) 20:04, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because there is a disconnect between fans' understanding of the rules, and the actual rules. That's the whole reason there was no actual effect. But what the cited articles are referring to is the fact that some fans think that they can achieve a reversed call this way, which is why they have tried to do it. (u t c m l ) 🔒 ALL IN 🧿 00:10, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Throwing debris on the field/pitch/ice/court when the crowd doesn't like a call is a time-honored tradition and existed way before video review. It's a dumb way to express one's frustration but I'm sure the vast majority of those throwing debris are not dumb enough to think it will influence the refs and help their team. Pichpich (talk) 17:15, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete; I don't even know where to start with this: WP:NOTNEWS, WP:RECENTISM, and moreso WP:Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. Probably some WP:OR mixed in also, but it's not worth spending more time than necessary examining that. There's only two sources that have a chance of counting towards WP:GNG, but they don't mention this term let alone directly discuss the topic with in-depth secondary coverage. The conference website is not an independent reference for those incidents, and their official statements are primary sources. Left guide (talk) 05:26, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Similar situation to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Major League Baseball career double plays as a right fielder leaders, which resulted in the lists by position being trimmed and merged to List of Major League Baseball career double plays leaders. The top 100 players at each position, split into their own articles, and then a list of other hall of famers at their positions and relevant stats, is more narrow a scope than is appropriate. All of these are basically copies of leader tables (link) from Baseball Reference. The top 100 players at each position, in their own lists, is excessive, and Wikipedia is not a database. • Keep I accept that sourcing in the article is deficient. It’s not something that I can do much about as I know Simon and Jonathan well. There would not be a serious mountain biker in New Zealand who would not know of them as they are legends. As such, this article isn’t just about the company, but the three brothers themselves. Given that they have been inducted into the MTB Hall of Fame, that in itself is a strong indicator of notability.Simon would probably meet GNG due to his international racing career, but that was prior to the internet age. As a company, they manage to reprint their MTB guide once every three years and I have read an article that no other NZ publisher apart from Edmonds manages to keep a book in circulation over many years. I’d be happy to go hunting for sources if someone else is prepared to put that into the article. Schwede66 18:05, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - This does not necessarily need to meet WP:NCORP if it can be shown to meet notability guidelines for biographies (see Wright brothers). I am having issues finding references that talk about them as a group (reliable, secondary, and in detail). Paul, you have already gotten your "hands on" based on the edit history (lol). That aside, you would obviously know more about the available reliable sources than editors here so if you can post them on the talk page or here on the discussion page I would be happy to have a look. If there are sources that show notability as a group (or a page for you or another as a standalone) I would be happy to do the cleanup on the page per WP:HEY. Again, it does not need to meet NCORP standards but the sources would need to be in-depth about you and the others as a group. Cheers! --CNMall41 (talk) 20:35, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep these three appear to easily pass notability just on the sources I have found with some quick searching. They seem to be particualrly notable in the world of competitive and recreational cycling in NZ. I've added a pile of references talking about them and their publications. I think each of them is possibly not notable enough for an article individually, but when combining their accomplishments and coverage they reach notability. I would recommend renaming the article to Kennett brothers as they are frequently referred to as such in media coverage, and we should then lean into this becoming more of a biographical article than a business article. The article definitely needs work but they are certainly notable enough to have one and it should not be deleted. David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 00:31, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some unsubstantiated reports about big-club scouting; I could not find a single piece of evidence for that. No refs on the page for a long time. It's tough to read sources from Iran but this one is quite spicy - it is about an official complaint that the stadium has never been finished. I can't tell if it has ever actually been used for sport, however the news clips as far as I can tell looking at translated pages appear to be regurgitated from official sources (announcing the opening and this one about complaints). • Weak Keep. I can't read Das osmnezz's ProQuest link, but the first one is sigcov (as pointed out above), and, by looking through ProQuest myself, I located this which is arguably sigcov as well. Copied from the source: ANY PLANS Tim Myers and his soccer-mad mates might have had for these school holidays went on hold early last month. Against the odds, the Myers-led Soccer 2 team beat Australian champions FC Melbourne 2-1 on an outer field at North Harbour Stadium, and with it won the chance to lace their boots at the Manchester United Premier Cup tournament in Hong Kong. The under-15 team ... leaves tomorrow on the trip of their lives. As captain, Myers has the honour of leading the team, who include two of his Auckland Grammar schoolmates, into the unknown ... Since being selected for Soccer 2 this year when he was juggling cricket and soccer, Myers has been aware of the big prize, but admits he and his team-mates did not carry any great expectations into the game against Melbourne. When Soccer 2 fell a goal behind after 20 minutes to an Australian team so confident of success that they did not turn up until the day before the game, he was not too surprised, but said he and the rest did not give up ... Myers, a defender who first kicked a ball as a five-year-old at the Eastern Suburbs club where he continues to play, is under no illusions as he prepares for the 10-day trip, which will include, realistically, four pool games, but not much else... Keep I think the two NZ Herald articles clearly exceeds the notability requirements for WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG.
FYI anyone can access Proquest content via the Wikipedia Library if you have enough edits to your name. An inaccessible source is still a source. However the proquest links above appear to just be the NZ Herald sources already in the article.
He is also mentioned here[1][2] as replacing another injured player in a world cup qualifying game, with the coach saying, "Tim is another promising young player from the ASB Premiership. Further to the above, see here where the creator says that they have contacted the Maltese FA directly for the information but won't be able to provide a source, so basically original research. This article fails V and NOR, 2 of the 3 main policies of Wikipedia. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Changing to keep. It's not original research, it's not unverifiable, and it's part of an article structure which should be able to have an article on it if it passes GNG. There are definitely articles on the tournament, including this modern one. Unfortunately some of the information in the newspaper article doesn't match what is in our article, and I trust the newspaper more. I'm sure there would be additional sources if we were able to do a newspaper search of Malta for 1940 papers. SportingFlyer T·C 03:12, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've also fixed the scoreline in the final, added scorers, and added two sources to the article. It could use further improvement, but I don't know how to look at Maltese papers. It's almost certainly notable if that 2007 article can get into that level of detail, though. SportingFlyer T·C 03:17, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I remain of the view that a redirect is the most suitable outcome. GiantSnowman 08:39, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - I'm finding a lot of references to that season's competition, particularly in the BNA archive, which I don't have access to. There's less in Newspapers.com because of it's limited UK collection - but I've added 8 references to the article and expanded, from 8 different publications. Can User:GiantSnowman review these? There seems to be plenty of further references available to fully document the season, some surprisingly detailed! Nfitz (talk) 21:58, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
None of them look like anything other than results or routine news. GiantSnowman 09:41, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't link any results. These were all text - admittedly one was very brief. Routine refers to sports scores. And this is more than that. Also, someone needs to look at the BNA search results. Most importantly - from your edit history, you spent no more than 30 seconds reviewing 8 references. Your original vote was equally as fast. I really think that not much weight should be given to this redirect opinion. Nfitz (talk) 19:16, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I got temporary BNA access, so in recognition that many of the references are local, I added 5 more references from other parts of England. Also, I added a second reference from the The Staffordshire Sentinel that is surprisingly detailed, giving a background of the competition before the final match was to be played. So that should sort any remaining GNG concerns. Nfitz (talk) 00:55, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep per improvements to the article, I'd probably like to see a little more depth, but it's much better, thank you Nfitz. Govvy (talk) 09:51, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete yes there have been improvements to the sourcing, but I do not see evidence of WP:SUSTAINED coverage. All of the BNA articles listed are from the time of the matches, when of course there will be some coverage. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:54, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment @Joseph2302: Is a topic talked about overtime? Well, the clubs that played in this have the ability to mention it in their match day programmes when they play each other again. That does constitute what you call primary sourcing. However, this in essence is really a historical record on the competition. Having on wikipedia can also give the ability for people to find it and out source it. However, What do you want wikipedia to do? There are policies upon policies on wikipedia, but if you don't want to keep a historic record on wikipedia, then whats wikipedia for? An encyclopaedic archive of historical events and information? This is one of those things, sigcov, sustained are policies, guidelines to adhere, sometimes we do need to look beyond that. But hey, that's my ... two cents. Regards. • Keep this is a fantastically easy keep on GNG grounds just by looking at the sources cited by the article. It's also been significantly WP:HEYed by Nfitz since it was first nominated. I've never seen SUSTAINED invoked for individual seasons before, otherwise we'd lose a lot of the encyclopaedia. SportingFlyer T·C 03:20, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:GNG, cannot find any significant coverage anywhere with the exception of database websites. Also, the club existed only for 4 years. Snowflake91 (talk) 17:55, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And? Provide that "significant coverage" that covers HK Alfa then, and as you have been told at some other AfDs, playing in a league does NOT guarantee notability anymore since the notability system was overhauled in 2022, they simply need to pass WP:GNG regardless of which league they play in. If the league receives "significant coverage", it would only make the league notable, and not all of its clubs, especially not some random amateur clubs that only existed for 4 seasons. And there is no second division anyway, so "top-level" doesn't mean much, they didn't need to climb to this division, Slovenian ice hockey only has like 6 teams, of which only 2-3 are professional while other are "hobby clubs", including Alfa. Not independently sourced. A WP:BEFORE search failed. I unilaterally moved this to draftspace once already. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 05:44, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Guys, these are tiny pieces - snippets - of coverage in local foreign language print media. If they're more than listings or passing mentions, it certainly doesn't seem so. I think this is really reaching - is the film truly notable by WP English standards? Internationally notable? From this, I'm still calling it 'no'... Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 15:54, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexandermcnabb: I beg to differ with your source assessment. 1. Non-English sources are allowed on WP and contribute to notability in the same way as English sources. Please see WP:NONENG. 2. All the sources I added, except for source 14, are full-length articles entirely covering the film. I have actually come across at least 5 other articles with less significant coverage while searching for sources, and I have already screened them out. I am pretty sure that if I were truly adding sources with merely passing mentions, at least double that number could be included. With 8 strong sources that provide SIGCOV, GNG is undoubtedly fulfilled. —Prince of EreborThe Book of Mazarbul 16:13, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, absolutely on WP:NONENG - but I can only see very, very short print snippets in Chinese/Mandarin being brought up here. Perhaps someone might like to step up to: "If you quote a non-English reliable source (whether in the main text or in a footnote), a translation into English should accompany the quote."... Because absent that, these sources are a) very short and b) being in print and not English, effectively non-verifiable - WP:PROOF Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 16:25, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Err... Alexandermcnabb, the two reasons you listed are contradictory. As I mentioned, 8 of the 9 sources I cited are full-length articles, averaging hundreds of words each. It is exceedingly demanding for me to translate all of them. If you expect long, detailed articles with SIGCOV on the subject, then anticipating a full-length translation of hundreds or thousands of words in the footnote is unrealistic. Also, I have linked all of the articles, and they are digitally accessible, so being in print is not a concern. —Prince of EreborThe Book of Mazarbul 16:40, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: The sources that have been added have translated titles, and they seem entirely appropriate as references. For example, "After Eleven Years in Film and Twenty-Seven Films, the Early Departed Alexander Fu Sheng’s Directorial Debut Wits of the Brats was also His Unfinished Final Work" is obviously the start of a full article, not a brief mention. Alexandermcnabb's argument that "being in print and not English" means that the sources are "effectively non-verifiable" is a clear violation of WP:NONENG. It may be "effectively non-verifiable" to you at a glance, but there are people in the world who can read Chinese/Mandarin. Toughpigs (talk) 18:04, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Huh. There was a very strong, promising start but I can't really find anything else. I get the feeling that there's probably more out there, just tucked away in various archives and not indexed in any substantial way on the internet. At the same time, I don't really have a ton of proof to back that up, other than the NYT source and a handful of other things, much of which are put out by organizations associated with Cunningham.
So unless someone can provide sourcing, I'm leaning towards a delete. I don't want to make an official judgement call on my end because I'm admittedly hoping someone will find something. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 14:24, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is a tennis player who has never won a WTA Tour level title or even got close, never reached a Grand Slam tournament main draw and the few citations on the page are merely bog standard stat profiles.
