Rapid Transit in India consists of Metros, one Metro-like elevated Urban Rail system and Monorails. The first modern rapid transit in India was the Kolkata Metro Railway, with operations starting in 1984. Chennai MRTS acts as second urban mass transit system since 1997 and differs from country's other MRTS suburban systems. The Delhi Metro in the capital city of New Delhi is India's third operational rapid transit and second conventional metro beginning operations in 2002. Currently, rapid transit systems have been deployed in these cities and more are under construction or in planning in several major cities of India.

Monorail
Monorails in India are generally considered as feeder systems for the Metro. The Mumbai Monorail will be the first monorail in India[3] (excluding the Skybus Metro Test Track in Goa) since the Patiala State Monorail Trainways closed in 1927. The first portion of the first line is scheduled to be operational by December 2010.[4] Many other Indian cities have Monorail projects, as a feeder system to the Metro, in different phases of planning.
