Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Edit source for own talk page.

Hey all, after I had move-archived my talk page and then restored the original one from the redirect, I couldn't seem to be able to edit the source for each section individually. I could still do it to other talk pages though. Is there a cleanup job I missed after I changed the redirect back? (My first talk archive was a copy paste move). Thanks in advance,TheQ Editor (Talk) 01:51, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the {{talk archive}} banner from the top, and that has fixed it. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:46, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    adding photo to Sebastien Stella

I'm trying to add a photo to the page Sebastien Stella and have tried to follow instructions to add to infobox without success. I did successfully upload the photo to Wiki Common, category photos, name of photo Sebastien Stella, name of file equerre.jpg. If you could tell me exactly how to do this, or do it yourself, I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks. Lloyd Sachs

    IP blocking question

I would like to know if it is possible for my account to be excempted from IP blocks anywhere, as I sometimes try to edit but a previous user may have disrupted Wikipedia and blocked the IP. This makes it frustrating for me to edit so is it possible for my account to be excempted? Warrenkychu (talk) 07:43, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is possible. See Wikipedia:IP block exemption, and especially the "How to request" section. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:05, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    CREATING NEW WIKI PAGE

I am creating a new wiki page but I am struggling to understand how citations work…

I am nearly ready to submit a draft of the page for review but I am wondering if I need to cite things before or after this?

Frank — Preceding unsigned comment added by FRANK RIGBY 7744 (talkcontribs) 09:32, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See Referencing for beginners and definitely cite before you submit it for review - otherwise it will simply be declined for not having any references - a waste of your and reviewers time. You should only submit for review when you believe your draft is as complete as you can make it. That will reduce the number of times it would need go through the review cycle which can take more than a month each time! BTW, please do not write in all-caps, section headings use sentence case. Can someone help to turn this into neat little side-box? Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:55, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean a vertical image stack, per {{imagestack}} or incorporating them into an infobox?--ukexpat (talk) 15:37, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
{{Imagestack}} is making it neither little nor neat. Very cumbersome. Is there any other solution? Incorporated in an infobox sounds good. Aditya(talkcontribs) 18:41, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As it appears above, the final a of Nymphaea has become detached from the rest of the word. This should be fixed somehow. Maproom (talk) 20:56, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please help with viewing Wikipedia on my Laptop

    Hi,

I have been enjoying Wikipedia very much for many years and have never had any trouble until now. I am asking for your help from my PC because Wikipedia now appears on my laptop with a typesize so miniature that I cannot read it, even with a magnifying glass! The whole page appears, just with teeny tiny type.

I mush have inadvertently hit a button or feature that I didn't know existed when I last used in on my laptop. Please let me know how to return it to its normal size. Everything else on my laptop is fine, so I think I must just have mistakenly clicked something on the Wikipedia page.

I sure hope you can help me! With my thanks in advance,

Jennifer— Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.207.129.155 (talkcontribs)

    Control+0 should reset the zoom back to normal.--ukexpat (talk) 15:40, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
FYI - rather than hitting a button, the common way to have done this is to have accidentally pressed control when you are scrolling down. Once you are used to it, control and scroll is a useful quick way to enlarge small text or images. - Arjayay (talk) 17:52, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ukexpat and Arjayay: You are lifesavers! I'm now up and running with Wikipedia on my laptop. Many, many thanks! Jennifer — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.207.129.155 (talk) 00:04, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Origin of content

Let's say I wonder about a specific piece of content in an article. Is there an easy way (tool) to find out which authors touched that portion of text or even originally introduced it to the article? Of course I can manually click trough history. --Aeroid (talk) 15:44, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, click on "View History" then "Revision History Search" Should be self-explanatory, let me know if you still have questions.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:02, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Good to have it on the EN site, but the tool also works for DE, it's just not linked from the View History tab.--Aeroid (talk) 16:33, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake in the Seth Read (or Seth Reed) Wiki

It is not "the system" that is stopping you. You are being reverted by another editor. See the article history log for the reasons for this. Clicking on "history" in the link above or at the top of the article page. You should stop trying to make the edit and instead discuss the issues on the article talk page. If you click on the image, you will be taken to the image information page where you will see license under which the image's copyright owner has released the image, particularly whether attribution is required.--ukexpat (talk) 20:42, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, nowadays one is taken to the new image viewer when one clicks on an image. A further click on "view licence information" is required to get to the information page. Logged in users can alternatively click on the Commons or Wikipedia icon at bottom right. SpinningSpark 23:35, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Umulokpa is the Headquarters of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria

The Headquarters of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State of Nigeria is Umulokpa. Not Umulona or Umuluokpa as wikipeadia has at the moment. Please, correct the spelling. I will be happy to provide wikipaedia with more information on this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.160.118.162 (talk) 20:44, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The spellings in the Uzo Uwani article are supported by this official-looking page, which indeed may well be their source. But if you can provide reliable sources for the Umulokpa spelling, we can change the article. Maproom (talk) 21:15, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I find that Google Earth (which I do not regard as a reliable source) uses the spelling "Umulona". Maproom (talk) 22:22, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Applying Orphan Tag on Review

I was reviewing an article with a list of legendary people, and found that it had a link that was wrong, Bile, so to correct it I created an article Bile (Irish legend). I then fixed the link in the parent article. The article was then reviewed and was tagged as an orphan. It wasn't, because the link in the parent article had been provided. Is there a tool that reviewers use to determine that an article is an orphan? If so, could there have been a caching problem? To assume good faith, I am ready to assume that a tool was reporting the article as an orphan, rather than that the reviewer was guessing. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:19, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is a tool, and it has showed articles as orphans before when they weren't. - Purplewowies (talk) 23:30, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Kenny Hyslop (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Someone created a page for me which is innacurate the page is Kenny Hyslop born 1951 Helensburgh Scotland ...I would like my information deleted . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.205.240.9 (talk) 23:40, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We base Wikipedia article content on what has been previously published in reliable sources. There are lots of sources that verify a 1951 date, so that has been fixed and sourced.
With regards to the existence of the article at all, we dont have pages deleted just because someone asks (or demands); however, the subject must meet some basic requirements, such as being the subject of non trivial coverage. Most of the coverage I have found in a quick search does seem to be simply trivial coverage. However, under some special qualifications under entertainers Hyslop might qualify for a page and even the trivial coverage would document an interesting career. If you would like to pursue the deletion of the page, the easiest way is probably to follow the process at WP:OTRS. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:53, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding image to my article

Could you please assist me in adding my downloaded photo to wikipedia to my article please (Treamelle Taylor). Football photo (treamelle_taylor.htm) thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ttaylor80 (talkcontribs) 00:20, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    WP:UPLOAD, other than a picture, you shouldn't edit an article about yourself, see WP:COI CTF83! 00:46, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
    • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40--ukexpat (talk) 12:19, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article would be Treamelle Taylor. You may post any requests for edits to the article talk page, Talk: Treamelle Taylor. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:36, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How to use image from en.wikipedia.org in a page on fr.wikipedia.org?

There is an image in en.wikipedia.org I would like to use for a page in fr.wikipedia.org, but I don't know how to specify the image when editing. Using Image:example.jpg only finds images on the fr site. Any idea how to do this? Tripleblade (talk) 08:25, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Tripleblade: Which image is it? I may be able to move it to Wikimedia Commons, allowing it to be used on every Wikimedia Foundation site. --Mdann52talk to me! 08:42, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Futuremark_Logo.jpeg should be replaced with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Futuremark_logo.png. The reason is that the fr. file is an older version of the logo that is no longer in use. The en. version is correct, as seen on http://www.futuremark.com/. (I know I could upload the new logo to the French site, but that didn't seem efficient as the same image would exist twice in Wikipedia. Better to have one file used on multiple language pages, right?) Tripleblade (talk) 08:57, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Company logos are not permitted on Commons because they are copyrighted. To use it on French Wikipedia you would have to download from .en and re-upload it to .fr. You also need to find out what the policy on .fr is concerning logos. On .en they are considered fair use if used on the company's page and accompanied by a fair use rationale on the file page for every usage individually. However, the policy on .fr may be substantially different. You need to ask there rather than here. SpinningSpark 10:56, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's a copyrighted fair-use logo. Commons does not allow that. fr:Fichier:Futuremark Logo.jpeg already has a red box warning about that. You must upload the new version to the French Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:00, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Mondragon Corporation

Hi, In the article on Distribitivism, section Influence, subsection Mondragon Corporation, there are "Citation Needed" and "Original Research?" questions. I want to remove them and add a reference, but the reference I want to add is to a DVD (in Basque, Spanish and English) produced by the Lanki research group which is part of what used to be called the Mondragon Corporation but is now called Mondragon - Humanity at Work. This DVD is about the background of Arizmendiarrieta's ideas and concludes that they did indeed come from Catholic social teaching.

So my question is: Is this source acceptable given that (a) it is a DVD and (b) the DVD was produced by a research group that is part of the Mondragon group that is the subject of this subsection?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bargedweller (talkcontribs) 09:25, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article is called Distributism. I don't know whether a DVD can be accepted as a published source. But I think that a DVD produced by a subsidiary of a company cannot be accepted as an independent source for information about that company. Maproom (talk) 09:57, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Besides the question of independence raised by Maproom, there is the question of reliability. One has to ask what kind of editorial oversight occured in something produced internally by an organisation. Non-independent sources can be used for basic facts like number of employees, they would certainly be a reliable source for that, but they are not a reliable source for any conclusions drawn and should not be used without confirmation from independent sources. On the question of whether a DVD is acceptable at all for verification, the answer is the same as for a book, only if it is accessible by other editors such as being archived in a library. If it was only ever distributed to a few select contacts of Mondragon then the answer is probably no. SpinningSpark 11:12, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

is adding a contribution to Wikipedia so complicated or is there an easy way

I looked up a word but could find no reference to it in Wikipedia and as it is in common use in my field of work thought it might be worth adding. I gave up its just to confusing .

The word was "spidge" referring to those abandoned bits and pieces of leftover metals found after someone else has completed a project. Generally bits that would be scrap if it wasn't for the fact that you know , someday you are going to need that exact bit. Can be odd nuts and bolts or bits of off cut metals, jointing etc . Commonly used in UK in large industrial process plants. Most particularly power plants — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clyf54 (talkcontribs) 12:35, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a dictionary. However, Wiktionary is; you may be able to add the word there. The URL is https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page
Apparently, Wiktionary wants references to show that a word really exists. If there are no publications that you can cite which contain the word, you may have trouble getting the editors at Wiktionary to go along with the addition. Jc3s5h (talk) 12:54, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A Google search shows that Urban Dictionary and The Online Slang Dictionary have entries for "spidge", but neither include the definition given by Clyf54. It seems to be a non-notable usage, unless offline sources can be found. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:48, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Frank Sinatra's first wife Nancy

    Dear sir, madam,

Is it possible to get a wiki page about nancy barbato, Frank Sinatra's first wife. There is no information to be found of whether she is still alive or not. No information about her at all, it's pretty unclear.

    Thanks,

There's some information about her at Personal relationships of Frank Sinatra, and she also has an entry at IMDb. Neither of these says whether she is still alive: if she is (and if IMDb is correct) she would be 97 years old. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 14:31, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally my guess is that she would not meet our notability guidelines at WP:PEOPLE to have her own article. CaptRik (talk) 14:33, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mulgrave School Article Deleted by an Editor - INCORRECTLY

    Hello,

I am the Communications Manager for Mulgrave School, an independent school in West Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. I recently edited our article to remove some information that had been added as a joke and to fix the spelling of a past head's name that had been incorrectly edited. An editor named 123chess456 undid my edits twice and then deleted the article about Mulgrave School. I would like to have the page reinstated please. Is someone there able to help?

Regards, Elizabeth — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lizacalderon (talkcontribs) 15:54, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article was actually deleted by @RHaworth: as evidenced here. It appears the article was deleted due to concerns that it was unambiguously promotional; such articles are prohibited by policy. I'm unable to view the text myself. As discussed at Wikipedia:Afd#How an AfD discussion is closed, your first, best option is to discuss your concerns directly with the closing editor at their talk page. Best of luck! I looked at the deleted text and it is quite promotional. Also, all the references were the school's own website so there would also be notability questions. It's probably better to find independent references and write a new article than try to fix the old one. RJFJR (talk) 16:50, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How can I change the title of the page "Westport Library" to "The Westport Library"?Franksaid (talk) 17:14, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you do find out how to change the article title (it's actually quite easy), it is likely that someone will change it back again, in accordance with Wikipedia policy as stated here: "Avoid definite and indefinite articles". Wikipedia's article on the London Library also has no article in its title. Maproom (talk) 17:24, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

editing the title of a page

The draft of an article I am working on for the Frick.Photoarchive account should have the title "Ann Hall" instead of "Anne Hall" (when I started my research, Anne seemed the better bet, but now I am convinced otherwise). Can an administrator help me out here, or are there some instructions I just can't seem to find. Thanks! @Frick.Photoarchive: Hi Lisa,
You can change the title of a page by moving it to a new location. Any user can move a page as long as their account is autoconfirmed (Has 10 edits and existed for four days). Your account passes that criteria, so it should be possible for you to move the page to the new desired title. You can find a quick guide on how to do so over here. I would have done it for you, but i figured you might want to give it a go yourself first. If you run into a problem moving the page just drop me a note on my talk page. (If i am not around at that time, a new section over here at the helpdesk may yield faster results). Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:37, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I removed great slabs of the article that were making all kinds of unsourced gushing sounds about her career. I did add sources to support her claims of success on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play chart, which turned out to be largely true. I also dug through the history and restored her birthdate, as it was reliably sourced and coherent with her career history (Miss America contestant in 1981 sets her birthdate between 1957 and 1964). I see that people claiming to work with her have set her birth year to 1970 and 1973 in the past. Since those would have her competing in the Miss America contest at an age between eight and eleven, they have no credibility.—Kww(talk) 04:31, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Rating WikiProject items

How do you rate WikiProject on Importance and Quality? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NickGibson3900 (talkcontribs) 07:36, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Most Wikiprojects have an "assessment department" where they set out their criteria for assessing articles. You should consult those. Most base their quality scale on Template:Grading scheme and their importance scale on Template:Importance scheme. There are a lot of variations though, here is the Wikiproject Electronics importance scale for instance. You need to check with each Wikiproject individually. help editing a page

I work in a school and seem to be blocked from editing our schools main page which is very out of date and some inaccuracies. How can I go about getting unblocked Dorothy Stringer Wholeschool1 (talk) 09:51, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The page is not blocked, and never has been. Neither are you. What is really happening is that your contributions are being reverted by other editors because they think it is vandalism (nine times out of ten on a school article it usually is vandalism from new editors). You can see clearly what has been going on from the history of the page. You should start a discussion on the article talk page, or else you can speak directly to the editors involved by clicking on the "talk" link next to their names. They are all real people, except for ClueBot which is an automated process.
In any case, it is not advisable for you to be editing the page directly. As an employee of the school you have a conflict of interest. We recommend that you suggest your changes on the article talk page. You can use the template {{request edit}} if necessary to attract the attention of another editor to service the request. Adding subject material to an article

    Good Day!

I would like to add information to several articles, but do not have enough "English knowledge" to do the article justice. Here is the Wiki I am referring to:

    Gun chronograph

My Great Grandfather, Stanley Standal actually coined the term "Chronograph" when it's being referred to ballistics. Here is his patent information from Google:

    https://www.google.com/patents/US2691415?dq=stanley+standal+inventor&hl=en&sa=X&ei=jcWRU8WhHcO48AGusYCIAQ&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAg

He also invented the first actual hand held portable motor driven chainsaw that was driven exclusively from one end and also the cutting teeth and chainsaw bar we use on chainsaws to this day. He sold his patent to the McCulloch Company which then in turn mass produced them.

    https://www.google.com/patents/US2488343?dq=stanley+standal+inventor&hl=en&sa=X&ei=jcWRU8WhHcO48AGusYCIAQ&ved=0CCgQ6AEwAA

He also invented the drive mechanism for the inboard/outboard motor along with quite a few other very important things we use to this day. If not for him, alot of these things we use today, would not be the same. Here is a Google page outlining just some of the things he invented.

    https://www.google.com/search?tbm=pts&hl=en&q=stanley+standal+inventor&safe=active&gws_rd=ssl#hl=en&q=stanley+standal+inventor&safe=active&start=0&tbm=pts

If someone could include this information into these articles and do him justice that would be awesome and much appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.131.153.246 (talk) 14:40, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Gail Dines' biographical page

    Hi there,

I'm working with Gail Dines, whose Wikipedia page seems to have become a sort of fighting ground for folks pro- and anti-porn. Gail is an anti-porn activist, so her article is bound to contain her ideas, which may inflame some people. She completely understands that Wikipedia needs to be factual and based on sources, but is upset at what has happened to her page, which affects her safety and career. Our end goal is the same as Wikipedia's: to represent her opinions and criticism neutrally, and clean up her page from the current alert messages that show, hopefully resolving issues with trolling as well.

I've had a look at the "Talk" page and I'm unclear what I'm supposed to add to help resolve these disputes. Please instruct me, and if you can actively help in any way, that would be greatly appreciated. This is quite a headache for non-Wikipedia folk. Thank you so much for your help!

I will also send an email to your listed contact email address.

Because you are asking Mizabot to archive to your old user name. Mizabot (actually Legobot has taken over from Mizabot) doesn't like archiving to a page that isn't under the root. Please provide the url of the thing you are trying to link and we can take a look. You cannot upload powerpoint files to Wikipedia as a .ppt file, but they can be converted to .pdf format which can be uploaded. More importantly, you cannot upload it because you probably do not own the copyright and don't have permission. SpinningSpark 22:45, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Team colors for Turkish Basketball League?

Hello, could anyone please get colors for players on Turkish Basketball League teams? It's a very popular league and I really feel like some team colors should be introduced to non-Euroleague TBL clubs! Temple of the Mousy (talk) 19:54, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What article are you talking about? The table at Turkish Basketball League shows the team colours, as do the individual team articles such as Anadolu Efes S.K.. SpinningSpark 22:49, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am talking about the articles for specific players that play for the Turkish Basketball League teams (that are not in Euroleague). Please check out some pages such as Valentin Pastal, where there are "blank team color" for the infobox. I would not consider any infoboxes of Anadolu Efes players, because I'm quite sure they are in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague! Thanks. Temple of the Mousy (talk) 22:58, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it's normal to put the team colours in the biographies of individual players. US players like Ronnie Brewer don't have them either and Template:Infobox basketball biography does not have a parameter for them. Players can be in more than one team over their career. The right place for team colours is in the team article. If you think there is a good reason for a change to this then you could open a discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball. SpinningSpark 23:55, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think you understand my question. The Ronnie Brewer page has infobox color for the Chicago Bulls. Some leagues such as the Philippine Basketball Association, National Basketball League, NCAA Basketball, and South Korean Basketball League have infobox color for players currently playing on their team. The Turkish Basketball League does not have these colors. Could you possibly add the colors for each TBL team into Template:Infobox basketball biography/style? Temple of the Mousy (talk) 01:12, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see what you mean. I think you should discuss this at WikiProject Infoboxes. It would be possible, the NBA biography infobox sets this with the "headerstyle" parameter, which invokes (via a style template) the Lua module Module:Basketball color. The headerstyle could be added to your infobox and the league colours added to the module, but there is a warning on the style template documentation that adding more leagues could lead to speed problems. Request removal of items in history from 2007

Hi, I've had a Wikipedia account since 2007 and recently have become interested in being more active on Wikipedia and have started contributing to articles related to subjects I am familiar with; mostly related to internet technologies, as I work as a web developer by trade. Unfortunately for me, when I look at my list of user contributions, there are some history entries under my account from when I first created it which i do not remember. I would not be surprised if I did do these, but honestly, I was very much a different person in 2007 and some parts of my past are better off forgotten. I would really hate for one of my professional colleagues to stumble across this list and see these old entries, to the extent I'm actually considering I may have to close this account and set up a new account, but I'd hate to do that because, well I'd rather just not have to do that.

I don't know if it's even possible, but I'd like to beg and plead to an administrator, in hopes that somebody can help me hide or remove these old entries associated with my account. The entries I'm referring to are pretty much everything in the year 2007.

Thank you very much David Condrey (talk) 00:15, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Contributions cannot be deleted, as they must be attributed to someone. But you can abandon your old account completely and make a fresh start by creating a new one. Read Wikipedia:Clean start. You will though have to wait for four days and make ten edits before being auto confirmed. --Fauzan✆ talk✉ mail 07:32, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If I were thinking of hiring you as a web developer, I would not be at all concerned about your interests of seven years ago. But I would be worried by the banner at the top of your user page, "This user page is best viewed at 1280x 1024 resolution". A good web developer creates pages that look good at all reasonable user settings, rather than asking the user to change his screen resolution. Maproom (talk) 07:43, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you do keep the account, rather than going for a clean start, you might want to request WP:oversight on this edit which seems to contain your phone number (possibly not or maybe it's out of date).--Otus scops (talk) 13:00, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing out this error. I have removed "Stratford" from the article. I have not added Toronto, since Wikipedia articles should only contain facts that have been reliably published elsewhere - the idea is that readers should be able to check everything for themselves. If your birth place has been published somewhere, then please post at Talk:David Marsden so that someone can update the article. Identifying someone who committed act of vandalism or causing moral anguish to another by editing a Wikipedia article

Contributors who edit Wikipedia for the purpose of harassment will generally be indefinitely blocked from editing; their edits will generally be deleted from public view.
If the contributor edited without signing into an account, then their IP address (and the time of the edit) will be visible and thus interested parties can pursue their own remedies.
If not, I'm not sure and will defer to wiser opinions... --Demiurge1000 (talk) 02:03, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • (edit conflict) Can we figure out who it is? Yeah, that is likely within reason. Is there legal action? Probably not in most cases... See WP:LEGALTHREATS. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 10:04 pm, Today (UTC−4)

Wikipedia itself / the Wikimedia Foundation will unlikely to take any legal action against most vandals- there are hundreds if not thousands of vandal attacks every day. The subject of an article may attempt to take action against a vandal, but they would likely have a very hard time proving a case in court.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:06, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, identification is possible (example). -- Hoary (talk) 05:11, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The only process we have on-wiki for identifying users is the CheckUser tool which is only available to a small number of trusted editors and is used to establish that the same editor is using multiple accounts abusively. The IP addresses and other information are not revealed on-wiki by checkusers. However, the Foundation might reveal it as a result of a court order, and the ISP or organisation owning the IP might likewise identify the individual. SpinningSpark 10:09, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just to further muddy the waters, I'll mention that although what Spinning Shark says above is correct, Checkuser is only used/necessary for registered users. An IP editor as already stated can be traced geographically using all sorts of freely available tools - two of which are at the bottom of their talk page. Although that doesn't personally identify them, it does reveal a bit about them. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:46, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is true that Checkuser is only needed for registered users, but is used for two kinds of sock-puppetry. It can be used either to see whether two registered accounts are being used by the same person, or to see whether IP addresses are being used by a registered user. In either case, the sock-puppetry could be for block evasion, or to stuff the non-ballot box on a deletion discussion, or for other reasons. The usual sanction will not be legal action, but blocks. (A blocked user who uses either named sock-puppets or IP sock-puppets is likely to be indeffed.) Robert McClenon (talk) 18:45, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, we don't respond by e-mail and Wikimedia staff generally do not take part in editing articles. The editing is all done by ordinary people on a volunteer basis. We take our information from published reliable sources. If you can point to a published work then please post it on the article talk page. Whatever "evidence" you may hold is a primary source and should not form the basis of a Wikipedia article. SpinningSpark 12:01, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just keep typing. If you just type "a" the system will realise that there is already a User:A and inform you, but by the time you get to "a merry christmas to Rudolph and all his friends" you will probably find that there is not already User:a merry christmas to Rudolph and all his friends and the system will let you have it. Being banned from a page

If you get into a discussion with another editor, resulting in them banning you from their page - what is the accepted course of action if you then follow up with something that requires you to inform them of your actions and intent?

Do you abide by their wishes and do nothing, or inflame them by posting?

The reasons for my question are obvious, and I don't ask for input regarding anything other than the actual question above, thanks. Chaheel Riens (talk) 15:59, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I presume we are talking about user talk pages? If someone has asked you to stay away from their page and you don't need to be on their page then it is only polite to comply. We are much more relaxed about what goes on in user space than elsewhere. However, user talk pages are provided for the purpose of allowing communication with other editors and users do not have the power to control who posts on them. The user talk page does not belong to the user, it belongs to the community, same as any other page. If you have a need to communicate with the user, such as delivering one of the user warning templates or an AFD notification, then that is exactly what the page is for. If the user tries to prevent this then there may be a behavioural problem that needs dealing with.
On the other hand, issues with articles can (and usually should) be dealt with on the article talk page. There is really no need to take an article issue directly to a user, and if they don't want you to—then don't. SpinningSpark 17:00, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, talk pages. As per procedure I was required to inform a user of my actions via their talk page, despite them previously banning me from said page. They reverted the notification with the summary of "This editor obviously has comprehension difficulties, he or she is banned form this page" which seemed a bit unfair, nay insulting, hence my request here for clarification. Chaheel Riens (talk) 17:09, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you were required to post to their talk page, such as to notify them that you had reported them at a noticeboard, then you are required to post to their talk page. If they then insult you, then administrators who look into the issue that you raise may take note of the personal attack, and they should look out for the incoming boomerang. Were you notifying them of a report at a noticeboard? Robert McClenon (talk) 18:24, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen users add a request for someone else to notify the other user to their noticeboard posts when they've been asked not to visit a person's talk page. Depending on the message left and the entire history of the issue, a polite note should almost always be fine. --Onorem (talk) 18:31, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yup - Dispute resolution, the topic of which is what led the editor to ban me from his page - albeit 4 minutes prior to my required post. Chaheel Riens (talk) 18:47, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've notified the editor of the discussion here and at WP:DRN. Had the notice that you posted referred to dispute resolution, or to an edit war? Robert McClenon (talk) 19:48, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

James Purtill, St. Norbert Football Coach

Please correct the following: 2002 season - SNC did not play in the ncaa national play-offs. Delete the comment on losing in the playoffs. Also, that would make Jim Purtill's playoff record 1-10, not 1-11. Thank you

This can be verified on the SNC football website under schedules, 2002 shows no games played after the season final. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:301:770E:99F0:D464:22CE:E101:39E0 (talk) 16:31, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The post about Aspergers and the sub nautilous i wish to know where to tell people about mistakes and stuff, i wish to help people here better their articles on thing si know

i know a man who cna help you fix the page about apergers, becaus e alot of it is full of innaccuarcy and offensive lies and poor research that w a s used to make the page and it offended me becaus e i know someone who is not what you describe on the page and she is pissed, shes the one who vandalized that sh***y page. i am related toa very intlliegnt medicla researcher librain named George L Curran 3 the reason of someone you forgot to metnion on your nautilous submarine page, (sorry my typing is terrible due toa depressent or stress or anxiety drug messing with my muscle control a little and i am normal, i have normal problems, insomnia is normal too..ok let sgo on) and that is very mean to not include a man who should be famous for what he did with the sub, he helped make and design it, he has awonderful daughter and she is veyr old and ncie and wise, seh and her departed hsusband were in the military, they were smart peole and were the reasons why my friend, my relative she got a good education and yet you treta her as a vandal. shes got geneius blood in her and shes even related toa cleaver normal woman who is a clairvoyant ad she was known for being psychic and for her good card playing. my fmaily have hostory that wikipedia didn't know, because they don't do proper research or COLLEGE and evryone would use wikipedia for reeasearch and i ge tmost info from wikipedia and try to not use it.

the man you forgot in nautilous page forgot to mention builders and designers ho should be fmaous, look intor esearching mroe and then write your pages. don't use the crap and bigoty and idioacy from abd sources without contacting a man like George (a lirbarian who researches and knows mroe than the diiocy that wrote most of the bad sources you use here). Mr Shugg Carlton Shugg is also related to ME and he helped design prts a lot of stuff on that submarine..

also you need many many ocfrrections and better research and sources for PSERGRS PAGE so my friend and others like here will not bee called rated or crayz or unemosinal and unloving and slutty and stupid etc. and she hates autistics, because she cnanot connect with them or have normalacy aorund them, she is very normal she she knows best, she srelated to Curran. do nto emss with her fmaily they are very intelligent peole int ahtf amily (mroe intlligewnt than the diots who got her into trpouble because they misintrepted what she said and how she it and who she addressed and what she meant, so f them an didiot slike them.

sorry but a me d i take for either stress or depression or anxiety (all normal issues) is making typing without errors hard and i never really learne dan drmembered my limitedd typing skills so i hunt and peck which i got used to sinc ei done it for a long time maybe 100 or 15+ years., so yes i have normal disorders, not to mention hromonal stfuf that causes anger issues, and the metformin does help with mood problems, but sill anger is there and i feel calm and just at the point on giving up on anger.

so be ncie to me and policte and i shall treat you the same way. please forward this or maybe tell me wher eot post this for the main people of the site for thsoe idiots who wrote the aspergeds page and then blocke dmy poor friend who doe sn ot know hwo to edit pages without gettign in trouble with idiots who think thatb they got good sources and know everything well scrw them, they are idiots in comparison to my daddy. and im an adult, i am half his age., because thye angered my friend who ahs apsegres and shes been so messed by being abuused elgally and psychologically and verbally that she is angry and is i was told shes starting to think violent bad thoughts thanks to being misundertsood by diiots who don't know asperges or drugw ithdralw symotksm and think shes retarded thansk to idiots like wikpedia who clal her autistm and emosionnless and sh** like that.

i told you later in this lousy attempt to contact the iditos who made the aspergers page and i dunno how to because i keep finding articles and no wher eto type messeges or posts on here. you have upsett my friend so much that she got me to signup here and emssege you, because you made her so angry because you offend her. you make her and other extremely mild ASPEIES out to be a sexless boring autistic retards woith ocd and pscyhosis who doesn't like ebing touched and doesn't socialize doesn't ahve friends, does do anythign normal doesn't want marriage na dbab ies, doesn't date, don't make eye contact don't act normal or speka normal (but they do have social issues related to being interpreted correctly and udnertsood in writing, but can be undertsood much better in verbally, which si s ad)and you calso make her out to be a loner, be be mena and unemphatic, stupid, whcih is bull (she seletectivity likes to be touched, she is social, she has social skills too, but psychologically has toruble finding the right words, tends to upsett people ebcause she doesn't seem to speka the same english as most smericans, psychologically use of words menaing the way to speak english ina way to corectly ge twhta they wanrt and not be ignroe dn a dmisundertsood, she has toruble manipulating and convincing people of ehr needs and they just get worried, anrgym scared, upsett because she said soemthing that wa smisundertood by idiots who don't know aspegres liek the ab ck of their hands!)

how cna i make it clear to the writers who accuse d me years ago of vandalism, which in the usa is not the same thing as what foreigners believe. that iw as trying to add corrections to the post and that i know someone who can verify that the disability is mistaken for a worser one and that people with the illness do not have certain symotoms or may have different symptom form each other? seriously i am related to someone with serious aspegres and i know someone with the very mild form and that person is angry and the one who vandilized the post according to you foreigners who don't know anything about americans. i have trouble typing to to a med sideffect and cna think clearly and rationally and reasonable, so ere is no reason to not trust me. they are for depression an anxiety veyr bad porblems, but i am normal.

i cna list many lies and misunderstandings that you put on the asperges page. i know a 60 year old genius with 151 iq who says that spegreds and autism ar enot the same and should be in different catagories, but were put together by "idiots" quote the man who is a medicla lirbarian and researche smore and knows mroe than the majority of people on here. you don't need a phd to know mroe than other people. the perosn knows that spgers is nto seirous and that theya r enot all severeally disabled, some are very normal and wnat sex, friends, soulmates, marrige, etc (ghe man is named Goerge L Curan 3rd a nd related to a builder and designer of the Nautilous which you FAILED to include on that submarines page, you should be ashmed of your of yourselves and i wish to know where to tell people on ehre this?

aspgers cna love and have sex, they can make friends and be social. they cna show love and hug and love affection but may be unwilling to shwo affection to certain types of peole such as abusive mothers and verbal abusers, and people they find to be gross and ugly and icky even genetically flawed like schizos, etcetc. they cna have normal kdis and normal lives, they aon't all retarded like autistics and ar enot ALL not NOt all aytistic so cut it out! quit lying about them! find better sourced for your page please or will make an issue out of this and maybe egt you boycotted by intelligent hunmans. but many aspioes a rr sensitive and easily hurt (that includes vulnerable to tatck legally and verbally and writtenly misundertood becaus ethey cnanot understand all psychological uses of phrases and what to avloid when spekaing and writing how tl ake themselevs look normal and not crazy not retarded etc. the spcyhological sues of words and proper english is lacking, but not social skills. and they don't know hwo to get whta they want with their lack of psychological knowledge of words and phrase aand often they may accidenly repetaenedly speka in ways that work as reverse psychology, i got a lot of info form my friend about hwo she struggles to keep a mana round and lose them due to her saying the wrong things and inability to understand psychologicla use of americna englsih words, she even conbines at leats 2 or mroe ways to speka eblgish and people tend to treta her as they would a british talk would be treated, becAUSE they can be easily misundertsood like their use of words are didffwrent form us americans, like the word mate can be eaisly confused with the terms bf/gf/lover/soulmate/sexmate and sexmate is not sue din english but it describes the type of mate that means lover pretty much, se xpartner, etc.

my friend has less and less self estamm and self trust self love issues and thats why sheess saying she needs ot relearn some english skills.

if you saw austin poeweers than you'd understand my friend' situation aboud english word use that may be hard by americna sto understand since most americans are obexe and mental and also not educate dby a good college and high schools..

in ways that get them what they want, not get them in trouble)

about the attempts to correct asperges page, it eneds to be unmerged with autism for the psychological emposional problems that that caused for many aspergers sufferees who hate autistics and cannot understand or get along or connect with them.

my friend only just a coule eyar sago stopped hiding her apsegreds, becaus eshe knows her daddy is wright (it snot my dad, i made a typoe error, he snot my dad, but i am fmaily to them)).

if you have add and are reaidng this then you don't have undiagnos serious add or maybe you can control and medicate and get counselign for it unlike the mpajority of lazy distracted people. tv doe sindeed help cause add adhd symotoms and eyt maybe noone adde dthis fact/s to the add/adhd page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anonymousfemale (talkcontribs) 16:43, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Rick Barry

rick barry ...e ABA stands as the highest career total for a player in any professional league...NO...WILT CHAMBERLAIN....50 POINTS PER GAME...FYI — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.131.209.44 (talk) 20:16, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are probably thinking of Chamberlain's 50.4 points per game in the 1961–62 NBA season. His career NBA average was 30.1 points per game, a little less than Barry's career ABA average. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:39, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Evening All, I recently made some quite large changes to two pages, namely Jason_King_(radio) and Joel Ross. Since the edits to the latter, a number of IP users have taken exception to a single (sourced and well publicised) paragraph I have added and are removing it on a regulary basis [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. I have attempted to warn the users about their edits. The reason I am calling for help is this culminated this evening in a newly registered user (User:Expessman89) removing the paragraph again, and adding an unsourced claim [9] (which would seem to be something only Ross would know). As this is a BLP I'm cautious over where to go with this, and how to advise new / IP editors. Many thanks for your time on this one. -LookingYourBest (talk) 20:26, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have a few suggestions. First, engage in discussion on the article talk page, Talk: Joel Ross. I don't see any discussion either by you or by the IPs. Second, you may either request Dispute Resolution or open a Request for Comments to get consensus as to whether to add the paragraph. Third, since the IPs are reverting the addition without edit summaries and without discussion, you may request semi-protection at Requests for Page Protection. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:00, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thank you very much for those suggestions, I'll give them a try. -LookingYourBest (talk) 21:20, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
