Pran, Amrish Puri, Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, with 3 awards each, have more Best Supporting Actor awards at Filmfare than any other actor. Seven actors have won the award twice; in chronological order, they are Motilal, Nana Palsikar, Raaj Kumar, Amjad Khan, Danny Denzongpa, Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor.

Abhishek Bachchan also holds the record for most consecutive wins, having won the award thrice in a row from 2004 to 2006. Three other actors have won the award in consecutive years; in chronological order, they are Danny Denzongpa (1991–92), Jackie Shroff (1994–95) and Amrish Puri (1996–97).

No domination could be seen in the 1950s but Pran, Nana Palsikar and Raaj Kumar changed this in the 60s with two wins each. Amitabh Bachchan was victorious in 70s with two wins. There were no repeat wins in the 1980s however , Danny Denzongpa, Jackie Shroff and Amrish Puri both had two consecutive wins in the 90s. Abhishek Bachchan was truimphant in the 2000s with three consecutive wins however no actor is leading the 2010s until now.

Only twice have siblings been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Award during the same year: Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor in 1982 (Shammi ultimately won), and Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan in 1998 (Salman ultimately won). Father and son Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan have been nominated for this award in a single year on three occasions for three consecutive years (2004–2006). In all three times, Abhishek won the award.

Pran and Amitabh Bachchan hold the record for the highest number of Best Supporting Actor nominations, with 9, followed by Amrish Puri and Naseeruddin Shah, with 8 nominations each. Bachchan is the most-nominated performer in any major acting category at Filmfare, with 39 nominations overall.
