Exclude subpages in search

Is there a way to search for a topic in top-level pages only? This would be useful if you wanted to exclude archived discussions. (Please {{ping}} me when replying.), YBG (talk) 00:40, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

YBG: If you click on Wikipedia's search facility without entering any text, you get to a page where you can do a search while specifying what types of page to search; so you can select "(Article)" only, with no discussion pages etc. Alternatively you can use Google to search within Wikipedia, it only indexes articles so it shouldn't find you anything from Wikipedia discussion pages. Kevin Stocker page has false info under post playing career

Well this is embarrasing

So this genius reset his password a couple months ago, and has managed to forget the passwords to both his Wikipedia account and associated e-mail. While I chose the option to stay logged in for 365 days, which gives me several months still, I'd love to figure out how to resolve this before I'm locked out of my account. Since you have advanced user rights, you can create a phab: request for a new email address to be stored for your account. They want proof you are the real user but that should be possible when you are already logged in. The only example request I could find is phab:T176480 but there are others. Is the email account a paid for one? Their support is usually more helpful because it means retaining a customer. Can I annotate my contributions list?

Is there any way I can add publicly-viewable notes to edits on my contributions page? Sort of like edit summaries, but added after the fact? It's just that I made some edits when I was really young (as early as 11 years old) that I'm kind of embarrassed to leave there without context because, besides being against Wikipedia policies (which I didn't know back then), they're clearly motivated by something so counter to how I feel now. I don't want the edits removed from my page (if that's even possible), as I'd rather leave them there for posterity, plus they are pretty funny and quite ironic. But I would like anyone who looks at them to see the proper context behind it. If there's no way I can add notes to my previous contributions myself, would there be any way for an admin or sysop to retroactively modify my edit summaries or something? All I really need is some way to publicly post something that will be visible on my contribs page when sorted by "oldest".

Oh, and don't think I don't know exactly where you're headed right now. Here's a link, to save you the trouble. Specifically, the edits I'm referring to are the ones that removed things like profanity and nudity, with descriptions that made it sound like I'm greatly in favor of censorship. Which of course, now, I'm quite against. I think my motivation was that I was paranoid my parents would see that stuff and tell me I'm not allowed to use Wikipedia, so I wanted to remove the stuff from Wikipedia. XD

• It's possible for admins to hide edits and/or their summaries in the histories of articles, but the circumstances are quite specific, such as copyright infringements, and wouldn't cover your situation. Changes won't save

I'm obviously doing something wrong and ready to tear my hair out. I've now spent hours trying to update a bio. I've followed all instructions, made the changes, everything looked good. I clicked the PUBLISH box. When I tried to leave the page to READ the article, a pop-up window said "Changes may not be saved" if I left the window. Sure enough--they weren't. I tried editing again. After I made all the changes again and tried to PUBLISH, I got a message that someone else was trying to edit the article at the same time (probably me), and I had to compare my changes to what was currently published and merge my changes into the current article in order for them to be saved. I've had an edit conflict with myself in the past (possibly because of my slow internet connection), but you did successfully make two edits. These were reverted. Please find WP:Reliable sources for your changes. I note that you have not declared your WP:Conflict of interest in the article you were editing. Where to put an abbreviation definition

So I come across a mysterious abbreviation, EIIN, in an article about a school. I've established to my own satisfaction that this stands for "Educational Institute Identification Number" and is assigned by the Bangladeshi government to schools there. Several articles reference either 'EIIN' or variations of the fuller name.

Neither the Ministry of Education (Bangladesh) and Education in Bangladesh talk about this EIIN, and unfortunately the Bangladesh Ministry of Education site is all in Bengali.

• In my opinion (which is thoroughly uninformed about Bengladeshi topics) the refs you showed are enough to support a short section at Ministry of Education (Bangladesh), to which you can then redirect EEIN; you can then wikilink EEIN appearances in other articles. I doubt a standalone article would hold water, as EEIN does not seem notable to me (again, based on the sources you presented); but a short section need not be about a notable topic, the bar of WP:DUEWEIGHT is much lower. As for the location, since EEIN is an administrative concept, I would argue it belongs to the "ministry" rather than the "education" article. Non-free image

Recently, I uploaded a non-free image of a living Pakistani politician but it was tagged for deletion by ZI Jony who says the file should be replaceable with a free licensed image because it is of a living person. I tried to explain him on my talk page that there is no free equivalent available yet and the copyright holder is not willing to release it under the Wikipedia compatible license. Please suggest if this non-free image can be kept in the absence of free-licensed image? --Saqib (talk) 13:07, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

• @Saqib: Unfortunately, no. The fine print of WP:NFCC #1 says Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created (...) which has long been understood here to mean that no photography of a living person will be accepted (since someone could in theory go ask the subject, take their photo, and release the rights). In my minority opinion, that rule should be relaxed in certain cases, but here I would think that a (former) Pakistani MP is not a recluse hermit who cannot be approached. Question about page mover

Hello. I was planning on request the page mover permission once I get to 3,000 edits. As I am involved with WP:Requested moves, and also has moved some pages myself. Just one question though. Does consensus have to go my way in the votes that I propose in order to get the permission? I know quite a few of my RM's have not been unsuccessful, but my RM's are all good faith, so I was just wondering. Your help will be appreciated. Thanks. My Archive

My archive on my talk page only shows 1 archive. I have a second archive which I originally called "2" but I renamed it to "2017". It's not showing up. How can it be fixed to show as "2017"? And can you fix it so that my first archive which is named "1" shows up as "2012 - 2016"? Thank You...

@Roberto221: I'm pretty sure the auto parameter only detects numbers. The first archive (2012 - 2016) shows up because User talk:Roberto221/Archive 1 redirects to it. The second archive, 2017, doesn't - but you can solve this by creating User talk:Roberto211/Archive 2 as a redirect to that page, or moving the page to the /Archive 2 title. Talk page archives should be subpages of the talk page. Can I delete User:Roberto221/Archive 2012? Wrong Museum Title

The museum recently changed its name from Old Coast Guard Station to Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum. We are unable to edit/fix the name to show the correct name. The info in the article is correct in using Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum. The photo is also incorrect, as it shows the older sign.

You appear to meet our definition of having a conflict of interest: please see WP:COI. A mere assertion that unreferenced existing material is incorrect is all we need to remove it for you, but we will not in general remove material that is referenced to a reliable source. Deletion of several articles with hoax information

Hello. After finding that the "Spanish tickler" was one of Wikipedia's longest lasting hoax articles, I checked similar articles regarding torture devices and found that many have little few sources and that the sources are not reliable - they tend to be the websites that were used in the "Spanish Tickler" article.

I've searched for more information and found nothing regarding historical or scholarly reference to them.

I am having trouble understanding the guidelines on how to properly nominate articles for deletion. I have basically just copied and pasted the template regarding the nomination of deletion onto the article pages.

The articles that I would like to have deleted because they are likely hoaxes are: Mask of infamy, Knee splitter, and Heretic's fork.

Hi, I'm having trouble with an unwanted automatic caption appearing when I use a location map as the image parameter in the infobox military conflict template. @Catrìona: per the template parameters If caption is defined but is not assigned a value, the map will not be framed and no caption will be displayed. I have done this by adding | caption = within the template but not adding a caption after the equal sign. Does this fix your problem? TheDoctorWho (talk) 07:12, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

On scientific topics, we tend to keep out fringe theories that serious scientists won't entertain. On political topics, things are more difficult because some editors have strong political biases. As a matter of policy, we tend to include those views that are supported by WP:Reliable sources. If there are facts that you want to include, please mention the sources that support your view. The talk page of an article is usually a good place to discuss controversial additions. In the case of your giraffe edit, the content was reverted because it was put in the wrong place. Reverted. User:Abelmoschus Esculentus, the only live reference in the article, to blackpast.org, gives the name as Charles. @Rojomoke: I just checked the blackpast source. It's a blog and a tertiary source. The two sources of that blog also used the name "C. Steven McGann". Very true. But it's the only source we've got, except for the uncorroborated claim from the OP, who may or may not be McGann. Question: What is the purpose of article Talk Pages?

I'd like some clarification, please. What is the purpose of article Talk Pages? I was told by another editor that a Talk Page is for suggesting specific changes to an article. It is not to be used for making general suggestions to an article, I do not believe that to be accurate. So, I am here asking if that statement is true or not. This is a general help desk, it can't give a definitive answer to questions such as this one, only opinions. You made a complaint, you were told you could add whatever "other side" you were referring to if you had reliable sources. I don't understand how it devolved into a metadiscussion about talk pages which seems a diversion from the issue raised by the other editor's response, which was both "you can fix it" and "we would need more specifics to discuss your post". It's certainly true that we expect specific issues to be raised when someone has a complaint, which is why some templates are removed from article pages when they aren't followed up by specifics. Wikipedia languages are edited independently. The English Wikipedia has more features than other languages. We have both Template:Lang-ar for Arabic and Template:Lang-arz for Egyptian Arabic. Egypt national football team uses Template:Lang-arz. The Italian Wikipedia has no such template. Their article uses it:Template:Arabo for Arabic. Help with formatting CC0

The title I typed into the heading of this section was...

"Help with formatting CC0"

...but when displayed, the 0 is smaller than the CC.

How do I get it to display CC0 properly?

I suggest you ignore it if it's just a discussion heading. Some fonts have digits which are lower than capital letters. See e.g. https://www.quora.com/Why-do-many-typeface-designs-employ-lining-numerals-that-are-shorter-than-their-capital-letters. Level 1 and level 2 headings happen to use such fonts by default. Something like == Help with formatting <span style="font-family:times">CC0</span> == would change it. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:09, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

style="font-size:1em" would change nothing but just give the normal size for the font and circumstances. Something like style="font-size:1.3em" could be applied to the digit alone but would look awful in other fonts. I don't know a preferred method and haven't seen any discussion or applied method. style="font-family:times" is better but not ideal. It could be applied to the whole heading to avoid a jarring font change for some users during the heading but then there might be a jarring change between separate headings. I don't see any way that Wikipedia as it exists today can comply with [ https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/License_Versions#Modifications_and_adaptations_must_be_indicated ]. When you make an edit to a page, it is currently licensed under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License, which means that I can edit your edit. You fixed the red error with [5]. |website= is for the title of a website, generally not a domain unless the domain is also used as title. I would have removed it and used |publisher=The Carter Center instead. Their website https://www.cartercenter.org doesn't appear to have a title. A friend of mine inserted her personal self-promoting information into an approved and long running article regarding my persona.

I was alerted by people in the industry that what was inserted was clearly personal self-promoting information by the other person. In an attempt to ensure that that self-promotion by the other individual was removed, and not knowing much about how articles are created/managed on wikipedia, I accessed the article and deleted that section that was added for self promotion by that individual and updated it with recent awards/recognitions. I did not know that any article content can be created only by others.

Knowing that now, please correct on my behalf and eliminate those insertion by the self promoting individual and restore the article to its original content as approved and long running.

The template to announce article copied by newspaper

Hi, In past i had seen somewhere a template that informs the talk page that the article data was copied by this and this newspaper without any credits.   • I'm using a Mac, I switch my keyboard to unicode hex (you may need to add it first in your keyboard preferences), type an n en the unicode value 0304 while holding the option key. Alternatively, bring up the Character Viewer with control+command+space. The combining macron is in the Phonetic Alphabet section. Type an n and click on the macron to add it. If you know the Unicode hex value 0304 of macron then you can type n̄ in wikitext to produce n̄. If you know the decimal value 772 then type n̄ to produce n̄. If you prefer the real character in the wikitext then preview and copy-paste the character. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:06, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Earlier I came across a movie/ film, where the info box earlier says it was based on a game. But is that related to a movie/ film? At said page/ article. If it does not mention that, and was based off of that. Other than having WP:TRIVIALCAT. Then my concern is I don't know if its only that one page/ article, or the info box says other things too. Where two unrelated names or companies help did something, as only one of the two did. Like in one instance, from a while ago. A mobile game is by Square Enix and in the listed info it had Ubisoft there, when using the <br>. Well that instance was shown in this show.

• I'm not sure I understand your question or questions. I do notice that you edited the infobox at Real Girl (film) to remove the games from the "based on" parameter and replace them with the manga. Removal is fine as they were unreferenced, but adding the manga is questionable since this is also unreferenced. If another editor finds refrences in reliable sources that the movie is in fact based on the games, then it is perfectly acceptable to add that information to the infobox, with references: it's not more trivial than many other facts. -Arch dude (talk) 17:57, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Incorrect information from a spam bot source regarding fantasies about the blackhill transmitter in scotland

I've tried to edit the page but the spam botter keeps putting incorrect information back up again.

I work in the blackhill transmitter station at "blackhill" and with regard to radio stations coming from the 2 masts at kirk of shotts the only radio services being broadcast by us are Bauer central scot DAB 11D, SDL national and BBC DAB along with freeview HD services on the south tower, the north tower only broadcasts DVB-T1 standard definition tv

BBC radio's 1,2,3,4 and scotland FM services to Lanarkshire, Glasgow and the west are broadcast at 20 kilowatts from our other mast at "kirk of shotts" and the only commercial FM station we carry is Classic FM 101.70mhz.

All other frequencies allocated to local radio in Glasgow is beamed at lower power fro Cathkin braes and 96.3 from Seargent's law over Paisley along with Bauer Glasgow DAB 11C, as with Edinburgh services are broadcast from Craigkelly or Swanston sites.

The orrendous incorrect information on the page I provided the link to is wholly incorrect and in breach of British as well as EU laws on publishing false information, and if the page is verified it will be verified bt ann autobot verification service, such information would NOT be verified by Arquiva.

If the page is not deleted and source users account blocked or deleted we at Arquiva along with Ofcom will have no alternative but to seel legal action in accordance with the wireless telegraphy act and further action from Ofcom may result if you do not comply with this legal reasonable request very promptly, we expect the page deleted in such a way it can NOT be re-published.

If you refuse to remove the page action will be taken and we expect you to comply with this request before we need to take legal steps, ideally within 48 hours but if it is not gone within the next 5 working days, friday 20th july 2018 then we will take this to both the company's lawyers and to OFcom, where we will also be suggesting to Ofcom to block wikipedia out of the UK IP address group as being a source of incorrect and legally infringing and damaging lies.

Ofcom shows Black Hill as a transmitter on several of its maps (http://static.ofcom.org.uk/static/radiolicensing/mcamaps/al000290.pdf shows only Black Hill for Smooth) - Wikipedia only uses published sources. If the facts have changed we have to wait for them to be published, so you could ask Ofcom about updating the information on their site; it looks like they do update them as some have more than one map, with the older one having "superceded" written across it. I'm inclined to doubt the bona fides of "Gaz Young", as he fails to spell correctly the name of the company he claims to represent. The article needs WP:Reliable sources if it is to remain on Wikipedia. It would probably be best if you suggested improvements on the talk page of the article (because of your conflict of interest). Is it a COI?

I wanted to organise an event where people write a summary for a wikipedia article about a book together and discuss the book, maybe learn to edit wikipedia. I then realised that I am an intern for a charity that has received money from another charity that was founded by the book author. Does that mean that writing that summary would be against WP:COI? Tired time Please note that Wikipedia is not for merely writing a book summary; the book must meet notability guidelines as shown in independent reliable sources in order to merit an article here. Not every book does. The notability guidelines are at WP:NBOOKS. The book you want to write about must meet at least one of the guidelines there.

As for COI, I think it would depend on how closely the two charities work together and if the giving of money was just a general donation or was meant to influence the charity in some way. Others may know more. 331dot (talk) 10:02, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
