    Adding a new writing method

Hi wikipedia, I'm Gilang. I'm an Indonesian and a Javanese. As a javanese, we actually write our language in 2 writing system, which is the roman alphabet and the javanese alphabet. But in wikipedia, all the articles that is written are in roman alphabet. and it's kinda frustrate me, cause I really wanna make a records in our language using our own native writing system. If you know how it works, please kinda let me know. I just wanna fulfil my cultural obligation as a javanese to preserve our writing system, despite the loss popularity among our people so that it's not forgotten. Gilangfaturrozy (talk) 00:01, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Gilangfaturrozy, the Javanese Wikipedia is here. Is that what you need?--Quisqualis (talk) 00:30, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It is, but all the articles are in roman alphabet — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gilangfaturrozy (talkcontribs) 00:43, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gilangfaturrozy: Each language Wikipedia has its own rules and guidelines for how articles are written. You will need to ask there about getting the other alphabet added for articles. We here at the English language Wikipedia can't help with that. RudolfRed (talk) 00:45, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gilangfaturrozy, you can request a new language from this page m:RFL--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 01:05, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gilangfaturrozy: When a language has two writing systems, the usual approach it to treat is as two languages. Since the current Javanese wikipedia uses the roman alhpbet, you will need to create a separate version for the javanese-alphabet version. This is not technically difficult, but it is a lot of work. Until you attract a user community, you will be doing most of that work yourself, probably my manually transcribing articles from the existing roman-alphabet version. I wish you luck. -Arch dude (talk) 04:38, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As I’ve said before, there’s also possible solution used by the Anglo-Saxon or Gothic language Wikipedia, which are each available in several different script systems. Cheers  hugarheimur 06:20, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Is that automatic transliteration? Does anyone know of an algorithm for transliterating between Latin-alphabet Javanese and Javanese-alphabet Javanese?-- The Anome (talk) 09:50, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Update: This might be of interest. If there are simple transliteration rules, it should be possible to set up an automatic transliteration system, if you can get other editors to help, and the WMF to enable support. -- The Anome (talk) 09:57, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing for religious group

I am the Minister General for the Order of St. Francis and we are identified on several pages here on Wikipedia. I have tried several times to correct website address links and clean up content that is relevant to our organization and now I have found that all of the changes that I have made are being labelled as "vandalism". Tell me exactly what you need me to do to make the changes that are necessary and if not, then I would like to remove us completely from this resource as we have been "vandalized" on several occasions in the past by another group that has been barred from Wikipedia for copyright infringement on our content. Zane Young73.35.189.123 (talk) 01:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid directly editing articles related to your order, but you may make formal edit requests(click for instructions) on the article talk page, detailing changes you feel are needed and why. If you are compensated in any way for your position(not just money), you need to make the paid editing declaration, a Terms of Use requirement. 331dot (talk) 01:41, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You have no control over the information our unpaid self-selected horde of editors choose to add to articles, and we will not honor a request for article deletion. However, we do value your input, in spite of the impression we sometimes collectively present. Since you are a "paid editor" as we define the term, you will best be served by creating an account under your own name or under a random pseudonym, but not under the name of your organization (see WP:USERNAME). Then, declare your paid status on your user page, and then make edit recommendations, with cited sources, on the talk pages of the relevant articles. Since you wish to make easily-citeable changes of simple fact, this will go quickly. If you encounter any difficulties, please come back here. -Arch dude (talk) 17:09, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How can I make a Wikipedia page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noah8799 (talkcontribs) 02:46, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Noah8799: Your userpage and responses to messages at your talk page do not indicate that you intend to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, should you wish to do so please see WP:YFA, the tutorial and you might consider the Wikipedia adventure. Editing existing articles before starting a new one would be beneficial and some more links will be left at your talk page. Please note, notability is all important and please do not write about yourself. This is not a good idea. Eagleash (talk) 03:26, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It has been removed since. In future, revert yourself, which is much faster than asking here on the public forum. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:13, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Ram nareshji: I have removed the line and left a note for the user. If you find unconstructive editing (this was possibly a good faith edit), please feel free to remove it yourself. This 'delayed' EC was caused by the maintenance being carried out 5AM to 5.30 AM (UTC) which caused the page not to save; but was still 'open' a few hours later! Bad edit - please keep quote in from ref number 29 - it is in red. It is too hard for me to fix up now. Thankyou in advance. 175.32.219.132 (talk) 05:14, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

When you attempted to add the |quote= parameter here, instead of "quote=", you wrote "quote:". All that was necessary was to change the ':' to a '=', which I have done for you. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:56, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Lupton editor! Haven't you noticed that at the top of this page you're told If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page? -- Hoary (talk) 08:19, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: They've been told that, and other things, many, many times. Apparently, we're all here to clean up after them. Ideas? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:40, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There's something to be said for this.
@AlanM1: Refuse to do anything? (It's not as if the articles concerned ever appear to have much importance; although to be fair, this may be the most vapid I've seen.) Wikipedia is of course laden with mistakes and junk that are much worthier of our attention: example, example. (And of course pungent flatus too: example.) -- Hoary (talk) 00:07, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: There have been two problems with that approach. The first is that someone usually comes along and does it anyway (not usually me). The second issue is that the IP editor in question is sometimes (maybe often?) the one that broke the article. That's the part that really needs to be resolved. If someone wants to contribute, great, but be willing (and able, as they claim, inexplicably, not to be) to fix what you break. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 00:17, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AlanM1: Next time, shall we describe, demonstrate, or describe and demonstrate how to revert? (I have, on occasion, utterly screwed up a table while "improving" an article. I've then reverted my "improvement".) -- Hoary (talk) 00:24, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion

Why my page is deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.157.0.23 (talk) 07:06, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You mean you don't allow copy and paste of already prepared typed work to be filled in my article page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.157.0.23 (talk) 07:10, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're going to have to be more specific. The two posts above are the only recent contributions from your IP address (or any near it) in the last week. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 07:51, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

However, keep in mind that your personal knowledge or experience cannot be used to make changes to an article. Any such changes have to be backed up by citing reliable sources, the criteria for which are especially strict for medical topics (see WP:MEDRS). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:43, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    DAMS IN KERALA

WIKIPEDIA SAYS THAT OF THE 59 DAMS IN KERALA, 3 ARE UNDER TAMILNADU PWD. MY QUESTION IS WHY? AND HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? THIS IS LIKE SAYING THAT MY NEIGHBOUR OWNS MY HOUSE. WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS HAPPENING? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.199.161.160 (talk) 12:21, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop SHOUTING. The place for suggestions for improvements to the article is Talk:List of dams and reservoirs in Kerala. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:37, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But for general knowledge questions, as this is, if the Wikipedia articles about the particular dam (eg Malampuzha Dam) don't answer the question, then the Reference Desk is the best place to ask. But that article I linked to says "The dam was constructed by Tamilnadu government but later the dam and Palakkad district belongs to Kerala state", which may be the answer to your question. --ColinFine (talk) 14:02, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Article review

Hi! I just made an article on English Wikipedia for the Montgeron-Crosne station in France. May I ask how long does it take for an article to be reviewed? And if after that period still no admin has reviewed my article, how can I get an admin's attention to tell him/her to review my article? Thanks.A smart brainy man (talk) 13:27, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A smart brainy man You have not submitted your draft for review. I will shortly add the appropriate information to allow you to do so. Once it is submitted, there is no way to know how long it will take, as drafts are reviewed in no particular order. It depends on the amount of backlog there is(it has been reduced recently, but can change at any time). 331dot (talk) 13:35, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@A smart brainy man: Also note that draft articles submitted to AFC are peer-reviewed by experienced editors (a few of which might coincidentally be admins). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:48, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A list of people who came from India to Guyana during the 1800’s.

    Hello,

My name is Nazeem Mohamed and I was born in Guyana SA.in 1947. As a young kid I asked my Dad if he can tell me something about my grandfather. All he told me was a name “Yakub”. I really would love to have more information about those people ( including my grandfather ) who came from India, on ships, by the British. I would really like some information about my grandfather, where he came from and what happened to him. Change wat appears when people search my name

Hello, I am a professional musician and would like to change what wikipedia displays when I appear from a google search. It currently show my status as married but that is incorrect. I edited this information in my wikipedia bio, but wikipedia still displays it on a search. Please advise. Thank you, Wayne Escoffery — Preceding unsigned comment added by Escofferymusic (talkcontribs) 15:05, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Escofferymusic, hi Wayne. We don't control what Google put on their information boxes - you'd have to approach them about that. I guess it will get updated at some point to reflect the new content in the article, but we have no control over that. Since you have edited the article about yourself, you should review COI - there are steps you have to take, and certain things you are not supposed to do. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:14, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    Our standard reply:
Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. Kendell Jenner

Kendell was fined 90,000.00 dollars for fraud for the Frye Festival, it should be put on her page that she defrauded people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:249:447F:AD20:6D64:1752:ADEB:7B50 (talk) 15:49, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you can cite a reliable source (WP:RS), then you can add it to the Kendall Jenner article yourself or you can put it on the article's talk page at talk:Kendall Jenner and ask another editor to add it to the article. -Arch dude (talk) 16:53, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See: Aviles, Gwen (May 21, 2020). "Kendall Jenner to pay $90,000 settlement for promoting Fyre Festival". NBC News.107.15.157.44 (talk) 19:10, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wording is important, and should follow the source. I believe it's a settlement of a civil lawsuit by the trustee in the Fyre bankruptcy, recouping part of the $275K she was paid to promote the venture. It's not a "fine" levied by anyone. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:55, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Linking to gadgets?

Is there any way to generate a wikilink to a gadget's checkbox under preferences? I just suggested that somebody turn on "Preferences / Gadgets / Appearance / Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures, to be relative to local time". It would be so much nicer if I could have just given them a link directly to the right section. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:44, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know a way to do that for users with JavaScript enabled in the browser, and that's nearly all users. You need Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets to get the Gadgets tab and then you have already used an anchor. If you are already on the gadgets tab then it works for me to manually change the url to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#ooui-php-293. But it only works to click the url or Special:Preferences#ooui-php-293 if JavaScript is disabled and all preferences are shown on the same page. Otherwise you just get the User profile tab, and if you click the Gadgets tab from there then you lose #ooui-php-293. A "double anchor" doesn't work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets#ooui-php-293. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:26, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We have {{Myprefs}} to give instructions but it's also unable to link to an anchor within a tab. No solution was found at Template talk:Myprefs#Linking to sections within tabs. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:59, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
phab:T53147 may get to this one day, but probablly as part of the very long outstanding Gadgets 2.0 system. — xaosflux Talk 18:08, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to that, the anchors (values of the id= attributes) are not static. As I write this, ooui-php-293 is the anchor for the gadget described as "Display diffs with the old yellow-and-green colors and design", but that will change if another option (not necessarily a gadget) is added or removed. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:39, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If anchors worked then we could add them in the messages, e.g. MediaWiki:Gadget-CommentsInLocalTime. I found phab:T54469 but I'm not sure how https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/260216 works and whether it could be used for this purpose. It does work in some cases for builtin MediaWiki options, e.g.: Special:Preferences#mw-htmlform-displaywatchlist, Special:Preferences#mw-htmlform-diffs, Special:Preferences#mw-htmlform-flaggedrevs-ui, Special:Preferences#mw-htmlform-echocrosswiki. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:53, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I examined the code in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/260216. It looks for anchors starting with mw-. I have added [1] four anchors to MediaWiki:Gadget-CommentsInLocalTime as a test, two starting with mw- and two without. The gadget name CommentsInLocalTime is part of all four names but this is not required: Special:Preferences#mw-gadgets-CommentsInLocalTime, Special:Preferences#mw-CommentsInLocalTime, Special:Preferences#gadgets-CommentsInLocalTime, Special:Preferences#CommentsInLocalTime. The two mw- links work for me, going to the Gadgets tab and scrolling to the right gadget. The other two don't work but just stay on the User profile tab. Some or all the anchors will be removed later so don't rely on them working permanently until it's decided what to do. We could e.g. add an anchor to every gadget message, just the headings (assuming MediaWiki:Gadget-section-appearance and other headingss allow an anchor), or nothing. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:50, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The two mw- ones certainly  Works for me in Firefox. From an accessibility standpoint, the method used (adding anchors inside the gadget description) is less than ideal, because they're after the relevant <input /> checkbox. There is a <label>...</label> element, but whilst that fully encloses the description it doesn't enclose the checkbox as well (it could do, it's allowed by the HTML spec, but that would require a mediawiki change). The label is associated with the input via for="ooui-php-292" and id="ooui-php-292" attributes respectively, so the descriptive text woks as a hotspot for the checkbox - but does everybody realise that? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:53, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
MediaWiki talk:Gadgets-definition/Archive 1#Add table of contents? is related to the headings option. Headings don't have checkbox issues. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:04, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    "LOST" EARLY-TALKIE FEATURE FILMS

Attn: Have all but given up on reaching you, so convoluted have I found the means to possibly do so.

I'm a freelance writer, having sold to Citadel; St. Martin's; McGraw-Hill; et al. Mostly film history but wrote the liner notes for Radio Archives "Philo Vance" CD box sets (which can be read online, appearing with the second set in the series) and sundry magazine articles. I have put on film programs for the Wistariahurst Museum and The Mark Train House. Have extensive collections of related materials; loaned films from my collection to the UCLA Film and Television Archive and The George Eastman House for restoration projects.

Reason for this email: just looked over your extensive listing pertaining to the status of early-talkies, and saw THE NIGHT PARADE (RKO; 1929) listed as "lost". I have a complete 16mm print of this feature; it was formerly in TV release via U.A.A. and most likely now owned by Turner Entertainment, who acquired the bulk of the RKO features along with those of MGM and Warner Bros.

A 16mm print in my collection which is apparently otherwise "lost" is THE LINE-UP, a two-reel talkie crime film from 1929. A clip from my copy can be viewed online by using the name VIOLA RICHARD (who has the female lead; had previously appeared in silent comedy shorts of the late Twenties, mostly with Laurel and Hardy). Said clip is mistakenly referred to as being from a segment of THE LINE-UP whereas it was obtained from my print, which is fully complete. I recently allowed Greg Luce to release it intact on DVD, available from his Sinister Cinema catalog. The subject used the Powers Cinephone system, as was then also being used by Walt Disney, Mascot Pictures, and the Harmon-Ising MGM cartoons.

Cordially, Ray Cabana, Jr. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ANABACCHECKERS (talkcontribs) 21:15, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know where you saw The Night Parade listed as a lost film, since there is a article on it; clearly it is not "lost" -- feel free to correct obvious errors. Wikipedia is created, updated and maintained by volunteers; you are more than welcome to improve Wikipedia yourself! Please note that original research is not allowed, and reliable sources are needed. If you'd rather not make edits yourself, leave a note on article's talk page. 107.15.157.44 (talk) 21:58, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ANABACCHECKERS: You've apparently misunderstood Wikipedia's organization (or rather, lack thereof). This is a volunteer-driven encyclopedia, not a publishing company. You'll want to contact the actual owners of those films' rights so they can restore and re-release it -- we have no means (either technical nor legal) do that. If the films are in the public domain, I've seen similar restored releases from companies like The Criterion Collection and Kino International (company) (and there are undoubtedly others).
You having a copy doesn't revoke any "lost" status until those films are verified by external parties (not us, don't even bother thinking of asking of sending us copies or something because, again, we're a volunteer-driven encyclopedia). Ian.thomson (talk) 22:01, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know where you're looking. List of lost films doesn't have The Line-up or Night Parade, and we don't even have an article for the former itself. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:29, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For example, if you have a suggestion for Imagination Movers, then make it in Talk:Imagination Movers. Always provide reliable, independent sources for what you say. -- Hoary (talk) 00:11, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Heffer2005: Note that IMDB and other sites like it that are user-contributed without professional editorial oversight are not considered to be reliable sources. Also, there are probably lots of cameo roles in which musicians, and other people who are not primarily actors, appear that are not listed in our filmogs. There seems to be a general trend among editors (I think) towards making filmogs more of a selection of significant works, not an exhaustive list of every appearance. This is particularly necessary because of the lack of reliable sources to cite those less-significant works. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 00:24, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citing different articles/titles from the same journal

It's possible to cite different pages from the same source.
How do I do this for different articles or titles from the same journal? Even if it's not necessary and I can just use the page method, leaving the title blank would trigger a 'Missing or empty |title=' error, like this.[1] Is there a way to get around this problem? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PianistHere (talkcontribs) 03:13, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PianistHere. {{Cite journal}} is used to cite a specific paper in a journal, which is why requires both title= (the article) and journal=. I would recommend using a different CS1 template: {{cite encyclopedia}} can be used for collections of multiple articles that aren't journals, and for the specific example source above, {{cite report}} seems to be the most appropriate. You can then add the section name or page number with the {{rp}} or {{sfn}} templates like so:[2]: 5 [2]: §Definition [2]: §III. Status  or like so.[3] If you have to cite multiple articles in the same issue of a journal and not multiple sections or pages in an article, I'd just duplicate the reference completely. Chinese lunar calendar festivals
    Chinese lunar calendar festivals

China is the most popular country in the world and has many amazing festivals. I will be telling you about the main chinese festivals that you can go and see for yourself. They are amazing!

What is Chinese new year? Chinese new year is a celebration where they celebrate, you guessed it, new year. In chinese new year they celebrate with costume dragons and instruments. Chinese new year is held on the 12th feb every year because on the lunar calendar 12th feb is new year. A lunar calendar is a calendar based on the monthly cycles of the Moon's phases (synodic months), in contrast to solar calendars, whose annual cycles are based only directly on the solar year. The last chinese new year day is on the 26th of feb and is otherwise known as the lantern festival.

Background Chinese new year is held on the first day of the year on the lunar calendar and on our calendar it's held on the 12th feb. The origin of the Chinese new year dates back to the Shang Dynasty (17th–11th century BC). Shang Dynasty: the imperial (royal) dynasty (a family full of strong imperial leaders) ruling china from about the 18th-12th centuries BC. It began as the result of a fight against the monster named Nian (a monster that liked to eat children). Nian appeared at the end of every year and people set off firecrackers to get rid of it. Gradually, the custom of expelling the monster on the last day of the year became an annual festival and it is still celebrated every year.

The last day of Chinese New Year is a special celebration called the Lantern Festival. This festival first came about during the Han Dynasty. Lanterns were lit in honor of Buddha. Other traditions on this day include guessing riddles (which began during the Song Dynasty), eating rice dumplings, the lion dance, and the dragon dance.

Dragon Boat Festival falls on month 5 day 5 of the Chinese lunar calendar (around mid-June). During this traditional festival in China, people customarily eat rice dumplings. The Dragon Boat Festival dates all the way back to the Warring States Period of the Zhou Dynasty. Legend has it that a famous poet named Qu Yuan killed himself on this day by jumping into a river when he learned that his homeland had been conquered. A dragon boat is a boat that is shaped like a dragon and has a costume dragon in it and it has drummers and someone steering and is typically used in a chinese festival. This festival takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Traditions on this day include dragon boat racing, eating rice dumplings called zongzi, and wearing a perfume pouch to ward off evil spirits.

Costumes and props Dragons are a commonly used costume in chinese new year because of the dragon dance. The dragon dance is is a form of traditional dance and performance in Chinese culture. It is most often seen in festive celebrations. The dance is performed by a team of experienced dancers who manipulate a long flexible figure of a dragon using poles positioned at regular intervals along the length of the dragon. The dance team simulates the imagined movements of this river spirit in a sinuous, undulating manner.

They also often use lion costumes in chinese new year because it is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. The lion dance is usually performed during the Chinese New Year and other Chinese traditional, cultural and religious festivals. It may also be performed at important occasions such as business opening events, special celebrations or wedding ceremonies, or may be used to honour special guests by the Chinese communities.

In the Dragon Boat Festival they do a dragon boat race that is approximately 1,500 feet long. In the Chinese new year and the lantern festival they play the drums. In the Chinese new year and the lantern festival They dress up as dragons because it is a religious thing. In the Lantern festival they throw lanterns up in the sky and they seem as if they can fly and it fills the sky!

    The lantern festival

Food Vegetables are commonly used in chinese cultural festivals because they sound like “money” in chinese language. People in northern China typically will eat dumplings (jiaozi) on New Year's Eve. This occurs because 'jiaozi' sounds like a word meaning 'bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new.' in Chinese.

Dumplings are always made before midnight and eaten during the last hour of the old year and the first hour of the Lunar New Year. Some people like to wrap a one-yuan, fifty-cent or ten-cent coin in some of the dumplings, as a token of good fortune for those who eat them. This is said to ensure good luck and prosperity in the New Year.

Southern China produces rice, so traditionally the southern Chinese usually eat Niangao (rice cakes) to celebrate the New Year. This belief derives from the Chinese pronunciation of rice cake as 'niangao', a homophone for a word meaning a higher level of life. Niangao is made of glutinous rice powder and can be cooked by frying, steaming, stir-frying or boiling. With the development of the social culture, eating Niangao is also popular now among some people in north China during the Chinese New Year.

Fish, usually of a local variety, is an important item on the dinning table of thousands of families on the eve of the Chinese New Year. Fish is pronounced 'yu' in Chinese, with the implications of having more than just a basic need each year. It is also a present exchanged between relatives and friends during the Chinese New Year. In southern China, some people just eat the middle part of the fish on the New Year Eve, leaving the head and tail until the next day to symbolize completeness. Meanwhile, it is particularly important that when fish is placed on the dining table, its head must be at the elders, as a sign of respect.

    Conclusion

Hopefully now you know about how important festivals are to the chinese people. Also the festivals aren’t something you want to miss.

@Phantom09754YT: The goal of Wikipedia is to write encyclopedia articles, not to promote yourself or your YouTube channel. I see that your recent edits have been reverted. As part of the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, you can start a discussion on the article talk page, such as Talk:Chinese New Year, to discuss your ideas to improve the articles as well as provide reliable sources, to help build consensus on improving the articles. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:52, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As GoingBatty points out, Wikipedia already has an article on Chinese New Year. And it avoids (and will delete) additional articles on any given subject: See Wikipedia:Content forking. ¶ Additionally, you have to write with a high signal to noise ratio. Sample:
"What is Chinese new year? Chinese new year is a celebration where they celebrate, you guessed it, new year. In chinese new year they celebrate with costume dragons and instruments."
    This says nothing more than
"Chinese new year is celebrated with costume dragons and instruments."
And no, please do not attempt to promote your Youtube channel. Attempts will be deleted. -- Hoary (talk) 05:16, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In this series of edits you added awards to the page about somebody. Princepratap1234 removed mention of them as "unnotable". I don't claim to know anything about them (though I do know that there are many awards and that most aren't notable). If these are notable, perhaps you could create articles about them. Reliably sourced articles, of course. This would demonstrate notability. -- Hoary (talk) 09:55, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A very active user, called Ontzak, with privileges over me, is going to delete again a page about a legal political party in Puerto Rico, called "Movimiento de Reunificación de Puerto Rico con España", which I had recently restored. I found today, May 22nd 2020, that this page had been deleted previously by another user called Antur arguing the reason A4, irrelevant article. Then, I just restored the page arguing that the page wasn't irrelevant as my sole action proves, but then again, the user Ontzak, which appearently happens to be an antispanish basque secessionist, has claim criterion G9 to delete again the page of this legal political party because, according to Ontzak, this page doesn't meet the minimal criteria to stay in Wikipedia. I would like to know which are those criteria as I find both actions of deletion to be motivated by ideological reasons. I would like some impartial administrator to read this and, if case, reduce privileges to these users which, in my opinion are abusing of their rights and are distorting the impartiality of Wikipedia. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Himno Anonimo (talkcontribs) 09:58, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Himno Anonimo Your edit history indicates no edits to any such article(perhaps your edits were to the Spanish Wikipedia, a different project?)- but the mere existence of any organization does not merit that organization a Wikipedia article, it must meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable organization, as shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources. 331dot (talk) 10:10, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If your edits were to the Spanish Wikipedia, you will have to resolve this dispute there, using whatever processes they have for doing so. 331dot (talk) 10:11, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
user:Ontzak is also mainly active on Spanish Wikipedia, and has very little English Wikipedia history, so that's probably a good guess. Meters (talk) 10:14, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
enwiki does not have a current deletion criterion A4, and criterion G9 is rarely used, so it does seem likely that this refers to eswiki, not to enwiki. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:18, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Kennedy of Knocknalling Genealogy

I have a copy of a genealogy published in 1883 titled Kennedy, Knocknalling Branch, 1142-1083. It was prepared by J Douglas Kennedy, Scarthwaite, Lancaster, 1884 It is about 30 pages long. Is this something suitable for Wikipedia and if it is, how would it be added?

    Jerry2318 (talk) 10:43, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jerry2318 If you are asking if you want to put the text of this publication on Wikipedia, the answer is no- Wikipedia is not for posting sources themselves. 331dot (talk) 12:21, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jerry2318, and if you're asking about using it as a source, Wikipedia doesn't normally concern itself with genealogies. -- Hoary (talk) 12:23, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jerry2318: it's possible that you could upload it to Wikisource: I don't know what their criteria are for accepting material. --ColinFine (talk) 12:48, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jerry2318: You can add it at Wikisource. As a separate issue, the next question is whether or not it constitutes a "reliable source" that you can cite at Wikipedia. A work of this type if published today would be a "vanity" publication. At the time it was probably published "by subscription". Go on over to the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard to ask about this. My guess: you can cite it for facts but it does not help to establish notability. -Arch dude (talk) 14:20, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jerry2318: The actual process is to scan it and add it to Wikimedia Commons as a djvu file. Commons is used by all Wikisource and Wikipedia projects. After going to that effort, you can in theory then cite the commons file directly from Wikipedia articles, but a small amount of extra effort of adding it to Wikisource will make it much more usable. You would then cite the Wikisource instead of the djvu at Commons. -Arch dude (talk) 17:20, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why when I add or edit something does it disappear even though I’m documenting it??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhkyley5 (talkcontribs) 14:53, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your edits to Winthrop University, you changed the formatting of section titles to all caps, which goes against Wikipedia's Manual of Style and the change was therefore reverted and you added one person to the Alumni section for which no article exists and without providing a reliable source and this was also reverted, as there is no evidence of notability. Mikenorton (talk) 15:06, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have just reverted your addition of another person to the alumni for the same reasons. Mikenorton (talk) 15:09, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rhkyley5: There are multiple links to 'get you started' in the welcome message at your talk page; please study those carefully. Please note, lists of alumni etc. should only contain persons who are the subject of Wikipedia articles; I.e. are notable in the Wikipedia sense and should typically be supported by independent, reliable sources. Biographical articles such as the one you created for Paul Vicknair will not be accepted into the encyclopedia without sourcing. Eagleash (talk) 15:23, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What's the wikitext markup or template to place a link to an image page without displaying the image? Like, if you wanted to link to a fair-use image with a particularly good rationale on a talk page to demonstrate how to craft a fair-use rationale? Every way of linking it I can come up with then displays the image, which is a violation of fair use on a talk page. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:10, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Talk page of Tara Reade

There was an AfD for Tara Reade which decided to merge it into Joe Biden sexual assault allegation. Talk:Joe Biden sexual assault allegation now has a notice which says:

The contents of the Tara Reade page were merged into Joe Biden sexual assault allegation on 17 May 2020. For the contribution history and old versions of the redirected page, please see its history; for the discussion at that location, see its talk page.

However, Talk:Tara Reade redirects to this page, so it is unclear if any content from the talk page was lost. I'm not sure what should be done about this, but I think at least there should be a link to the Afd on a relevant talk page.—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 20:23, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Naddruf the Tara Reade article has been moved along with its talk to Draft:Tara Reade. Hopefully everything will be tidied up when the deletion review is concluded. TSventon (talk) 22:52, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Yes, but there is no link on either of those pages to the AfD for Tara Reade, or the deletion review (not to be confused with the AfDs for Joe Biden sexual assault allegation).—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 23:46, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Naddruf: Generally the best person to ask about an AfD close is the AfD closer, in this case Black Kite. If you ask them at Talk:Joe Biden sexual assault allegation you can include the links you are asking about. I would expect the merger notice to be corrected once the deletion review is concluded (and if it weren't corrected you could ask the deletion review closer). Hello. Could someone please let me know what the best place is to report a user who has multiple accounts? The user is not attempting to hide this fact, so I don't know whether WP:SPI is the right place or not. Cheers, 1292simon (talk) 23:08, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Find edits in history page by edit summary

Is there a tool that allows you to find edits in a history page by edit summary?--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 23:28, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SharabSalam: The best thing I can think of is to click the "View history" and then use your browser's find feature (e.g. CTRL-F in Google Chrome) to search the edit summaries. If that doesn't find the edit, you can click "500" to show the last 500 edits instead of the default 50 and try finding again. If that doesn't work, you can click "older 500" or change the number in the URL from "limit=500" to "limit=1000", and keep going from there. Happy hunting! Can’t create a WP book

Why is it that every time I start creating a new book and have added pages to it, whenever I come back the next day it is gone??? Yesterday at the top of my WP screen it showed the horizontal Book creator bar and displayed the link Show book (11 pages) but when I clicked on it today it displayed as Empty book and now shows it as (0 pages). What’s the deal? Can anybody help me with this please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KarlderGrosse843 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Go to that page, and in the the third header box is an option to re-edit the book in the "Book Creator". How can I propose the creation of pages

I want to create the pages of two organizations and a public figure but I don't know how to suggest it. @JazzShadow: I can't find any article with the words "Knowmad Institute". If you want to suggest someone else creates an article, you can try using Wikipedia:Requested articles. GoingBatty (talk) 01:16, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Requesting an article is usually a waste of time. So DIY! You don't seem to have edited before (or anyway under the name JazzShadow). Starting an article when you have no experience of improving other articles isn't an easy feat. Try improving and augmenting articles that already exist and that interest you. Then, when you've had some practice, embark on Draft:Knowmad Institute (if you can do so from reliable, independent sources). -- Hoary (talk) 01:20, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Reporting IP socks

What is the recommended course of action when finding an IP address that is highly suspicious of being a blocked user? WP:SOCK says "Logging out to make problematic edits as an IP address" may be a form of sockpuppetry, and WP:Blocking policy says "User accounts or IP addresses used to evade a block should also be blocked", but WP:SPI says "CheckUsers will not publicly connect an account with an IP address per the privacy policy except in extremely rare circumstances". I have in fact seen requests for SPI of IPs declined because of the privacy policy. So where should they be reported? Nardog (talk) 17:03, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You should still take this to SPI - if it's blatent and correct, the IP/IP range will also get a block for evasion.Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 17:09, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: Thanks. Is SPI still the venue if the last block (of the master or one of its socks) happened more than six months ago? Nardog (talk) 17:33, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nardog, yes. Although technical evidence will no longer likely be held, behavioural evidence can still be evaluated there, and it keeps a good record of if suspected socking has occurred. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 20:24, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Alex Noble: Thanks, but I'm still not clear about when a block becomes "stale". Let's say a user was indef-blocked years ago but kept contributing as IPs all the while until recently, should I report them or would that be considered a clean start? Nardog (talk) 21:34, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nardog, Technically it doesn't. Blocks are usually indefinite, and clean starts aren't permitted where there are active bans, blocks or sanctions. In practice though, if a user blocked a long time ago has returned, and has clearly changed, I'd personally not shout about it; the point of blocks is to prevent damage, and if the user has really changed then this is now irrelevant.
But in these cases it would hard to find if sockpuppetry was occuring anyway. If a sockpuppet has been noticed as being a sock, they have probably been making the same mistakes they were banned for. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 21:47, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it necessary to provide a source for something that is its own source?

For example, if I were to write something like "On an episode of abcde shown on channel 54321, which aired on 1 Jan 2020, Smith said he did not like apples", I can't see why a citation would be needed, since the source would be "abcde, channel 54321 airing on 1 Jan 2020". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ncpwiki (talkcontribs) 21:18, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is such a template as {{cite episode}}, which should be used when implicitly citing a television show as the subject. However, Wikipedia summarises what reliable sources say about a subject. If no other sources talk about something, it's likely not pertinent. On the above, why is Wikipedia using this information? It seems like WP:INDISCRIMINATE information. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:37, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ncpwiki: You generally shouldn't have to write the "On an episode ... 1 Jan 2020" part; just "Smith says he does not like apples.<ref>{{Cite episode |...}}</ref>". If it's truly important to have the context of the exact episode info in the prose, then yes, you would duplicate the information (though probably in a different format in the prose than the what the {{Cite episode}} produces). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 22:57, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ncpwiki: Please see WP:PRIMARY. Primary sources are to be used sparingly. This includes interviews. Technically, your in-text full reference to your source fulfills Wikipedia policy, but our convention, built up over the course of the last 19 years, is to use the word "source" to mean something that uses the <ref>...</ref> syntax. Failure to follow this convention just makes work for our poor volunteer editors. Also, in the future some brave soul may want to create tools that extract sources from the wikitext. These tools would miss your in-text source. -Arch dude (talk) 23:54, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

His obit in the Washington Post discovered the truth behind his actual identity, he was not Cuban or Latino or an immigrant:

The Wikipedia article is not a fraud. It accurately presents what reliable sources said. His story is a fraud. The Washington Post story that corrects his backstory appears to have broken less than three hours ago. Someone will update the article now that we're aware, or WP:SOFIXIT yourself. Requested rewrite on article's talk page, which is where this should be to find knowledgeable editors on this subject. Meters (talk) 23:51, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Television shows by topic

I notice that there are two categories Category:Television series by topic and Category:Television programs by topic. "Television series by topic" is a subcategory of "Television programs by topic". Does anyone know the difference between the two categories? When I clicked to edit the talk page, it said I should ask here since not many people watch category talk pages. I suppose television programs can include documentaries and specials, where television series includes series of episodes, but this isn't really clear. Some of the categories that are in "Television programs by topic" but not "Television series by topic" still include episodic television series. Should the categories be merged or renamed to clarify the difference? Nine hundred ninety-nine (talk) 01:36, 24 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Question re interwiki linking

Hi. I am trying to learn about linking to other wikis. I seem to be going a bit in circles. I did find this page: Help:Interwiki linking, I still have some questions though.

    • If I want to link to the Spanish-language Wikipedia, I do understand that the prefix to do so is this prefix: [[es:]]. however, I want to find out if there is a list somewhere of the prefixes that would be used for each wikipedia in a different language. could you please tell me if such a list exists?

Please ping me when you reply. thanks.

    Deceased wikipedians

How does wikipedia know their editor has died? I saw so many pages with candles on it, indicating there are dead. Inactive accounts will automatically mark as dead? Do they contact their families of editors? Ram nareshji (talk) 02:40, 24 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
