ArbCom 2019 special circular
Administrators must secure their accounts
The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:40, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Commons linking
@Howcheng: I'm getting ready to move User:Maile66/Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area to Main Space. If I do a Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area search on Commons, it comes up with 144 images. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:MediaSearch&search=Merrimac+Farm+Wildlife+Management+Area&fulltext=Search&type=image
However, there is no Commons category by that name to do a single link. Without editing each image category link, is there a way to easily amass these images under a new Commons category for Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area? — Maile (talk) 13:01, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- Not really. Your best bet is to use something like WP:AWB (if you are running Windows) so you can plow through all the images really quickly. —howcheng {chat} 18:23, 3 March 2022 (UTC).
- OK, thanks. I took care of it manually yesterday. Not too bad, just a lot of mouse clicking. — Maile (talk) 16:11, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Sixteenth anniversary on Wikipedia!
Happy First Edit Day! Hi Maile66! On behalf of the Birthday Committee, I'd like to wish you a very happy 16th anniversary of the day you made your first edit and became a Wikipedian! Replaceable fair use File:Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement cover.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Bambi vs Godzilla - G12
Hi there. I see you recently deleted Bambi vs. Godzilla as a G12 - this has left various missing redirects that need to be cleaned up. Before starting, I'd like to confirm that the deleted article was not about David Mamet's book. If it was, then I'd like to make an attempt at recovering something from it, but speedy deletions aren't eligible for WP:REFUND. If it wasn't, then I'll recreate the original redirect to Mamet's article and flag it as "with possibilities" as it was previously. Tevildo (talk) 20:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- FYI, it was listed at Candidates for Deletion. For your convenience, I have undeleted my action for you: Bambi vs. Godzilla The first sentence says, "Bambi vs. Godzilla: On the Nature, Purpose, and Practice of the Movie Business was a book written by playwright David Mamet and published by Vintage Books in February 2008." — Maile (talk) 20:59, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! I think the article, as it stood before deletion, is better off as a paragraph under David Mamet#Books, with the redirects restored to that section. If more material about the book becomes available, a split can be proposed. Unless there's any obvious reason against this course of action, I'll make a start on it tomorrow. Tevildo (talk) 21:15, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for following up here on my talk page. My deletions come from tagged and nominated listings at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. I don't independently decide what gets deleted. Only the nominator really knows why they tagged something. If it turns out someone disagrees that something shouldn't have been deleted, I'm always wiling to revert my actions. Let me know anytime. — Maile (talk) 21:28, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Hi Maile66. I noticed that you deleted a redirect left from a disruptive move to NTT (disambigation) per WP:G7, which isn't in accordance with this criterion: For redirects created as a result of a page move, the mover must also have been the only substantive contributor to the pages before the move.
Unfortunately, I was also cheated and requested a WP:G14 nomination of NTT (disambiguation). Could you restore all the revisions before its deletion? Thanks, NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 01:27, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- This one is a little confusing to me. I just reverted my delete. Did this work for you? If not, please advise how I shoud do it. — Maile (talk) 01:38, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't state it clearly. I was asking for deleting NTT (disambiguation) and restoring all the revisions before its first deletion. NTT (disambigation) should have been reverted to NTT without leaving a redirect at the first time because of the misspelling "disambigation" in its title. NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 02:09, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- There's probably a way to easily do this. But I don't want to botch it for you, so I've left a message at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Delete-Undelete assistance requested. — Maile (talk) 03:06, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

- Go for it. It's a wonderful idea. I no longer have access to the sources I used to create this article. But please feel free to take any of these articles up to GA, — Maile (talk) 10:58, 7 April 2024 (UTC)
- FYI regarding my access to sourcing - It's primarily the via Newspapers.com and maybe one or two other subscription-only sources I no longer have access to.
- I was just looking at the Bina Mossman article, and I most definitely do have access to a lot of those sources, because they are available without subscription. How about starting off with Bina? — Maile (talk) 00:03, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- I've done some tidying up up on Anna Kahanamoku, and I think her article is probably ready to be offered at GAC. — Maile (talk) 16:38, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- Elsie Hart Wilcox - just finished going over her article. This one would be the cream of the crop for GAC, compared to the other two. Because it is so extensive, there will likely be a detailed GAC review. I've done what I can, but suggest you, or others, go over this again before nominating it at GAC. — Maile (talk) 22:09, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- You're amazing! Life has been getting in the way of editing quite a bit lately, but I'll take a look at all three and see what we see! — ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 23:01, 12 April 2024 (UTC)

- You are welcome to look through my edits of anything, as far as I'm concerned. I have no idea what you are getting at here. But there have been a lot of AFDs ... just within the last 12 months. The thing about AFD is, like all of Wikipedia, anybody can join in, regardless if they know WP's complicated, and often conflicting, guidelines on anythig and anybody. And you can often find a WP guideline to justify any direction of something. — Maile (talk) 16:18, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- Just joking, my friend--but I'm glad I saw that Hofstra thing. You run into these old things and you wonder how they got written up in the first place, and how they managed to stay around. How long do you think our project will last? Drmies (talk) 16:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- The overall Wikipedia project? I believe it will out-live me. Judging from the Deceased Wikipedians/2024, Jimbo Wales dreamed up a doozie of international connections when he created Wikipedia. We all have become an international family. — Maile (talk) 20:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

Page for Review - A Question
Hello User:Maile66,
I need some guidance or help. I have contributed to this namespace,
Shmuel Rosenman for a little while when time permits. I have been interested in researching this subject's life. I cannot see it in a Google search like the other pages I have created or contributed.
I noticed you reviewed a page just the other day that I was working on, Sandy White Hawk.
Do you know how to get the Shmuel Rosenman page listed in a search? I would love to learn.
Thank you for your help, 8barzmusic (talk) 17:02, 13 April 2024 (UTC)8barzmusic
- Not entirely sure what you are asking me, but maybe you don't mean Google. I have the feeling you might be talking about Newpages, which is strictly Wikipedia. It's automatic that when a new Wikipedia article is created, it shows up automatically on that list, and Wikipedia editors can review what shows up there. Beyond that, I have no idea how Google lists things. — Maile (talk) 17:42, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
Page Review Question
Greetings,
I was wondering how I could get a page reviewed. I noticed you reviewed a page I created recently. would you be able to help me find where to request a page review for Kathryn Fort, or find out if it has been reviewed?
Thank you, --8barzmusic (talk) 16:53, 17 April 2024 (UTC)8barzmusic
- The prior article was just a random pick from the Newpages listings. Also, the Newpages reviews are not necessarily a full review. It really depends on which project the subject matter is. I would encourage you to ask questions about Kathryn Fort at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red. They can be pretty helpful with advice and guidance. For leanning the ropes, and getting reviews, it's helpful to be part of a project such as Women in Red. You might want to join up with that project. — Maile (talk) 18:14, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – May 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2024).
- Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including creating a discussion-only period (3b) and administrator elections (13) on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating a reminder of civility norms (2), will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Proposals passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II, after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report.
- Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Wikipedia. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
- The arbitration case Conflict of interest management has been closed.
- This may be a good time to reach out to potential nominees to ask if they would consider an RfA.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 15,000 articles awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!

Recent changes
- The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [1]
- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [2][3]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [4][5]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
