Orphaned non-free media (File:Mothman.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Mothman.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:03, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for File:Mothman.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Mothman.jpg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. PhilKnight (talk) 14:58, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I for one think your fair-use rational is very convincing. I wouldn't want to come face to face with Mothman itself. --Mblumber (talk) 19:44, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikis Take Manhattan 3 co-coordinators

I know I couldn't make it for the March 29, 2009 meet. I have the interest of being co-coordinator with you on the next Wikis Take Manhattan, to help put lists and everything together. I also want to put more of a transportation trend in this years. I have some other ideas too. Reply when you can.Mitchazenia :  Chat  Trained for the pen 12:55, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hey, did you get to see the post above. I am really interested. :) - And possibly starting work on Wikimedia Takes the Jersey Shore, which would be fun.Mitchazenia :  Chat  Trained for the pen 00:58, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Think we should probably give the competitors more sources of information to use in the competition, because some people might get lost. Another idea would be to probably let people take more than 1 image and the card. I mean, for all we know, people might do things better on pic 3 or 4. As well, I do want to let people feel a little more free to go farther via car. (May I suggest Nassau County?) Also, I would suggest would be starting the competition at 10.Mitchazenia :  Chat  Trained for the pen 22:38, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding an article having to do with China/North Korea

Hello there. I found you by looking through the list of admins from Wikipedia:WikiProject International relations and thought I should run this by you...

I came across Missile issues in East Asia, and thought you'd might want to take a look at it. Personally, I think it's an unnecessary article, as 90% of it is straight from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty article, while the rest just basically says "North Korea and China are pointing missiles at US allies in the Far East." INF did not involve China or North Korea at all, did it not? If I'm wrong, the article fails to inform me how the INF treaty fits into all of this. To me, it also seems as if it is a veiled form of objective protest.

Seeing as how I'm not knowledgeable enough on this subject to know whether or not to give it PROD tag or suggest merging it with other related articles, etc., I figure I'd best let you look at it at decide the best course of action. At the very least, it deserves a cleanup tag of sorts, as it is very poorly written. Happy editing. - SoSaysChappy (talk) 16:06, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New image project

Hi. This little form letter is just a courtesy notice to let you know that a proposal to merge the projects Wikipedia:WikiProject Free images, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use, Wikipedia:WikiProject Moving free images to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia:WikiProject Illustration into the newly formed Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media has met with general support at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Files. Since you're on the rosters of membership in at least one of those projects, I thought you might be interested. Conversation about redirecting those projects is located here. Please participate in that discussion if you have any interest, and if you still have interest in achieving the goals of the original project, we'd love to have you join in. If you aren't interested in either the conversation or the project, please pardon the interruption. :) Thanks. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:23, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Location change (and reservations made) for DC meetup

I stopped by TGI Friday's this evening and was less than impressed. They apparently don't take reservations, except perhaps if you call 24 hours ahead of time. The staff was not so helpful, and the menu has hardly anything vegetarian which is an issue for some people.

So, I checked out the Bertucci's pizza/Italian place across the street (21st & I St NW). Their staff couldn't have been more helpful, and think it will be fairly quiet so we will be able to hear each other. So, reservations are made for Bertucci's at 5pm on Saturday. --Aude (talk) 02:37, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of block on 65.88.88.175

Regarding your comment that the block on this IP address has been removed because alternative measures had been taken: well, they aren't working. Twice today, deletions he made at Arihant class submarine have been reverted, and he left this comment at the talk page, which makes it clear that we're still dealing with the same person: [1]. —Largo Plazo (talk) 16:22, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User:65.88.88.175 is vandalising again

User:65.88.88.175 was reported for deletion of sections and vandalism. I was about to block the user, when I saw that you lifted the block early, citing some arrangement. I will be blocking the address for a short period (a few hours) as it is possible that it might just be someone using their computers briefly. However, I thought you ought to be aware. Stephen! Coming... 16:38, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Briefly? It's the same person vandalizing and/or pushing a point of view on some topic related to India or South Asian peoples who has been blocked on several NYPL IP addresses for as much as a month or more over the last year or more (at least, as long as I've been dealing with him). He completely ignores warnings and blocks, never responding to them. Three hours is nothing. This is a recalcitrant case.—Largo Plazo (talk) 17:36, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please see User talk:Master of Puppets#User talk:65.88.88.175. We have to remember that we are blocking not one person but many potential users at a major library that we are cooperating with and actively trying to recruit new users with through the meta:Wikimedia New York City#Wikipedia at the Library project. In a case like this, I think maybe short blocks and semi-protection of a couple of these articles will deal with this problem better, without the major collateral damage that extended blocks of an entire library would cause. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 11:34, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Granting all the reasons for being cautious, then why bother blocking at all? It isn't worth the effort, since the experience of over a year now shows that it clearly isn't making the minutest dent into his disruptive activities.
As for the cooperative effort with the library, note that that notwithstanding, there has been but a single anonymous edit from this IP address in the past year that was by someone other than this offender. Further, it is hardly outlandish to expect that serious contributors engaged in a formal project would create accounts for themselves even in the absence of a block. So I don't see appreciable harm coming from a very long-term anonymous-only block on this IP address. —Largo Plazo (talk) 14:51, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question about blocks

Hi, Pharos. Sorry I couldn't make it to the last Meetup, but I was photographing at the Brooklyn Book Festival, as you can see here.

Recently, I was told that it was inappropriate for an admin to protect a page or block someone regarding edits to an article that the admin has edited, even if it's unambiguous vandalism, rather than a policy-based content dispute.

User 166.127.1.224 needs to be blocked for this edit, as he already has a litany of warnings, including a final one, on his Talk Page. Do I really have to abstain from doing so myself, and ask someone else to do it for me, simply because I've edited the Spike Lee article in the past? Nightscream (talk) 23:27, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Found another one: this edit by this editor. He was last blocked for six months in February, and is now back to vandalism. Nightscream (talk) 23:36, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WTM pictures?

Hey. I saw the WTM invitation, but I won't really be able to make it. Having said that, I saw the Goals page, and there are two pictures on there that I can help out with: the Greenpoint Ave G and the Court Square G. I could have those pictures on Commons tomorrow night or the day after. Is it okay for me to take those pictures and add them, or should I leave it alone so someone else can take it for the event? — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 13:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When you go for the TOPP meeting tonight

Give me till tomorrow to finalize the list. I will have 104 in the high rate ones, 52 in the smaller ones (Canal-59th, and the 4 other boroughs), and 26 in the far outlying regions (Jersey, Nassau and Westchester). I was going to have the 52 set to go for 42-59 when a Wikimedia Error erased the last 20, so I'll readd those at home.Mitch32(The Password is... See here!) 17:36, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re this

OK, but Anguel and I will be taking some of those anyway ... (Our plan this year is to drive to Marble Hill and take the subway down so we can go back up after signing in and clean out the Bronx via car). Daniel Case (talk) 02:36, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

U Thant Island

This article from the Philadelphia Inquirer here is likely to have escaped your attention. The accompanying photographs are relevant in terms of the article you created -- especially number 2 of 6. As you can see for yourself, the Louis Kahn-designed memorial which intends to honor Franklin Roosevelt will achieve an unanticipated consequence.

The granite "room" to be built at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island will succeed in directing visitors' attention towards U Thant Island while blocking the panoramic view of Manhattan and the United Nations. --Tenmei (talk) 18:52, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Opine for User:Fg2

You contributed to the Signpost Tip Room's discussion of Fg2's death. Several editors have decided to collaborate to get one of his favorite articles to FA status. Would you care to opine on which article we should select here? Thanks. - Draeco (talk) 04:21, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edwin D. Cruz Imaginary MMA Fighter and Vandalism??

This person has vandalized several MMA pages. If you look at this person's page, they appear to be imaginary. There are several links used as references that are either dead links or have nothing to do with Edwin D. Cruz. I figure you know better than I what to do about this.--Qwertasdfgzx (talk) 19:28, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Geonotice?

Please investigate into this and by the way what is Geonotice? Saqib talk 10:04, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there is no way I can think of to determine who may or may not have attended a meetup in Hyderabad. Wikipedia:Geonotice is a tool which puts a notice on the watchlist of users in a particular geographical area, based on their IP address; I have activated a geonotice to advertise the meetup in the area around Karachi.--Pharos (talk) 12:35, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incorporating WTM photos

Are the photos from WTM available to be added to articles? If so, where can I find them? JamesMLane t c 18:59, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP Meetups

I see most of the Wikimedian meetups around the world are just like casual get to gatherings with informal chit chat. Don't you think we should chamge that culture? Wikipedia Loves Art

Hi Pharos, hope things are well with you. How are things going with uploading the WLA images from Flickr to Commons? Do you want a hand carrying out the transfer? I've started working on code for Britain Loves Wikipedia, and I've put together some prototype code that transfers images from Flickr to Commons - it should be fairly easy to go from there to having a full pipeline. If you're in the final stages of polishing off your own code to do this, though, then there's no point in me duplicating your work. Mike Peel (talk) 17:39, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, never mind: I'll ask you about this in person next week... ;-) Mike Peel (talk) 00:32, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited!

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia at the Library and Wikipedia Loves Landmarks, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, for example particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements (see the September meeting's minutes).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

My Photos of NYC

I have over 3,500 photos (hard copy) of NYC taken by myself in 2001-2003 using a Cannon EOS camera. The photos were taken using the AAIA Guide to NYC for the choice the sites to be photographed. I would like to digitalize my photos and upload them to Wikipedia. I need to buy a scanner, which make and model scanner would you recommend that I purchase? Since my photos were taken according to the exact sequence of AAIA guide, is there a potential copyright violation? Also, I will not under any circumstances loan the photos or negatives to another party, they must remain in my possession at all times.--Woogie10w (talk) 11:51, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commoners takes Pakistan

Hi Pharos, In my effort to introduce Wikimedia and promote Free content culture in Pakistan (where it is merely available with some local bloggers). I'm going to introduce a free web-based project similar to commons:Commons:Photo scavenger hunts in our next Karachi meetup. The purpose of such project to maximize the attention of internet community in Pakistan toward free content. We'll ask amateur and pro photographers to contribute their work (which is mostly related to current events or latest happening/events around) in our project only if they want to release it with free licenses. The same can also be used in Wikimedia's projects, wherever need. I hope the initiative would work fantastic particularly for introducing Wikimedia and free content culture in Pakistan. It would be great if you've any idea or suggestion on this? Thank you --Saqib talk 08:50, 10 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Saqib Qayyum (talkcontribs) [reply]
