Orphaned non-free media (Image:Chang.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Chang.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:44, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Kalimpong FARC

Nice to see you back. Yes, I saw book references in the article below but I think they would hold true even now. So need not worry about them. For some information which was very hard to find elsewhere I found it on Gorkhapedia. I had opened a thread on WT:IND asking about Gorkhapedia. I think we can pick some non-controvertial information from there too. We will try our best. --GPPande talk! 07:37, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GAN

Hi Dwaipayanc - How's everything? I know you are on break but I thought I'd let you know that I've nominated Chak De India for WP:GAN. To do so, I had to significantly reduce the plot which was about 1000 words over the normal limit of 900 words. I think that this is potentially both a GA and FA article. -Classicfilms (talk) 20:08, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All is well, just going back to some articles that seem to have potential. I understand about time, no pressure...When you do have a moment, if you could tell me what the lead needs to make it stronger, I would appreciate it. Good to hear from you, -Classicfilms (talk) 21:23, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!! Let me think about these point and I'll let you know when I've revised the intro. -Classicfilms (talk) 21:52, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More on Chak De

I re-wrote the lead. When you have a free moment, could you take a look? Make any changes that you feel are necessary or let me know on my talk page what can be improved. Thanks so much, -Classicfilms (talk) 01:45, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I made the changes. Take a look and let me know what you think. Also, the article is seriously in need of free images but I can't seem to find any - not even of SRK. If you have thoughts or ideas, let me know. -Classicfilms (talk) 02:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Barnstar
A long overdue Barnstar for the many hours of advice and tips you have given towards the improvement of Bollywood articles. Much appreciated Dwaipayanc! - Classicfilms (talk) 16:23, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images etc.

You're welcome!! The barnstar is long overdue and well deserved...

Thanks for the tip about images. Perhaps I can ask you, when you have a chance, to upload the images to the commons? I don't mind doing all of the tweaks etc. to the article (and I really appreciate your help in this area...) but it would be great to have the help of other editors in terms of uploading images - thanks for the tip though about IndiaFM, that is very helpful to know about. I did add a few free images to the article, which are somewhat related to the topic though not the best - it would be great to see more Bollywood film project editors work on the article in such areas as images and adding further information... Though I know you are technically on break at the moment so any help you can give is appreciated!! Thanks, -Classicfilms (talk) 22:44, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chak De India is now GA

Hi Dwai - Good news, Chak De India is now a GA. Thanks for your help!-Classicfilms (talk) 23:45, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Actually, you did help quite a bit. Two thoughts - the first is that eventually I'd like to see Chak De move to FAC but I think it will need a fresh set of eyes - I'm sure there is more that we could add but I'd need a new perspective. The other - I'd like to see Taare Zameen Par go for GAN next but it still needs a lot of work - more could be added, the large quotes integrated and so forth. It's a wonderful and quite unique film (from what I can tell, the only feature film with the issue of dyslexia as the main theme rather than as one of many subplots) which makes innovative use of CG. Not being nominated for an Oscar shouldn't really determine the fate of this film and I think that with a little bit of help from other Wikipedians, it could grow into a fine article. I think that's it for now. -Classicfilms (talk) 02:16, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to add that I also thinkParineeta (2005 film) is a good candidate to push towards FAC. -Classicfilms (talk) 03:22, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Progress report: Country outlines

Development has been slow but continuous:

Penubag has done a fantastic job on the images for the awards we'll be using for our project's collaborations and contests. We now have 3 awards: a medal, a trophy, and a race ribbon. They all look tight. The trophy needs a small adjustment, but other than that, all 3 award images are complete and ready to use to create awards with.

Spartaz has warned us of (threatened to take) G4 (speedy delete) action if we run a competition that resembles the previously deleted Awards Center page. So whatever we do, any contests we run must differ substantially from the methods used there.

One type of competition I've been exploring is edit racing. I'm in the process of working the bugs out of this concept - the first race didn't work as expected - you see, because we only had an award for first place, the opponent didn't think it worthwhile to continue once it was clear who the winner would be. And since editors are in different time zones and usually need to start the race at different times, we need to base winning on personal start times - he who completes his assigned edits in the least time (rather than first), wins. And last but not least is quality control. What good is winning if your edits are ripe with errors? So I'll be exploring possibilities such as using a referee (whoever is overseeing a particular race), having participants watching each other for errors to knock them back, etc. I'm not sure yet.

Rich Farmbrough has been applying his bot expertise to filling in blanks in the country outlines (the population and area entries). I'm amazed at the number of edits he pumps out each day on a myriad of projects - ours makes up but a small time slice of his activity, and yet he has saved us many hours of manual work. Perhaps we should look into how he gets so much done.  :)

Zlerman has chosen to work on one outline at a time, and is taking on Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. He also has been keen on noticing and reporting design issues pertaining to the whole set of country outlines. Keep up the good work!

Highfields has been filling in the names of capitals, and is our first race winner. Check out the award on his user pages.

As you probably know, this project has expanded to include working on any and all sets of pages that are linked to from the country outlines. Once the set of country outlines go live (in article space), traffic will likely increase for all the links included on them. The quality and usefulness of those pages will reflect heavily on the country outlines (the outlines, which are essentially lists of links, are only as good as the links they present), and therefore we've branched out to solve the biggest problems with those as well. So far, we've taken on:

  • The creation of disambiguation pages for country adjectivals ("German", "French", "Taiwanese", etc. About half done.)
  • The clean-up of the CIA World Factbook statistics on the "demographics of" country pages. We've been renaming those sections to provide a key string that AWB can use for targetting (for skipping and filtering). Once that's done, we'll be able to break the clean-up down into simple AWB search/replace tasks, because we'll be able to target just those pages that include the CIA stuff.
  • Renaming the "Cuisine of" articles to their adjectival forms ("Chinese cuisine", "Italian cuisine", etc.)

Blackadam2 and Thehelpfulone have been helping out with the "demographics of" pages mentioned above.

And we have a couple speed addicts (addicted to wiki-velocity, not drugs)...

Both Robert Skyhawk and Thehelpfulone prefer (and excel at) simple AWB search/replaces. Robert hasn't actually joined our team yet, but he has been helping out quite a bit from the sidelines (via the WP:AWB/Tasks page. Unfortunately, there has recently been a non-AWB chore that has been holding things up on the AWB front - an edit to all the the headings which had to be reverted before too many new edits were made, because any new edits would make the reversion more difficult. The headings have been restored, so now the way is clear for AWB operations, and there are many search/replace tasks in the queue. AWB assignments have started again!

There's a similar bottleneck on the "Demographics of" pages (the "keying" mentioned above), but that's almost cleared too.  :)

With my internet access somewhat crippled, I've been finding it difficult to keep up with you guys. However, I expect to be accessing a Linky-capable workstation on a faster server (I'm on it right now, as you can probably tell from my contributions list for today), and so I should really pick up speed. Feels goooooood.  :)

Recruiting has been a bit slow (but steady), due in part to my crippled access, and because we've been waiting for the images for the awards to be completed. I expect the team to grow more rapidly as the bottlenecks are removed.

Well that's what's been happenin', and here's what's in the pipeline...

I'm about to begin work on a set of lists that corresponds to all the standard links on the country outlines, and these will be presented on the Topic outline of countries which will be organized exactly like the country outlines. Aside from being an extremely useful navigation aid, it will allow editors to easily see the state of country coverage on Wikipedia. I'll provide you with a link once I get up to speed on this.

In the meantime, keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Don't have much time unfortunatly. I had started working on a few projects before I left Wikipedia (like sourcing and expanding the Bollywood article, improving the Manisha Koirala one etc.) but had to leave it midway (at least until I have more time)
As of now, I don't really have time to go on a thorough article editing, and don't even have enough time to create a number of film articles (which is my favourite work on here), so I try to help out here and then, do some copyediting, source some articles, and fight vandals. I cannot afford do more than that at the moment :(

Thanks for uploading File:Chander pahar cover.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. the matter of farmers' suicide in India is quite touchy. Yet it takes care of much that is known in public about government policy as also the problems of farmers.

The article does seem to be balanced and does not, in my opinion, push any particular bias or partial agenda. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Upendrabaxi2004 (talkcontribs) 13:00, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Country outlines project update - 2009/03/08

Remember "Around the World"?

Well, we've been around the World, and around again (virtually speaking, on Wikipedia), on this project.

Things have been slowing down again, so it's time for a big push...

We've gone live

This project needed a shot in the arm. Also, its draft pages have been littering Wikipedia's categories for months. The time seemed right to move all the country outline drafts to article space.

WHAT???

Well, the drafts had been sitting in Wikipedia space for a year.

WHAT???

Development has been moving at a snail's pace and we could use the help of the Wikipedia community at large (who are more likely to find these if they are in article space).

WHAT???

Yes, we've gone live.  :)

This puts pressure on us to get the blatantly incomplete elements of these outlines done. The only glaring problem is the government branches sections. These need to be corrected ASAP.

I've mentioned THE GOVERNMENT BRANCHES SECTIONS many times to many people over the past year, but the problem just doesn't seem to have been taken seriously. So let me put it another way:

HELP!!! I need your help on this now. Almost all the countries have a government with an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. The links for these branches need to be completed for each country outline:

Here's a convenient list you can use WP:LINKY on to access and edit these quickly. Please copy the list's link to the top of your talk page so that you can access it easily.

If you spot any standardization in links, and ways we can automate parts of this process, or for groups of countries that have links in common, please let me know!

Administrative support for outlines

There has been growing pressure on me to write up the administrative pages for outlines - their instructions, guidelines, etc. Therefore, I'm now in the process of composing these. Fortunately, it is mostly a matter of gathering material from messages I've written to you guys over the past year. Still, this is taking up most of my time, and I will be buried in these for the foreseeable future.

Traffic control

The next big task after the government branches sections are cleaned up is link support for the outlines.

There's quite a list of links and notices that need to be put in place around Wikipedia, providing access to them to readers, and alerting editors to the need to develop and maintain these pages. This will keep our bot people very busy (and happy).

But the most important thing right now is to get the government branches sections completed. So please, put your bots aside, roll up your shirt sleeves, and start typing.

Thank you.

Thank you for your detailed post in the above topic, I have replied to the issues outlined, please have a read. Khokhar (talk) 23:55, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We seem to agree on a lot of whats been stated, however I have further clarified what would be a fairer and balanced view for the start of the article, to reply to a few of the issues raised.

A perceived ambiguity in explaining the word Direct action, which was probably referred to as 'hartal' by the lay people, would not be a fair reason on it's own to assume instigation. As for not controlling/directing mobs, as explained, it would not be reasonable to assume the police/military would stand by and do nothing, what was stated in the source ([17]), I quote "The League's rally at Ochterloney Monument on that day was considered as the 'largest ever Muslim assembly'. The Muslim League Chief Minister in his address reportedly assured the audience that the military and police had been 'restrained'", when not taken out of context, it seems quite clear the chief minister's comments were aimed at allowing the protest (as such large gathering are generally not allowed) to continue and should not be construed to mean 'let the violence continue'. The inflammatory propaganda, as already stated, was probably present on both sides and can not be taken as evidence against the Muslim league or it's leaders in general.

You also take a lot of sources from Bengal divided by Joya Chatterji ([18]), Though a lot of her work is sourced and clearly well thought out, I feel it is not entirely neutral and some of what is stated is her point of view, one such example being a chapter called and based on 'Hindu unity and Muslim Tyranny', neutral historians generally do not lead you into such pre-conceptions.

You state that "Hindu mobs did not START it, Muslims mobs did"

This seems to be the core of the argument for the Muslim league being responsible for 'instigating', as mentioned in the article, you admit that violence took place on both sides and some was prepared well in advance, however you go on to state that 'Muslim mobs did' start the violence, even IF this was true it does not implicate the Muslim league (as mentioned in the article), but as you have accepted, the Muslim league might have asked for a 'general strike' but they (the Muslim league in general) did not ask for violence.

As for whether 'Muslim mobs did', seeing as some preparations were made well in advance, as acknowledged by many sources including those you posted, and as stated in one of the earlier sources in the article ([19]) which sates, I quote "Acid bombs were manufactured and stored in Hindu-owned factories long before the outbreak. Calcutta's Hindu blacksmiths were mobilised to prepare spearheads and other weapons". It would be impossible to be certain if Muslims or Hindu's 'started' the violence, for all we know, it could have been a case of a group of Muslims, while peacefully protest marching, being attacked by 'acid bombs' and this could mean 'Hindus STARTED' the violence. However such a claim would be dubious and so it is fair to state both sides had prepared for violence in advance which got terribly out of control. Best wishes Khokhar (talk) 14:45, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did I forget to thank you? ..

Dwaipayanc ,Thank you for participating in my RfA, which passed nearly unanimously with 174 in support, 2 in opposition and 1 neutral votes. Special thanks goes to RegentsPark, Samir and John Carter for their kind nomination and support. I am truly honored by the trust and confidence that the community has placed in me. Article Recalcitrance have been nominated for deletion. It is an article which is about the experiences of Indians during the 1857 mutiny against British rule, by an author whose ancestors witnessed it. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for deletion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Recalcitrance (2nd nomination). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message.
