Heraklion International Airport, "Nikos Kazantzakis" (Greek: Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Ηρακλείου, "Νίκος Καζαντζάκης") or Nikos Kazantzàkis International Airport (IATA: HER, ICAO: LGIR) is the primary airport on the island of Crete, Greece. It is located about 5km from the main city of Heraklion, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos. The airport is named after Heraklion native Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek writer and philosopher. It is the country's second busiest airport after Athens International Airport.
History
The airport was opened in March 1939 and was served by the state owned line HEES with Ju-52 airplanes.
Area
Nikos Kazantzakis Airport is Crete's main and busiest airport, serving Heraklion (Ηράκλειο), Aghios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος), Malia (Mάλλια), Hersonissos (Χερσόνησος), Stalida (Σταλίδα), Elounda (Ελούντα) and other resorts.
There exists a plan to build a new airport at Kastelli Pediados.
Passenger Information
It is often requested by airlines that passengers do not take any photographs or video of the runway. This is because of a Hellenic Air Force base which operates at the airport.
