    Page Deletion

Hi, I was wondering if you cold help me?

I used to have a page on Wikipedia but it has been deleted. I have tried to contact the person who deleted it (Courcelles) by clicking on their 'talk' page but I'm afraid I can't see how to contact them from there and was wondering if you could help?

    Many thanks :- )

Can you tell us the name of the article? GB fan 04:10, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you go to User talk:Courcelles you can leave a message by clicking the "New section" link at the very top of the page. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:19, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks John. To be honest, I'm going to leave it tho. Not worth the hassle, Courcelles seems to be a serial deleter - — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.202.90.201 (talkcontribs) 19:08, 8 January 2012‎ (UTC)[reply]

You'll find that the deletion was discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David Grant (broadcaster); during that discussion nobody could find justification for keeping the article. You'll find the criteria for biographies of living people are at WP:BLP; if the subject's notability could be shown to be verifiable by references to reliable sources then the article could have remained. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Mass talk page mailing

Is there a mechanism to do a mass talk page mailing. Not every user on Wiki, don't worry. But I want to notify all the users on the WBFAN list of an RFC for FA elections. There is a category for all the users. And I can just open the list, import it to excell or word and make a tabbed list somehow. The list is by user page, but perhaps I can do a search and replace to make it talk pages. Still, how do I put out a mass mailing then? Or do I just have to slog through the thing manually?

    TCO (talk) 05:34, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    You could use AWB. Dismas|(talk) 06:10, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    False Warning from Bot

I've just received a warning from ClueBot NG telling me that my IP address vandalized the page First Aid (see here). According to the page's archive, someone added the words "stupid idiot raskal" to the end of a paragraph in this edit and I'm being held responsible for it. The only problem: I did not make that edit; I don't edit unless I'm logged in and no one else uses my computer. My ISP uses Dynamic IP addresses for clients, is this what is causing the problem? If so, how can I make sure this doesn't happen again? Wikiraj121 (talk) 06:38, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's because your ISP uses dynamic IP addressing. You can ignore the warnings while not logged in or ask for a static IP address from your ISP. Note however that your ISP may charge you for being assigned a static IP. Dismas|(talk) 07:57, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I was afraid of. If this happens again before I get my IP fixed, is my IP/userID going to get banned? Wikiraj121 (talk) 10:51, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If I remember correctly, and I think I do, as long as you're logged in, an IP block will not stop you from editing. Dismas|(talk) 10:54, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A block form has a field called "Prevent logged-in users from editing from this IP address", but it's unchecked by default and rarely used. Wikiraj121 shouldn't worry about it here. And like other blocks, such blocks can be appealed by affected users. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:57, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I hope that would only be used if the IP was proven to be static (never passed around). Otherwise, any logged in user who is using dynamic IPs could find themselves arbitrarily blocked for something someone else did months before, any day, any time. That's a boat load of nasty right there. fredgandt 13:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Read again Fred! If an IP vandalize WP, then admins are able to block IPs. Every IP then still able to login into an existing account and contribute to WP (or vandalize further), because the software differentiate between IPs and users. In rarely cases checkusers have to block also logged in users with the same IP (e.g. in universities). These accounts/users are then blocked to edit Wikipedia, but they can request an IP block exemption and - if granted - then they are able to edit WP! mabdul 14:06, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Prevent logged-in users from editing from this IP address" <--- I read it again! It still says the same thing. Thanks for the extra info. fredgandt 14:10, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And they said that it was unchecked by default and rarely used. I don't see your issue with Mabdul's first comment. Dismas|(talk) 20:02, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks, guys. Wikiraj121 (talk) 04:48, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

my page Plunkitt of Tammany Hall

Hello, I created the "Plunkitt of Tammany Hall" page on my own user page, as was suggested to me by you guys because if I'd just created an official one there would have been a chance that it could get deleted. I've put an overview of the page, an outline, and I've begun to fill in the outline. Now I'm curious what the process is for how my own "Plunkitt of Tammany Hall" page under my username gets to be a real page which can be seen by the public. Thank you for all of your efforts on my behalf. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonnaWelles (talkcontribs) 16:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When User:DonnaWelles/Plunkitt of Tammany Hall is ready to publish, you can move it to article space. I see your draft has no references yet; before moving to article space you will need to provide references to reliable sources — both to verify the content and to establish the notability of the subject. —teb728 t c 18:21, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You were given a number of useful links on your user talk page, but I guess you haven't looked at them yet, so your starting point is to read them. In particular, read WP:1st and WP:Tutorial, and also read about verifiability, reliable sources, and referencing. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:21, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For review: StarCore (software distributor) article

In some software history research I found it considerably difficult to find any information on the StarCore software distribution/publishing group and no mention whatsoever on Wikipedia. I've gathered most of my research and have put together what I feel would be an initial version at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/StarCore and would love a review. I feel it fills an important gap, is related to a notable company, has significant published works, and, from looking at other software developer & publisher articles, is appropriately constructed, but I'd love feedback as to any improvements I should make to get it ready for submission.

Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Linetrace (talkcontribs) 16:42, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you are asking about add content translated from an article on Bengali Wikipedia to an article on English Wikipedia, you do it the same as adding any other content, except the you add a note to talk page attributing to the Bengali article, as described in WP:Translation.
If you are asking about linking to an article on Bengali Wikipedia, that is described in Help:Interlanguage links. —teb728 t c 17:33, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please restore missing text to Wikipedia page for Deroy Murdock

    Dear Wikipedia:

    Happy New Year!

I just checked my Wikpedia page here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deroy_Murdock

It has a significant amount of text missing. The relevant passage now reads like this:

    --

He said on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" on September 16, 2007 that he believes Saddam Hussein was involved in perpetrating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on America. Murdock cited Smith v. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan., 262 F. Supp. 2d 217,[5] a federal case heard by U.S. District Judge Harold Baer, Jr.. Murdock details this case, and presents extensive additional evidence of Saddam Hussein's philanthropy of terror on a webpage he developed called HUSSEINandTERROR.com.[6]

    --

The following text has been deleted and should be restored:

    --

In Smith v. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Judge Baer ruled that Hussein's Baathist government and the Taliban assisted Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. Judge Baer -- who President Clinton nominated in April 1994 -- ordered Hussein, Iraq's former government, and this case's other losing parties to pay $104 million in civil damages to the families of George Eric Smith and Timothy Soulas, both murdered on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center. Judge Baer added: "Again, since the al-Qaeda defendants and Iraq are jointly and severally liable, they are all responsible for the payment of any judgment that may be entered."

    --

I would suggest that the full passage should read as follows:

District Judge Harold Baer, Jr. In Smith v. Murdock details this case, and presents extensive additional evidence of Saddam Hussein's philanthropy of terror on a webpage he developed called HUSSEINandTERROR.com.[6]

    --

I discovered about 30 minutes ago that my separate website on this topic, HusseinAndTerror.com, has been vandalized very badly. It could be that the same culprit of that attack -- presumably someone who disagrees with me on this topic -- has chopped this supportive text out of my Wikipedia page. Rather than simply debate Saddam Hussein's role (or non-role) in the September 11 attacks, some people prefer to delete from the record arguments and evidence supporting his culpability. Such censorship is vile and despicable.

Would you please restore this text and police my Wikipedia page to assure that this sort of anti-intellectual destruction does not happen again?

Many thanks for your assistance and excellent work,

Here's the text being removed:[1]. Based on the edit summary, I surmise that the remover did not think the information was relevant to this particular article. I'm a little troubled by how quickly you're jumping to conclusions about people's motivations. I'm also concerned about the level of involvement you appear to be displaying in our article about you. Wikipedia articles are not owned by anyone, least of all their subjects. Finally, I think you should have a brief read of our civility policy; you are making serious accusations against the remover, and are describing them in a rather unflattering light. If you have evidence to support those assertions, I strongly suggest you present it now; otherwise, please drop them. --NYKevin @392, i.e. 08:24, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Advice for EDU admins

Imagine you are an IT admin for an educational institution (i.e., a school/university). What would you do to limit/help in the fight of vandalism coming from your school?

    • One could check the contributions from your proxy/IP range to see what edits anons are making
    • There exists {{Template:Shared_IP_edu}}. I probably shouldn't *create* user-pages to post this on. I could post it on the ones that already have vandalism. But this is arduous if there are 100's or 1000's of addresses?
    • Is there any place I can note that I am the admin. contact point for some block of addresses? That way the above template posting happens automatically if a user-page is created (i.e., a vandalism warning is posted).
    • I see I can subscribe to RSS feeds of user-talk pages. Again, is there any way to do this in bulk?
    • Anything else?

    Thanks, West.andrew.g (talk) 20:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot for the life of me find a way to move text to the right and make sure each time I do it after different length words it starts in the correct place (ie the tab button on a keyboard makes the text go to a defined position, making it the same place throughout the document)

I've restored File:Gorodetsky.jpg the old image. This is the correct image of you, yes? The uploader of this image says that it was taken from your personal collection, and that you gave permission to license the use of that image under the GFDL and cc-by-sa licenses. Could you please confirm this, choose to license the image differently, or upload another image that you own? I'd be able to assist with any of those things. Alternately, we can just delete this image and use no image. In 7 days from today, if we cannot verify your permission to use that image, then we will remove it and use no image in the article. Let me know if you have any questions, cheers! Prodego talk 22:27, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Notability concern

Hello. I am not currently a registered user of Wikipedia. I was considering joining to create a new entry, but I have a concern with the item's notability. I have read the FAQ's and I have not come to a conclusion on whether my entry would be suitable or if I am just wasting my time. My entry would be over fourdown.org. It is a website and social community devoted to professional wrestling. There are almost 20,000 active users on the website, so I felt that it was justifiable to add it to Wikipedia. However, I am almost sure there is no notable news coverage to speak of concerning the site. If it was to be a solid entry, I would not know what sources I could use to get is past the notability guideline. Is there any way to get help for this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.195.141.205 (talk) 03:49, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You've seen WP:WEB already, I assume? Anyway, speaking from experience, for a fansite to become notable generally requires that the fansite gain enough official acknowledgement that it starts being treated as a news source on the topic by the associated media. If that hasn't happened, it's probably not going to pass muster due to lack of sources. --erachima talk 03:58, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The worst thing would be to spend a good deal of time and effort creating an article which then gets quickly deleted for lacking notability. Wait till the community gets some attention in reliable sources.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 13:12, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Journalists vs. reporters

How, if at all, is Category:American reporters distinguished from Category:American journalists? - Jmabel | Talk 04:25, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Journalist. Reporters are a subset of journalists. For example, a anchor/presenter is also a journalist, but not a reporter. An editortial writer is also a journalist, and also not a reporter. A commentator is also a journalist, and still not a reporter. Think of journalist as a category of job like "physician", where as "reporter" would be like "pediatrician"; a specialist job within the larger category of "journalist". --Jayron32 04:59, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This article has an error in the sorting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capital_cities_by_altitude When you sort by altitude, either by meters or by feet, it sorts incorrectly. Here is the help page for sorting tables but I can't make heads or tails of it. Dismas|(talk) 09:53, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think the answer is that the first row (Bolivia) contains text. See Help:Sorting#Examples, where it says: "The sorting mode becomes numeric if the cell of the first data row contains number only (comma and full-stop used in number formatting are accepted as number)."--SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:29, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I tried moving Bolivia to the second row, but that didn't seem to work. I removed Bolivia, and it sorts fine, so this confirms that Bolivia is the problem. This is short of a solution, but identifies the problem.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:34, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    OPTIMIZATION

Definition of OPTIMIZATION: an act, process, or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional, or effective as possible; specifically : the mathematical procedures (as finding the maximum of a function) involved in this.

I am looking for assistance with the the word Optimization as I would like to use it as part of my Company's name.

I am looking to start a company and we intend to be effective as possible in what we offer or find the maximum function, so as to add the best value possible to the end client.

Optimé is from the Latin root optim which in English means “to be the best.” Is this accurate? And would it be accurate for me to call my company "Optimé Group" or is "The Optimé Group" more suitable?

    Reverse large text in Wikipedia

A few months ago, I was on Wikipedia and noticed that the text was much larger than it had been before (article text, sidebar links, everything) and the layout, consequentially, was jumbled and boxy. I've used my browser's zoom functions to try and help this, but it's definitely within Wikipedia. I've looked for a large-print or accessibility short-cut, but have found nothing.

Why is the text in Wikipedia so large, is this an update that everyone sees, or have I somehow managed to turn on this function?

If anyone has any information on this, please let me know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Georgienne (talkcontribs) 17:52, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It could be you accidentally enlarged the text on Wikipedia and your browser has stored that information. You can try changing it with Ctrl+- to make it smaller or Ctrl+0 to restore the size to default and see if your browser will save the changes. Or are those the zoom functions you already tried? — Bility (talk) 18:00, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Rejection of Article

    Hi,

I have twice had an article rejected, or rather not totally rejected but I was asked both times to make it more factual and less like an advertisement. The article is about the fashion brand Fabryan and its inspirational entrepreneur Samantha-Jane, who has achieved much acclaim in the London fashion scene and who is an example to all women of colour who want to make their way in the world of business.

My problem is that I do not see how it is any less factual and impartial than those articles about comparable fashion houses that have been listed, the closest comparison being that of Bunmi Koko. If I compare the two texts mine is certainly at least as impartial and is supported by references at each stage.

How do I get my article re-reviewed? After the second submission, where I had removed any unsupported positive descriptions, I was told that it had not changed. I hope that this is the right place for the question - I tried the live chat but the entry box does not appear.

    Best regards

    Dimmo13 (talk) 19:47, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's a matter of tone. One can write the best referenced article in the world, but it can still read like an advertisement. – ukexpat (talk) 20:46, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Language like inspirational entrepreneur Samantha-Jane, who has achieved much acclaim in the London fashion scene and who is an example to all women of colour who want to make their way in the world of business is always going to kill an "article", since it grossly fails to maintain the requisite neutral point of view, and indicates rather blatantly that you're trying to advance a cause, rather than to add impartial information to an encyclopedia. If you want to advance a cause, set up your own website trumpeting its virtues. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:53, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree absolutely. My article does not read like that at all, it is deliberately neutral. My comment is purely to aid understanding of why I think this article has validity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dimmo13 (talkcontribs) 21:11, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that a subject must be notable, not merely interesting, worthwhile or commendable; and you've never made a convincing case for that. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:14, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's a tough one. I see countless Z-list actors appearing on Wikipedia and each of those articles must have passed scrutiny. Who decides that someone who has appeared in a soap is more noteworthy to the World than someone or some organization who/that has achieved prominence in a different field? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dimmo13 (talkcontribs) 22:24, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We decide, by consensus at an AFD ultimately, on a case-by-case basis (see WP:Other stuff exists), whether such subjects meet the notability guidelines. – ukexpat (talk) 22:37, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Help, please

Here is my issue. I am editing, trying to clean up List of statues, which is, in my opinion, a bit of a mess. I have decided to make it more-or-less a list of statues that have wikipedia articles about them. This is pretty consistent with a lot of other wikipedia lists. Or failing a link to a specific statue, an item on the list needs to link to an article that includes a picture or some discussion of that statue. So, for example, in the Singapore section of the statue list there is a listing of a statue of Stamford Raffles. I added the name of the sculptor, to give the listing some meaning. However the link to Stamford Raffles in the list takes us to an article that includes a nice picture of the statue under the sub-headng Founding of Singapore. My question is, how do I get the link to Stamford in the statue list to go right to the Founding of Singapore section? This will allow the link to serve a useful function as opposed to links to Queen Victoria, for example, an article that might make no mention of a particular statue of her. I am intending (including some discussion on the discussion page) of removing that sort of link. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 20:38, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    article about Cyrus Eaton

Hi. I have been revising and improving an article about Cyrus Stephen Eaton for the last few years, and today attempted to post a major revision, based on more recent reading. However, several of my deletions and revisions have apparently been rejected by someone. This is for me an ongoing project, one which I am trying to gradually improve in my spare time. However, my efforts will cease altogether, and the article now online will be left in a very inadequate state if I am unable to revise it gradually. I am confident that everything I have written can be supported, and am willing to supply exact references as time permits, but not all at once. How do I contact the person making the decisions about this?

Garry Eaton — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garry Eaton (talkcontribs) 22:49, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is no one person; content is determined by a consensus of editors, including you. A good place to discuss the article would be on Talk:Cyrus S. Eaton. Revising it gradually is good thing, but with each addition you need to verify with reliable published sources. —teb728 t c 23:05, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    right of entry

Does a regulated tenant have a legal right to refuse strangers entry into his home? I have lived in a privately owned flat undisturbed for 24 years, and the landlord now wishes to sell his property via an estate agent. Have I the right to know the identity and occupation of a potential buyer who visits my home to view it, even though he/she is accompanied by an estate agent representative? Help: I want to delete my own photo-comments from photo-files.

When I upload/alter photos to Wikimedia, I have to make a comment stating why I am changing the original. How can I change my comment after I have submitted it? I uploaded a (apparently misrepresentative) picture of a music artist and have been harassed by them and their management for 4 years to remove it. I don't know if I can delete it. I tried to over-write it, and that worked. But the comment, I did not want all of it to be public. Which photo and what exactly is the situation?--v/r - TP 00:40, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Giorgia_Fumanti.jpg .. is the image in question. The management contacted me 4 years ago regarding various fan complaints that have been made online (not on wikipedia), and the links to these comments. He asked me to remove it, and I thought I wasn't able to, so I tried to upload new pictures, hoping that the use of it would be diminished. They have contacted me by phone, email, Facebook and myspace, repeatedly over the past 4 years. The artist herself sent me messages regarding the image, just before Christmas recently. I researched any alternatives, and I thought the best thing was to re-write over the original. My reasons for re-writing over the original photo are partially visible in the English Wikipedia photo page.. but ENTIRELY visible with the Spanish version of the photo page. I feel that they will only harass me more once they see that comment, and especially if international media come across it. I didn't realise it would be publically visible to anyone on the web. Jesangel (talk) 03:07, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The user is speaking of a file at Commons: File:Giorgia_Fumanti.jpg. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:27, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What comment are you asking about? To be honest, I can see no problems with any of the photos, no extra comments, no undesirable text, and no problems with the Spanish language article es:Giorgia_Fumanti either. The older version of the image (File:Giorgia_Fumanti.jpg) was uploaded with the description "Singer Giorgia Fumanti on November 2007, in Richmond, BC, Canada" but even if that is wrong in some minor detail, it is hardly "misrepresentative" and the kind of thing that would lead to fan complaints and 4 years of harassment from the singer's management. And anyway, that text can easily be modified by clicking edit on the Commons description page linked above. Astronaut (talk) 11:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In particular I have noticed that the ones that have {{Pittsburgh Steelers}} (Lynn Swann, Joe Greene (American football), Jack Ham, Jack Lambert (American football), Mel Blount) have the following issue, while L. Where is the draft of your rewrite? All previous attempts to write an article about Kaseya were deleted for being promotional. Roger (talk) 16:57, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) The response to your undelete request is at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion#Kaseya. You can see the deletion log (covering the 4 deletions) at Kaseya. You could try producing a user space draft (in a subpage of a user account) and asking for review. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:00, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Contacting Wikipedia monitor?

There is an article that violates the undue weight aspect of the NPOV. The section Alternative theories and controversies in the article on birds completely violates the Giving "equal validity" stricture, by containing a sentence which presents Alan Feduccia of the University of North Carolina citing two references.

There is not one shred of scientific evidence to support Feduccia. All scientists who study bird evolution agree that they are descended from dinosaurs. Both references are to articles shown to be totally incorrect by numerous published follow-up papers in peer reviewed scientific journals. I have one peer-reviewed published article which demonstrates that the theory of Feduccia is not science.

I want to get this sentence removed from this and related articles. It is impossible to edit the bird article to conform with the equal validity stricture, as the Feduccia partisans are implacable. The Bird article and related need to be locked down to prevent their being used as a platform to give undue weight to a non-scientific invalid theory.

To whom do I appeal to present the evidence that what I said above is correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nwbeeson (talkcontribs)

You start by taking it up on the talk page of the article in question. That's always the first step. (We have no "monitors": just editors like yourself, some of us with a few extra tools.) --Orange Mike | Talk 17:23, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Forgive the brevity of my comment. I'm tired. Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth fredgandt 17:24, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually not applicable. WP:DUE and WP:FRINGE are both more relevant as the OP said. Nonetheless I believe the wording conforms to both. The section correctly identifies Feduccia's views as controversial and very much in the minority. Given the sheer controversy he has stirred up with his book, the media coverage on it, and the way creationists have (as usual) latched on it as a propaganda piece (ignoring the fact that Feduccia's views are still within evolution). it would be more undue to completely eliminate any mention of him. -- Obsidin Soul 17:45, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:DUE says, "significant viewpoints that have been published by reliable sources, in proportion to the prominence of each viewpoint" and verifiability, not truth says, "that material added to Wikipedia must have been published previously by a reliable source. Editors may not add their own views to articles simply because they believe them to be correct, and may not remove sources' views from articles simply because they disagree with them." I am not proposing my point of view, nor wanting to delete Feduccia because I disagree with him. I know that Feduccia has published in a reliable source. But not all such publications are valid. There are hundreds nay thousands of papers in "reliable sources" which are now known to be wrong. As near as I can tell Feduccia is supported by two and only two papers published by reliable sources. Both papers have been shown to be wrong in dozens of follow-up papers published in reliable sources and demonstrating beyond doubt that the Feduccia paper is in error. I have nothing to do with these papers pointing out the errors.

WP:FRINGE says, "reliable sources must be cited that affirm the relationship of the marginal idea to the mainstream idea in a serious and substantial manner." Fudducia is absolutely not affirmed in a serious and substantial manner. Quite the opposite. There are dozens of articles in response to his papers showing that they contain substantial errors and that their conclusions are wrong.

I received three Wikipedia reasons for including Feduccia, and his ideas completely and utterly fail them all. This is not my opinion but the conclusions of litterally dozens of papers published in reliable sources in response to Feduccia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nwbeeson (talkcontribs)

    Bot on the loose

Can someone help me with the Viktorija Rajicic article. I tagged it for a third AfD, but information came to light that the subject was notable. I removed the article from the AfD list, I archived the AfD discussion and I removed the AfD template. For some reason, snotbot came along, replaced the AfD tag, unarchived the AfD discussion and have me a {{uw-afd1}} warning! Can someone help me close this AfD? Cheers. Fly by Night (talk) 17:29, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The bot was only doing its job. I have closed the AfD; with the nomination withdrawn and no !Delete votes, I believe this qualifies for a non-admin closure. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:54, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. The bot was doing what it had been instructed to do. Whether that is what is should have been doing is another matter entirely. There were delete !votes, which were withdrawn (along with the nomination itself) when new evidence came to light two days ago. Thanks again for your help. How can I change a name in a category list for a redirect

There is a category Air defense groups of the United States Air Force. Air Defense Groups in the 1970s were briefly active and continued the missions of Radar Squadrons that both preceded and succeded them. Because of the lack of notability, I have inserted their brief histories into the Wiki articles on the ststions where they were located, such as Othello Air Force Station and created a redirect page, such as for the 637th Air Defense Group. Can a category be added to a redirect page, or can only the redirect be on that page. If not, is there a way to have the listing on the category page reflect what would be refelected by an entry like 637th Air Defense Group?

I have edited the redirect so that it is included in Category:Air defense groups of the United States Air Force. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:29, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

article on phila school for performing arts

originator was Doctor John R. Vannoni....he got the idea...found funding grants and was with the project for over ten years...story needs telling and credit where credit is due stiltskinrex Stiltskinrex (talk) 22:29, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts there is already an article, though its History section is in need of expansion: if you have reliable sources, you are welcome to add information to it. (I am guessing that "Phila" probably means "Philadelphia": local abbreviations aren't terribly helpful in an international encyclopaedia. --ColinFine (talk) 00:09, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Use of present tense for historical events

I have noticed that some Wikipedia historical articles misuse the present tense to describe historical events. This is what I call "TV documentary English" since it seems to me that only documentary participants speak that way naturally. Carried over to written English, this style creates confusion and irritation in the reader and gives the impression that the writer is also confused. These sins are made worse by frequent switching back and forth from past tense to present tense, often within the same paragraph. Could you possibly issue a guideline on this issue ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.72.235.228 (talk) 00:20, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The historical present is a standard use of the present tense in English. It is used to narrate past events for stylistic or rhetorical effect. See present tense#English. —teb728 t c 07:24, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But I'm inclined to agree that such stylistic or rhetorical effect is probably out of place in an encyclopaedia, and certainly arbitrary changing of tense is not a good idea. 114, can you give an example of such a page, that people can look at?
The best place to suggest this is probably Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. --ColinFine (talk) 11:09, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I submitted an article but forgot to create a subpage first so I could play around.

My user name is PierreQuenneville. I accidently submitted an article (my first) on subject of 'Lutherlyn Camp and Conference Centre'. I wanted to compose a draft first, but I think it was submitted for review. It needs to be touched up. How can I retrieve it? Kindest Regards, Pierre Quenneville PierreQuenneville (talk) 00:48, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

By the looks of your contributions you either never saved the page, or it was deleted. If you did save the page and it was was deleted you might be able to ask for it to be undeleted and moved to your userspace. Otherwise, there's no way to retrieve it. - Purplewowies (talk) 01:01, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Can you tell us exactly what you did? Were you editing while logged in under this account? The reason I ask is because your account has only ever made one edit—the post above—and it has no deleted edits. Moreover, I just checked the deletion log for the title you provided and no article by that exact name and capitalization has ever been created. It is unfortunately not that uncommon for people to attempt a first edit but not properly save the material for various reasons, including that they hit the "show preview" button rather than the "save page" button, or they fail to see various messages when they attempt to save such as that the page could not be saved because of a "loss of session data" (usually happens when you let the page sit for a while or work on it for a long time) or because the edit included an external link that is blacklisted or which required a captcha to be added to save. For future reference, and it may be little consolation, but I always save any decent size edit to my computer's clipboard and for really large or labor intensive work, to a wordpad or word processing document, before attempting to save. Meanwhile, if you are still editing from the same tab/window, it's possible that if you to hit your browser's back button, it might, just maybe, be retrievable.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:08, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pierre, no article has ever existed under that name, nor have any articles you have created been deleted. In fact, this question you asked was the first thing this account has ever done at Wikipedia. The only possibilities I can think of are

    • a) You never saved the article
    • b) You created the article under a different name, using another account
    • c) You created the article at a different Wikipedia (not en.wikipedia, but another language or sister project, like simple.wikipedia or something like that)

Please try to retrace your steps and see if you can figure out exactly what the title was, or exactly what account you used to create it. If it was option a, there's nothing that can be done. If it was option c, then you'll need to ask at that language's Wikipedia. --Jayron32 01:33, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Which page is that? —teb728 t c 03:15, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are you asking about an article in Wikipedia? If so, is there something about the article that you find objectionable other than the fact that it exists? (Is it, for example, libelous?) Are you a person who has received significant coverage in reliable sources? If so, are the things it says about you verified by references to reliable sources?
If you want the article deleted, you could nominate it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. But if it conforms to our policies on biographies of living people, notability, and neutrality, it is unlikely to be deleted. —teb728 t c 05:41, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
