Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SGX: T48 , ASX: SGT, OTC Pink: SGAPY), commonly abbreviated as SingTel, is a Singaporean telecommunications company, with a combined mobile subscriber base of 416 million customers from its own operations and regional associates in 25 countries at end of June 2011 increased by 19 percent from a year ago,[2] making it one of the largest mobile network operators in the world.[3][4] The company was known as Telecommunications Equipment until 1995. SingTel provides ISP (SingNet), IPTV (mio TV), mobile phone (SingTel Mobile Singapore)[5] and fixed line telephony services.

SingTel has expanded aggressively outside its home market and owns shares in many regional operators, including 100% of the second largest Australian telco, Optus, which was acquired in 2000 from Cable & Wireless and other shareholders of Optus, and 32% (second largest shareholder after the promoters) of Bharti Airtel, the largest telco in India.

SingTel is also the largest company by market capitalisation listed on the Singapore Exchange and is majority owned by Temasek Holdings, the investment arm of the Singapore government.

2012

  • SingTel acquired Celestial Classic Movies Channel to its mio TV Service.
  • SingTel acquired France 24 Suite of channels to its mio TV Service.
  • SingTel acquired mobile advertising technology company Amobee in March 2012 for $321 million.[6]
  • SingTel secures Broadcast Rights to the 2012 London Olympics and 15 New ESPN STAR Sports channels Free of charge to its mio TV Services.
  • Singtel acquired Broadcast Rights to the New Hindi Sony Channels Light up mio TV
  • SingTel will show La Liga from 2012-2015 Campaign due to ESPN STAR Sports, a channel on mio TV Secures La Liga Matches.
  • SingTel acquired Broadcast Rights of Adithya TV and Sun TV channels to mio TV Service.
  • SingTel acquired Jiangshu Satellite Channel using the cross-carriage regime by Media Developement Authority.

  • SingTel said that Existing old channel numbering system on mio TV Service is no longer available.6 New on Demand Channels has officially started on 2 November 2012 at 09:01 hrs.Existing mio TV channels has already moved over to new channel Numbering System using 3 Digit System and this includes existing 61 Linear Channels and existing 19 On Demand Channels.

2011

  • In May 2011, SingTel announced that they will be aiming to double the size of its satellite business, with two additional launches by 2013.[7]
  • In late September 2011, SingTel was once again the sponsor of Formula 1 Racing.
  • With the two other Singapore mobile operators, which are M1 Limited and StarHub, it introduces iPhone 4S on 28 October
  • On November 2011, SingTel officially launched Singapore's first e-book provider, Skoob and is available through web, iOS or Android app.[8][9]

2009

  • On July 10, SingTel announced that they are launching iPhone 3GS commercially.[10]
  • On October 1, SingTel has won the rights to broadcast the Premier League matches across its platforms, as well as exclusive broadcast rights to ESPN STAR Sports for mio TV.[11]

2008

  • SingTel and Apple jointly announced that Singtel will be the first mobile operator to launch iPhone 3G and its services to Singapore in June.[12]
  • In the month of June, SingTel was the title sponsor of the inaugural Formula One night race in Singapore. It was once again the title sponsor of the Singapore 2009 Formula One night race.

2007

  • Mio TV was launched commercially on 20 July 2007 and began its services on 21 July 2007.
  • SingTel Generation mio was launched commercially on 9 January 2007 and began its services on 21 January 2007

2005

  • SingTel launched its commercial 3G services in February.

2003

  • SingTel sold 60% of Singapore Post (SingPost) in May during an IPO in an effort to focus on its core telecommunications services business.[13]
  • SingTel divested its stakes in Yellow Pages in June, its directory business to CVC Asia Pacific and J.P. Morgan Partners Asia for S$220 million.[14]
  • SingTel announced that it has appointed Ericsson as the vendor for its 3G network in Singapore in July.

2001

  • SingTel was awarded a 3G licence in April

1992

  • SingTel was incorporated in March (as Telecommunications Equipment) and became a public company in October 1993. SingTel currently remains as Singapore’s largest IPO. It was listed on the Singapore Exchange in November 1993 and on the Australian Stock Exchange in September 2001.[15]
  • SingTel introduced the somewhat-popular Call zone service, made defunct in 1997.

1955

  • The Singapore Telephone Board (STB) was incorporated as a statutory board with exclusive rights to operate telephone service within Singapore. This was followed by the merger of STB and Telecommunications Authority of Singapore (TAS) in 1974. Up until that time, STB was responsible for local services, while TAS provided international services. 1982 saw the merger of the Postal Department with Telecoms.

1879

  • Three years after Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone invention, Bennet Pell started a private telephone exchange in Singapore that had 50 lines.[15]

Network and Infrastructure

SingTel has a claimed to be well-established and extensive communications network and infrastructure in Singapore and Australia. However, its network is constantly congested due to high network traffic and constant refusal to resolve it. The Group’s advanced mobile networks cover 100% and 94% of the Singapore and Australian populations respectively. In addition, the Group has interests in about 50 submarine cables with landing points in more than 50 locations in Asia. It is a major investor in many of the world's most sophisticated submarine cable systems, such as SEA-ME-WE 3, SEA-ME-WE 4, APCN, APCN 2, China-US, Japan-US, C2C, i2i and Southern Cross.[16]

Associate companies include the Singapore Post, which was formerly a subsidiary until its separate listing on the Singapore Exchange in May 2003 and the New Century Infocomm of Taiwan which SingTel has a 24.5% stake. SingTel also owns 20.33% stake in Hong Kong's APT Satellite.[citation needed]
