Kabaddi is a contact sport that originated in Ancient India and has different forms and types. There are broadly two types of Kabaddi played - International and Indian. The international format is recognised by the International Kabaddi Federation and is followed by all the member countries. Since the sport originated in India, it has various Indian styles that differ in rules in different parts of the country.
The Indian style Kabaddi has its separate World Cup Kabaddi being held since 2010 which is not recognised by the International Kabaddi Federation. India always dominated the event by winning all the gold medals in both men's and women's category. This World Cup Kabaddi is played in Circle Style. World Cup 2015 was cancelled because of 2015 Guru Granth Sahib desecration controversy. World Cup Kabaddi is witnessed only by a couple of states in Northern India.
In the international version of the game, two teams of seven members each participate and face against each other to emerge victorious, by collecting more points than their opponents. Here it is played in Standard style. The size of the field in case of men is 10x13m, and the size of the field in case of women in 8x12m. Each team has three players in reserve, to be used as supplements if the situation demands. Each half of the game consists of 20 minutes, and a five minute break takes place at half time, when the teams exchange sides. These are the same rules as followed in the popular Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League. There have been only two world cups till date on the international format in the year 2004 and 2007 respectively.
