Merge names for Tibet?

Merge names for Tibet?

Three articles duplicate (sometimes word-for-word) discussion of the English, Chinese, and Tibetan words for "Tibet".

Merge? Since the first two pages are lengthy (currently 100 and 157 KB respectively), should the third be expanded? Perhaps renamed something like "Names and definitions of Tibet"? Keahapana (talk) 23:35, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:47, 28 February 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Concerns about 'Tibetan Martial Arts'

The articles contained in Category:Tibetan martial arts share a number of problematic characteristics: they're largely unreferenced (or referenced only with web links to dojos purporting to teach these 'arts'), they make nebulous claims of ancient, Tibetan lineage, and many of them read like advertising materials for the art in question. Is there anyone here who has any experience with these specific traditions, or reliable sources for working with them? I've never seen mention of any of these traditions in sources dealing more generally with Tibet or Tibetan religious traditions (including Tibetan medicine), and I'm concerned that Wikipedia may be being used to propagate some dubious claims for commercial purposes. --Clay Collier (talk) 09:12, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree on all points. I messed around with a couple articles a few years ago that even seemd to have made-up Tibetan names, meaning that they were falsified by somebody who couldn't even by bothered to find a real Tibetan word ... I don't remember the specifics.—Nat Krause(Talk!·What have I done?) 04:57, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, everyone. We have a DYK event for Buddha's Birthday and Vesak just like events for Christmas or April Fool's day. Many of Tibetan culture is based on Buddhism, so I think you guys can create/edit interesting Buddhist articles in upcoming five days. Once you create or five fold expand Buddhist related articles (famous temples, monks, movies, literature, paintings, foods, etc) within 5 days, and then nominate it to the below place. After a review, your article can be featured on the main page. So be hurry if you are interested. :) Thanks.

Transliteration and Capitalization

I notice many people using Wylie transliteration in articles are improperly using capitalization. In his article specifying the scheme Wylie discouraged capitalization and said that where used the first letter or prefix should be capitalized not the root letter (which he calls the initial). So bka' rgyud and Bka' rgyud are correct in Wylie transliteration but not bKa' rgyud. See: Wylie_transliteration#Capitalization.

Changthang

The Changthang is an important region of Tibet covering 69% of tibet's land (I've just read), and stretching from Ladakh to Qinghai. It is a fascinating and unique area of nomads and wild spaces. Despite this the article has no information on the Changthang in the PRC, focusing exclusively on the parts now located in India. I'd love it if some folks could head over there and balance this out. I'm going to do a bit myself, but don't know how much I'll be able to do.--Keithonearth (talk) 18:05, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns about articles on individual Tibetan Lamas

Unfortunately it seems many articles on Wikipedia about individual Tibetan lamas look less like objective summaries of biographical material than they do mini-hagiographies or promotional material. Usually it turns out the main contributors are either disciples of the lama concerned or have some close involvement with that particular lama’s lineage. While this may provide some “insider knowledge”, it usually heavily biases the content with a particular non-objective POV.

Should devoted disciples (or a disaffected former disciples) of a Lamas be encouraged to preclude themselves from editing articles about their "root guru" or lineage on grounds of conflict of interest? The goals of being a good disciple in the Tibetan tradition and those of Wikipedia often seem opposed. Chris Fynn (talk) 18:33, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

After reviewing the conflict of interest policy, religious devotion can be considered a conflict of interest. However, merely having a conflict of interest with respect to an article does not preclude editors from editing it. I think that in this situation, like in other controversial areas of Wikipedia, we must assume good faith and deal with problems in article and with editor behavior as they arise.
I wonder also whether, especially for historical figures, the scarcity of sources has an effect. If all we have are hagiographies, then that's what we have to report. Not that the articles themselves should be written in that style, but they will be unbalanced in favor of the subject. --Danger (talk) 20:34, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For an authoritative source of basic bio information for historical figures, you can always start with the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center database which will give you the bare historical details (date and place of birth/death, parents names, students, teachers, incarnation lineage, associated monasteries and so on. Then there is also the Treasury of Lives which has bios on almost every Tibetan figure noteworthy enough for a Wikipedia article. Some of the ToL biographies are a little hagiographical in themselves - but at least many are peer-reviewed and written by noted scholars in the field so this is a reliable source for information to use in Wikipedia articles. In a Wikipedia article things that are not verifiable facts (reincarnations, miraculous events, and so on) should not be stated as if they are - no matter how much you believe that they occurred or that they are true. I suggest qualifying statements about such things with a phrase like "Tibetan Buddhists believe ...." or "according to the traditional account of his life ..." though obviously you have to cite the source. If the source is a subjective hagiography rather than a more objective biography it is best to state that it is so - doing so is in no way disrespectful to the subject or the tradition. Using appropriate language and style for a Wikipedia article might be regarded as 'skillful means'. Chris Fynn (talk)

Tibet articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Tibet articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

IPA for Tibetan key

We have enough articles with Tibetan IPA transcriptions (going on a hundred) that it's probably time to come up with a quick key for Tibetan in the IPA, as we do for other popular languages.

Would someone here like to create it? If not, do you have any preferences as to what it would be like? Should we just have Lhasa dialect, or should it support other things as well? — kwami (talk) 02:27, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Importance rating questions

Could someone tell me if the rationale for the importance rating is available to see? I ask because it seems odd to me that Invasion of Tibet (1950) and 1959 Tibetan uprising should be mid-importance while the Kuomintang Pacification of Qinghai and Western Government secret intervention into Tibet should be top-importance and 2008 Tibetan unrest should be high-importance.Wikimedes (talk) 06:21, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Importance rating is a subjective process and generally reflects the rater's knowledge and priorities as much as any "objective" scale. The scale is fairly standard across WikiProjects; a good description of one can be found here. I agree that these ratings seem, comparatively, a bit off. You are welcome to change them. Importance ratings aren't that, er, important. Danger (talk) 15:06, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll give changing them a shot, and probably not worry too much about it afterward. How does one change an article's importance rating?Wikimedes (talk) 21:21, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the following template, change the "importance" parameter to whatever rating you feel appropriate: {{WPCHINA|tibet=yes|class=something|importance=something}} (Valid inputs are "top", "high", "mid", and "low".) So a B-class, mid-importance article would have this template: {{WPCHINA|tibet=yes|class=b|importance=mid}} Danger (talk) 02:12, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On further thought, I think I'll back up a step and not worry about it before hand. Qualitative changes to controversial topics such as these are sure to result in a lot of -ahem- discussion. Right now, my time is probably better spent improving content. Thank you for your help.Wikimedes (talk) 01:17, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found some time and changed the importance ratings on the 1959 Tibetan Uprising, Kuomintang Pacification of Qinghai, and Western Government Secret Intervention Into Tibet as described on the respective talk pages. "Invasion of Tibet" has recently had a lot of discussion and a focus and title change, so there are more important things to worry about, and I've been heavily involved in the editing and don't feel right about unilaterally increasing the importance rating.

Is it possible to change the importance rating under WP:Tibet and WP:China separately? What's important for Tibet may be less important for the whole of China.Wikimedes (talk) 15:59, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dalai Lama intro

I hope everyone will help me keep an eye on the intro to Dalai Lama. An unregistered editor keeps reverting to his preferred version (for example, see my edit restoring it). This is not a dispute over a political issue: he is adding a set of idiosyncratic and uncited musings on the meaning of the phrase "Dalai Lama". Still, for the last couple months, this has been the intro the Dalai Lama article, which should be embarrassing to Wikipedia.—Greg Pandatshang (talk) 19:26, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese PUA Tibetan text added by Yu Hai

I have noticed that User:虞海 (Yú Hǎi) has recently been adding Tibetan text using Chinese PUA encoding into various Tibetan-related articles (e.g. Nechung, Doilungdêqên County‎, Jigdal Dagchen Sakya, Ngor, Gompa). I am converting as many as I can find to standard Unicode Tibetan, but editors should be on the look out for any I miss, and keep a very close eye on all edits made by this increasingly disruptive editor. Ngari/Shigatse Prefecture border

I made and uploaded a map of modern Tibetain administrative boundries in 2008. Recently I was told that the maps I made had an error relating to the Ngari/Shigatse Prefecture level borders. I fixed it on the maps that highlight the Prefectures in question, but have yet to do the fix on the maps highlighting other Prefectures (making the change much less noticeable, but still visible) Before I put the work into making the change on the other 6 maps, I would like to ask if there is any reason *not* to do it. It seems like I had drawn the map using out of date info, or that it has since become out of date. Please let me know if there are any issues with making the change to the other maps. Thanks! While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Potential article?

I just declined a speedy deletion for the article Anti-Tibetan Sentiment, as it was tagged with no context. There's enough there to where I can tell what it's about, although it needs a lot of expansion. It seems like it could potentially merit an article with a little TLC, but this is out of my typical editing zone and would benefit from someone more familiar with the topic. I've created the page 70,000 Character Petition as a translation from the French article using the Translation tool. There's a lot of post-processing to fix up cruft left over from the tool, but wanted to let you know about the article.

As a side issue, there seems to be a vast number of Tibet related articles on French WP that do not exist here. We might want to enlist FR->EN translators to translate some of them. Alternatively, anyone could rummage around the French portal for ideas on article topics that could be added here. Mathglot (talk) 05:37, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Finished editing the translation and fixing the cruft. Now we need new eyeballs on this, so we can improve the somewhat poor article structure, and flesh out more detail. Mathglot (talk) 05:28, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

eat half, walk double, laugh triple

I'm looking for an attestation and commentary (or debunking) about this phrase which seems to be popping up all over the place on Facebook and other social media (e.g., here) and attributed as "a Tibetan proverb":

"The secret to living well and longer is: eat half, walk double, laugh triple and love without measure..." —Tibetan proverb

Is this really Tibetan in origin? Can someone supply 1) a source, 2) the original in Tibetan, and 3) an accurate translation?

A search on the internet for the phrase turns up many sites which quote it, many of them claiming Chinese origin. Plenty of such so-called "wise quotations" are just made up on the spot by Random Dood who wants to stake out his 15' of fame, and I suspect this is one of those, but I'm really not sure.

Is there a "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" for Tibetan, and is this in it? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:31, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I found a list of Tibetan proverbs that does not claim to be exhaustive, but is very long. And it doesn't have that quote. --nhinchey (talk) 22:54, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template:TBRC-RID

Over on the Wikipedia:Requested_templates page I've made a request for the creation of a template to link to Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center Resource ID numbers which I think would be useful to almost every article covered by this project as well as in citations to Tibetan sources and in various infoboxes. Che Dalha

The name of the new Chairman of the TAR, known by the Chinese 齐扎拉 (supposedly transliterated as ཆེ་དགྲ་ལྷ in Tibetan), has been romanized as "Che Dalha" in some sources (Tibetan Government in Exile) but "Qizhala", which seems to be a straightforward pinyin rendering of his Chinese-transliterated name by others (Xinhua). Normally official Chinese sources use Tibetan romanization as opposed to using the pinyin of the Chinese name. In this case I want to consult the members of this wikiproject - what is the proper romanization of his name? This is a case where even reliable sources, such as the Associated Press, might be spelling it improperly; furthermore, is this one name or two names?? Colipon+(Talk) 23:39, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know Tibetan, but Che Dalha is the romanization used by the Time magazine [2], LA Times [3] etc. -Zanhe (talk) 00:14, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Panchen Lamas

The numbering system is incorrect, this is my 1st post so please forgive any mess up. The 5th DL recognised the 1st PL the +3 was used by Tashilhunpo & PEKING only. the Tibetans did not use this numbering. it started with 17 point agreement & was rtned to west in late 80s EVERY BOOK written mentions it[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Breakingchina (talkcontribs) 18:04, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Interested in cleaning up an article?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in expanding and improving sourcing on Red Guards in Tibet. It has sourcing, but it can always use more. I cleaned it up a little (it originally lacked any sort of true lead) but it would definitely benefit from being edited by someone who is more familiar with the history. Anyone interested? One question - are Lopa people and Lhoba people the same? Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:41, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, they are not the same. Lhopa (lit. southerner) is a Tibetan name for non-Tibetan-related tribal peoples living mostly in what's now Arunachal Pradesh. The people of Mustang are related to Tibetans. Lhopa is written lho-pa, while Lopa is written glo-pa per this glossary. – Greg Pandatshang (talk) 19:28, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Requested article: Tibet House, London

Would anybody care to create a stub for Tibet House, 1 Culworth Street, London, which "aims to reflect the aspirations of the Tibetan community ... and promotes the developmental policies of the Central Tibetan Administration ... based on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s principles of truth, non-violence and genuine democracy." http://www.tibet-house-trust.co.uk/aboutus/ (We already have an article on Tibet House in NY, NY, so this should be at Tibet House, London ? or Tibet House (London) ?) (Not sure about naming conventions.)
