Potential boycott

In early December 2017, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, told Fox News that it was an "open question" whether the United States was going to participate in the games, citing security concerns in the region.[22] However, days later the White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, stated that the United States "looks forward to participating" and will attend.[23] With the announcement that North Korea will participate in the Winter Olympics, there was talk about a possible Olympic boycott by the United States, after the administration of President Donald Trump, who has been at loggerheads with Kim Jong-un, has issued mixed messages.[24] Concerns were assuaged when it was announced Vice President Mike Pence and wife Karen would attend the Opening Ceremony.[25]
